Bought all my roman blocks here for my patio. The price was decent, delivered on time and they had everything else I needed. Wide range of wood products here and they have the most experienced staff I have encountered at any renovation store.

Will go here again and recommend this store.

I always wondered how the smaller hardware stores like Home Hardware and Totem can keep up with the corporate juggernauts that are Rona, Home Depot, and now Lowe's.

After shopping around for prices for some landscaping supplies, I understand now why Totem still exists after all this time.

Some of their prices are comparable if not better than the bigger stores. What I was most impressed with was the depth of knowledge the staff has when it comes to projects around the home. Unlike the bigger stores, the staff was readily available to answer any questions especially with their giant service desk right in the middle.

Speaking of prices, signing up for their card gives you an additional 10% off your purchase up to $250 in reduction. Their card allows some pretty attractive financing options such as don't pay for 3, 6, 10 months or equal payments as well.

They even have free popcorn for those who have to bring in their kids!

Don't be fooled by the notion you'll be getting better quality and service at the bigger stores. It's the personal conversations that you have with experts that makes the difference.

I've been patronizing this Totem store since it opened, easily done since I have a 55+ year-old house that needs constant repair and upgrading.  I can't find a room in the house (or my garage) that hasn't involved Totem in some way.  Why do I keep going back when a big-box competitor open up closer to where I live?

Many reasons.  One is that the prices are competitive although not necessarily the lowest.  Secondly, they have a website that may not be the fanciest for this category of store, but if you see the widget you need for your project, you can depend on it actually being in the shop.  Third, the staff are helpful, experienced and mostly middle-aged.  They know the stock and they can guide you in determining whether you need a left-handed or a right-handed widget for the job.  Try that at the other big-box stores where the help consists of minimum wage high school dropouts who would be just as happy flipping burgers as finding widgets.  Fourth, They have a popcorn machine with fresh, hot popcorn on the weekend.  Finally, Totem is Alberta-based.  That's not necessarily a recommendation, given some of the scoundrels our business community has produced but, in this case, it is.  They often have Alberta-unique items that the eastern or US-based competition don't bother carrying.

My only complaint is that the parking at this particular branch is inadequate, especially when they sell cash and carry items that require a pickup to haul away.  My recommendation would be to shop during the week.  You'll miss the popcorn but you'll avoid getting a door ding while you're in the store.
