Review from Shiho F.
Carmel by the Sea, CA
After drinking sake all day at an expo, Barting it back to the city, meeting a friend and grabbing a drink at Postrio in the Prescott... all we needed was a solid place to eat some delicious grub. Eddie the bartender whom I call Sr. Flores (from one of my favorite movies Traffic) recommended Tropisueno. So we gave it a whirl. We waited for 30 minutes but with Margaritas in hand so we didn't fret. We sat down to one of the most amazing comforting meals I've had in quite some time. Mike ordered the puerco dish served 3 ways, my gentleman friend carnitas tacos and I ordered the sopa de abodingas. Now the second I ordered it my gentleman friend almost flipped as he thought I was trying to create another GF shitshow. "Why would you order a meatball soup, you know they use flour!?!" was what I could see in his eyes. But I asked our server twice and she checked with the kitchen and was 100% positive so I trusted her and she was so right. No sign of wheat in the most delicious perfectly seasoned meatball soup ever!
Amazing margaritas, chips & trio of salsas (killer and gorgeous) and GF friendly! Fun, hip, dark and sexy ambiance too! -
Review from Chris L.
This place is solid. Real Mexican food and the prices are not too bad. For appetizer, we had a scoop of guacamole and it was a little too salty and thin for me. I prefer my own plainer guacamole with just one ripe Haas avocado, curry powder and a little bit of salt and pepper. They give you light, salty chips with three sauces so I recommend just eating that. We were both stuffed. For entrees, we each had the two-item plate. The carne asada taco was pretty good and the pork enchilada with green sauce was delicious. The vanilla caramel flan is really yummy. They also give you chupchups (sp?) lollipops with your bill.
The original house margarita with chili lining the glass tasted pretty good. And it was strong! I had to wait until the ice melted and watered it down a bit (but I'm not complaining).
Service was excellent. They were patient with us when we were chatting away instead of looking at the drink menu and sent them back 3-4 times before we could decide what to order to eat. The waiter had a lot of great recommendations and knew his food and menu well.
Definitely would come back! -

If I ever come back here, which is doubtful, I would only come for the drinks which were made strong & potent. You cannot beat the excellent people watching location of Yerba Buena Lane. The lane is a thoroughfare from Mission Street to Market street.
The food was bland and mediocre. The menu has very colorful and unfamiliar descriptions. The food was disappointing. The decor was nice and our server was attentive but not enough to make me return. The one bathroom stall for women is poor planning. -

I had a friend visiting from LA, and we wanted to continue drinking and have a good meal. This place met our expectations. Good drinks and we did not have a reservation, however, they were very accommodating. We were able to continue drinking while we waiting for a table of three. The tacos were all fantastic and the pollo was great.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. Their food is great, and its a great atmosphere for a date, or a small group outing. I can't remember the exact entrees we got, but I have had a few different ones now and I have enjoyed them all. I also highly recommend their margaritas.

Review from Faith Y.
Two big misses: super leery waiter + insanely long wait times for our food. All of our appetizers, entrees and drinks arrived at the same time which was overwhelming. As an apology for the wait, they did comp us a chocolate torte with warm, chewy churros which were quite tasty. Still, nothing helped alleviate the antics of the creepy waiter. I'm talking winks, table lingering and uncomfortable questions about where we stayed/lived; I felt so bad for my poor coworker who was getting the brunt of this attention!
Aside from that, we enjoyed most of the food. Some highlights:
- Awesome thin chips served with three kinds of salsa. One was spicy, the other was verde and the third tasted faintly like beans and was served warm. Due to their thinness, it's hard not to plow into the entire bowl
- Chile Verde: Giant chunks of tender pork in a lovely house sauce. All the main entrees are served with your choice of white, pinto or black beans, rice AND tortillas. If you're afraid of carbs, what are you doing at a Mexican place anyway?
I could have done without the Tacos de Cachete (braised beef cheeks). They're a bit too heavy to start off an already meat-laden meal and since it came at the same time as our main courses, it was doubly difficult to finish. The Camarones (Garlic butter shrimp) were too firm and super acidic from the lime but palatable. I did dig that they were spicy though.
The leftovers were enough for a solid dinner the day after and the chile verde tasted even better then. -

It's 8:30pm, and we're downtown. All of the restaurants are shutting down as people leave work for the day and head home. We haven't had dinner, and we're so hungry that we're getting grouchy. Where oh where to go?
Tropisueno serves up authentic Mexican food from 5:30pm until 10:30pm, and are open later on weekends (you can make reservations on http://OpenTable.com). The decor is simple and classic, with wooden beams across the ceiling, wooden tables and chairs, lush plants and candles, and open, airy rooms. Despite the fact that it was crowded, our party of four was seated immediately. We were greeted by a warm bowl of crunchy chips and three types of salsas, which disappeared within seconds. Service was prompt and polite, and we only had to ask for water three times because we scarfed down the salty chips as if we hadn't seen food in weeks.
The dinner menu boasts traditional and interesting variations on classic dishes, from ceviche with shrimp and mango to mole chicken. While tempted by all of the entrees, your best bet is at the bottom of the menu, where you can find the "old school combo plates" (their words, not mine!). I don't know when enchiladas became "old school," but they're really good. You can mix and match among tacos, enchiladas, tamales and/or flautas, ordering either two or three, and they offer different selections for each platter. You can order your tacos and enchiladas with carne asada, grilled chicken, veggie, or cheese; tamales come with either chile and cheese, pork, or chicken; and the flautas are served with chicken tinga.
We were all happy with what we ordered, and there was extra food to go around - perhaps we shouldn't have had that second bowl of chips with guacamole? Portions are generous, so be prepared to share or take home leftovers. Margaritas come in pint glasses (!), and although we came to dine and not to drink, Tropisueno is a solid place to come for happy hour. This restaurant is affordable, fun, and open late - a great downtown combo. -
Review from Rebecca H.

When I first tried tamales, living in the dorms, gross was my first impression. Then I tried Trader Joe's tamales, and now, I just can't get enough of these little suckers. I know, I know, what kind of food person are you that eats microwaved tv dinner tamales? Bite me (unless you're a vampire).
At Tropisueno, the cornmeal cover is perfect, the pork is tender, warm, succulent, and juicy. However, in between all that is way too much pepper! I'm a salt and pepper, heck, I eat white rice straight with butter, salt, and pepper, and nothing else. But when the taste of pepper overpowered the tamale deliciousness, I started questioning the universe.
PS - Enchiladas no bueno. Haven't sat in the oven long enough for cheese to fuse into taco shell into pork.
PPS - If you're around Market and craving some horchata, this place is probably your best bet. -

There are so many reviews I'll keep this one direct:
The Good:
Great, spicy salsas.
Fresh flavorful chips
Taco, tacos
The Bad:
I wasn't impressed with their torta. The milanesa is fried shredded beef. It comes topped with guac, sour cream and refriend beans. (In my opinion, hold the beans and toss some Mexican cheese on that!). Be warned, as they let me know when ordering, the torta takes awhile to prepare.
The Ugly:
If you get there between 12 and 1 you'll have to wait awhile in THE LINE. It'll seem like every employee on Market is in front of you.
The food sometimes comes out lookin' a hot mess (but beauty isn't required for taste).Listed in: Taco Flavored Kisses, @ Market & 3rd, The Company's Dime

After an awkwardly-lengthy brunch visit elsewhere earlier in the day, this lively restaurant was quite refreshing. The pork in my chili verde dish was delicious, and somehow, my margarita tasted at least as great. Chocolate flan weaseled its way onto the table, and I don't regret it one bit. My date and I were served by a speedy, friendly staff to boot.
I hear there are free drinks when attending in groups of 5 or more. Would definitely return! -

Tropiseuno deserves to be bumped up to 5 stars for being an always reliable happy hour spot. This is one of my favorite HH spots in the City because the drinks are good and cheap, and the HH bar menu is extensive and legit. Tacos, quesadillas, ceviche, flautas, and much more! All very decently priced! You could even have an entire meal during happy hour, and save quite a bit of money thanks to those very happy prices!
Oh, and the chips and salsa are also delicious and always free!Listed in: Good Happy Hour Spots in SF!

Their website says it all: authentic, traditional Mexican food and prices that speak for themselves.
A cool spot, which is walk up and order. A great place for a quick, delicious bite. Lots of meat and salsa choices. And, a quick walk from Moscone or nearby hotels.

Come on now this place doesn't deserve the rating it currently has. I went here based on the Yelp score and was so dissapointed.
I felt so ill after eating at Tropisueno. The Margaritas are just ok.
For awesome food and margaritas go to La Penza Azul (Alameda) or Don Pisto's (SF). -

This is the spot for the best margaritas in downtown.Ordered the fish tacos, chicken quessadillas and margaritas for happy hour. Thats all a gal needs after a long day of work.
The dinner menu is a la cart which is better than the taqueria style lunch menu, but it's good to have that options. I dont always want to walk to Cancun for my burrito. -

Food poisoning.
I've been a regular for the past year - I frequented Tropisueno with multiple groups of friends probably once every other week. That's changed... It's been an excruciating three days (of throwing up, diarrhea, etc.) and my stomach remains upset to the minute of this review.
I ordered the pork chop entree, which clearly tasted weird (I've ordered this countless times to know), and the tempest (cocktail).
I doubt my friends and I will be returning in the foreseeable future. I do not tolerate food poisoning and lack of quality control, so they've seriously shattered my trust. It was especially upsetting given I had booked an expensive non-refundable travel over the weekend.
[Update/Bump from 1- to 3-stars] I reported the issue to the manager, and received a prompt but extremely detailed response. I appreciate that they took the courtesy to confront the issue and outline what appears to be a rigorous food inspection/preparation process they implement at the restaurant.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Big entree portions.
Affordable prices.
Nice ambiance.
And a parking garage 1/2 block away?!
Am I in SF?!?
It does sound too good to be true, so I made sure to rub my eyes twice and blink a couple of times to make sure I wasn't seeing things. Indeed, Tropisueno is REAL.
As soon as we sat down, hot, crispy thin chips with three different salsas (watch out for that bright orange habanero!) magically appeared out of nowhere. Our hands just kept diving back into the bowl and next thing you know it was empty. But, two minutes later, it was full again! whoa! magic I tell ya!
Then the rest of the food came: fried sweet plantains, corn masa filled with chorizo and corn, chicken with mole poblano, carne asada tampiqueno and camarones tropisueno. We couldn't believe how big the portions were for a restaurant in this part of town AND how affordable it is. It was pretty tasty too. (And that's not the margarita talking!)
Service was just plain awesome. Fast, efficient and professional. I can't believe it's taken me this long to return here and try dinner. I highly recommend it for casual date nights or big groups looking to celebrate birthdays. Tropisueno is muy bueno!Listed in: The Write Kind of Love, Good for Groups

Tropisueno represents a certain point on the Margarita Graph where the price point and deliciousness meet in perfect harmony. I can't speak to the food (other than the free salsas you get with purchase of drink that are GREAT) but I've had a margarita or four here.
Tropisuenos margaritas are super strong, not TOO sweet, and rimmed with a chili salt concoction that leaves just a little heat on your tongue. Then conveniently, you have to take another sip to squelch that. Rinse. Repeat. In short, I could drink 54 in one sitting. Sure, I'd die, but it might be worth it.Listed in: San Franspiring, Tex Mex Taco Temptation, Travel Can Suck. I've been to this place a few times now for lunch and dinner and I've noticed it's consistently packed!
Priced right for the SOMA/Financial District Area, Tropisueno feels like a more authentic version of Chevy's. The lunch line moves relatively close and the bustling atmosphere makes it a fun place to dine. Best thing is probably the free chips and dip. There's another place down the street on (2nd) called Maya if you want to try better Mexican food. -

Went here for a birthday party on Saturday. There were 20 of us and as you can imagine not everyone arrived on time. Luckily here you order you food at the counter, pay and them have it delivered. They don't take reservations, so we went early to save a long row of tables right by the window. This was easy and the staff didn't mind.
The food here is good. I got the 3 item combo: chicken tamale with mole, chicken taco and chicken enchilada with mole. The food was great, but the mole was $1 more for each item which meant that my $11.95 lunch became $13.95. The combo is one of the more expensive things on the menu, tacos are much cheaper. Add $10 for a watery margarita and you have one expensive lunch! Next time I will skip the drink.
The staff was very good in clearing plates and bringing more chips.
I will definitely go here again with a big group! -

My friends and I wanted to enjoy a nice dinner before the 7pm Giants game at AT&T Park on Friday night. Since we arrived relatively early at 5:30p, we were one of the first to be seated in the dining room. The bar area, however, was totally packed. The waiter was attentive throughout the evening with water refill and chips. The kitchen was prompt in dishing out our entrees. We thoroughly enjoyed our feast with sufficient time to take a leisurely 15-minute walk to the Park before the first pitch.
I ordered the Tampiqueño (thin-cut grilled carne asada). My companions had Chicken with Mole Poblano, and Chile Verde. All three dishes were great and served in good portions. The beef was tender and flavorful. The chicken was moist. The pork was one of the best in the City. This place is WAY better than any Chevy's and the prices are very reasonable for a cloth-napkin establishment.
The restaurant is very lively, partly because there is no separation between the bar and dining area. Consequently, the loud noise does travel into the dining area; but it did not hinder our conversation at our table.
I titled this review as "hidden gem" because the location of the restaurant is in a pedestrian thoroughfare and not visible from the street. Unless you are attending a function at the Moscone across the street, you probably would not see or aware of this place.
Parking is relatively reasonable. Approx one block away is the Mission Street garage. The rate is $3/hour, the same as street meters.
I will definite return to try other menu items. Reservation is highly recommended. As we were leaving, we heard the hostess telling "walk-ins" that they only have tables for reservations. -

That Ruggy J is a tricky one, but it will now take minimal persuasion to get me over to Tropisueno for their ridiculously stiff $5 happy hour margaritas, famous red-green-orange salsa trio, chunky guac, and crazy-fresh ceviche. And if you time it right (ie: arrive around 5pm) you can luck out with a table before the bar packs out. Perfect place to share some cheap eats and gossip with the amigos. I just wish they bottled and sold that creamy orange salsa because I'd put it on everything. I'm loving it so much I came here twice on a Friday night.
This place is crackin'! We came here and the tiny bar area was packed! We squeezed our tooshies up to the bar to order and we were greeted with some super friendly bar tenders. I got the house margarita. It has the WOW factor I'm looking for in a drink. A margarita on the rocks rimmed with salt and chili powder, say what!!?? That's unique.
I heard the salsa was amazing so I had the bar tender hook me up with some. Another WOW factor item! You get three different salsas with your chips: orange, green and red. at first I really liked the orange salsa and I wanted to love it based on all the reviews but then the more I ate, the more I disliked the sunflower-ish flavor. However, the green, avocado salsa saved the day with it's special pizazz. The chips were warm and fresh too.
The thing that made me give this place 5 stars is their finishing touch. When they bring you your bill you get a Mexican lollipop. And I mean the good ones. Not the generic ones that your cousin gets for their kids pinata. I think the brand is Chupa. It is such a clever little treat!Listed in: Best Happy Hour, Mexi Food

This place was WAY too busy to wait for a table, so we decided to place our order "to-go". So this review is solely on my take-out. Staff suggested the Mole, Done! And an order of chips, salsa and guacamole. That's all I needed, that's all I have to say... Mole, Do it!

This place is alright.
Bf took me here since we were semi-craving burritos. But surprisingly, the taco section caught my eyes. And for only $2.99 and up? I was expecting a rather large taco with loaded veggies and what nots. My bf ordered the Mojado burrito, since he claimed that it was pretty big.
But to my disappointmen, the taco ended up being surprisingly small. You better order something else if you want to get super stuffed. My bf definitely did not fib when he said the burritos were huge.
However, taste-wise, you could probably go to a local taqueria around mission and find that the quality tastes equivalent to this place, or even better, at a better and cheaper price. The taco, which comes in whatever meat you choose, only had a few chunks of chicken, which is the meat i chose, some sort of spicy sauce, and little bits of onions and cilantro. I guess so...
Free freshly made chips though, so that's nice. The ambiance of the place is pretty unique, with a cafeteria style line where you make your order before sitting down by either the bar or at the tables.
Their bathroom does need to be cleaned however. But overall, this place is a-okay. -

Had a great Friday night dinner with friends here. We were early for our rezervation so we sat at the bar. GREAT bartenders - super friendly, talkative and made good drink suggestions. When our table was ready we ordered platanos fritos and ceviche for apps - YUMMO. Not the best platanos i've had, but pretty good. For dinner we had the Tampiqueno (it was standard, prob wouldn't order again), chile verde (the BF said it was really good), flautas (from the apps menu - pretty good).
THe place is great for a social night out. Lively and fun environment but not cheesy. It was loud and the drinks were flowing (at least for us). I wouldn't say its the best mexican ever, but its good enough for me to return for a fun dinner with friends. -

I'm generally wary of Mexican restaurants outside the Mission but this one impresses me more and more every time. You can't go wrong with any of the menu items (the rice is fresh as are the tamales and enchiladas), the portions are generous, and the ambiance is really nice. I have yet to be disappointed! Will for sure be back to try everything else.

Aye caramba! Thursday night. 7pm. PACKED. 2-hour wait. Glad my reservations paid off! We were whisked into this ultra-busy cantina with an awesome ambiance and festive atmosphere. It's a wonder what lighting and decor can do to transform a place!
First up...chips and salsa. Piping hot and fresh...so good that we finished the entire bowl! Yikes.
For my main course, I ordered the chile relleno with cheese. It was accompanied by your choice of beans (I chose black beans), and Mexican rice. The entire dish was so delicious with the right blend of seasonings and flavors!
I can see why the place is so popular and packed! Prime location, great ambiance, amazing/plentiful food at great prices = no brainer! I'll definitely bring my family back here, since they enjoy Mexican food.
The only downfall? Three lame items on the dessert menu -- really? Two of them were various flavors of flan, and the other was tres leches cake. Word of advice: Beef up the dessert menu and people will avoid going elsewhere to indulge in their sweet tooth. -

1. Make reservations if you can, this place is hoppin! Even on a Sunday night!
2. Get the mole sauce with chicken if you get the option, it's the best mole I have ever ever had!! Not too sweet or chalky. Beef tacos are also a good bet.
3. If you can get refills on the chips and salsa...it's worth it. The best trio of salsa I've had in awhile. The red and the orange (hot queso like dip) are very strong and spicy and the tomatillo guac salsa is more mild. They are all fantastico!
4. The margaritas looked amazing. If I ever come back here to visit, I will definitely make a point to get one or five.
5. Service was attentive and the ambiance is authentic, trendy, and casual all at the same time.Listed in: San Francisco

If you think that "Chevy's" is authentic Mexican in SF you are going to LOVE Tropisueno! As for the rest of us, just make a beeline for the Mission.
Where do we start....
We were entertaining an out of town friend by visiting a museum and wanted something quick Union Square-ish. This seemed to work.
Once we got in the line to place our order we found out that they were not doing tortas. Really. That is like walking into an Italian restaurant and learning there is no spaghetti.
Then I saw two, count'em two microwaves in use right up front. Wow, what is this Subway? Eye-opener.
Once we finally all ordered and found a table we waited and waited and waited. And then one by one they served us our meals. Not all at once, but one at a time. So that was awkward. I had a chicken quesadilla and a baja fish taco. It was ok. Part of my quesadilla had almost no chicken on it. The taco looked pretty but was just average.
No one seemed enthused by our meal and we had 5 people. Our guest was the last served and by that time we were all done with our meals. Awkward.
Did I mention that she was waiting so long my sister had to ask the cashier about it. They forgot the order!
So not only did she have to wait forever for a very average meal they offered no refund, discount or even an apology.
Steer clear of this tourist magnet locals. Even Chipotle is a more authentic meal than this place. -

Tropisueno, you are so delicious! Looking for a giant and delicious burrito for lunch? This is your place! Or, is it later in the evening and you are looking to sit down to some awesome Mexican food? Also your place!
Tropisueno smoothly transitions from daytime taqueria to upscale Mexican dinner spot. Their food is fresh and flavorful. They also have the best housemade salsa in town. During lunch, you can get all the salsa you want from the salsa bar. At dinner, they bring you chips and three types of salsa after you are seated.
As much as I love this place, I have two negative(ish) notes. First, I found their serving of guacamole as an appetizer is a bit small for the price. Secondly, they take OpenTable reservations as late as 15 minutes before the kitchen closes. My friend made a reservation for 6 on her birthday and when we arrived we were told we had 15 minutes to order or we couldn't get food. Luckily everyone made it on time, but it was weird to have no warning about that when the reservation was made.
However, I consider these minor setbacks to the awesomeness that is Tropisueno! It continues to be my go-to place for both lunch and dinner downtown. -

Tropisueno was surprisingly crowded on a Tuesday night. Service was a little spotty - my beer didn't arrive until after I was a couple bites into my entree. But besides that the experience was positive. Each table is set with chips and three different types of salsa - something tasty to keep you busy while waiting for your food. I ordered three tacos al carte - carne asada, chicken, and carnitas. Nothing particularly impressive, but they all (especially the carne asada) were satisfying and good for a quick dinner near Union Square.

I really wanted to give this place more stars, BUT they so did me wrong on my order. Came here for lunch with co-workers. It has your traditional Mexican vibe. I ordered a grilled shrimp salad (darn low carb diet), fairly easly your thinking, right? My co-workers order tons of tacos, burriotos, mole dishes and they get their order lightning fast. Me, nothing, 30 minutes goes by and finally I get my order after everyone is finished, lol. Lesson learned. I won't be back after that. The one thing I really liked about this place was the constant flow of chips n salsa, it looked soooooo delicious. FYI this place gets crazy busy, so come early!

Tropisueno is a classy Mexican place near the Metreon/Union Square. My friends and I decided on this place for our monthly get together. In an alley with other restaurants, this restaurant was PACKED on a Friday around 7 pm. The bar area was filled and the entire restaurant was filled up. Good thing I had reservations through OpenTable which was very convenient. Decor was a little tropical, carribean but very very dark and very hot. There wasn't much ventilation and with all the people in there, it got a little uncomfortable.
We were seated promptly, as soon as our third party member arrived which was nice, and I didn't even have to tell them that we were all there. We started with ceviche, which was a little fishy in my opinion and all I could taste was the fish, the other flavors that I attribute with ceviche did not come through. The onion was light, the lime and citrus was also very light, there wasn't enough variety in the flavors to make me want more of it.
The chips and salsa are just as good as everyone says. If I come back to this restaurant, it's for the chips and salsa. They serve three types of salsa with their complimentary chips and they are all diverse enough to be very yummy. The light, airy chips were so addicting. I wish I could eat those practically every day and at every Mexican restaurant I go to.
I had the carne asada which was done with skirt steak that was low quality in my opinion. It was chewy, very sinewy and was not cooked tender enough. Maybe I rarely eat carne asada in this fashion but was not a fan. The enchilada it was served with was nothing special either. Something you can get at any Mexican restaurant. The guac, the little dollop that was provided was actually very good like others say. Chips, salsa and guac, things that most Mexican places shouldn't mess up were AMAZING.
Overall, overpriced Mexican in a very dark atmosphere that was nothing special beyond the chips, salsa and guac.
As my friend said, "This is the perfect place to have a date if you have acne", lol -

LOVED this place! Made a reservation to ensure we were seated in time to see Act of Valor at the Metreon. The margaritas were fantastic. The chips and salsa were so unique. Each of the three salsas were delicious. The food was spot-on. Delicious guacamole, tasty steak, and excellent service. Would definitely go back. It was quite busy, especially in the bar area so definitely make a reservation if you're on a schedule.

I went here for lunch and had the chicken milanesa torta. I give that 5 stars alone! For the price, you get a lot and it is so fresh. When I got my order, it was so hot, I had to wait a few minutes before I could take a bite. The chicken was super crispy and juicy and the bread was toasted perfectly. I tried to finish it, but that was a bad idea... should have just saved half and had the rest for dinner. I also got a house margarita but wasn't that impressed - next time I'll get straight tequila. I would definitely go back for lunch and would like to go for dinner.

I can't stop thinking about their spicy orange salsa! It's part of their salsa bar which is awesome. I think it's much better than La Victoria Taqueria's orange sauce (legendary in San Jose)and contends with Papalote for best salsa in SF. I always love Mexican places that have an open (salsa) bar. Their chips were also great. Good crunch, not too greasy and more on the thin side.
The carne asada burrito I had was ENORMOUS. I was so full after it. The meat was a tender medium done-ness. Paired with some of the salsas from the salsa bar made for an excellent burrito.
A great place for good Mexican especially if you work in FiDi. Can get pretty crowded during lunch time so try to avoid rush hour. You order at the front and they bring your food out to you. During the wait time, load up on salsa!
