Review from Peter H.

Ever seen that episode of Seinfeld where Elaine orders Chinese food over the phone, and they make fun of her for ordering the same thing ever time? Well call me Miss Benes.
Perhaps it's my fault, I had it coming for ordering the same things once, twice or four hundred times. But nay, nay I say! it's not my fault, it's theirs! If they didn't have such great Japanese curries (curry salmon don anyone?) and fantastic house rolls (Stanley Park or Godzilla roll, hello!), I would not be calling for daily take out, and you would not be recognizing my voice on the phone.
Yes, the interior does look like a former Italian restaurant, that has been hastily converted into a Japanese restaurant. But that's only because it was a former Italian restaurant, that has been hastily converted into a Japanese restaurant. If you can look past that one little fault, great food and fine Italian tiled floors and walls await you.

Had a group lunch there recently and was not impressed. My tiny, dry teriyaki chicken tasted like bacon (and not good bacon), my tempura sauce was cold, the tea tasted bad, the decor is seriously shit brown and not appetizing and the overall feel is just depressing, cold and unwelcoming (we were in the back room mind you). I think the only possible positive was that they take large group reservations for lunch.
Maybe they're better for dinner? I doubt I'll ever go back to find out. -

I've been going to Toyotomi now for more than 3 years! They're great! Okay, I will admit, it's not the best sushi I've had (see my review for Oysi Oysi), but their food is of very good quality, sushi is always fresh, and the service is excellent. Actually, they would be the best sushi place for me except I feel that they have too much rice on their rolls. But it's not awful by any means.
Actually, their spicy tuna sashimi is really nice, fresh, and perfectly spicy. As Claudia mentioned, they have creative rolls with cheesy names. Their tempura is nice and they serve complimentary edamame to begin with.
Toyotomi is definitely one of my few favorite sushi places, because not only is their sushi good, but they have great service, and most importantly, they are clean!!!! I have never had an allergic reaction to anything I'm eaten from Toyotomi in the last 3 years and that's because they don't cross contaminate their salmon with other things! And this was before I even told them about my allergies. (I'm highly allergic to salmon and use this to test cleanliness of sushi places).
So yay for Toyotomi! I hope they stay in business for a while to come because they sure know what they're doing. -

Any sushi restaurant without the actual word "sushi" in the name gets a pat on the back from me *thumbs up*
Quick and cheap sushi with daily specials.
Food: I'm an avid sushi fan and I've tried lots of places. This is one of my favourites. Large menu and you can get a taste of everything because they have half orders for special rolls
i.Heart: (Warning: Cheesy names will appear in this sentence.) Hastings Roll, Queen E Park Roll, Stanley Park Roll.
Service: Quick.
Ambiance: After a quick reno and seating redistribution, it's a little better. Lunch time or quick bite atmosphere.Listed in: SFU Burnaby Student Eats, Sushi in Burnaby-ish. Best…

Today's a rare sushi treat: spicy salmon sashimi don, tempura and spinach gomae!
Personally the spicy salmon sashimi served on top of a large portion of rice was less than quality in the salmon department. The salmon had an off fishy odor and the texture was unimpressive. (I LOVE SALMON SASHIMI normally so this says something).
Prawn and Veggie Tempura was the 50% item for their current anniversary special - but even at four-something-the overly fried prawn were more like hard crunchy bits than morsels of yumminess.
Spinach Gomae? My FAVOURITE dish, however due to a lack of time at the restaurant I took it to go and later forgot it in my fridge (I try not to eat science experiments)
SERVICE?
It was noon and the restaurant had only a couple table of four's and very few single eaters. Why then would no one check on me for the WHOLE hour I was there? And then when I absolutely could no wait any longer (having no luck in getting anyone's attention) I went to the door where the hostess/cashier was and then had to wait even longer while two people sorted one customer.
Sigh.
Guess I'm not going back.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Brad E.
I really liked this place. We ate a late dinner here while we were in town for the Olympics.
We started with the miso soup (not too strong like some miso's). As others have said, the fish is very fresh. They have some fun imaginative rolls if you're into that (I am) but the sashimi is also a very good choice. I recommend the spider roll...or talk with the staff they are very helpful identifying rolls based on your taste.
I recommend this place to any sushi lover. Though VALUE isn't what it's all about with sushi, this place is a great bargain.
