There is no economic reason why this place is so good as it's one of only two restaurants in Yoho and it's far from Lake Louise. I'm glad that the Visitor center in Field pointed it out for my family.

Order the daily special and you won't be disappointed. Today was trout, stuffed with goats cheese and pesto, wrapped in bacon. Delicious! The sides (quinoa, roasted tomatoes, asparagus) were good too.

Seating is limited, I found myself sitting at the cozy bar (5 stools). They might be able to seat 30 indoors, plus another dozen on the patio. While the bar is small, it has the right selection of basics plus mid/high-end distillations like Patron añeo tequila and Tanqueray 10 gin. Bar staff were practising making cocktails for either the owner or friend of the owner - they should be pros when patio season arrives. The beer on tap was from the Mount Begbie microbrewery. There's also a good coffee bar for making proper espressos, lattes, and cappuccinos.

The kitchen staff are very talented and the servers / bartenders put in extra effort. The only error was wait staff mixing up a fruit pie dessert: they thought it was blueberry, but it was actually cherry. I prefer cherry, so it was good for me, but they should really know what they're serving...

In summary, I recommend stopping by en route between Banff and Golden, and since it's just 15-20 minutes from Lake Louise, Truffle Pig competes well with both the local cafes and infamous hotel dining rooms. It's a great achievement for a town of just 200 people.

I feel incredibly reluctant to bestow upon such a mediocre rating upon a fan favorite such as Truffle Pigs, and had this been 3-4 years ago I wouldn't feel entirely comfortable being so frank, yet then again a few years and 25,000 km of physical separation can help stoke the flames of honesty.

I say this from experience as I worked in neighboring Lake Louise for the better part of four years and did frequent TP's with some degree of regularity.  Like many I gushed over the majestic panoramic views of the mountains at our literal doorstep, their jagged peaks jutting forth into the sky with absolute authority, and as one sat, content in the crisp B.C. sun sipping on whatever your beverage of choice may happen to be, you inevitably held warm fuzzy feelings of overwhelming gratitude.  Gratitude for being fortunate enough to see such sights from the comfort of a patio, gratitude for being able to inhale fresh mountain air in place of exhaust fumes, and gratitude for having the fortune to find oneself in the town of Field, British Columbia.  I would go so far as to issue an open challenge to anyone able to provide sufficient evidence of a more picturesque town in our fine nation.

BUT, and there is a big BUT, when you take away all the external factors that one takes into consideration when assessing Truffle Pigs and its overall rating, and solely focus on the food, you will inevitably come to a similar conclusion.  Truffle Pigs is overrated, and I know that in determining a rating for a particular place one is encouraged look beyond one determinant, and I will admittedly concede that TP's has much to offer beyond their fare, yet when looking at "bang for your buck," the return on the dollar is nominal at best and the absurd hype that TP's generates-is well... absurd.

We ate twice at Truffle Pigs while visiting nearby Yoho National Park.  Based on our first experience, I would have given this lovely spot 5 stars.  We had a lovely breakfast--great food, great service, such a beautiful setting. Roesti potatoes? Who offers those?! No one where we live!  And pierogis? They were almost as good as my grandmothers.
We were pleased enough to return for a dinner before we left the area. My partner's meal was wonderful. We shared a bowl of the soup of the day that was truly special.  I would suggest that you steer clear of the Ugly Shrimp.  They were spectacularly awful.  Cheap curry, and way too much.  I couldn't eat them, yet their $14 remained on the check at the manager's insistence.  Truffle Pigs is pretty much the only game in town, so what are you going to do? Great coffee, I must say!

I feel incredibly keen to say what a great little gem we found in Field.

Stopped in Field to stretch our legs and wished we could have stretched our tummies and taken away more than the tasty lemon and poppyseed muffins, banana breads and the best strudel we've had in a very long time.

Cheerful service. Even though they were busy with serving full breakfasts to their lodge guests, they still gave our take-out order the same importance.

Take a breather and leave the highway for a gander through Field and a meal at Truffle Pigs Bistro.

Delightful! Many years since we've been here, and they've moved...into a bigger better place. Lovely interesting flavors. Truffle perogies!? Yes they work! Desert not quite so good but overall delicious. Will be back for sure

Want the best view in town while you dine?

Truffle Pigs is a top-notch restaurant with a gorgeous panoramic view of our beautiful Canadian Rockies. My fiance and I stopped in for an appetizer and a beer a few weeks ago and were impressed with the quality of the food and the service. Although the dining room was lovely, we chose to sit outside on the patio and watch the sun set behind the mountains. Perfect moments!

We sipped clean, crisp Okanagan pints and snacked on jumbo shrimp served with a tangy dipping sauce. They were not only the biggest shrimp I'd ever seen - five to six inches long - they were full of flavor and cooked to perfection.

I'd love to return for a full meal and an overnight stay sometime in their adjacent Kicking Horse Lodge. It's the perfect place to celebrate an anniversary or honeymoon - but a bit pricy so worth saving for a special occasion. On this road trip we were on a shoestring budget, so we left after our appies and sunset and hit the corner store for smokies and beer then headed to a nearby campground. A bit of the best of both worlds!

Yep.  I am giving a place way off the beaten path in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia a 5-star rating!

I recently was going through some pictures from my trip to Banff back in 2004 and reminded me of this place I went to for lunch during my day of exploring the Canadian Pacific main line between Field and Banff.    Truffle Pigs was highly recommend by several photographers I know, and the place did not disappoint in the least.

It was, by far, one of the best burgers I've ever had.  Hamburger with Canadian back bacon, Applewood cheddar and sprouts on a ciabatta bun.   Damn, that was good.

I see that there have been some changes since 2004.  The Truffle Pigs Cafe (as it was called then) is now the Truffle Pigs Bistro; in 2008 they purchased the Kicking Horse Lodge next door.  Slightly different menu from what I can tell... I don't see that burger I had, unfortunately.  But maybe if you ask nice they'll make it for you!  I see that Sean Cunningham is still the owner and head chef - I remember him from 5 years ago!

So if you ever plan on vacationing in Banff/Lake Louise (which I highly recommend), drive the hour or so west into Field BC to eat at this place - you won't be disappointed!  I mean, come on - Truffle Pigs even has a "Food Porn" section on their website!

Fun facts (borrowed off the Truffle Pigs website):

The Town of Field, BC in Yoho National Park

The town of Field is located in the south-eastern corner of British Columbia, located in Yoho National Park and is in close proximity to five mountain parks: Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, Glacier and Mt. Revelstoke. Field is 20 kilometers west of Lake Louise, 70 kilometers west of Banff , 110 kilometers west of Canmore and 174 kilometers west of Calgary ( A 2.5 - 3 hour drive from Calgary airport).  Field is also 55 kilometers east of Golden B.C..

History: Field owes its origin to the Canadian Pacific Railway. In the early years the site was used as a base for railway construction through the Kicking Horse Pass. In its railway hey day, Field served as a divisional point for railway crews complete with a roundhouse and a luxury hotel named Mt. Stephen House.

Population: According to Statistics Canada the total 2001 population of the immediate area is estimated at 3,135 for the area known as the Columbia-Shuswap, an area which includes the towns of Donald, Field and Parson. Although more recent statistics are not available, the area has experienced growth over the past 7 years. Field's current population is less than 300.

Thanks to my lovely friend Q for recommending the Truffle Pigs Bistro!  The restaurant is housed in the Kicking Horse Lodge in a quaint little town called Field.  Arriving in the evening just as the sun was setting, we were treated to a postcard view with just the tops of the mountains backing the town colored orange.  I regret not taking a photo before crossing the bridge, but we were worried that the restaurant would be closing for the night.

We were definitely late-comers, but we were graciously welcomed and seated near one of the windows.  We could see many of the other guests had ordered the special of the evening:  a wild-caught salmon with perfectly cooked vegetables and presented as an interesting tower of food.  We ordered this, as well -- plus the lamb barley soup and the Green Tiger Prawns appetizer.  The prawns were the largest I have ever seen, and very fresh and delicious.  Our server (possibly one of the owners) was very sincere in his description of the food and the beer selection.  We were so impressed, we stopped by the next day on the way to Golden and had the breakfast bagel sandwiches which come with a fried egg and bacon, lettuce, tomato and sprouts.

The interior is nothing fancy, and the space is not very big.  But the quality of the food and the friendly staff make the Truffle Pigs Bistro a highly recommended spot on your next trip to British Columbia.

4 stars because it's probably the only place in town to eat and it's fun, smart, and funky.  The food was very good and the views of the pass and train tracks were awesome.  Unfortunately we arrived after the lunch rush and the staff were probably on a break because most tables were dirty and we waited quite a while for service...but where else could we go?  The staff were helping hotel guests.

Great service, fun and relaxed atmosphere.  I was expecting a little more from my stew. Perhaps it just wasn't the best menu choice.
