Love Tropika! One of my top Thai/Malaysian cuisines.

Ordering food here is all about sharing. Satays (skewers), Roti, Crab Cakes, Spicy Raddish Cake, Nasi Goreeng, just to name a few. However, it can get quite pricey.

First time I tried tropika was 4-5 years back at the cambie location and was pretty excited when this location opened up. If I were to have reviewed this location when it first opened up, I would have given it a 2 star, but its definitely stepped up its game lately.

Def make resos on the weekends around dinner time.

Location, service, and food prep were all very good!

My first experience with Tropika was a few years back and on Robston Street. In comparison to the Robson location, this was much better. The cuisine itself is mainly Thai but I felt it was a tad Canadianized, but nonetheless, I welcomed it with open arms.

We all shared the Satays, the Coconut Seafood Fried Rice, Broccoli with Sliced Beef, and Chicken Cubes with Cashew Nuts. Overall, the food was great. The satays, sliced beef and chicken cubes were cooked perfectly. They were not overly cooked and sure not undercooked *phew*. The coconut rice is to die for! It is creamy, sweet and loaded with seafood. The price per food ratio is very reasonable.

The service was attentive and polite, the food came out in a fair amount of time - not too quick where I thought they had already pre-prepared the food and merely just zapped it with the microwave and not too slow where I thought they went to Thailand and got fresh coconuts for our rice. It was just enough time where we could enjoy each other's company. The appetizers came first which held our stomachs until the mains came.

The ambiance, which I don't care much for (if it's relatively clean, I won't mind) was modern, very clean but the lighting was dark.

Overall, I had an enjoyable meal and will definitely recommend this place to anyone!

Here's another restaurant I wouldn't pick but when it's a group event like a bday & someone else organizes it then there isn't a choice which was the case this past Sat. Our group of 16 took up 2 tables. I ordered beef curry & 2 pieces roti for myself & still crossed $20 with tax & 10% tip. Flavors are pretty good as I expected. Prices here are inflated for the amount of food u get. I was still full by the end but I wan't too hungry to start. Again big eaters are disadvantaged. While the bday girl was opening her presents at the end one of the managers was hovering at our tables anxious for us to leave so the next group at the door could be seated. The waiters were clearing the tables & wiping them down before we even got up to leave. Maybe there was a time limit we exceeded. They don't take Visa...only Amex & MC. They don't take ent book coupons if it's a large group as well not that we had any & we already knew this before hand. Poor value & expensive restaurant. Probably better places to go for T food elsewhere.

Tropika is a mix of Malaysian and Thai cuisine, however I felt some Chinese influence in their food. They have 3 locations in the Vancouver area. Ive been to the Cambie location a few times but this is only my second time at the Aberdeen location. This place fills up quickly on weekends, reservations are highly recommended.

I find Tropika to be a safe "bet" as the food is always consistent. The food always taste good with no surprises. At the same time, you may get a little bored of the dishes as it may all taste similar once you come here too often.

For appetizers, I recommend the Roti Canai ($2.95 each). It's Malaysian style flat-bread served with curry sauce. It's buttery, flaky, and a little chewy. The curry sauce is a little spicy with a hint of chili powder and fish sauce.

For the main course, we ordered the Indonesian Style BBQ Pork Ribs ($13.95), Terung Udang Kering($13.95), and the pineapple fried rice with ham and chicken ($14.95). The ribs were good, very tender and a little spicy. The fried rice look great on top of the half cut pineapple but it was a little dry. The highlight was the Terung Udang Kering which was eggplant stir-fried with sambal sauce. It was a little spicy, sweet, and salty at the same time! It has so much flavour and the texture was very soft and creamy.

Tropika serves up some good Malay/Thai fusion food and it never disappoints. For decent consistent food, it gets 3.5 stars.

How did I miss reviewing this place!

Tropika has been one of my staple restaurants going back to when I was a student and I still love it.  I've been to several locations in BC and AB.  This one is conveniently located on the main floor of Aberdeen Centre.

I enjoy the menu here and there's a nice mix of starters, mains and noodles/rice.  Food is very consistent.  Prices can be a touch high for an Asian restaurant.  Service is good.

My personal favorites are the roti canai (mmmm, I always get this here... get at least a couple of orders) and the satay sticks with the peanut sauce to start.  Then add on a meat/seafood dish and pineapple fried rice or pad thai, and you'll be nicely full with leftovers to go!

They're always had a coupon in the Entertainment book for as long as I can remember so it's a great deal if you have one handy.  (And if you're not using yours, I'm happy to take it off your hands!)

From the minute we walked in the door, we could tell that this was a hot place to eat. The atmosphere is awesome...its dimly lit but is bright enough with candlelight. The atmosphere reminded me of several western style steakhouses I have been to...fantastic.

The Singapore Chili Crab is a must. I am a big fan of spicy but I am not that big a fan of Crab (believe me, I don't understand why either) but this was great; I'm a fan. Mix a couple of these great dishes with some Indonesian Spring Rolls and Sweet and Sour Pork and you have a pretty diverse meal. We were well treated and the prices were great. We had a great time and will be back.

When im feeling exotic or simply don't feel like cooking, I like to come here!

when you put Thai and Malaysia together you get Tropika!! (sexy ain't it?)
i've been seeing a lot of mixed reviews about this place, my only comment is that "yall probably went on a bad day" which is normal for a lot of restaurants, so suck it up and move on! ;)

Ok on to the food. The first thing You gotta order is the Roti Canai otherwise known as Malay bread! very light doughy and flaky and comes with a curry sauce.

Try the satays (chicken pork or beef) but u gotta order a minimum of 6. its only 1.20 each and comes with peanut sauce.

For the main course Order the Singapore style fried rice, Singapore noodle, (both fairly hot so for the those of you wimps that can't handle spice i would leave this out :p). Pad Thai (u can choose hot or spicy),
Indonesian Style BBQ ribs- This dish is the truth right here!! they come with a special spicy sauce! very tasty. The Thai style red curry duck- a little fatty but the flavor is there!! For the seafood. Try any of their crab dishes! all seasonal prices and wonderfully presented at your table!

Each dish is bursting with unique flavor that you just have to see and taste to believe. and believe me i've been coming here for years!! if you simply just let your guard down and give in to different flavors around the world, you will have a whole new respect for different cultures and their culinary pallets.  So give this place a try!  and like i said before I don't mess around when it comes with serious food! Fat people know their food son!! ....................... K im done :) .....

WAIT! i forgot about the spring rolls!!!............. their aiight..... ;)

From reading the other reviews, I have to say I disagree.

Every time I went there (which is quite a bit) I was seated right away, and the service was prompt. Ordering food and drinks is always a breeze.

The food is always consistent, my favourite is the sambal bunchies...I want some right now!

Tropika is a really good place for dinner. It can get a tad pricey but the food is really good.

Roti, the pineapple fried rice, pad thai, and seafood dishes are all a must. The staff could be more helpful when it's busy but they're fine.

The restaurant is a chill, relaxing place with wicker chairs. The have an interesting selection of drinks as well.

The food is good and it's a great place for a late dinner or date.

Tropika has always been my family's traditional "after Christmas meal"....I think it all started when Tropika on Cambie was the only thing open on Christmas day many years ago. So for me, it's not a complete Christmas without having their Roti Canai, satays and their leung ye fried tofu...when for everybody else it's probably leftover turkey or ham. :0

I always appreciate their black gluttonous rice dessert with coconut milk to finish my meal :)

so i've actually tried Tropika a few times but the last time i visited was ~3 or 4 yrs ago. What i remembered was that they have REALLY good beef satays and delicious fruity / tropical drinks.

I like their roti canai and i believe i ordered their singaporean..vermicelli; we also ordered a lot of other dishes and all the entrees were satisfying.

My wife and I wanted to have a nice sit-down meal between our arrival to the mainland and a flight out of YVR.  A friend recommended we check out the Aberdeen Centre.  As I had been craving Thai food, Tropika was a natural fit.  We had eaten at the one on Robson previously and liked it.

As I was very hungry, I ordered a seafood hot pot all to myself and ate the entire thing - it was abundant (shrimp, squid, mussels, scallops, halibut), spicy, and delicious.  The roti we ordered to accompany it was also delicious, fresh, and great to pick up the flavors of our dishes.  Tropika's roti (and Malaysian Roti in general) is more similar to naan than Indian Roti, in that it is leavened, but tends to be stickier and doughier.

My wife ordered a dish described as "vegetarian nirvana" which we both found to be a bit too subtle (or perhaps bland), especially compared with the bold flavors and spice of the seafood hot pot.

We closed with a hot version of the sweet rice dessert we had all the time when we were in southeast asia, but found it to be grainier than we were used to.

As we were dining in the middle of the afternoon on a Saturday, there wasn't much business in the restaurant and service tended to be a bit slow and inattentive.  We also found the space to not be as intimate as we normally like a restaurant to be.

    Pretty satisified
I came here with my family a couple weeks ago. We ordered chicken, beef, and lamb satays, roti canai, shredded dry pork in sticky rice roll, Pad Thai, and Tropika Special Fried Rice. The food was extremely tasty and good; my favorite was the roti canai (warm, soft, chewy pastry type bread with a mild spicy curry dipping sauce) and the pad thai (noodles in a sweet, sour and mildly spicy sauce with egg, lots of shrimp and meat, and crushed peanuts).
Service: was satisfactory. The waiters were attentive but a bit on the snobby side, in my opinion. They were also a little bit pushy trying to "suggest" that we order more dishes.
Ambiance: was great. large windows gave it a more "open" feel and the decor was nice.
Value: the food was great, but a little on the pricey side as the portions were not that big. However, I will definitely return.

Standard has dropped!!!!!! I have been a patron of Tropika for many years. Sadly, when they moved to Aberdeen center. It has become more of a Pan-Asian restaurant.
They're supposed to serve authentic Malaysian/Singaporean food.
I'm thinking they're catering towards the Hong Kong & Taiwanese
    crowd.

Small portions, donkey service and pricey. Don't see why I should come here unless someone treats me.

    Not a fan.

We came here as a group, ordered a bunch of food and everything was either sub-par or satisfactory.

Roti = too doughy and not flaky enough. The curry dipping sauce was too oily.
Honey Garlic Spareribs = nice flavor, but definitely over-fried.
Lamb Curry = Lamb was kinda tender, curry was decent
Duck Curry = duck was good, but the curry was too watery and was not even hot at all
Sambal string beans = didn't have a nice crisp like I expected but it was drenched in oil.
Sambal clams = probably the best dish out of all of them
Coconut rice and Pad Thai = nothing to call home about.

The price was expensive (avg = $11-15 a plate) and the portions were a bit small. Don't think I'd come back or recommend the restaurant to anyone.

BEST ROTI EVER! Neither oily nor flat, it is perfect and fluffy. The satays are also very flavorful. I've heard that people have complained about the food being unclean, but i have not experienced an upset stomach after eating here.

Don't go here. We waited one hour for a table only to find six open tables as we were being shown to our table. They sat us at a plastic table with flimsy chairs in the corner. We asked for one of the more comfortable seats that were open. They told us to go somewhere else. I do not know how this place stays full with service like that.

This is Malaysian and Thai food which is very, very tasty, and very very hot and spicy. This is not regular, normal fare. It is strange, unusual, and very exotic food. The rices are flavored, lemon-ginger, etc. The roast 1/2 chicken come with ginger-garlic or chili pepper dipping sauces. The sattai chicken comes with a peanut-chili dipping sauce. This is for when you want the rare, irregular, unconventional menu of different flavors.

Perhaps we are a bit biased coming from the states, but each and every time we head up north we just expect that the dishes served to us would inherently be better than that of the Asian cuisine served to us in the states. In any case, Tropika did not disappoint and it was definitely a perfect stop for us after our long early morning drive. Cannot quite remember the lunch combination that we ordered, but the dish was relatively cheap at around eight Canadian dollars and consisted of curry beef brisket with potatoes and a side of yellow ginger rice. At first, it did not seem like an amount of food that would satisfy my appetite, but it was nice to be proven wrong for once. There was, however, one particular part of the dish that intrigued me. The best description that could be offered was that it was a hard-boiled egg that was deep-fried, but if anyone has a better explanation as to what it was from the picture posted, please let me know. Also, as a large fan of lychee, do not order their tropical house drink or whatever it was because you may as well be ordering ice water with a dash of grenadine and it would be about the same experience.
