Review from Kali R.
Calgary, AB
First and foremost, I adore Dr. Torrance's no-bullshit attitude. Yes, it's chaotic and yes, the office is old, but I go for the accurate diagnostics and great prices. I've had 2 female cats spayed and my dog neutered. I used this vet clinic when I euthanized my elderly dog and was met with complete professionalism. When my current dog got neutered, they gave me a small amount of bitter cream to put on his stitches so he wouldn't lick. Didn't charge me a cent. I also got a check-up on my dog when we were involved in a car roll-over accident. I explained all of the things I've checked, etc and Torrance confirmed he was in good health. He didn't even charge me for most things he checked (I think I paid a $30 fee and that's it). The staff are busy but have never been rude and a little courtesy will get you a long way! I would assume other people are panicked and rude with them - remember that they work in a stressful environment!
This is a great vet for those who need good advice and trust in Dr. Torrance's expertise and intention to keep your animal healthy. I'll guarantee that you won't get a pretty waiting room, long meaningful conversations... or padded prices. You'll get the bare facts. I also like that they aren't pushy about name-brand "science" foods, they will accept differing beliefs on vaccinations and they use (gasp) common sense!
My animals were never treated poorly, I've never been treated poorly and I always get everything I need from Dr. Torrance. This is a great vet if you are a straight-forward person and aren't opposed to the vet taking control of your pet, but I admit it might be too much (or perceived as "not enough") if you have complex or more high-maintenance issues. Not for those who are easily offended!
I will always trust and use this vet hospital, but maybe it's not for everyone! -
Review from Cat S.

We took our cat in to get a cyst removed off her head and a teeth cleaning/exam. This was done under general anesthetic. I thought Dr. Torrance and his staff did a great job. I felt my pet was well cared for and I was treated well too, as I tend to ask alot of questions. My cat had multiple staples in her head and had to wear a cone for a week. The incision and staples were clean and healthy. I really had no concerns at all and was very happy with how it all went. We had to go back one week later for the staple removal and no problems at all. Dr. Torrance is a very kind vet and I would recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Torrance probably isn't going to tell you how cute your pet is or ask you how your day's going.… Read more »

Review from Jane B.

I was recommended to this vet by a friend after I had a terrible experience at Westmount Vet Clinic (see my reviews). She told me that this vet had lower costs because he didn't believe in ripping people off...But she warned me that his bedside manner wasn't the best but to ignore it because he was good.
At this time I was really upset at the other vet about wasting money on a mis-diagnoses. So I decided I would go to this vet the next time one of cats needed something. The first time I tried they were so busy I couldn't get an appointment soon enough. The next time one of my other cats was losing weight quickly and I knew she was going to need lots of tests. So I figured this was a good time to go to this vet. Now I give them 5 stars on prices, as it is true their prices were much better ( I saved about $100 on blood testing). But for me that is where the 5 stars ended.
Why I give then 2 stars:
* They never return phone calls. I once was put on hold for 27 minutes! And all I had to ask them was can you please fax my cats records to another vet.
* Bad at keeping records
They lost the blood work results/entire file of my cat (who was dying). I called them numerous times for these records and they kept promising to forward it, never telling me it was lost. I only finally found this out when I went to another vet and they called them for the results. All of this happened when I was needing the results to make a life or death decision about my cat.
* Their office was in terrible condition!
It was falling apart and they had posters up that must have been from the 80's and were ripped and torn...
* The vets bed side manner, will it sucks.
And he took no time at all to comfort my cat or make sure the she was ok with him before starting the exam.
* Did not do a thorough exam. (to me a cat should be weighed and have it's ears, eyes and mouth looked at in every visit. This is how you catch problems and keep lifetime records) He did none of these things at all!
* Bad at keeping appointments
I had a set appointment time, apparently that time was set for 5 other people too. I ended up waiting nearly an hour after I arrived before seeing the vet. This is after my fiance took my cat to the vet the night before for her set appt, which they lost all record of, and let my fiance sit in the waiting room for 45 mins before he asked what was happening and then they told him they wouldn't be able to see him and schedule him for the next morning. (funny thing I showed up that morning and they had no record of the appt again!)
* Staff is rude and inattentive
To be honest I would give them 1 star if it wasn't for the fact that they diagnosed my cat right and their prices are low. If you have time to deal with these people & mistakes then go ahead and take your pet there but I just don't think I can recommend it. (However I should note that he seemed better with dogs)
UPDATE: After being contacted by a yelp user Heather M, who decided it was helpful to tell me that this vet should "kick me out on my ass" for the review I posted I have decided to clarify some things.
First & foremost it is my right to post my experiences as they happened!
1) I don't need anyone to sugarcoat medical news about my cats. But I sure expect that my pet is treated respectfully and tenderly during their visit. I mean no one would be ok if their doctor threw them on the bed and start man handling you with no communication or introduction first so why is ok for an animal?
2) Having an old & dirty office is a problem! Because if they can't keep their office clean & update to date what does that say for the knowledge of the vet on modern approaches to vet care. Also when a "medical" office is unsanitary that allows infections to happen!
I don't need ads for pet food etc... but if you've got torn posters all over the wall you obviously don't care about the message you are sending out to your clients. I mean can your reception staff not take 5 mins to take them down and tidy the office?
3) Sorry but it is a major problem if you can't keep your pet records straight and you lose them.
I STAND BY MY REVIEW! and too bad if you don't like it, it's the truth.Listed in: Vets in Calgary

Review from Lisa G.

I do not know where to start. My bitch went in to be spade! I could pick her up 5-8 hours later. When we went to pick her up she was covered in vomit! So I asked someone to clean her up. She did a half assed job. When she sat up I informed them she was still bleeding. They pulled her out of the cage by her neck and she was dripping blood they was sending her home! I insisted on talking to the vet! He wanted her on her back and he grabbed her back end and twisted her. I did shout at him as she had just been operated on and he should of requested help not just grabbed her! When he turned her there was about an inch that had no stitches in! I requested he put more in or something to seal it to be told she will bleed more so why bother. But he was keeping her over night! Called sat told they were keeping her as she is still bleeding! We took here food etc. I called Sunday to see how she was, to be told she might get home Monday! I called mon 17 times and kept getting put on hold for ages. I went to collect her she was on a dirty bed weeping not bleeding. And heavily sedated! They had lost the medication for her! For 3 days at home she was very unsteady on her feet! 2 wks later they take out the stitches and what a mess she looks like she has been butcheredI am mortified!
I found some of the staff to be patronizing and have a lack of compassion and care for animals.
I was told when cleaning to pat dry and the nurse said I hadn't looked after her! I was fuming! When she asked who told me to clean it like that I told her only to be told I was wrong and the girl would say
Very disheartened by this
