I am obsessed with this place. I am obsessed with it even though the food is tasty, but not amazing; the ambiance is good, but not amazing; the staff are good, but not amazing. All in, it's a decent Mexican place, but for some reason I just love it.
In the small town of Smithers, you're not exactly spoiled for choice with eateries, but compared to Burns Lake, it's a cosmopolitan miracle of a town. The Trackside Cantina is right beside the railway - in fact, it shares a building with the rail station. You have to go into the station to use the bathroom, which I always use as an opportunity to peruse the used magazines and romance novels for sale ($1 each).
I ate at the Trackside Cantina last week. On the 1.5 hour car ride there, I listened to 'Mariachi El Bronx' (a new york mariachi-style band) to get me in the mood. Usually I go for the fish tacos, once I had the tostada, but this occasion I had the prawn taco. 6 tasty prawns grilled up and shoved in a soft taco with tomatoes and avocado mayo. On the side, rice and beans and salad. I think it's my new favourite. -

The only restaurant of its type in the area, nevertheless, the Cantina offers one of the best evening dining experiences in the valley, authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine, large plates, and reasonable prices. The Burrito Grande and Steak Fajita are solid bets.
