Often the chef's tasting menu at nice restaurants is a bit too creative for me, however, here at Tristan is was AMAZING. The creative little touches to each dish were SO good. The cappachino (sp) soil underneath pumpkin deliciousness was so good! Very autumn-y. We had the 5-course and it was a perfect amount and left me not wishing for anything more and yet not overly stuffed.
To top off all of the amazing courses, were the wine pairings. Not only were they perfect, but our server was VERY knowledgeable about wines. I couldn't even pronounce or remember some of the long Italian names, but he sure could. Wine was perfect temperature and perfectly paired. Nice job!
(P.S. check out the bathroom sinks, they are really neat! Yes I realize that I have the personality of an 8 year old, but seriously....go wash your hands.)
I asked my husband if we could eat here everyday for the rest of our lives, he said sure....if I become a billionaire....so I am going to work on that. -

Haute cuisine with fantastic service. I had the homemade pasta with truffle and espresso powder. I was pleased by the uniqueness (and frankly size) of the dish.
But the atmosphere and decor was dreadfully tacky and dated. Not in a cute, forgivable way... but it's like it was designed by the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
My review would be a 3.5, but they do have free valet (a rarity), so Tristan earns a 4 in my books! -
Review from Rachel G.
Came here with my parents while on vacation. I was on vacation, they have a home on Johns Island. My mom found the restaurant and we went. First, free valet. Woop! Parking is rough in the summer time downtown.
White tablecloths and helpful servers. We had a server and a server's assistant. All questions were answered. The food is "contemporary american" and they use lots of different techniques in preparation.
They offer an a la carte menu as well as a 5 or 7 course tasting menu. We opted for a la carte.
The bread, amazing. Warm and soft. The server also brought us an amuse to start off. It was ok, some sort of fig compote. I ordered the corn soup with crab, the soup could have been hotter but I ate it so fast it didn't really make a difference. The soup was the most velvety texture I've ever had, I couldn't believe it. My mom ordered the beet salad with goat cheese. I kept taking bits off her plate, it was so fresh and delicious. My dad had some pork belly dish that he seemed to enjoy.
After our appetizers they brought us a tiny scoop of strawberry jalepeno sorbet. It was interesting and tasty! You couldn't taste the pepper but you could feel the heat on the back of your tongue.
Main courses: I ordered the scallops two ways. Two scallops pan seared and two scallops that were whipped into a mousse, reformed, and butter poached. YUM served over israeli cous cous with broccoli and mussels. It was so good but I got so full my dad had to help finish. The scallops were perfectly cooked and light and airy.
Dessert: I ordered the hazelnut butterfinger. Very rich and tasty. My mom helped me eat it. I just want to know how to create the butterfinger layer, it tasted like the candy bar, but better. My dad ordered the passionfruit pudding cake that came with a float of thai basil ice cream and lemongrass gingerale. The float was so refreshing and anything basil is a winner in my book.
I would definitely return here and recommend anyone thinking about it to do the same. They have a private room in the back and the coolest bathroom sink. Definitely worth the price, food and service were superb! -

Thank you, Yelp, again, for this terrific restaurant recommendation. We were shopping at the City Market in mid-October when our stomachs cried out for food. I checked Yelp on my phone and, voila, Tristan showed up with great ratings.
We were a little taken back when we walked into the restaurant because this is definitely an upscale place, and we weren't dressed for the occasion. However, the wait staff seemed undaunted and we were shown to a table. Because it was Sunday, their menu selections tended toward brunch-type dishes.
My wife ordered their Quiche Forrestiere. My wife said that without doubt, it was the best quiche she'd ever had (I had a bite and would have to agree). I ordered the Crab and Poached Egg Carbonara, which had just extraordinary flavors. I didn't want to stop eating. They also served us some incredible baked goods during the meal, e.g., a sun-dried tomato and basel popover and an apple cinnamon muffin. The service was almost embarrassingly wonderful.
OMG! What a treat for the taste buds. Sure wish I could come back here, but alas, we live in Southern California, so not likely. :-( -

A super classy place for dinner - but the times I've been there I've only ever been in the lounge for happy hour. Great drinks, great prices, and great service. Plenty of seating, and not overly crowded, not even at happy hour.
A great place to "pregame" while you wait for your table somewhere else, and near the waterfront to boot. -

You had me at valet parking...
Tristan's is a well-deserved, I'm worth every penny PLUS the chef's table treat! That's how my girls & I celebrated a 30th bday this past week.
Lauren - brown hair, beautiful smile - is a top-notch server. She knows everything! And a sommelier to boot! A few of us were confused with some menu terms. She patiently explained every aspect & detail, the way the item was prepared & served and offered menu options the table would like. She's well-informed on the wine/cocktail list & didn't hesitate to give recommendations nor make decisions when the option was given to her (as I ususally do - ie: I can't decided b/w A & B...based on what I'm eating, you make the call!).
We started with a glass of sparkling wine. Perfect way to start the meal & toast the Bday girl.
Apps:
Caprese Salad - a table hit. Heirloom Tomatoes, Basil, a la Minute Mozzarella. The mozz is made in house when the order is put in...yep, that's how fresh it is! Melts in your mouth & when put with the local heirloom tomatoes it's like heaven on a plate. Very pretty presentation.
Roasted and Raw Beets - another table favorite. Whipped Goat Cheese, Pistachio Pesto, Orange Supremes, Vincotto. Amazingly good. The combo of cooked & raw beets is one I've not seen on other menus. The whipped goat cheese was a lush presentation of this creamy, smooth cheese. Another beautiful presentation with the red beets, white cheese, & green pesto.
Field Greens - Sundried Cranberries, Spiced Pecans, Gorgonzola, White Balsamic Vinaigrette. Although I didn't try it, it was a very good sized appetizer salad. Enough for 1 to enjoy thoroughly.
She-Crab Raviolo - OMG!! Jonah Crab Meat, Sweet Onion Puree, Sherry & Celery Leaf Emulsion. She-crab sits on top of the raviolo as well. Mildly sweet and chewy.
Entrees:
Free Range Chicken - Morels, Sweetbreads, Corn Sformantino, Brown Chicken Crema. This was my dinner. Very good portion of chicken, small handful of morels, corn that was so good I wanted to lick it off the plate! My 1st time w/ sweetbreads - they were small fried balls that weren't that bad...they complemented the chicken & corn very well which surprised me. My leftover chicken was awesome in a sandwich the next day.
Artisanal Neapolitan Spaghetti - English Peas, Morel Mushrooms, Pickled Ramps, Thyme & Oregano. 3 out of us 6 got this & if (when) I got back to Tristan's it's what I'm getting too. If there is a house/staff/customer "fave" I think this would be at the top. Handmade spaghetti that takes at least 20 min to prepare as they make it from scratch. Neapolitan - a bit thicker than Americans are used to & with a slight nuttiness & chewiness that you won't find in other "American" & "processed" pastas. It was amazing...I stole 2 bites from my dinner companions plate (& I don't think she was too happy with me for it!). Every element was done to perfection & held its own in this dish. Made for good leftovers from what I hear as well.
The other 2 entrees were the Sangiovese-Braised Beef Short Rib (Free Form Lasagna, Caramelized Fennel, Smoked Sea Salt) & Muscovy Duck Breast (Foie Gras Polenta, Marcona Almonds, Morello Cherry-Balsamico) but I didn't see or taste them. The girls said they were good.
Dessert:
Bday girl got a White Russian which was served in a the standard cocktail glass w/ a candle melted to the side & lit so we could celebrate her bday! How cute & what a great last minute innovation! Obviously not the standard "bday cake" request.
Passion Fruit Pudding Cake - thai basil gelato, lemongrass ginger ale. Refereshing, gorgeous, not what you expect. The passion fruit pudding cake is very sweet...but when pared with the gelato it gets toned down nicely. The gelato/ginger ale's a bit hard to eat b/c it's served in a tall glass so you "dig" for the gelato w/ a long handled spoon while also wanting to "drink" it b/c it's in a glass. I never did figure out how to do this eloquently.
Sorbet Trio -prepared in house daily. Our 3 flavors were blood orange, almond & something else. Although good, I've had better. Next time I'll end with the cheese plate!
Executive Chef - Nate Whiting - came out to speak to us & thank us for coming in. You can tell his food means a lot to him & using it in ways that speak to its flavors & localness are paramount.
Pastry Chef - Amanee Neirouz - is a goddess with all things dessert. She has a talent that I could only wish to emulate. Her concoctions are pure, simple & also speak to the food's real flavors. Kudos!
6 of us, only 5 paying & we each roughly spent $80 on food & drink, not including tip. Not a bad deal. I always thought this place would be too expensive for my wallet, but it's not...it's completely affordable; they treat you like royalty - no surcharge for the "chef's table" which really was a great view into the "life of the restaurant". Go here for fine Charleston dining. -

This was the most we've ever spent on a single meal in our lives (we're only 26), but I'm glad it was at Tristan!
Pros:
1. We were able to get a last minute reservation on a Friday night.
2. Service was friendly, attentive, not stuffy.
3. My meal was TO DIE FOR.
4. Doesn't feel like a hotel restaurant.
5. Good location, very close to lots of fun things to do after dinner.
Thanks Tristan! -

I wish I were as impressed with Tristan as Fodor's seems to be. But then maybe that Fodor's review was written in 1987, because I can imagine yuppie types in heavily-shoulder-padded powersuits raving over lunch there. In fact, almost everything about Tristan is oddly reminiscent of Working Girl, right down to the neo-contemporary menu and mildly Asian-inspired dining room in black lacquer and geometric angles.
It didn't help that the restaurant was desperately empty when I visited. I sat alone near the open kitchen, but not quite near enough to feel like there was much going on. The server was helpful and quick...I suspect primarily because she was sitting on a stool somewhere just out of sight, watching me and waiting for a fork to drop.
I had relatively average food: a roasted beet salad I'm sure 19 other places in town offer some variation of, and a scallop dish, "prepared two ways", that featured greenish foam I've chosen to block from memory. None of it was innovative or even terribly tasty. All of it seemed overworked with a priority on plating arrangement and superfluous ingredients. I seem to recall that dessert was the best thing I tried, but it couldn't have been great, because I've honestly forgotten what it was. Chocolatey? Maybe?
Tristan (and Fodor's for that matter) could use a 21st century refresh. Even a snarky Wall Street II-inspired update would be a welcome breath of updated air for this pricey hotel dining room. -

I have eaten at Tristan's several times and never had a bad meal. The contemporary elegance is what one might term "New York Chic." Dining here is a production sure to impress with an introductory amuse bouche and a delightful sorbet served between appetizer and main course. Both are complimentary but only slightly larger than thimble sized and provide a refreshing sampling. For an appetizer, I had the Vildalia Onion soup which was an excellent creamy creation with a velvety texture, far different from the French Onion soup more frequently encountered. The Local Shrimp entree provided a refreshing citrus flavouring. The key lime pie for dessert was also excellent.

My husband and I strolled out to downtown Charleston for a glass of beer and maybe some dessert. We've never tried Tristan and thought we'd check out the ambiance and return for a meal some other time. As vegetarians, it's a little difficult at times to find an accommodating restaurant in the South. The waiter told us that the Chef would be more than happy to create a vegetarian course menu for us and we decided to give it a try. It was the best meal decision we've made since we arrived in Charleston three weeks ago. The presentation, wine pairing, and everything else that goes with good food was done to perfection. I would return at a heartbeat!

Review from Amy L.
I arrived at Tristan pretty much straight from a 12 hour epic travel disaster encompassing flooded public transportation, cancelled flights, lost luggage, and a madcap dash from Long Island to New Jersey to catch the only flight out of New York that would get me to Charleston in time to make my dinner reservation here. The meal I was served made me feel like all my efforts were worthwhile...consider this a 4.5 star review that just barely missed being rounded up to 5.
The staff was extremely helpful and attentive without hovering. Little touches (serving and clearing all plates at once, not showing the back of the hand while serving) were respected and well-executed. My one service complaint would be that our waiter didn't seem to know much about the wine list, but they eventually hooked us up with a bottle of viognier that sent my father into rhapsodies.
Food ranged from very good to exquisite. I think the highlight of the meal was my quail appetizer - pieces of breast and leg, cooked sous vide, and served with an onion carbonara. My mother had a bite that reversed a decades-long prejudice against quail. I loved the combination of scallops and brussel sprouts in my entree, and the mustard foam was the perfect touch. My parents both ordered the chicken, which was again perfectly cooked, but would have been improved by the inclusion of some dark meat to complement the breast, and maybe some more vegetables, as the dish overall was a bit on the bland side. I felt desserts were the weakest portion of the meal - my peach hush puppies were fine, but only the peach foam was transporting. My father's pot de creme was a touch too rich for my palate, but he pretty much licked the bowl clean.
Finally, I have to mention the restroom, which was one of the most elegant I've seen. The restaurant overall was well-designed and spacious, though maybe the lights could have been just the slightest touch lower?
Overall, my experience at Tristan was really outstanding, from the food to the atmosphere to the warm and welcoming staff to the little touches like the pear sorbet palate cleanser. -

Tristan's is elegant, intimate, and comfortable all in one. As mentioned in previous reviews, the food is presented in an artful way and they have a great wine selection. This is a great place to go for a top-quality meal with excellent service!

I went to Tristan for the first time last weekend and it was absolutely wonderful. We had the Chef's Tasting Menu which was 6 courses created by Chef Nate, some of which were on the regular menu and some that weren't. Incredible meal! The service was great and it was cool that the chef came out and talked to us during our meal. I liked being able to see what was happening in the kitchen also. Will definitely go back to Tristan again!!

My wife and I had been wanting to try Tristan for some time. The ambiance was obnoxious, but, overall, the food was lovely.
The sweetbreads were delicate and perfect, the steak was pleasant and the tartare was exquisite. The downsides were that the vinegar overwhelmed the spinach, and the caesar, though fine, was not on the same level as the rest of the meal. -

I experienced Tristan in three different ways over my sister's wedding weekend (sorry if that sounds dirty to you-- get your mind out of the gutter!).
1: My mom and I had lunch here upon our arrival to Charleston. It was a quick walk from our hotel and we needed a little time to decompress before all of the guests began to arrive. It seemed a little pretentious at first: we were brought Voss water when we asked for tap and the waiter's description of the food was a little over the top, but everything else was great. I had a steak sandwich that was phenomenal although the horseradish was a little strong for my liking. I also would have appreciated more salads on the lunch menu. They sent us some champagne on the house as they knew we were in town for the wedding (and were using them as our caterers) which was very appreciated. They offer a $15 prix fixe menu that looked like a really good deal for lunch, if I had been that hungry.
2: Tristan catered a welcome party that my parents threw at the French Quarter Inn. While I was too nervous to eat (I was giving my maid of honor toast that night), I will say that all of the waitstaff was incredibly friendly and the food looked amazing. Huge spreads of cheese and fruit were elegantly presented and a serious dent was made in the dessert tray. I felt especially bad for the bartenders stuck on the very humid patio, but they were always smiling and prepared my gin and tonics just like I needed them: strong.
3: Tristan also catered a casual breakfast that we had at the Andrew Pinckney Inn. Oh. my. god. The food was incredible. Scrambled eggs, sausage, fresh fruit. But the standouts were really the bacon and the grits. The bacon was coated in brown sugar. I know it sounds weird but it was just about the best thing I've ever had, and I'm not a huge bacon fan. The grits were done in the classic southern way: thick and full of butter. So very tasty. Again, the staff was all very pleasant and did a fantastic job.Listed in: Southern Eats, in the South., Chaaaaaaahhhelston.

Just an absolutely Fantastic Meal.
I dined at Tristan last weekend and it was fantastic. There is really not a lot to say other than that. The food, ambiance and service were all world class. Futhermore, the price was extremely resonable. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. -

Had new years eve dinner at Tristan this past year and it was fantastic. From the live Jazz, to the polite and extremely helpful waiter, an all around great experience.
It was a pre fix menu which included 3 courses. Honestly, while this is sad, I can't remember all the dishes that were served, but after each left the table empty, nearly licked clean, i would say they were all magnificent.
I would recommend this place, though it was quite expensive. A good place for a special occasion. -

It is true that menus at restaurants in Charleston show just a few vegetarian dishes. Tristan is not an exception. However, you can taste vegetarian food which is not on the menu. Just say 'I am a vegetarian/' and a kind and friendly waiter will introduce your options. Five or Seven courses with wine pairing are highly recommendable. Decoration, taste, freshness, harmony with wines, and smell. With every bite, you will watch different fireworks in your brain like Remy in Ratatoille the movie.

First off, Its been a couple years since I been here. But while I am sitting at my computer thinking of great restaurants that I have been to this one immediately comes to mind. As far as being pricey, you get what you pay for and you don't walk away hungry. I have paid much more for less. The atmosphere is great and doesn't feel stuffy. I can't say that I remember what I had exactly, but I do remember that it looked like I licked my plate clean. I do remember some type of green apple cotton candy that was amazing.

Review from Jamie M.
My day of clutziness continued here, luckily they dim the lights in here pretty significantly so no one could witness my mini disasters (I was extra careful with the wine tonight, but the butter dish hated me).
I ordered the rack of lamb, which came with swiss chard and quinoa risotto. I had never had quinoa risotto before and actually forgot that the menu said it was quinoa, so I was completely baffled about the texture of the risotto during the whole meal (I'm so easily confused, it's sad). I also had forgotten about the lemon curd from the menu, which tasted exactly like the lemon glaze I make to put on my poppyseed muffins. If that's not your thing they put it off to the side.
We split the bread pudding for dessert, which I wasn't sure I was going to like (bacon caramel, coffee ice cream? how can these things be good?). But it all worked really well together and was definitely the most interesting bread pudding I've ever had.
Service was attentive and friendly, although they did disappear for quite awhile before bringing us the check. I thought it was strange since we finished right around closing time, I figured they'd want to rush us out the door. Kudos for letting us linger over our wine. -

I don't understand the huff about this restaurant. My fiance and I were here for a long weekend and were really looking forward to this restaurant because of the high reviews. The food was just okay and the service was just too pretentious (give me a break and give me some space to eat!). The portions were very small. My entree was the fish of the day which was overcooked and lacking seasoning. My fiance had the salmon and although his was cooked to perfection, was also bland. The environment is rather blase w/no warmth for an upscale restaurant. It definitely was not an experience of Charleston to remember. We enjoyed the less expensive restaurants located on Market St. much more which had much tastier food and a livelier environment.

I've been going to Tristan Restaurant for several years now. The wait staff is exceptional, friendly and superbly educated in every menu item and wine. Tristan, I'd say, offers more than just an upscale meal, but a true dining experience.
Even when not looking for a full course, the small bar area in the back of the restaurant is a pleasant escape with great bartenders who will remember you (and your favorite drink) on your next visit.
Five stars, hands down. -

I've been coming to Tristan annually for about six years (under three different executive chefs) and have consistently enjoyed the experience. My family's most recent visit was no exception: the food was imaginative, the plates were attractive, and the waiting staff was very professional.
The restaurant is set in a very spacious room with an open kitchen on one side (the pastry chef actually works at a station outside the kitchen in the dining room). The tables (particularly the booths) feel very private and are well-spaced out: Tristan would definitely be a good place to go for a romantic evening. One of the things that is a bit over-the-top for me is the way in which the waiting staff runs. You're greeted by your "server's assistant" first and plates are not only delivered at the same time (which means, for larger parties, four or five servers might be delivering the meal), but they're also all cleared at once. It's all professionally done, of course, but something about the way it's executed at Tristan makes the experience feel a bit... pretentious?
Eating dinner at Tristan is quite the experience. After some delicious, house-made bread (I had sourdough), the amuse bouche arrived to the table. The peach curd with tiny pieces of chopped olive and volcano salt might have been the best mouthful I tasted: as with much of what the chef makes, the ingredients represented a bit of a weird pairing on paper, but they worked excellently together. The meal then progressed to the appetizers. My heirloom tomato salad was excellent: the tomatoes were nice and ripe and the mozzarella was freshly pulled, which was a real treat. My family members enjoyed their appetizers as well: the beet salad was beautiful on the plate, the savory profiterole was the best dressed-up pot pie I'd ever had, and the pork belly was enjoyed greatly.
In between the appetizers and entrees was a palette cleanser, which came with its own chilled spoon. The flavor of the night's sorbet was heirloom tomato, which was interesting, but pretty strange (as the palette cleansers often are... last year we sampled celery, which was absolutely terrible). For an entree, I had the chicken, which was almost perfect. The smoky potato puree was delicious and the chicken croquettes (made with dark meat) were wonderful with their North African-influenced taste. The one flaw was the skin on the chicken breast: though it looked crispy when it arrived, it was not. The market fish of the day (tilefish) was good enough, although not all that exciting, while the cucumber salmon was very much enjoyed. On the other hand, the scallops were a bit of a flop: the dish was attractive, however, the texture achieved on the scallop mousse dumplings was rather strange. For dessert, I tried the chocolate pot de creme which was absolutely delicious. It was topped with a little olive oil and sea salt, which worked quite well with it, and the tartness of the cherry sorbet and salad balanced out the sweet pot de creme nicely.
Overall, I would say that Tristan is a very interesting restaurant to experience. It's not somewhere I would want to go all that frequently, but it's certainly worth a visit. The chef does some very creative things with food, most of which works quite well. -

I had Sunday brunch at Tristan's, and it was fantastic. My dish was basically fried eggs, polenta, and an Italian cheese. I also got a dish of heirloom tomatoes in a balsamic reduction. Tasty! There were definitely some choices for vegetarians. My companions got steak burgers that looked yummy. The fries were delicious! Other dishes around the table were a pate eggs benedict and a crabcake dish. Great jazz on Sundays. Awesome service.

Not a very good brunch. The staff seemed to take a break in the middle of our meal. The portions were skimpy and worse some of them were tasteless. My mushroom quiche had the consistency of 60's military C-rations canned ham and eggs. But the bathroom is worth a visit.

So, this place is incredible. Simply put. I had the green tomato appetizer with mozzarella they literally had just made in house. I was asked if I wanted pepper on the tomatoes that was fine, medium, or coarse...no shiz, they asked me what pepper setting I wanted. I had the filet with succotash. Service was literally impecable. Between the appetizer and main course they gave us sorbet to cleanse our pallet. I was very impressed with Tristan. I went on a Tuesday night so it was not crowded so that may have increased the level of service and the quality of the food. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

I brought my parents here for NYE and am just about BLOWN away by how perfect the experience was. I had done extensive research into all the amazing places to offer to eat in this jewel of a city by the sea. They have a multi-course prix fixe and this evening was no exception to that, but even better, they did not raise the prices! Yes, for $75 we got 4 courses and as a special bonus on this last night of the year, they included a glass each of champagne and a lively 4 person band to entertain.
+ 1 Star - Maitre D - The young woman at the podium up front quickly and AUTHENTICALLY apologized that our table was not yet ready. She then carried our coats for us as she showed us to the comfortable bar. Her subtle, courteous attention continued during the eve as we waited the approximately 25 minutes for our seating to open up. We minded not, as we had fun in the bar chatting with other folks in the cozy space.
+ 1 Star - Decor. From the moment you enter, it is a special space. The decor may not be everyone's style, however it makes a statement that matches the unique one of the food. Cool pale colors and walls, the fabric surround that separates the dining area, cocoon-like, from the bar and entranceway, chrome accents are warmed by solid wood here and there. Smart layout in the bar area allows a max number of folks to schmooze and chill out.
+ 1 Star - Server. We had the stellar young lady Sarah as our waitress. I don't usually care much one way about servers, to tell you the truth. I want attention, I want food and drink explained and served, and I don't want an intrusive personality. So attentive, genuine and, honestly, caring the only word that fits, her literal nurturing of our needs was seamless with the overall experience of the evening. As an example, she went out of her way to bring me a bowl of fruit for dessert, after a meal of many special requests, with not only a smile on her face and leap in her step, but she had been the one to suggest it when I said how full I was but... that I still longed for a tiny sweetness. This is not service force-trained by Ritz Carlton standards, it is a genuine caring that comes from management's obvious valuing of their staff. Bravo to them all!
+ 1 Star - The Ridiculously Sublime Food. Wow, I have eaten well in my life. But this was stupid good. Without going into foodie detail about each and every course, I must wax about the seemingly simple: a twist on the typical caesar salad. Of course it was bits of romaine, but cut super small, and mixed with a few tiny morsels of raddiccio. Of course, the killer was the dressing. Oh gawd, what was in that dressing? It was like... crack! I couldn't stop eating eat and wanted more more more! Oh, and the next thing I had - the seared crab cake? How about crab heaven? Hardly any cake and 95% crab from obviously happy, virgin hula-dancing crabs... oh, the bliss. Yeah, let's not even get into the genius of the Butter-poached lobster entree or the crazy hay-smoked flounder. Divine. I am salivating just reliving it.
+ 1 Star - Dessert to die for. Frequently great food places have *meh* desserts. Nope, not at Tristan. Mum had the delight of the chocolate hazelnut charlotte with a wee cup of specail, spiced hot chocolate. My mom adores me and lets me steal off her plate all the time - but last night I almost lost a finger. It was worth fighting for, as was her partner's more staid cheese plate. Heaven.
- 1 Star - Parking. We walked, but if you drive, you will be sad as there is just no parking anywhere around there that is easy nor free. Oh well! Walk it off, fatty!
- 1 Star - Bathroom. I hardly can count this, as it was for sure not their fault, but one of the ladies potties was broken when we were there. So only one working loo for the gals! Argh! All in all, the restroom layout is a little ugly. I know it is meant to be stylish, and I like my high style, but they just rocked some sort of outer-space kind of them in the toliets that didn't work for me. I won't hold it against them. I love them in too many other ways. Sigh....
+ 1 Star - Value. Of course you won't go drop $75 at every meal (they also have a less expensive 3 course meal available on other nights). But if you are gonna drop the coin, you want the juice to be worth the squeeze, right? This was above and beyond what I have had at many other dining establishments, from LA to NY and inbetween.
The only thing that delays my return to Tristan is that I don't live in Charleston. Otherwise, it would be on my "return ASAP" list. -

We had a great meal with unique choices. The service was excellent. They also provide free valet parking, which is good since parking in the area is almost impossible. It has a modern decor. The noise level is fairly high but we could hear each other talk. If in Charleston, SC I recommend Tristan for a good meal and an enjoyable experience. The cost, as for most very good restaurants, is on the high side.

We went here for Sunday brunch and while everything was good, it just didn't live up to the hype we read all over the web. You pay t dollar for mediocre food.

I went down to Charleston over Valentine's Day weekend and made a reservation at Tristan. The atmosphere is really beautiful - there were colored tea lights and curtains, and every table had brightly colored fresh flowers in a small vase. Even the bathrooms were amazing. The sinks had these faucets that made the water come out like a waterfall.
Okay. Now on to the food.
One word: amazing.
They have their own bread people, and he came over with two options. We, of course, asked for both. For my appetizer, I got butternut squash soup. The waitress (Julie - awesome, by the way) came out with a bowl with just a dollop of cream and candied nuts. She then poured the soup in the bowl out of a silver ladle. My eyes crossed at the first taste - I have never had anything, to date, as delicious as that soup. My boyfriend got the crabcakes for his appetizer (but he kept eyeing my soup after he tried it - it's like a drug I tell you). My main dish was chicken (with a sweet tea glaze, OMG), pureed potatoes, and cabbage. My boyfriend got the duck and there was this apple-esque side and veggies. Because we didn't want to stop eating, we ordered dessert - he got the tiramisu, and I got this flan-like-fruit-slice-of-heaven. Oh! And they also gave us this small sample of effervescent grape/strawberry dessert. They ALSO had a peppered lemon sherbert deal for palate-cleansing.
Eating at Tristan was one of my top restaurant experiences. It was 5-star all the way (in class and Yelp rating) and I will remember it fondly when I dream of the butternut squash soup. -

I'm not sure why, but I'm feeling guilty writing this review knowing I'm not giving it 5 stars. Allow me to explain. This place dots all their I's and crosses all their T's. Everything from the amuse bouche to the palette cleanser of tomato vodka sorbet was done exquisitely, and with panache. In no particular order, we ordered a couple glasses of wine, the shrimp cocktail, cesear salad, marinated heirloom tomatoes, she crab soup, the short ribs, and the cucumber salmon. Everything I listed here was great and I have no reason to fault anything. But my problem with Tristan is that despite all the rave reviews you will read here, I think it is IMPERATIVE to note that this is an extremely formal restaurant. So formal, that we were actually turned off. Like the waiters (and all their processes) made us uncomfortable. And don't get me wrong, my husband and I very much enjoy eating out at nice places and trying new restaurants, but to say this place is reserved for a "nice occasion" is a severe understatement. I can't quite imagine how formal an event would have to be to warrant coming here....MAYBE a wedding reception? I understand Tristan has won all kinds of awards and such but I think the majority of people voting and eating here are an older clientele who still sit up straight with shoulders back whilst whispering pleasantries across the table to one another and CLEARLY appreciate a more formal dining experience. These days, I think the type of stuffy formalities that occur at Tristan has gone the way of the dodo bird (thanks for the reference, Leona!). I would have no problem going somewhere with a cool, semi-casual vibe (like a gastropub or Cypress, as a random example) where you can sit back in your booth or leather chair, still paying the same prices and eating top notched food, mind you, but not feeling so damned stuffy and formal. For $200, and a somewhat unmemorable dining experience, I wish we had gone down the street to Blossom Cafe or S.N.O.B., gotten our eat on, bought a nice bottle of wine, and laughed to our hearts content in a less formal environment. I really can't imagine recommending Tristan for any sort of occasion, except perhaps a Presidential luncheon. Again, without slighting the food or service, Tristan is a perfect example of how the atmosphere of a restaurant can completely alter your dining experience and leave you with a stiff back and an empty wallet.

Went there for lunch. Good food and nice decor. Will definitely go back to try their Foie Gras Burger sometimes.

We started out with crab cakes (and a glass of scotch, pretty standard scotch list) which weren't my favorite crab cakes, but certainly good. An amuse-bouche of some sort of chicken mousse was offered which was nothing if not interesting. We both had the rack of lamb, which was abosolutely fantastic. We had a bottle of the '97 Domaine Pierre Damoy Chapelle-Chambertin which was an excellent pair. I was impressed with the wine list, which was priced as expected for a restaurant wine list, particularly the Bordeaux's (its just too bad we were both so set on the lamb). We shared the bread pudding, which had bacon in the caramel sauce which gave it an amazing smoky flavor. I would have never considered bacon in a dessert, but it was great. With dessert we also had a 1973 Chateau Caillou Sauternes which had turned out to be one of my gf's favorites. We didn't ever actually interact with the Sommelier, however, I spoke with him on the phone afterwards because I couldn't remember the Sauternes and couldn't find it on the wine list, he was very helpful and friendly. The service was great; we finished our dinner at closing time and I couldn't even get the waiters attention to get the check, it was almost akward as we felt bad for being there for so long. Worth an extra star there, just for letting us linger over a fabulous Sauternes after 10pm on a Monday evening.
