ASTORIA, NY
I finally decided to try this place and I have to say it was great!
I ordered el Lomo Saltado and it was delish! the meat wasn't fatty, and the portion was big enough to take a doggie bag home.
While finishing our meal, the bartender came over and gave out free shots to all the ladies in our section. Nice touch!
2 small complaints. 1 - we were seated in the back and the temperature was too warm. we asked to sit in the front area where the windows provided a nice breeze.
2 - when I asked for a second round of our beers, I was brought the wrong one....not that big of a deal.
Would definitely suggest this place to friends. -

ASTORIA, NY
So I eat out a lot... and by a lot I mean everyday... which is kind of ironic seeing that I am a REALLY good cook.. i swear I am.. in the immortal words of rapper Juvenile "she get it from her mama" (again reiteration I am from the south)... the problem is by the time I get home there is zero desire to cook...
my goal is to give Astoria a fair chance as I gave Brooklyn ( I miss you BK) in search of good places to eat. So my usual daily routine included going through grub hub and I wandered upon Tu Casa...
one quick skim of the menu and I perk up a bit because I see Peruvian food... now I loveeee Peruvian food and I am going to say something here that might be shocking BUT Miami has definitely got NYC beat when it comes to Peruvian food...
however I figured I would give Tu Casa a fair chance...
I ordered two empanadas one chicken one beef and the arroz chauva con camerones which is Peruvian fried rice with shrimp!
Now I ended up getting two beef empandas which was disappointing but they were still good, but I really wanted to try the chicken one. The fried rice was good but was way to heavy on the scallions and I love scallions but it was a bit OD. They do however give you plenty of shrimp which was a nice surprise!
The prices are good and I am curious to try the ceviche as that is one of my favorite things to eat, and I also want to try the Jalea.
All in all it was good, just wish they got my order correct, but I am not one to complain unless you really screw up...
But I am still on my quest for the Peruvian spot that reminds me of Miami that can prove me wrong... -

Tu Casa is like a 3 year old child that loves to throw tantrum. I would like to grab them by the neck and slap the sh!t out of.
Time after time, they have always messed up my order and tested my patience with their stupidity and ignorance.
Today I placed an order for 6 beef and 2 chicken empanadas with their steak lunch special. I asked the guy to send me one green sauce per empanada. He told me NO PROBLEM.
15 mins later (fast delivery) but only sent me ONE sauce. (Ok no biggie) So I called the restaurant, and called, and called, and called. Finally after what seems like 8 phone calls later, a young girl picks up and places me on hold. I wait for 5 mins and then I can hear someone pick up the receiver and hang up on me. So I call back, and back and back, finally on my 3rd time she picks up.
I told her that I one receive 1 sauce for my 8 empanadas. She told me that it was the manager that I spoke to and I need to wait for him to come back. She also made me repeat my order back to her. She wasnt understanding what I needed and then finallllllllllly, she finally understood I was calling for the sauce not the food. She said she will send them right over, and I asked her to confirm how many sauces will she send. She said one sauce per emapanada. I said Ok.
15 mins later, delivery guy shows hands me a bag. I get inside my apt, look in the bag and there is 4 sauce. By this point I am livid. Are you kidding me? Are you trying to F**k with me? I called back and asked her if she is trying to play with me or if her math skills is that bad. She told me that the man that packed my food claimed to put 5 sauces. I told her that is not the case because I called the first time saying that there was only one. I asked her if she had a bad memory and did not remember what our initial conversation was. And she didnt remember.
IN the end my conclusion is that TU CASA makes your ordering and your orders too difficult and by then, you are too pissed off to eat. I am so pissed that I want to walk the food back to them and ask for a refund because of their bullshit.
Last time they forgot my rice, and then told me that they were going to deliver it. @ hours passed and numerous phone calls later they told me that they were too busy to redeliver. Tu casa screwed up my order too many times, and created many fustrated situations like this that I rather not deal with them. Its the principle and that is something tu casa lacks, along with customer service and math skills. Its the damn principle and because a sour series of bad service happens over and over...I will not come back.
NOTE: BTW, those empanadas were all wrong and not what I asked for. When I called them to notify them of the error..the manager just said "what do you want me to do, I am busy. what do you want from me?!" uhhhhh douche fudging bag. too bad i couldnt send him my middle finger and tell him to shove it. -

Astoria, NY
Cute cozy place for couples or a small group of friends. The food is good, ordered the steak and it was delicious! Drinks are pretty reasonable, went on a Wednesday night and they had a special on Margaritas - frozen or with ice and plenty of flavors to choose from only $5. What I liked the most though is the management and staff are very hospitable and friendly they make you feel at home. Only downside the place is small and nothing really fancy so if you're thinking of coming with a large group or trying to impress your date try somewhere else.

Big bright smile from the owner, Live latin music in the background, flakey beef empanadas in my plate, followed by camarones ajillo creates a fantastic recipe for the "our place" title. Food is amazing, staff is friendly, music is lovely. I love this restaurant.

We came here twice, once on a slow Sunday afternoon and then again for Valentine's Day. The restaurant is small, with a bar in front and some cozy tables in the back. The waitresses both times seemed clueless. Both times we had to ask for water. Both times I got a confused look..um, you want a glass of water??
Anyway, the food is delicious!! The first time hubby had the pernil and it was off da hook!! So moist and tender, full of flavor and no yucky fat attached to every piece. I had the ceviche and it was so yummy. The fish was fresh, and the lime juice was perfect, not overwhelming. The second time we both had the skirt steak and it was perfect. We had our son's birthday party catered by Tu Casa and it was a huge hit!! Everyone asked me where we got the food...the food is what made the party a success! And Will the owner is such a nice guy. And, like everyone else says...the green sauce is DA BOMBA -

This place was delicious! And let me add that the host is incredibly gorgeous - pretty eye candy during my meal. I ordered the pollo tu casa, which consisted of a piece of finely seasoned and slowly cooked chicken, maduros (plantains), chorizo, and rice topped with egg. The entire dish was full of flavor and the green sauce they offer is an awesome touch to the dish. Also, I got a free margarita for checking in on yelp, awesome! Definitely worth the subway ride from Manhattan to Astoria.

Ok so I was a bit skeptical about this place when I walked in. Why? Because for a Friday evening, it was a bit empty in my opinion. By empty I mean it was myself and my gf with just one other group of four at the other end of the dining room. The service was great. If you check yelp, they have a $20 for $40 off of your bill and a free drink with a check-in. Score! They are taking care of us fellow yelpers!
The portions? Well let's just say you will be satisfied. I was thoroughly surprised with this place. It was very good food. Not the best I've had because I felt like something was missing. I don't know what though! Because it was so empty- I guess I had no issues with the service that most people complain about. I will say though that the empanadas are a bit pricey. ONLY complaint.
The atmosphere was very relaxed, which I enjoy thoroughly. The music wasn't overbearing and the people were very friendly. The food LOOKED spectacular but it wasn't AS good as it looked- still it was very good. The food also seemed very freshly prepared - though I could be wrong. It was still good.
5/5 for Service
4/5 for Food
4/5 for Pricing
5/5 for Portions
4/5 for Atmosphere
My girlfriend loved this place! I did too! Great date spot. -

Good calamari, nice atmosphere, and the potatoes with that cheese sauce are also good. We sat at a high table outside during a week night, which was nice. This place didn't necessarily hit casa for some reason, but there was nothing to complain about either.

Take advantage of both the Yelp deals they offer: Yelp certificate $20 for $40 off your bill and Yelp check-in offer for a free margarita. I've also noticed that they seem to have drink specials almost every night of the week, the drink specials are good for people sitting in the dining area or at the bar area.
If you're not familiar with to this type of cuisine here are some dishes we recommend trying here: Salchipapas (pieces of hot dogs over fries); Papa a la Huancaina (potatoes with a cheese sauce); lomo saltado (sliced beef with sautéed onion and tomatoes - my go to dish at any Peruvian restaurant); arroz chaufa (Peruvian style fried rice), top it all off with the delicious green sauce.
Things we've tried here that we recommend skipping: empanadas , Pollo Empanizado (breaded chicken), and the desserts.
When I want some Peruvian food but don't feel like going into Manhattan I come here. While it's not the best Peruvian food I've ever had (I know they're a mix but we only order the Peruvian dishes) it's good for a local place with decent prices, a nice ambiance, and friendly staff.
Without the Yelp and check-in specials I would say 3 stars but these great offers bump it up to a 4! -

RIP OFF!!!!! Ridiculous, out of control. Are a few words that I would use to describe my order tonight from this place. I ordered the shrimp and garlic sauce and thought I could share it with my girlfriend. Nope. For $14.99, I got 8, EIGHT!! 8 shrimp total in the order. Ohh it came with rice. BFD. I have ordered from here before and had no complaints, I really enjoyed their Pernil and tostones. But after this I think I will see what other options there are in the area.

If you want homecooked perfected Spanish food, this is the place to go !
I threw a surprise bday dinner here for the bf and it was a big hit. I and my guests had not one complaint. Service was attentive, food was spectacular, prices were relatively cheap to other places and the live music topped it off.
I tried to make reservations for a party of 10 and Don Coqui for dinner and that place tries to make your life difficult every way possible. Hung up the phone after they denied dinner reservations for more than 7 people.
Don Coqui: "We only make dinner reservations for a large party like that at 5pm" ....
me: "Really? On a Friday? You expect working people to be here at 5pm on a Friday? I'll take my business elsewhere." *click
I'm glad because TU CASA had WAY BETTER FOOD and if it weren't for Don Coqui lacking in their business-clientele relationship, I would've never went on Yelp to review other places in the area.
My bf is Puerto Rican and his father makes the best Pernil aside from the actual Leconera's in Puerto Rico. So when I ordered Pernil like I do everywhere else I go, I like to compare it to his cooking I'm always let down. NOT HERE ! Tu Casa's Pernil was soft, cooked to perfection, juicy and full of flavor. All it was missing was a nice piece of quero to crunch on. The rice was perfect and everyone who ordered steak was amazed. One of my guests is a Sous Chef and she had no room to talk once she took a bite of her meal. As I go on and on in my ramble I'd like to also say their chimchurri sauce is the best I've ever had.
Owners and waitstaff were more than accomodating and didn't gripe about my usage of Yelp's $20 for $40 deal.
Thanks Will (Owner) for working 7 days a week, your hard work is definitely paying off ! I will recommend EVERYONE to come here for dinner. -

My friend took me here about 2 months ago for happy hour and I had a margarita and a couple appetizers. I have been back about 4 times since and taken different friends and they all love it. The service is great, really friendly staff, and food comes out fast. The venue is cute and they play latin music. So far I've had the Peruvian papa, chicharron de pollo with tostones (make sure you have the garlic sauce with it), empanadas (the chicken one is sooo good), and the steak dinner which was cooked to perfection had perfect texture. They always have the yelp deal and some kind of special...got 2 for 1 pitchers of sangria last time and used the $20 for $40 worth of food yelp coupon...good shit!!!

Full disclosure: We bought "Yelp Deal" ($20 for $40) AND when we checked in on Yelp we each got a free margarita. Would you agree with me that this is a bit beyond #WINNING? (SO: check in when you go!)
- It was pretty empty the night we were there. If you're expecting super fast service, you may be a bit underwhelmed. True to the Latin American way, things here are relaxed and take-your-time
- Empanadas are average - the best part is their not greasy
- Papa a la Huancaina are interesting - tender pieces of potatoes in a truly unique cheese sauce (if you love pimento you'll love this)
- Chicharrones de pollo (pieces of deep fried chicken, no bone) are good -- but they are typical -- the rotisserie chicken is really the only way to go (perfect)
- Skirt steak is decent - a bit tough, but they cook it exactly as you ask for it to be cooked
Without the "Yelp Deal" and the check in offer - I'd say three stars....but with these two amazing extras, I'll say four. -
Review from Mabel W.
My friend and I both were hungry after work so I decided to whip out my iphone and yelp* for a good place to eat.
The rotisserie chicken and rice was good but the service was non-existent. I'm not sure if they were busy because there was a party of 10 having dinner right by us. Either way, we didn't see our waitress 80% of the time and I had to flag down someone for water.
Also they had a group of musicians playing literally RIGHT next to us, singing and playing the guitar. First, they were singing 'Happy Birthday' for someone that was in the party of 10. Okay, I was digging it... The song ended. Did they stop? Nope. They played the entire time. I couldn't hear my friend at all.
I gave this place an extra star because of the awesome yelp hook-up but I don't see myself coming back in the future. -

My little sister and I came here (their Steinway location) on Christmas Eve to take my Mom out because it was her birthday, but she didn't want anything too fancy. Originally we were going to take her to "Guacamole" (a nearby Mexican restaurant that she mentioned being interested in) but we wanted a more quiet, intimate restaurant and she wanted more of a South American meal than a Mexican one...
After checking out Tu Casa's Yelp reviews, website, photos (and the deal on Yelp didn't hurt either!) we decided to give this place a whirl...upon entering we were greeted by the restaurant owner who led us to our table (I love when owners really take pride in their restaurant and don't fee like they're to good to socialize with patrons), gave us our menus and a few minutes later our waiter made himself known without being pushy.
NO JOKE, the food was AMAZING and I almost never like anyone's frijoles (red beans) unless they're made by my mom (or by yours truly =D) and normally I go for morro rice (mixed black beans) - but we pretty much sampled a little bit of everything...
As an appetizer we ordered the Ground Beef and Chicken empanadas and a side dish of tostones (fried green plantains) - the empanadas weren't awful, the meat was a bit dry but flavorful nonetheless, the tostones were GREAT - not too thin, not too thick but just right. They also have a squeezie bottle of garlic sauce that I kind of ended up pouring on top of almost everything (not because the food needed it, but because condiments/sauces are my weakness)...but anyway, tostones are traditionally served with some sort of garlic-ky watery "mojito" (not the cocktail) so that was great.
As my main entree I had the Pollo a la Parrilla (Grilled Chicken Breast) with red beans and white rice - the chicken was insanely juicy and really well seasoned, the rice with buttery and tasted homemade and the beans were excellent (ie. not burned or made with tons of vegetables and things I can't readily identify - sue me but I like my rice and beans to be just that, not a confetti party).
My mom went with the Pernil con Arroz Moro and my sister ordered the chuletas fritas (fried pork chops w/ rice & beans) and they were both VERY happy with their food. I did try a piece of my sister's fried pork chop (by the way ALL our entrees were quite sizable servings!) and it was delicious...
We also had the red sangria, not going to lie, I've had better - more flavor-full sangria...but it WAS super strong (I am not an alchy lightweight) so I would definitely order that again...in all we had a really great time, we also had them bring my mom a piece of their Dulce 3 Leches cake which we all split. It was more moist then I am used to but it was DIVINE and a perfect way to end our meal.
In all I really liked this place. They were friendly, service was fast and efficient, the food was fantastic, prices are reasonable and the ambience was nice. I have no negative things to say and I found it cuz of Yelp :). -

ASTORIA, NY
Nice experience. Had their strip steak which was cooked to order and nicely seasoned. Their staples of rice and beans were also nicely done. The mixed cheviche was fresh, tasty and refreshing. Great to get as an appetizer to split among 3+ people. They have $5 margaritas and mojitos until a certain time. The place is spacious and the ambiance is bright and inviting. The waitresses don't know the menu as well as they should but its a new place so I forgive them. When I am in the mood for Latin food this is the place I'll come to again in this neighborhood.

We had cortisone chicken, seafood soup fish, calamari and chorizo. Everything was hot fresh and delicious. The drinks were also great, probably the best margarita I have ever had.

My sister works nearby so we came here for some sister bonding time!
She eats here often and really enjoys the food.
The restaurant has two seating areas: one in the front with glass windows overlooking Steinway (good for people watching) that has just a few tables and the bar. The second is in the back with a glass back overlooking the street behind it (good for watching the sky's evening colors). It has pretty simple decor and vibrant art on the walls. It looks like most Latin resturants - dark wood and deep yellow paint on the walls with music playing (not too loudly). It seems like a good place for people in their early 20's to late 30's but also good for families at the same time
I was greeted right away and escorted to where my sister was waiting. The waitress gave us plenty of time to decide what we wanted to order coming back every few minutes to check up on us. They have really nice staff. Everyone was friendly and had great smiles.
It's a good place for a big group: there was a bit of a family gathering going on where we were sitting, the staff had pulled a few tables together to seat about 10-15 people (including kids). The staff was organizing way before they came and handled everything efficiently (yes i know i was being nosy!)
My sister and I order drinks first (a strawberry marguerita for me, can't remember what my sister had) but they were both super strong. Tasty but strong! We had the
Chicharrones de Pollo for appetizers- (chicken with tostones) that was juicy, crispy and yummy. I would definitely come back for those.
For the actual dinner, my sister had the Cesar Salad for some strange reason while I had the quarter chicken and papas fritas. I have had better seasoned and crispy papas fritas, but these were decent. The quarter chicken was juicy and crisp, perfectly cooked. There are two bottles of sauces on the tables and I used the green one for my fritas. The sauce was flavorful. My sister enjoyed her salad.
I would definitely come back. It's a good place to have as a neighborhood go to.
Pro: good food, great service, relaxed atmosphere
Con: If you go here too often you probably will get tired of the food.
Overall: I would come back here and bring a friend. -

I have been here twice and both times I was very satisfied with the food- I am a vegetable lover and was very impressed with the quality of vegetables that were served along with the fish dishes. The maduros are my favorite however! The price is also excellant- nothing is very expensive and they have great deals on yelp! I went the first time on a week day and there wasn't many people and the servers were very attentive. The second time I went was on a Saturday night and it was quite busy- but there was live music which was an added bonus!

The restaurant is cool but could use a host to greet you. Service was black n white. Get that order in and wait a little while until you get your food. But it was definitely worth the wait, just straight deliciousness!!! I had the skirt steal with chimichuri sauce. Bangin. Fried calamari was decent and ceviche was good. This place had potential to better with some friendly customer care and less wait on the food(aka hire some more kitchen help).

All I have to say first is don't be in a rush to eat. Don't dare be starving when you walk in here. You'll pass out waiting for your food to arrive.
We were a group of 9 and when we arrived, there were only two other tables with customers. The waiter did fine at first, giving us plenty of time to peruse the menu, and then he came and took our drink orders. Drinks came and then we ordered our food. That was where it all went downhill. Now, we were all in good company and were having a great time, but the food that we ordered did not hit the table until a good 50 to 60 minutes after we ordered it. Okay, wait...a few appetizers came out after 40 minutes, my bad. But the main dishes? Wow. Took a SUPER long time. I figure that they must have just one guy back there in the kitchen sweating it out, trying his best to do all the orders all by himself? I'd take odds on that and win. Get some extra help in the kitchen, Tu Casa! Even though it was a Wednesday night, by the time we left the place was full of patrons. Sorry, guys, but ONE cook is just not gonna cut it!
Now..... the FOOD was GOOD. Best rice and beans I've had in a while. In fact, the entire table agreed that the food was good, and certain dishes were great. I had the carne guisada (beef stew) and it was pretty tasty. It didn't knock me off my feet, but it was good, and those rice and beans were PERFECT. (white rice, red beans).
So....if not for the slooooowwwwwwww service, I'd give Tu Casa 4.5 stars. Oh, and the waiter disappears a bit once he knows you're getting pissed about how long your food is taking... understandable, though. I'm sure he goes through this same scenario on many a night. Anyways, if you want good Spanish/Latin food, stop on in. Just don't be on a time schedule or have to be somewhere else afterward in a hurry. For real. Other than that, I highly recommend this spot for some good eats. -

Went there with a friend today. She had been here once before and had told me what a great place this is. Speaking for myself i have to agree. The food was great, our server was great. For appetizer we had the empanadas which were just okay. As our main course my date had the entraña his meal was perfection a must to order. I ordered the pollo Saltado. The portions were huge definitely shareable. The sauce was delicious and paired greatly with the cooked onions. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends and family.

I really like this place. It's chill, the staff are friendly, and the drinks and food are pretty good. Has a great local feel to it.
I shared a huge meal of:
1. Ceviche Mixto - great flavor! It's served with crunchy corn (kinda like Cornuts?) and a cold sweet potato slice. Delicious.
2. Entrana: Skirt steak with chimichurri sauce - the steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned! The chimichurri sauce was sour though.
3. Pollo al Ajillo: Chicken in garlic sauce - very creamy/rich, kinda salty, but oh so good!
4. Yuca frita - perfectly fried and excellent paired with the jalapeno dipping sauce. Mmmm.
5. Pitcher of sangria - yum. It's nothing special, but it tastes good.
The server asked me if I wanted white rice or yellow rice. I asked her which one she preferred and she said, "Um, they're the same. It's just food coloring." Ha. That's weird. The white rice is outstanding though. Maybe there's a lot of butter in it. -

Went for the first time when I saw the Yelp deal - $20 for $40
We tried the Papa a la Huancaina for an app, which were boiled potatoes smothered in an orange sauce that was supposed to be cheese. The potatoes were cooked perfectly, but I was a fan of the sauce. It was a strange orange color and really bland. The potatoes had to be jazzed up with their house sauces that came in squeeze bottles. One was green and spicy and the other was white and garlicky.
For entrees we both ordered the shrimp with garlic sauce. It was very tasty and came with a generous amount of shrimp. We also ordered a side of fried yucca, which was perfect for dipping in the garlic sauce of my entree :)
For dessert we ordered the tres leches cake....it was good but I've had better. It wasn't soaked enough which may have been due to the end piece we received.
The service was great and the ambiance was decent. It is a small, quaint place. The yelp deal def made the first experience worth it and I'm proud to be supporting local businesses! -

Since then I was a regular "on Fridays" at tu casa...after a month or so they tried to play me and say the deal was off...all good, but you should say that at the begining when I asked and you said "no it's still on"..not after you brought the bill and hoped I was drunk enough to not care...LOL
Decent Spanish food, nothing out of the ordinary....the empanadas are honestly overpriced and they're not even good....salchipapa is yum, and their chicken is ok.
Decor wise, it's nice, and oh Friday's they used to have this Dominican girl sing live music...that was always a plus! I guess this is the competition to the down the block Puerto Rican place "Mi Candela".. -

After finding this place on GrubHub one night while looking for Chaufa (Peruvian Fried Rice) during a drunk food craving, I decided to check it out. I went with a couple Peruvian friends who have not liked any of the Peruvian food they had in NY and had given up on finding anything authentic.
We started with the pisco sours, Peru's trademark cocktail It was too sweet, didn't have enough pisco and was served in a funky martini glass. It belonged on an episode Kitchen Nightmares.
We moved on to a pitcher of sangria that was not very fruity and tasted watered down. Not very good. We still had high hopes for the food though based on how good the fried rice was that we got via delivery.
We ordered the mixed fried rice (chicken, beef and shrimp), lomo saltado and ceviche.
The fried rice delivered big time. Spot on. The seasoning was perfect, the meat juicy and the shrimp as big as the fish in Pee Wee Herman's fish tank. Delicious.
The lomo saltado was also perfect. Crispy fries, juicy and delicious steak, The tomatos and onions were perfect compliments to the rest of the delicious ingredients. Wow.
Last, but not least, was the ceviche. This was the one dish we were most concerned with...it was perfect. The fish was fresh and delicious, the marinade was full of citrus and other flavors...the :Peruvians fawned over it like it was the fountain of youth.
GO HERE, DO IT. Just don't order a pisco sour unless you are at the bar and can tell them how to correctly make it. Also, the waitress-also from Peru-told us the Pollo a la Brassa (chicken) wasn't very good. So avoid it at Tu Casa and check out my other reviews for a better pollo a la brassa place.
For the best chaufa, lomo saltado and ceviche I and some discerning Peruvians have had in NY...this is the spot. -

Delicious!! I had a steak dish and tried some of an appetizer with potatoes. I didn't think service was slow, like another reviewer said. Drinks were good. They have some nice seating in the front where you can watch the silly antics of Steinway street.
