It's been a few months so I decided to refresh my haircolor and walking in, everyone I had interacted with the last time, greeted me warmly and treated me more like a friend then a client.

Willingness to hand over $100 just to dye my hair (that I used to do at home for $20) says a lot. Kenneth is THAT good, and I love our girl talk. He remembered all of the stuff I rambled about last time (like my theory on being Doomed in the dating scene, and how quickly that changed). We bonded over crazy roommates, chitchatted about boys, events and music shows. It was nice.

Plus, two and a half hours of kicking back and being taken care of is quite nice. I will keep on strongly recommending this place.

For the past year, I've been going to another salon on Charles Street. I'm very fond of that place because it's close to my apartment and I've always received great service. However, I wanted to try something new and after reading many of the reviews on Yelp, I decided to try Trephin.

I am SO glad I did!

Trephin is pretty easy to get to and the salon has a great atmosphere. I had an appointment at 8 PM on Friday, so it was the end of the night, but everyone was still attentive. For $65, I had a great wash and trim. The girl who washed my hair, Jen, was wonderful. The scalp massage was unexpected, but so, so welcome.

Sean cut my hair and did everything perfectly! I went in wanting only a trim with some added layers to give my hair more shape and volume. He cut off just the right amount and gave me so many layers that my hair looks amazing! I also appreciated how he handled everything. I'm never chatty when I get my hair done because I'd rather soak up the experience and relax than chatter on about nothing. He totally took this in stride and we had pleasant chit chat, but for the most part, he let me alone while he did his thing. It was such a pleasant experience.

I had gone to Trephin as a test run to see if I liked it enough to get some color done. While it is a bit expensive for color, I'm definitely calling them up ASAP to schedule an appointment for highlights. I'm hoping that my second appointment will be just as amazing as my first.

I am an international student who has been in Boston for almost 10 months and during that time I have only had two haircuts (one at trephin) and in between those two occasions been coloring my hair myself at home.
A couple weeks ago I had had enough of my damaged hair and felt desperate to do something about it. Since you don't have any money to talk about as a student, I started looking for places where I could be a hair model and Trephin had great reviews. I called them and they were sooo nice and I got an appointment just a couple days away.

Nina who dyed my hair was super nice and did a great job making my hair look good again after way to many 'do-it-yourself- sessions' in my bathroom.

Trish did a great job cutting my hair. It was so damaged and she made it look amazing again!

Best of all, they do not treat you differently because you are a hair model, they still want you to be satisfied with the result and wouldn't do anything without your agreement. I have already told all of my friends about them and now I'm writing a review here.

    Thank you guys!

What I love about this place is consistency. I go to Sean every 2-3 months for a healthy trim and I always come out satisfied. I like very low maintenance cuts, as I hardly ever even blow dry my hair, let alone style. Sean definitely listens and gets exactly what I want even though it might be the most boring cut to do all day haha. I also love Moe for coloring-- she fixed my brassy highlights that had been growing out for several months and basically returned my hair color to its original Asian-black. It looks so natural and not at all artificially colored that I can comfortably let my roots grow until it's all just my natural hair again.

Sean cut my hair last night.  I normally wait a few days, or even a few haircuts before I write a hairdresser review because it always takes me a few days to decide how to style a new cut and if I like it, and if I don't like it, I usually go back anyway for another shot . . . Well, this morning I washed and blow dried my hair it looked amah-zing without any effort or product.
Sean was sweet and relaxing, he wasn't overly chatty and seemed to really concentrate on what he was doing.  I did have to wait a while because he was running late, but I was informed of this upon my arrival, three different employees asked me if I wanted a drink, and as many apologized for having to wait.
Jen washed my hair and was also very sweet and kind, and excellent at head massages.
I think I found my salon and hairdresser after living in the area for almost 4 years . . . woohoo.

I came to Trephin after a disastrous-DISTASTROUS!!!!-cut from a Newbury salon. When I sat down, I told Nate my situation and he looked at my hair and was completely confused by the way the other stylist (with high Yelp ratings) had cut it. Thank you!!  I felt like finally I'm in the hands of someone who knows what he's doing, whereas the other stylist didn't see the problem at all.

I told him what I didn't want, and given what he had to work with (I can't overstate the horror show that was my haircut), what I ended up with was nothing short of a miracle.

"Everybody needs a good bang," he said, with scissors in front of my face. At that point, who was I to argue?

Shear brilliance. Nate was right-- I *did* need a good bang. A good, blunt bang. To frame my face, that is. And that is what I got! After several years of the same hair dresser, I decided to get my locks chopped somewhere new and exciting (and highly recommended by a friend), so off to Trephin I went.

I didn't want anything crazy. I really only wanted a trim, and that's exactly what I got. I've been trying to grow my hair out for years and some stylists insist on getting all philosophical with my follicular situation, but Nate happily got down to business, eliminating me of the fuzzy ends that had been plaguing me during conference calls (really, is there any better time to examine your split ends than on a conf call?I think not).

The salon itself is lovely. You may not want to leave. The decor has a very zen-like feel to it, but resist the urge to get into downward facing dog in the middle of a haircut; that's just awkward. Instead, enjoy the music, the clean smells in the air (it does not smell like chemicals in there at all. they must use magic instead of chemicals!), and the SCALP MASSAGE during your wash.

    Oh my.
    Oh my.
    Oh my.

    Oh. My.

Need I say more about the scalp massage?

My only gripe about Trephin is that they have a very limited selection of product available and my hair does not tend to want to behave like most people's hair and when I left from my cut, my hair was sticky and funky, reducing the amount of fun time between a professional blow-out to my wonky 6am blow-out that is completely unremarkable.

I write this review as I almost became a modern art project tonight. I thought about calling it "impatient woman with scissors cuts her own bangs with angst" but then I thought of Nate shaking his head and put a reminder on my calendar to schedule a trim instead.

I had my first appointment at Trephin last Friday and it was great. The woman I spoke with on the phone to schedule the appointment was very nice, especially considering I was calling without much notice. She even explained in helpful detail how to find the place since it is a little difficult to find...but not THAT difficult, so don't worry. When I walked in, there were a couple of people (who I assume both work there), chatting in the waiting area and they were very friendly and got me checked in for my appointment right away.

My appointment was with Sean and I was really quite nervous because I wanted a short haircut after having pretty long hair for the last 25 years of my life (i.e., my whole life). He was relaxed about it and confident that the short style would work for me. He didn't offer too many opinions, but when I asked him what he thought, he did tell me his opinion on the length. And he did a great job with the cut. I definitely felt like he wanted the cut to be awesome and he spent some time grooming the edges of the cut and making sure all the pieces were falling how he wanted them to fall.

I've gotten a million compliments and even more importantly, I am super happy with my new cut - I love it. And that is a big deal because I totally expected to walk out of the appointment sobbing so hard I couldn't find the T after losing my long hair. But Sean was awesome. I hope to become a regular.

I'm another person who moves around a lot, and I'm admittedly a huge pain in the ass about my hair. It needs to have edge, but not look like I tried too hard. I don't even own a brush. Each city I've lived in I've taken a while to find a soul mate salon.

When I moved to Boston I was especially worried about finding my match b/c I'm not a huge fan of Boston style in general. But I read about Trephin, decided to take a chance and am superrrr stoked I did.

I go to Brian for cuts and Kenneth for color and they are a power duo. Highly recommended. Just don't get in the way of my appointments pretty please.

I desperately needed a haircut. My hair was growing out and it has lost all shape. I had side bangs, weird layers, and icky ends...so I went on Yelp and found the most convenient and best rated salon in the downtown area. And here I am..

Before that, I tried to book another appointment at an up and coming salon, but they said they're booked until October. WHAT? You serious?! That was too ridiculous for me and inconvenient. How could you possibly ask someone to wait that long? I ditched that and was able to book an appointment at Trephin in the afternoon after calling in the morning.

Later that day, I had trouble trying to find the building Trephin was in. I felt like it was some secret society hidden on Temple Place. At one point, I was misinformed and kept beeping the buzzer at the wrong buliding. Embarassing. Once I found the right building and got in (by a lovely couple who opened the door, thanks!), I went to the second floor and saw a sign with a fancy T on it. I feel like an elite member already. I walk in and wow, everything is clean cut and the room is a beautiful dusty purple color. It's a soothing atmosphere and I was greeted by nicely by the receptionist (along with some iced tea).

I had an appointment with Nate, who sat me down and asked what I wanted. i was open to anything but I wanted to keep my long hair but trim it up a bit and fix up some ends. I also asked what he thought I should do if I were to get a short cut. He dismissed the bob and shoulder length and suggested that if I want shorter, I would have to go short, not mid-length. However, I feel like he could have been more helpful in finding me the best cut for my face. I felt like I was trying to suggest the ideas rather than the other way around. The wash process was just ok, nothing spectacular. The girl just washed my hair and that was it. It's usually my favorite part in getting a haircut because it's so relaxing and this is where Trephin lost points with me.

The haircut process was quick and my hair turned out a little shorter, with even layers, and a middle hairline. It was a little different since I haven't had a middle line for 5 years or so. He said that that was where my hair naturally fell, and that because I tried to side part it, my bangs would always fall over my eyes. Hm, interesting. When he blow dried, my scalp was screaming for help a bit. Hot stuff.

Overall, the experience was good but not great. The service is exceptional but my overall satisfaction with my wash and cut was lacking. I do have very specific taste but I was very open to new suggestions and I felt like I wasn't offered enough options. I wanted kickass hair but I just came out with "I could work with that". I think the ambience and setting of the salon does make up for some of its cons for today, but I wasn't wowed to the point that I would come back.

I had my hair cut by Nate and color by Moe. I wasn't wild about the initial color but Moe was more than happy to make it darker and was very accommodating about this; she even included a blowdry. My haircut by Nate was good, not great. He recommended that I grow out some layers and he would style it more the next visit. I also asked for a slight bang and that didn't really happen. Overall, a really nice salon with fun staff, but for the price, I will probably try someplace else.

My friend recommended Brian and since she always has the best taste I decided to schedule an appointment with him. It didn't hurt that he also won best cut in Boston this year.

The service is absolutely exceptional. friendly, attentive, prompt. I started my cut right at 10 and left at 11 on the dot.

I like the atmosphere a lot too. the hipsters always have such unique taste - open, airy, and really funky. I feel like if you wanted to get a job there you need at least 10 tattoos.

Brian was great. He really listened to what I said and I'm very happy with my cut. His blow out was so amazing, my only complaint is that I feel like it's impossible for me to do at home!

All in all, I will be back. it's a bit pricey.. but I'm willing to try again. I might go to someone who isn't 90 bucks, because I feel like all the stylists are very talented.

Note to commuters... no parking, so beware.

I've always been the type of girl who can never settle down with just one colorist or stylist but  my philandering ways have changed since I've met Kenneth Fielding and Nate Prescott.  Both were employed at Shag prior to Trephin and once they moved, I followed.   I followed because the two are very professional and passionate when it comes to their skill...I have to attribute a percentage of my good looks to them.

On another note, Trephin is nothing I had anticipated.  Once you walk in the door you know that you're going to walk out looking kick ass.  I like the intimate vibe of this place.  For the first time, I was able to have   a conversation without yelling over loud obnoxious club music during my cut and color.  Everyone in this place exudes a honest and genuine vibe.

Not only are the people great, the decor is one of a kind.  Clean lines, warm, inviting and very soothing.  This place is meant to bring an immediate state of relaxation once you walk through the door and I would agree, it does just that.

I don't write many reviews but, I had to write one for this place.

Also I got my hair cut by Nate some time back and he really took his time with my unruly curly hair and it still looks great, even though it's been about two months now. Great salon!

I recently got a hair cut there on Saturday afternoon. Moe was able to cut my hair as the other scheduled stylist had to attend a personal matter. It was very nice of them to keep my appointment even though I would have completely understood if they needed to reschedule! :)

I get my hair cut twice a year. I have (actually now HAD) long thick straight hair and I opted for bangs and shoulder length hair. I told Moe I once had bangs but they looked really "piece-y" and she completely understood where I was coming from which was very comforting. The cut came out great, she showed me exactly how to blow dry my hair and how to style my bangs. She was really friendly and out-going and I really enjoyed being there. Even the shampoo was great. No water in my ears and in general, everyone takes great pride in attention to detail there which I respect a lot!

I am definitely going to stick to this place for a hair cut and I'm considering trying the Single process w/ Balayage coloring sometime down the line.

The money you spend there is well worth it.

I feel like I need to apologize to Mo and Brian for waiting so long to write my glowing review. Sorry Mo and Brian!

Of course I love Trephin. I've been a client of Mo and Brian's for years (I think about 6 now!) and they did a fantastic job with the salon. The decor is understated but elegant with a relaxing atmosphere. Mo always gets me a glass of wine (she knows me well) while coloring my hair. The color is perfect every time too!

Brian does a phenomenal job with my cuts and styling. He always knows what I want even if I can't articulate it, haha.

I've been seeing Brian for years now -- and so happy that he is in his own, creative space.  I have, what I would consider, hard-to-style hair.  And, although, I'm one of those people who says "do what's best, I don't care" -- the first half of that sentence ("do what's best) is truthful; the second half ("I don't care") is pretty much a lie.

Some say pricey, I say, you get what you pay for.  $90 for a full hour is totally reasonable.  And, just when I think I need to get my hair cut, it always seems to morph and grow into another wonderful shape.  Literally, I'll be getting compliments on a Trephin cut three months after.

Oh, and just recently, they had yummy iced tea.

I feel like I've been following my stylist Sean all over this damn city! I first saw him at Shag in south Boston when i lived there, but he left so I followed him all the way to Cambridge to Aveda. Now I've followed him to Trephin. oh what a girl will do for a good hairdresser!

But I'm not complaining at all. I love Sean and his haircuts and I would probably follow him to the other side of the country if I had to, (well...maybe not) but I really hope this is the last move he makes for a long time.

Trephin is an absolutely gorgeous salon with custom furniture, beautiful details, and all sorts of fun oddities and knickknacks to look at (the staff is pretty nice to look at too!) but nothing about it is over done or garish. it's perfect. the products all smell like heaven, it's relaxing even when it's busy, the music is superb, the experience is personal and comfortable and my bearded buddy (Sean) seems more at home than he ever was before.

Trephin also has the first shampoo sinks that don't feel like they've put your neck into some sort of torture device, and above the sinks, a beautiful sky light to look up at while getting washed.

    I love this place!

PS. Congrats to the Trephin team for winning an award for best hair color in boston!

As someone who is very picky about her hair, I have 3 words to say: Check out Trephin.

Also, see Nate. I got one of the best cuts I've ever had... probably THE best. He  listened to what I was looking for and I got just that, along with some of his own touches which he discussed with me before cutting (unlike some stylists I've seen.) He took his time and left my length but freshened things up with some "face framing pieces." After a great blow-out I left 100% satisfied and I'm happy to say that this salon is well worth my trip into the city from the south shore!

Never in my life did I think I would become that girl. You know, the crazy weirdo, the one who wants to follow her hair stylist to the depths of hell - because even down there, you know you'd still be sporting some sexy singed hair.

As it turns out, I am not impervious to conniptions over the sudden disappearance of the one man who I enjoy and fully trust in cutting my unwieldy locks. I devoted what seemed like hours to Google searches in attempts to locate Brian so I might feel fabulous once again. My heart-pounding anxiety was subdued when I made an appointment at Trephin; it only disappeared once I sat in the chair and had official confirmation I was back in safe scissor range.

The new salon at Trephin is comfortable with gorgeous molding accents, simple decor, and a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. Though I can't speak personally to the other hair stylists there, the fact that the hair washing is so thorough and detail oriented is reason enough to make an appointment. My inclination is to strongly recommend my boy Brian to any curl-rockin ladies, but I'm not sure I am selfless enough to encourage other girls to getting an amazing haircut only to become even hotter.

Moral of the story: If you have curly hair, and want to be ugly, don't go see Brian.

When it comes to hair, makeup and overall salon service I seek out the best and I'm willing to pay for it. Especially on a Sunday.

After Tweeting my own "Sunday Style Challenge," and calling more than three salons, I was still unable to find a stylist willing to do my hair for an important Sunday event. Then I called Trephin based on a tip from my cousin (who always has a great cut!). Lucky for me, they were happy to accommodate my request.

Generally closed on Sunday, owner Brian Rand agreed to have me in based on the conversation I had with their receptionist. He couldn't believe that I was having such a tough time finding someone to work with and took the opportunity to really showcase Trephin's stellar approach to customer service with a potential new client.

My main direction: more runway/editorial than prom and the style had to look soft, but STAY.

In the next two hours I learned that Brian and I were in NYC at the same time in overlapping industries. As we chatted, I learned of his interest in art, design and architecture. This definitely influences how he does hair, and the results are stunning and completely photo-shoot ready.

With Trephin, Brian and his partner Moe (who specializes in color) have built a sleek, sexy, open space. Airy, yet intimate with a look, feel and service approach uniquely it's own. Trephin completely goes against the typical nature and "turn-and-burn" mentality of many well known Manhattan salons I've visited.

Pricing is equivalent if not less than other Boston salons. I was given a price range on my up-do before I even came in. While it was at the top of the range, it was well worth it. The job was not rushed and I was beyond pleased with the result.

Located in the Downtown Crossing area, parking can be tough, so if you can take the T in (Park Street is closest), I'd say that's the best way to go. I paid $14 in a lot about two blocks away. If you park in the Hyatt hotel lot, Trephin can validate for you.

Lastly, here's a tip about tipping: If any salon is willing to take you during off hours, tip generously. VERY generously. As in more than 20%.

Excellent service, style and pricing. Trephin on a Sunday for the WIN!

I had a really awesome experience last night - Kenneth did my color (calling all blondes!) and Sean K did the cut. Both were excellent. It's by far the most thoughtful color I've ever gotten. In the super chic hipster lighting I couldn't really appreciate just how lovely the color was until this morning in the natural light. He pulled my natural color out and added really beautiful touches like when I brush my hair out of my face there's a super bright ashy blonde at my hairline that I love. Sean K did great job cleaning up my cut and I'm still enjoying the blowout :)

I can't even describe how much I am LOVING the haircut Nate blessed me with last night.  I feel like I finally have the hair that I have been wanting for years!!  Nate's all-scissoring technique totally has me hooked...probably forever.

I used to go to Shag, and am really glad that I discovered Trephin.  All of the salon, with none of the attitude.  Everyone there is so incredibly friendly.

I've also seen Moe for color, which was fantastic, but unfortunately, I just don't have the funds to keep up blond highlights on black hair ;)

I can't wait for my next haircut!

I just tried this place for the first time. I saw Nate - who looks a little scary on the photos on the salon web site (with all the body art going on), but who, in person, is adorable and sweet, and, more importantly, gives an excellent hair cut. I walked in feeling kind of frumpy. I left feeling kind of sexy. That's what it's all about.

i am so excited that Brian has departed from Shag and forged his own path.  Trephin is conveniently located and is beautiful!  It has the affect of making you feel sexy and stylish without all of the intimidating attitude.

They have assembled an amazingly talented team here.  Everyone is so nice and they just do great work.  I can't wait to go back.

sean kay is the man! i've been seeing him for hair cuts for about 4 years and have followed him from shag, pyara and now to trephin! he actually listens to me and does exactly what i ask for! and i'm very very picky about my hair. it's definatly more on the higher end for prices, but you get what you pay for. i'd rather pay $60 and go home  and feel awesome then pay $40 and not love what i have to look at every single day in the mirror!

trephin is beautiful! its very clean, professional and relaxing!

Got a really nice cut by Trish, an apprentice at the salon.  She was super cool, listened to what I wanted (went from long hair to a shoulder length), and made the whole experience wonderful.  Awesome shampoo, did a good job on the cut, and nice chat.  PLUS good music during the haircut (thank you!).

This salon is hip in an understated way - sophisticated and fresh.  Brian Rand and Mo Smith have outdone themselves, bringing Boston a new kind of salon.

Brian has been cutting my hair for years and I wouldn't trust my thick hair to anyone else.  His cuts are always perfect - he knows what I want with minimal instruction.  What more could a girl ask for in her stylist?!

Talk-of-the-town assistant, Blake, had me near tears (in a good way!) with his amazingly strong hands - this shampoo and head massage are worth the cost of the cut alone.  Great find, Brian!

If you are looking for an update to your look or are just tired of the trendy Newbury salons, trephin is the place for you!

I have been seeing Nate for over a year and have walked away smiling from every single appointment. Last week, though, Nate really outdid himself.

I have been straightening my curly hair ever since I was 14 years old and my mother showed me how to "flat iron" my hair with a clothing iron. After twenty years or fighting my natural hair, Nate gave me a cut that has changed my mind forever about my need for pin straight locks. My nautral waves look great every day and I am saving hours a week by not blowdrying.

    Thanks a million Nate!

so having lived on this planet for almost 32 years, i thought that i had a pretty good idea of what a "good haircut" was.

    and then i met Nate.

Nate was recommended by a friend of mine...who just became a better friend.  from the moment i sat in Nate's chair i knew that he just "got it". he worked quickly, made great conversation, and before i knew it i left the salon with the best haircut i've ever had.  he listened to everything that i asked for and delivered it.

the salon has a unique energy.... professional, relaxed, and friendly...without any sort of pretense.

    i'm smitten.

The owners haircut was $70.00 at Shag and here it is $90.00.  Does that mean you don't have to tip him because he is the owner or o you still tip?

Shag quality without the attitude, as another reviewer says below. I followed Brian from Shag, and he is thriving in his new space. Great location, great music, great vibe all-around.

My hair is the most important accessory, asset, and mood uplifter to me.  So when my hair isn't at it's best, it's safe to say I'm pretty unhappy and a also little nerve wrecked about finding a good salon to trust my hair with.  Did I mention I also love complicated procedures?

Finally, after years of  "It's good, sort of what I was going for..."  Trephin gave me everything I asked for!  I walked in with brown hair with chunky blonde pieces that had grown out 2 inches, my hair was a hot mess since the cut had grown out (and wasn't even right for my wavy hair that I like to blow out to begin with).  When I walked out, I came away with a beautiful black/brown base, beautiful fuschia highlights (edgy, not too punky), and a great bob cut.  It's like I have a new lease on life!

Kenneth is the most careful and precise colorist I've ever had.  He will pick up tiny strands of hair one by one to get your highlights to blend just the way you want them to.  And he'll tediously mix your color to get exactly the tone you're looking for.  He's also great to chat with!  :)  I love Kenneth, will be booking with him always now.

And Nate did such a great job with my haircut.  Since my hair is wavy and I like an edgy bob, the layers can't be too short or else the shape completely falls apart.  Seems like a simple concept, but I couldn't get any other stylists to listen to this in the past, even at high end salons.  He got what I meant right away, and my hair hasn't been this easy to style in years.  Will definitely be seeing Nate again as well.

I highly recommend Trephin to anybody.  I was never second guessed, or had a stylist think they knew what was "better" for me, or talked out of anything - even for a big change like arriving brown with blonde to black/brown with vivid fuschia and a totally different cut.  I love them for their professionalism, their honest love of doing good hair, and lack of pretentiousness.  My dream of loving everything about my hair after a salon visit (regardless of how complicated what I wanted done was) has finally been achieved!

Nate is rad. He gets my cowlick. He makes my cowlick do cute things. In addition to my cowlick my hair is an annoying combo of curly, wavy and straight. Lame. Currently Nate and I are working on an updated sort of greaser/wolfman (for a lady) look that I am digging. Oh and Nate gave me the best under $3 product recommendation ever. Seriously that level of honesty and not pushing the salon stuff is worth something.

Trephin is a nice space. Although I admit I wish they had a sign on the elevator cuz I got totally lost trying to figure out what floor they are on. (2nd if you're interested)
