Again, like some others.. the wait at Boiler Room was Kuma's-esque, so we tried out Township.
It's a cute storefront with simple amenities like tea lights and tap water sitting on each patron's table. The food (dinner and lunch) menu was a little scant, but the beer list was enormous. This makes sense as Township's sister is a music venue/bar next door.
My caprese panini was very tasty and plentiful, and easy on the wallet. Accompanied fries were par. The service was attentive, friendly and fast with our drink and food orders. I'll come back for sure. I'd even have the same caprese sammie, but I'd like to see more options on the menu. But talking with my fiance, she got the impression that Township may be grooming itself as being more of a breakfast/brunch place as opposed to a dinner/late food/bar food place. To which I thought.. dang.. that makes a lot of sense.
So yes, the food was very good and fresh, the service is excellent. I know it's still very new, but some decor suggestions would be: window treatments, dimmer lighting, and some more personality. Township was 'Pancho's" in its former life, but unfortunately, the ghost of Pancho's decor hasn't completely disappeared. But maybe that's the owners' intention. Who knows?
So anyway.. instead of falling back on Township, if Boiler Room is crowded, make it a destination. -

I went here a few weeks ago to see a friend's band play. While I totally missed them, because of my tenuous grasp of latenight 'arrive on time' skills, I loved this place.
I think this place is sort of a place to eat now, but on this night it was Pancho's, a cardboard box of a punk rock club. And it rocked. It seemed cleared out for the SRO crowd, with a bunch of people who all knew each other. And I wanted to hang out with the cool crowd.
I'd go back. Cool place, good beer list. For live music, it's a great venue. -
Review from Molly O.
Holllllleeeeeyyyshiz the brunch is so good here. I *loved* Treat like crazy, so I was so excited to hear that the owners were opening up their new place 10 minutes away from my apartment. The Township brunch is very similar to the old menu and the cooks still kill it.
However, Township doesn't have that cozy, bright, cheerful feel that the Treat space had. At all. If you are seated in the front area, it's fine. But the back "dining" room is large and awkward and heaven forbid you get seated along the bench at the back wall, because the tables will be up to your chin. Terrible for short people. I really don't get the flow of the place at all.
BUT, the food is outstanding. The coffee is great. Service is lovely. It's inexpensive.
The benedicts are amazing - the hollandaise! My steak was a little tough, but I can deal. The spinach they use is big old crinkly leafy spinach, not spinach in a bag spinach. Thank you! The spicy potatoes are wonderful. Make sure you get the buttermilk pancakes with chevre and chai syrup. TO DIE. Our party of 6 ordered all savory dishes, so we got an order for the table and it disappeared in 4 seconds.
I hope they spiff this place up a bit, or utilize the back room a little better. Or something. Some paint?
Seriously. -

I went into Township to see a friend's band last night. To be clear, I wasn't on the "food side," I was on the "band side."
I'm excited to see what comes out of this place. Looks like it has some potential. -

Really? What don't I like about this place?? The food is fantastic, the servers, bartenders, and cooks are chatty and interesting. Music line up is solid and stylistically varied. The bathroom is even clean. I heard they're waiting for a patio permit. One more thing to love about Logan Square.

The folks at Township have really turned around what used to be a bit of a dump. I've only been to the bar side to see shows and completely approve of the little touches that have been made to modernize and clean up the venue. It seems cleaner and more streamlined. I still think the drinks are too expensive for what they are (a tiny gin and tonic should not be $7 when the Whistler down the street makes dynamite, fresh, strong cocktails for $8).
My friends told me the food was amazing, so I will have to go back during the daytime.
One last thing--why can't shows start at a decent hour? Starting at 10 or 11 with the headlining band going on after midnight or even 1am is just too late. Especially on a weeknight.Listed in: Logan Square, Small Venues

Great location, decent food, embarrassingly bad service...at least on the morning we were there for brunch. Our group of four waited at the front door for about five minutes before someone even acknowledged us (nope, there wasn't a line). One of us finally had to track down a server to ask if we could sit at the open four-top in the back. She told us to wait, and it took another 15 mintues or so before they actually brought us back to sit down. Confusing, because as I said, there was no line, and this table was open and clean.
The brunch food was good, though they are seriously lacking in "sweeter" brunch fare (some sort of berry french toast situation, perhaps, in addition to the many savory choices?). But again, the servers were confused. Three different people stopped by our table, clearly not certain whose responsibility we were. (Did I mention that there was no line? And that the place was not full? Hence my confusion at their confusion.)
My husband's steak benedict came out very, very rare (rare as in, well, raw). He's not afraid of rare meat, but this was too much even for him. It took us a good 10 mintues to track down a server. When my husband explained the problem, the server's response was, "Um, so what do you want me to do?" Uh, fix it? Please? The rest of us had finished eating by the time his food came back out.
Annoying as all these things were, perhaps the most annoying was the fact that our coffee was never once refilled/reheated (it's BRUNCH, people!!), and once our food came to the table we didn't see a server again. (In addition to the aforementioned server flagging, for example, my friend had to go to the counter to get his own clean fork when his fell onto the floor.)
So. Try it out if you like. I'm all about supporting neighborhood joints. Just don't say you weren't warned if the cruddy service gets the better of you. -

Love it! I was really sad when Treat closed and was wondering when the new restaurant would open. Thankfully this one is closer to my house and has a bar/music venue attached - nice! The restaurant itself is pretty spacious, doesn't quite have the charm of Treat, but I think they are still settling in. The food is still spot on; I've only been for brunch so far, but the menu is familiar: the saag paneer scramble is still there, french toast with chai syrup... etc. Yum. They serve booze - yay! And the beer list is pretty extensive. There was live jazz during brunch. Service was friendly. I left happy and full :)
Only reason it's not a 5 star review - CASH only (boo), and I was hoping for a bit of a change in the menu. The menu is very similar (if not almost identical) to Treat's menu, which while it is delicious, it doesn't seem innovative at this point. Overall Township is very welcome in Logan Square; I'm excited to come back for another meal and some live music! -

Yay for being down the street, serving Dark Matter coffee and having an interesting menu worth checking out again. It's a restaurant I really want to like more, but based on this first go round, can't give more than 3 stars.
Not so yay for kinda bland food (saag paneer scramble: under seasoned, pooris that had a lovely texture, but again, lacked flavor, but the Indian inspired potatoes were pretty good).
Service seemed...a bit indifferent? While I got my coffee refill(s) and we were checked in on, there was a general lack of warmness.
I'm hoping to go back, either solo or with another person to give some of their other food a try and perhaps come in for a different meal (i.e. lunch or dinner).
Really want this place to thrive and succeed given the location and having missed out on experiencing Treat. -

We came in for dinner because Boiler Room had a long wait and we were pretty hungry. I hadn't heard of this place before, but glad we came in! I only had a grilled cheese, and carrot soup. Grilled cheese was good, carrot soup was awesome! I wanted more. Delicious, great flavor...but it was not hot (temperature) enough.
Oh, it was $6 and included a Milwaukee's Best...but I ordered a different beer instead.
Now I want to try the brunch, and the bar.
The only thing I would recommend is a little decor and some music. Maybe dim the lights a little. The bathroom was smelly....both times I went in. -

I love Township, both the bar AND the restaurant. Here's why:
-A group of about 7 of us showed up for brunch on the very first day it opened, without a reservation, about an hour before closing, and although they were completely packed, they sat us (and were amazingly sweet about it). The service wasn't perfect, seeing as they were VERY busy/it was their first day/we showed up just before their kitchen closed, but we had a great time nonetheless AND the food was amazing. I had the chickpea pancakes with the poached eggs- so good! The bloody marys were delicious as well.
-I've gone in a few times after work to buy the famous fish sandwich... believe the hype. It's delicious and cheap.
Finally: One Sunday morning, on my way to work, I was in desperate need of coffee and I looked into Township's window. They weren't open yet, but the nice ladies inside let me in and made me a latte, despite the fact that they weren't even open yet. They were very sweet- they listened to me complain about having to go in to work on 3 hours of sleep. I was terribly hungover and, had it not been for the latte, I probably would have had a terrible day at work. The next time I stopped in for coffee, the nice girl behind the counter even asked me how my day went; she remembered me!
All in all, it's a great place and I'm happy to live around the corner from it. My only suggestion is to keep working on them milk foamin' skills... I know it's not a coffee shop, but if they're going to serve Dark Matter coffee, they should be able to make that perfect latte microfoam (I know I sound like a snob... I am). -

Hit Township this morning for breakfast. Pass this corner twice everyday, and now I know I'll be stopping in on a regular basis.
There are a lot of places in the area that do brunch, but many of them don't open until 11 or so. My parents are visiting and they don't wait that late to eat, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that Township is not only within walking distance of my place, but opens for brunch at 9 on Saturday and Sunday.
Service was excellent. We were seated right away, were able to order coffee before we even sat down. The coffee, by the way, is Dark Matter. This didn't mean anything to me before this morning, but now I know it's amazing. The waitress was helpful and somewhat bubbly without being overbearing.
The menu isn't large, but everything on it seems to be well thought-out. I could see myself ordering pretty much anything. Between the three of us, we had the crimini benedict, salmon benedict, and the bacon, tomato, and onion omelet. The portion sizes were just right, and everything was delicious. The hollandaise on the benedicts had a depth of flavor beyond any other hollandaise I've had. The omelet was chock full of bacon and the benedicts had plenty of salmon and mushrooms. Plus the potato cakes that came with each dish were tasty and a nice diversion from the typical hash brown/homefry breakfast potato choices.
I will DEFINITELY be back for brunch, and I'm already planning a stop here for dinner, too.
Come prepared: it's cash only.Listed in: Awesome in Logan Square

We went here one night instead of waiting in line for the Boiler Room. Very simple place but more importantly very cheap. The food was very good, I split the tortilla soup with my girlfriend, which was delicious. Completely vegetarian, which is difficult to find. I had the Caprese panini and my girlfriend had the grilled cheese with tomato. The panini was definitely better but both were good.
Their beer selection was very good!
Again I can't emphasize how cheap it was!! Good service too. -

I love this place.
For anyone that says "I miss Panchos!!!!" - go down the street to Ronny's.
This is basically the same as Panchos with WAY better beer, WAY better food, and it's not a complete eyesore like it used to be.
Don't get me wrong - I loved it when it was Panchos, but come on... please don't be nostalgic for nostalgia's sake. Panchos wasn't the Fireside so please stop treating it like it was.
Panchos was always empty before these guys came in and breathed life into it. Pancho himself is a hell of a dude and he cracks me up, but I couldn't be happier with the new direction.
I had brunch here a few weeks ago and it was killer.
I really like having more beer options than "Well... we have High Life..."
The bar is CASH ONLY, and I'm alright with that. Just plan ahead... or do what I do and step over to Boiler Room to use their ATM and get a free shot of Jameson, then come back to Township with your cash and some fire in your chest.
5 stars. -

I'm sorry to do this....but...I won't give it one star because it's a new bar....I can't give it more than two because I did not have a good experience.
I walked in around 8:30 pm 2/4. Boiler Room was crazy and I noticed that Panchos was not really Panchos anymore.
When I walked in there were about 5 people in the bar, the bartender was in the middle of a story with a patron and was not bothered to shoot us a Hello or acknowledgement that we walked in. I looked around and saw a stage and sound system....which i thought was pretty cool...
We waited and got the menu than id....We ordered two beers and I asked to open a tab...
He said they do not take credit cards. I then responded with if it was possible to hold my credit card and ID so we could pay right before we left (for collateral) he then responded with "We don't do tabs." oooooook. I paid cash and left his tip where he circled back to his buddy and I clearly heard his buddy as what we were discussing where he then stated again..."ya know we don't do tabs here...it's not that kind of bar."
What kind of bar? A bar with a credit card machine and manners? We then were approached by a blond girl in a ponytail who seemed frantic....I over heard her saying she has not heard from the band that was going to play and she was trying to get in contact with them....With that said she then approaches me and says "are you here for the concert?" I responded "No we have a big party and we were supposed to go to boiler room but it's too crowded" She then says " oh...well it's ok you don't have to pay."
I'd assume that because there were 5 people in the bar and NO BAND I wouldn't have to pay....NUTS....the attitudes in there were crazy! such a weird uncomfortable vibe!
OHHHHH icing on the cake...they serve food. woman brings out two plates...I believe by the time the woman brought the plates out she forgot what was what..... THE BARTENDER LIFTS THE BREAD WITH HIS HANDS TO TAKE A PEAK.....I gasped I couldn't believe it....I'm not even sure if they noticed that I saw everything....I had to get out of there asap...
Listen here Township....I don't know if I'll be back....but being a new bar I'd expect a welcoming attitude....I think my experience deserves ONE STAR.....i'm giving you an extra one because I'm not trying to be a jerk....but....eh me thinks not.Comment from Brian P. of Township 2/11/2012

I've been to the Township a few times now since they opened. I've been impressed with the staff and the sound quality since they first started doing shows. Pretty much everyone I have encountered there is super nice, and the production and booking staff is top notch.
The expanded beer menu is a welcome addition to the food which is a super bonus that they serve up late night. The Samosas with the fancy dancy sauces are out of this world. The super secret spicy sauce that the cook whips up for the fries is what I have been missing all my life. It's great to get there a little early for a show and chow down on some great grub and some good beers before the music starts.
Factor all that in with the weekend brunch, oh my. My better half has been looking for a halfway decent vegan breakfast in the neighborhood since Vella Cafe closed down a few years ago and she found it at Township. She now dreams of the Seitan Chorizo Scramble and can't wait for the weekend to return so we can go back. There usually isn't a wait unlike other less interesting, more expensive breakfasts in the hood.
Township definitely adds to my 5 star life style, and is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. -

Tamiz is back! The master from Treat has opened a new place and his food is as delicious as ever.
Brunch is excellent. Dinner, awesome. Beer list is top notch. The place is brand new and, allegedly, they "are still working out kinks", but you could have fooled me. I am so excited to have a new, unpretentious place in the neighborhood where quality and value aren't mutually exclusive, and the service is warm and inviting.

Went here for brunch this morning and it hit the spot. Lots of vegetarian selections (at least for brunch) and 1 maybe 2 vegan options. I had the chorizo (Uptons) scramble and my husband had the herb omelot. Both were great. Both came with an indian flavored potato cake thing that was delicious. Servings were generous. Liked the Dark Matter coffee. We were too early for breakfast cocktails, so we will have to go back.
Comfortable environment, chill music playing, friendly, prompt service. Think they are still working out a few kinks, but nothing worth mentioning. We will definitely go back for brunch again.
Lunch menu looked good, but not too much vegetarian. Samosas I think were the only item. Might be wrong about that. -

A pretty solid pretty welcome restaurant, from the people who brought us Treat (RIP), still featuring the Indian-spiced fusion items.
It is very vegetarian functional and offers enough vegan items (somewhat confusingly labeled as "can be made vegan," so do check if you care) to make a mark. I'd appreciate some sort of possible vegetarian add-on, as all the brunch sides are meat.
The do offer beer and cocktails. The brunch cocktails are overpriced ($8 for a beer-mosa is a bit much for a quarter of a beer and a couple ounces of OJ). Beer offerings are solid, though. Good coffee.
The decor is much as Treat, a largely unimproved space with some bright colors and young-person arts on the wall. The windows are South facing and the sun was a little rough on the eyes.
Our food was excellent, hearty and well thought out.
Service is ehhhh. There was a piece of metal (foil or something, tiny but clearly metal) on my food, I noted this to waitress, who didn't care/do anything/offer anything, as one might expect if there is metal in your food. An honest mistake from the kitchen I hope, and could have been easily resolved through better service -- a free beer-mosa, at almost no cost to the restaurant, maybe, or dessert. It's the offer of resolution and perception of caring that matters more than the actual details of the resolution.
Anyway, it's a new place. Looks like they'll have music (jazz) and dinner as well. I think they'll tighten up a bit and this will be one of my favorite places in the neighborhood. Will be back soon, no doubt. -
Review from Adele n.
The fun music venue Pancho's was reborn as Township recently. I really liked Pancho's. Township is the same as Pancho's in all material respects except these:
1. New Paint Job. There used to be big palm trees painted on the walls, now everything is a nice purple gray.
2. Fancy and Expensive Beers. They still have cans of Old Milwaukee for $2, though.
3. Pancho is Not Behind the Bar Doing Tricks and Playing Saxophone. Rumor is he retired. Sadness! He was a very cool bar owner and made this such a fun place to see music.
Still, Township seems pretty cool. It's got big shoes to fill!Listed in: Live Music

Really wanted to like this place. Love to support local joints, the beer selection and cocktail offering is great. But...
When we went for brunch, the service was painfully slow and some food was horribly prepared.
First, it took forever to get our orders in. Despite the fact lunch service was only ten minutes away, we were unable to place an order for a burger. Okay fine, but our order did not get placed with the kitchen until well after the 11a lunch service mark. We watched as the waitress wandered here, there, everywhere, before heading back to the kitchen. Then, we waited well over 45 minutes. Finally, the food arrived!
The Sag Paneer Scramble was tasty. The Poori was a little bland, but the texture was right. The savory food and coffee, all in all, very good. But it seems the sweet stuff was an afterthought. The batter of the pancakes was no good. And the pancakes themselves were not even cooked properly. The syrup? No good. So the plate was barely touched. You would think this would signal to the server to ask if everything is okay. Not here. We were never asked. Not even when the server came to collect the full plate of raw pancake batter. We could have complained but didn't feel it would have been worth it as it took them 45 minutes to deliver our original order.
Might go back for that Sag Paneer Scramble. It was the only redeeming aspect. Otherwise, this would have been a single star review. -

I've stumbled into township twice since it's opening....once literally.
After a few too many old man sodas, I stumbled into Township and ordered a beer and burger special for around 10 bucks. As far as I remember it was damn good....
The other day I met up with a friend for some sunday morning lunch or brunch, as the kids are calling it these days, and was floored with the deliciousness.
I ordered the steak benedict. I never over steak or benedicts for breakfast but for whatever reason I went with it. It was the best breakfast I've had in years. The price was ridiculously low for what I was given and the flav-o-meter (which converts the Shawon-o-meter to taste) was through the roof. I HIGHLY recommend it.
And the coffee was strong! -

Welcome to the neighborhood Township. I stopped by here the other morning to grab a coffee and do a little work. I had a latte and a pastry. The pastry was pretty good, but the latte was one of the best that I have ever had! Seriously, it was smooth and not too bitter and served in a European glass which added a nice touch. My wife had the same was was equally impressed.
I'll definitely be back for my coffee fix and can't wait to go back to try out the burgers and hear some live music. -

Went right after this place opened. The service was bad and my food came out cold. It wasn't even that good. We went with a group of 7 and it took forever. I'm not the kind of person who enjoys waiting around a restaurant for 2 and a half hours for mediocre, cold food, and lousy, confused service.

this place has a lot of potential! i stumbled in here with a friend the other day and we sat down for a delicious meal.
the samosas are not bad at all and the tamarind sauce that comes with is amazing! we also had the fried fish sandwich, caprese sandwich, and lots of beer. the fish sandwich is so great! it's fried perfectly and on the soft bread, and topped with capers and pickled onions. i've already had it three times in a short period, which i know isn't healthy, but it's so cheap (six dollars) and good! except that some bites are way too salty. still, it's hard to stay away. i also like their fries - they are the crusty coated kind mmm. there are lots of good bottled beers here and the service is very friendly.
one time, my friend picked up a takeout sandwich and fries for me and asked for sides of the samosa sauces because i like to dip my fries in them. they were super nice about giving up the sauce and also even recommending and packing one more delicious aioli meant to go with the fries that i hadn't tried before. you can really win me over with sauce and niceness.
here are things they could change that would make me think five stars:
- make that delicious fish sandwich less salty (this is the biggest one and really the only actual one)
- beers on draft
- accept credit cards
- better ventilation so you don't walk out of there permeated with grease smell (not sure if that's what will help - i'm sure it's more complicated than this.)
i really do love this place though and it's on the way home from the subway so i know i'll be back. i'm excited to eat here many more times over the next couple weeks! -

Formerly Panchos, Township has created a casual dining spot with above average food and sandwich / beer combo deals for around $10. I understand that the owner is formerly of Treat, and that comes across a bit with some Indian touches on the menu. The fish sandwich was great, the soup was good, and the samosas were decent. The chutneys that accompanied the samosas were on point.
The atmosphere, while more inviting than its predecessor, remains a bit cold. The large size of the space doesn't help. Hopefully this will improve as time goes on and more customers fill it.
I am glad to have Township in the neighborhood, though I feel like they still need to find their niche. Is it a coffee shop? Is it a diner? Is it a late night place? If I could pick, I would angle more towards late night eats. Post 2AM eateries is an underdeveloped category in Logan Square, and cheap samosas would make bad ass late night food. -

WOW that was a good brunch. I wasn't even aware of Township and a friend suggested it for brunch today. Was welcomed with a live jazz (trio? Quartet? I wasn't paying attention but they sounded good) and ended up sitting on the bar side.
The ambiance needs a little help; it's a great space - but very large and it there's a bit of disconnect b/t the diner-esque front, the dining room in the back, and the adjoining bar. Anyway, it's brand new and I'm sure they are still working on the decor. Really friendly people working there. The bar area looks like it could be a killer place to see a band, a la empty bottle.
The food was GREAT - best brunch I've had in a while, and not the kind of brunch you can get anywhere. These people CARE about the food and it showed. I had to practice serious restraint to keep from finishing the last bits of my saag paneer scramble, which seemed like at least a portion and a half. The breakfast is a tad on the pricey side (my scramble/potato cake/poori plate was $12) but you know what, it was worth it. Well-thought out flavors with a direly-missing-in-logan-square Indian bent. Loved it and will be back often! Breakfast bar drinks were great too. Can't wait to try dinner, menu looks fantastic. -

I work in the neighborhood, and am SO happy to have a place to grab food that is actually healthy and fresh. For the reviewer who found the samosas to be the only vegetarian option, I offer the dinner I had last night: carrot ginger soup and the caprese pannini. Absolutely delicious (especially when paired with one of the beers off their mile-long list). Nice, chill, cozy atmosphere and pleasant, attentive service. And they serve food until 2am! What a fabulous option for those of us who work 2nd and 3rd shift. I'll be back soon and often.

Just went there for brunch. It was really great! I had the Saag Paneer Scramble and my girlfriend had the Cremini Mushroom Benedict. They were both so good that we switched plates in the middle so we could have more than one bite. We both enjoy Indian influenced cooking, and this place was perfect. We received our food quickly and the wait staff is super friendly. If you're in the area on a Saturday or Sunday morning I'd highly recommend stopping in. Their dishes are really Vegan / Vegetarian friendly, and if you have a Gluten allergy, all of the items are marked if they're Gluten free. I'm excited for the new addition to the neighborhood, and will be going back again and again and again.

It is great to have another new spot in south Logan Square. We had brunch there this morning and especially enjoyed the Green Eggs & Ham. The eggs are made green by very tasty walnut pesto. I also enjoyed my bacon and cheddar omelet.
