A total tourist trap along a touristy street, but whatever... I was a tourist there and in the mood for some gelato. They had a picture on their window for a spaghetti style gelato which looked really intriguing.
Service was slow but good... one girl working the crepes and other guy working the gelatos. They were fairly busy so I'll cut them some slack + he was a really friendly Aussie.
Very sadly their "spaghetti" machine was broken. Ended up ordering some other 3-scoop thing which was quite big and pretty tasty. -

Tucked down some stairs on the the wharf side of Government Street, True North Gelato is one of the more inspired restaurants we found in Victoria. The seating is vibrant red and yellow atomic age style stools and chairs - of whimsical and comfortable design - great to sit in after walking the pavement all day long.
The menu offers a creative selection of thin crust pizzas, sweet and savory crepes, pastas, homemade soups and salads, and drinks for the whole family, including a decent set of three or four draft beers - the IPA was great.
The Gelato case had dozens of yummy choices, and at prices better than several of the tourist traps nearby. Everything is made from scratch, including cheese mixes, batters, doughs and even the Gelato is made with Victoria Island milk.
A great place for a relaxing lunch or dinner, or just to sit at a nice table and enjoy some Italian ice cream. -

Love. This. Place.
Given that, shouldn't I have rated it 5 stars? I was about to, but they seem to always be lacking in a significant number of ingredients. However, the rest of this place is great. I love the chef and if you sit close enough to the kitchen, you can hear him playing metal :) I've come back a few times and I still haven't tried everything I wanted to (I'm a picky person, so this is quite rare). Their crepes are amazing, the pizza was great, and the gelato is good too. I always like design-your-own things and being able to put 3 things in my crepe was exciting...except that they were out of a few things I wanted. Whenever I'm in town again, I shall be back! -

We went there for a crepe and our needs were met. We arrived not long after they opened so it was a slow start, but the server was really friendly and our order didn't take too long. Our crepes were tasty and large enough to fill up an adult. Lots of variety for crepe flavors.
Perhaps not the greatest food one can eat, but fine for a leisurely morning meal. -

This place is alright! I just came for the gelato! their Chai gelato was amazing! but the only problem i had was the small scoop. i thought they could have been a little generous with it and for it to be that much money was a bit pricey for my liking.. But the people and environment was cool! they're very chill there. and it's very modern!

One star for this place is too much. A true tourist trap.
We stopped in for a bit of lunch on a Sunday afternoon. There were about 10 people in the place. We sat near where the crepe machines were so we could watch the crepes being made, here is our first problem.
The waitress was new so I will not fault her in this mess but she did not even take the time to learn the menu and she does not even know what kind of cheese they have. The group of us ordered 2 small salads, 2 small crepes, and a small pizza.
We watched the guy in the kitchen and he was totally lost. I swear it was like his first day but sadly, it wasn't. He swore every other word. He burned himself 3 times as we sat there. He made the pizza first, burned it, and then let it sit there on the counter, not under a heat lamp, while he prepared 1 salad at a time, and then realized he didn't have all the ingredients for our crepes.
The waitress came to tell us there were out of brie. This is were we asked what cheese she did have and she laughed and said she wasn't sure. She had to leave to come back to tell us they had Swiss and mozzarella. We went with Swiss. We then waited another 10 minutes before the guy even started the crepes (remember that our pizza is still sitting on the counter and now our salads are sitting there too).
He made the crepes. Again, one at a time even though he had multiple pans. After he finished one crepe it sat and got soggy while he made the second crepe. Oh, and to top it off, he forgot one of the 3 ingredients in one of the crepes.
The salads were plain and the vegetables not very good. The olives were good. The crepes were soggy, missing ingredients. The pizza was burnt and cold. The gelato had huge ice crystals, a definite sign of freezer burn.
The service was nothing special. They seemed to have 5 ladies standing around and 1 inept cook. They did give us a discount because of the mistake on the crepe but it would have been $62 for lunch. It took over an hour.
Yuck. Oh, in that hour, I didn't see the cook wash his hands once. Not even after touching different types of food and all those plates and wipping his nose, touching his face... He was so rushed. The sad thing is the place was empty. Only 4 tables were in use out of about 26 tables. The decor is fun, the chairs are a funny shape.
The bathrooms were filthy too. One had no soap.
Avoid. There are plenty of other places to get a quick bite. -

My family and I were visiting Victoria for the day, and were recommended to this place by a tour bus concierge. What a mistake... We got in there around 6pm, having to make the 7:30pm ferry back to Port Angeles. The 2 people staffing the place (apparently 'dinner' is not their thing) couldn't have been bothered with taking our order, even after 10 minutes of trying to wave them down (oh by the way, there were only 2 other parties in the restaurant at this time!). Their limited food selection was reduced further because most of the items (including both soups) were already gone for the day, and no one was willing or able to prepare more soup. Pizza was bland and overpriced even by Victoria standards, and their gelato was marginal at best. Oh, and the service was glacially slow, even after notifying the server (better suited at a Grateful Dead concert than a restaurant) of our time crunch. Bottom line: If you want bad food at high price with lousy service, come here. Otherwise, head elsewhere!!!

We stopped at True North Gelato for a quick lunch for my son. It wasn't very crowded but we had to wait anyway. The only waitress finally took our order and then we waited for over an hour for a single small pizza and an Italian soda. We noticed that like us, all of the other patrons were turned around in their seats hoping to catch the server's eye to find out what had happened to their orders. We finally flagged her down and she said she would check with the kitchen staff. The kitchen staff, by the way, consisted of two teen aged boys who were either goofing off or taking smoke breaks the entire time we were there. Our server promised our wait was almost over and retreated to the kitchen. When the pizza finally arrived it was completely burned. To our surprise, the Italian soda was also repulsive. I even heard one of the teen age kitchen boys apologize to the table next to us because he had dropped their pizza on the floor and had to start over. We called our server over to try to find a remedy to the situation and she calmly listened and walked away. Another woman approached our table and without eye contact or even an apology she set the check down and noted that she had given us a discount and then scurried away. It was a $2 discount. They actually charged us more than $16 for the burned pizza. There are plenty of great restaurants in Victoria, stay away from True North Gelato.
