I would fly to Vancouver and wait the 1.5 hrs in line again just to eat here!!
Waiting for food sucks, but the people are super nice and they try their best to accommodate everybody.
Sushi Sushi Sushi... basically pick your favorite type of sushi and it will one of the best slices you have ever had!!   And if you want to try something new, its the best place to try it.  I'm not an uni fan, but my friend insisted I try it.... it was one of the best food experiences in my life :)  Ooooorgasmic!!
One thing I was disappointed in was the whole time we were waiting we were eying what we thought was the bake Miso black cod.  They were out by the time we sat down.  One day I hope to try it!

I have the good fortune of living a block from this place, so like another poster on here, I just walk over and write my name down, then head back home and have a beer while I'm waiting. If it weren't for this, I'm not sure I would have the patience to wait an hour in that cramped little hallway. I might have given this place 5 stars if it weren't for their stubbornness about opening either a larger location or a second location.

Anyway, to the food - it is truly amazing. I've been to Japan and can say that this is as authentic as it gets in Vancouver. Some people on here criticize the restaurant for being too expensive, and they can get the same sushi elsewhere for less money. I strongly disagree with this. I work downtown and love sushi, and there are a few places I go to that aren't bad and are indeed less expensive, but are nowhere near the same quality. The saying quantity does not equal quality could not be more true for sushi. The skill involved in making good sushi is ridiculous - perfect rice, hand moulded to have small pockets of air to keep it light, etc. Toshi has it down - it's more than a slab of fish on rice. Beyond the sushi, the nasu dengaku, or miso baked eggplant is totally ballin' and the spicy agedashi tofu is the shiz - pretty hard to go wrong at this place.

Not much to say here. Traditional kind of sushi joint, great fish, great rice, good prices, good service. It's a quickie, what more do you want from me, a frikkin' sonnet? Bugger off and go eat some fish.

Don't worry- it IS worth waiting in line for.

In a city where it is DAMN difficult to find a Japanese owned/run sushi joint, this place is spot on.

After I waited a little over half an hour (first one on the wait list) to take my seat at the sushi bar, I could instantly tell the sashimi was fresh and the sushi quality.

I was amused by the couple beside me who lamented about the high prices.
Let me tell you- we are SPOILED in Vancouver to have SO much fresh fish that we have become used to paying low prices for some  chopped up raw salmon.

THIS place is NOT one of those cookie cutter, chinese-owned, cheap sashimi places.  Expect to pay a couple more, WELL SPENT, dollars on proper sushi chefs.

The overall resto is very good value for your money.  Definitely worth it for people who can tell the difference between 2/3 star chain-Vancouver-sashimi and proper sushi-chef creations.

I'd say this is all round best sushi restaurant that is right in between the a-ok chinese owned and the higher end izakayas.

Tips
-they do do takeout (heh..you said do do)
-arrive early, put your name on the list and take a walk.  a long one
-once you are seated feel free to take your time and enjoy.  really.
-don't get too excited and feel the need to order everything.  you can always come back.
-please don't come here with more than a group of 4.  you simply WONT fit.

I wish they would take reservations!

I don't do lines well but we had friends in town and I wanted to take this off my places to try list... don't come here hungry!  We arrived around 7:30 and got in around 8:30... so make sure you like the people you're eating with because you'll be talking for awhile!

Great menu - wide selection of both hot and cold items.  Prices are reasonable - sushi pieces are all under $2.30-ish.  Service is fast once you've got a table.

What I loved - all the sushi!  I love Aji and theirs is great.  Nice job with the wild salmon and unagi.  Had a sampling of their rolls - their Philadelphia is one of the best I've had - YUMMY!  Negitoro and mango and smoked salmon rolls were good and similar in quality to nice sushi places.  The black cod in miso was totally buttery-melt-in-your-mouth good!

If you're good at waiting, the food quality and price is 5 stars.

Overall 4 stars for me!

A hidden gem with no reservations permitted - but totally worth it!

Don't go with cranky hubby's who just want to eat so I bring him a snack just in case :)

Really fresh and good menu, wish it were closer to me but I'd still trek over for this place.

Simply the best overall Japanese restaurant in town. There is always a line up so get there early or late.

The last time I went we had soft shell crab karage, tuna tataki and a bunch of sushi. The sushi is of amazing quality and there is always something seasonal on the menu - spot prawn nigiri are so sweet and delicious.

Toshi's always lives up to and exceeds my expectations. If you haven't gone you must.

There is always a long line of people waiting to get seated at Toshi's and I hesitate to add another glowing review to the restaurant for selfish reasons but for my first Yelp review, I decided to single out the best Japanese restaurant in Vancouver.

The service at Toshi's is very good.  The servers are quick and competent.  The sushi chefs are friendly, informative and observant to the needs of the customers.  The kitchen is also very efficient because you never have to wait a long time for anything.

This is one of those rare restaurants where both the raw food and the cooked food are fantastic.

My favorite item from the sushi bar is the Box Roll, which consists of sushi rice packed into a box with a taste of avocado and spicy sauce then a combination of salmon, prawns, scallops and a razor thin slice of lemon are placed on top and pressed into a box shape.

My favorite cooked item is the Nasu Dengaku, which is eggplant coated in miso and mirin (my uneducated guess) then wrapped in foil and grilled.  This results in a dish that is both salty and sweet, with the inside of the eggplant being warm and soft while the skin provides just the right amount of crispy texture to make this a perfect dish.

Everything on the menu is also very reasonably priced, including their beer and sake.

The wait times are long but they are worth it.  Don't come here with a large group because the wait time will be even longer and they may not be able to accommodate your party plus I don't want to have to wait any longer than I already do.

My favorite place in Vancouver for sushi. As a vegetarian sushi eater there are many options, and a a fish eater there are even more. Looks fresh, tastes fresh, and the colours are amazing.
I LOVE the spicy tofu and the veggie combo roll. I will order this for take out, or just go when the doors open at 5pm and grab my quick eat so i don't have to wait in the often long line.

This place must be doing something right if it can open only 3 hours and 45 minutes Tuesday through Saturday! We were recommended this place when in Vancouver so we had to try it out. For the price and quality of food we had, I would go here and wait in line again. All the food we ordered was pretty freakin' good.

In our first attempt to eat here, we had no idea of the crazy times this place goes on. Our clueless asses tried to walk to at 9pm just to find out it closes at 8:45pm... hahahahaaaa! We were talking to people in front of the place and they told us we have to be here before opening because it gets busy real fast.

So we get there the next day at 4pm... no line yet... At 4:20, we see a group of 4 standing in front so we get in line. By 5pm, the line stretched out almost to the corner.

We get in and ordered Edemame for starters (fresh and crunchy), mixed tempura (really good too), seafood gyoza (super good), and for the main course we ordered 4 or 5 different rolls... I wish I could remember the names but I just remember them being really good... I think the one I liked the most was the Una Kyu... The two that tasted okay were the California King (too much avocado) and the Spider Roll (not enough taste)... One thing I noticed too was the rice didn't taste fresh for some reason. Like it has been sitting in the pot for awhile. I dunno...

For the final price we paid for the quantity and quality of food we got for four people, plus we ordered dessert, this was worth the trouble and wait to go here.

Was absolutely delicious. They had a mango/smoked salmon roll on special that was hard to stop ordering more and more of. Came with friends from Brazil who travel everywhere and they thought it was the best sushi they've had. Yes service quality at sushi places is generally poor and this was no different, but for the price and quality, I'd rather have this than the Tojo's celeb experience that I'd have.

As usual the only complain is the wait times, but that only goes to show how this is the best sushi spot in town for Vancouverites

AWESOME!  As always.

Just finished having dinner here, and Toshi did not disappoint.  Uni, eggplant, black cod, shrimp tempura...totally AMAZING!!!

We got here at 4:45 and there was already a line forming.  Luckily we got seated right away (table for 3).  The food came out in a timely manner; sushi first and then the eggplant and then the tempura and then the cod.  This gave us time to start with the sushi, have great conversations and then the next course would arrive.

Truly, one of the best japanese restaurants in town!  A Must-Try for every Vancouverite or visitor who loves great Japanese food.

Fresh, amazing, lovely food.  Food that will make you feel like you are falling in love as you eat it.

There is a reason why there is always a line-up here.  The food is worth it.  If you are looking for a anonymous quickie go somewhere else. (Food people, I am talking about food!!!)  If you are looking for an amazing dining experience, then prepare for a wait.  You will be glad you did.

I waited for an hour before I got to sit at the bar! I read many positive reviews about this restaurant. However, when I ordered and ate my food - I wasn't super satisfied. Yeah, their food is good, but a little pricey. For the amount of people lining up, I would've expected way better food. There was one roll (salmon roll) that kind of tasted like canned salmon, but I think they just ground up their salmon - which wasn't so tasty. Their ebi sunomono was quite tasty - and the price was fair.

I don't think I'll be coming back. If the wait wasn't so long, I might. However, for the food I get, I can honestly go elsewhere.

Don't bring a big group to this restaurant. It's very small.

I am adding to the pile of enthusiastic reviews. I don't go To Toshi often because I am not yet old enough to start thinking about dinner at 4:30 pm. That's the kind of planning it takes to get to Toshi when it opens at 5 pm, when there might already be people waiting. I get ornery when I have to wait in a lineup for extended periods before eating. Whichever reviewer suggested bringing snacks had it right. This is one of relatively few sushi places here, along with Juno downtown, owned and run by Japanese. The staff, particularly a male server -is exemplary and very helpful. Attentive but not hovering. The sushi chefs themselves turn out very high quality work which seemingly was decorating the ocean floor only a short time before. The presentation is worthy of the flavour and even the ceramic plates and bowls are well chosen. Toshi's tempura is near-perfect. I have also been pleased with the chicken and beef dishes.
As others have mentioned, the obstinately limited opening hours and seeming disinterest in expanding even extends to the fact that every time I have been there, hoping for a takeout menu to pass on to friends, I have been told that they didn't have any. I know this all flies in the face of the North American business philosophy of following success with growth but I guess for now I'll put my name on the list at the front of the restaurant and take my juice box outside to wait.

YES, The line is long.
YES, It is worth it!

I got the bento box because I wanted everything and I got what I wanted. It came with some nigiri and sashimi, both of which were mostly the same fishes because it was the chef's selection. The fish looked quite fresh and the pieces were huge. The sashimi was cut in nice slabs and meat on the nigiri was bigger than the rice part, which was great. Plus, they put wasabi on it so you don't have to. There were also spicy tuna rolls, which wasn't extraordinary, but better than other spicy tuna rolls I've had. It also came with shrimp shirataki, which was refreshing. The vinegar sauce was sour, but light. I liked the selection of tempura and it was still hot when I bit into it. It was pretty oily, but the oil they used wasn't old. The bento box also came with a special dish that changes and this time it was fried fish cakes. The fish cakes were not made from fish paste, but actual fish meat. It was so densely packed that it made me really full. It was drizzled with a tangy sauce that had a hint of tamarind to it. It also came with miso soup in a cute cup. The miso soup was better than most complimentary miso soups because it had silken tofu bits as well as shredded fried tofu.

While the head sushi chefs are working their magic at the bar, I got to see all the action in the kitchen while I was waiting for the restroom in the back. Everyone's working super fast back there, but they all seem calm and collected. The kitchen is as big as the dining area. The service is good and my tip seemed worth it. They don't take reservations and they only do take out if they feel like it. Apparently, it's only open for dinner so there's a short window of time and it's some famous chef's side job??

Good food, but not worth the wait. We waited for an hour! They basically have a list on the wall that you just add your name to the bottom of, so don't show up hungry because you will feel like you are there to set the Guiness World Record for who can wait the longest to get seated at a table where you bump elbows with your neighbour. We had driven by so many times, and there was always a line and people milling about outisde so we had to know what the fuss was about.

Sure, the food was good, well, except for the maki roll that my BF ordered, it was a soy bean roll and he said it tasted like vomit, so when he tried to offer a taste to me I obviously declined.

I would go back if they accepted reservations or if I didn't have to waste an hour of my life waiting to be seated, but until then I will keep eating at other sushi restaurants where my stomach doesn't digest itself while I wait for a table.

I had never read a review of this little nugget, but I had walked and driven by numerous times and noticed groups of people milling about outside. I had never heard of Toshi (and I have crazy foodie friends), so I wrongly assumed that these crowds were accumulating due to the lack of good Japanese restaurants along Main and/or cheap prices. Well, I ate there last night and am thoroughly happy and excited to report that Toshi's is always busy because IT IS FRIGGIN AWESOME!

My posse ordered: salmon/toro sashimi, gyoza, the house roll (prawn, cucumber, avacado, roe), negitoro maki, miso and a bowl of udon. I adored everything but the gyoza. They are deepfried, and I hate deepfried foods (except for Mars bars...and halibut...and doughnuts...and hot wings...and......).

My fellow Yelpers all agree that the food is great here, but I would like to emphasize how wonderful the staff are. First, there were five servers, and only about ten tables. This is a 2:1 ratio! Second, Toshi always has at least three sushi chefs working together, in addition to chefs in the back prepping hot dishes. Our items were at our table within five minutes of ordering.

I was also coddled by several of the middle-aged female servers because I whipped out my own chopsticks, along with their sleek bamboo carrying case. Little did I know that these cases are primarily used by schoolchildren...I really couldn't tell whether these jolly Japanese ladies were laughing with me or AT me ;)

Not a huge selection of sushi but what they have is always fresh and reasonably priced. I use to frequent Tojos until my boyfriend's father suggested we try this place. They occassionally have specials like hamachi depending on the season.

My favorites besides the sashimi and uni are the baked eggplant and miso cod - both require some time to prepare so make sure to order immediately with your drinks while you decide upon what else to order.

They don't accept reservations so prepare to line up. We usually put our names down and walk around a while to avoid waiting in the cramped waiting area or order take out when the wait is too ridiculous.

Hands down, my favourite sushi place in Vancouver so far.  Ok, well the lineup was no fun (1 hour) but we came here fully expecting the wait time.

Once you sit down, the service is super quick.  I always judge a sushi place by the Uni.  The uni here sure was fresh and delicious (but they were running out for the day...so we could only order a few pieces of Uni Sushi).  I really enjoyed their horse mackerel sashimi special.  Actually everything we ordered was really fresh good quality stuff.  With a bottle of sake, the bill for 5 people all pleasantly stuffed was a little over $100.  Definitely worth the lineup for the quality.

Sushi here is nothing short of AMAZING! The fish is always FRESH and the delicate little pieces of sushi just melt in your mouth. This could easily be my #1 sushi joint, except for the fact it's so busy even before they open. Service is fast and friendly and the prices are very reasonable considering the high quality sushi. My favorites being the House Roll(Shrimp Tempura, cucumber, avocado slices on top), Negitoro Roll, Chopped Scallop Roll(Scallop was huge!), and any kind of Sashimi! Tempura was perfectly done, light batter and golden brown. The Vegetable Gyoza was good, but I should have gone with the Seafood Gyoza(what was I thinking?). I can't wait to come back and sample more of Toshi's delicious offerings! Hopefully the lineup won't be too long!

Authentic Japanese sushi has a home in Vancouver at Toshi Sushi.

I was one of the first to discover this restaurant while living in the neighbour hood and once I told 5 of my friends, within a few months it became a frenzy! I have eaten Sushi for the last 20 years and grow up eating lots of seafood in a coastal town in Vietnam, so I know the meaning of FRESH SEAFOOD.  I have tried many others and to be honest they do not stand out and are very mediocre, even the ones that are recommended on this site. I guaranteed if you order the Cod, Karage, or Chicken Teriyaki, you will be very happy, especially for such an affordable price! The innovative rolls like the popular House roll, where they do not cheap out on the avocados, nor the crab meat is a big hit too. Make sure you get there early, or have plan to have tea nearby when you wait,  (if you are willing to wait). In summer wait could be 1hr or longer and open for only dinner.

So thank you, my fellow Yelpers, for leading me to this glorious, secretive sushi spot. Having been thoroughly bored with the sushi places I've been going to, I decided to do some serious research before my next outing. It brought be me here.
The place is located just off of Main street, which had lots of cool restaurants and stores I'd never seen before. Now as for the wait, well, it was honestly no longer than 10 minutes, but I came on a Thursday night. They're only open from 5- 9:45, unless I'm mistaken, which is smart strategically, but it is quite a small time slot considering how busy it is.

Inside, it was very chic and modern, and there was a very hip, well dressed, equally chic crowd inside. My date and I were seated at a table with another couple, not wanting to wait too long. Try the eggplant, tuna with onion, house roll and spider roll. Aside from a roll that I constantly order by mistake and always dislike (the one with egg, spinach and tofu I think) everything was amazingly good. A tuna roll goes for about 3.50 here - a bit pricier than usual but worth it.

Excellent. Eaten there more than 30 times over the last few years.  The quality of sushi is excellent, and it is extremely good value.  The menu is varied.  I always bring people from out of town here to impress them with good west coast sushi and Toshi has never disappointed me.  They have long line ups though - between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours wait consistently every time.  We have a snack before we go.

You really can't go wrong here... I absolutely love everything that I have consumed here. Upon my last visit.... we were just finishing up... and feeling fully sated.... when we looked over at the table next to us. They had just received 2 orders of the "black cod". OMG, they were the largest pieces of black cod that I have ever seen served in any restaurant. Although we were bursting at the seams, we just HAD to order it. 15 mins later... our tasty dish arrived. It was phenomenal! Buttery, melt-in-your-mouth, perfection.

Although I gave this restaurant 5 stars - I have to admit that I'm not fond of the wait for a table. You know it's serious when the people line up before the restaurant is open... if not to get a table, then to put their name on the list. If there are only 2 of you, it may not be a very long wait. But for a group of more than 3, expect not to know when you are going to eat. I still haven't found the "right" time to go to the restaurant...and that is the reason that I don't always frequent Toshi's...sadly.

They don't take reservations, so make sure you know that you will probably be in for a long wait.
I used to live 4 blocks from this place so I would put my name on the list, go back to my place for a glass of wine and then return only to wait for another 30min.
This place is good, but in my opinion its not worth the wait. I do have a dirty little secret though, if you get their take out menu sometimes they answer their phone and you can order take out. They don't always answer (which means you are out of luck) but i've done it a bunch of times and it's a way better deal and time saver too!
The sashimi was top quality but the other things I had were pretty forgettable. Nevertheless, follow one of my tips and the experience will be worth it.

OK, we walked here today and TRAGICALLY!! they were closed (closed on Sundays and Mondays). We will be back Tues and Weds. night. I love this place: great, fresh sushi, spartan atmosphere and so, so, so worth the wait. I love the tight seating arrangement and how you are so close to those sitting at the next table that you can wink. It is in a great little neighborhood with some wonderful shops. I seriously dream of this place when I am back in the states....
***Just came back from here! Fantastic as usual! Huge, fresh, melt-in-your-mouth sushi. Wonderful veggie gyoza and a great sweet potato roll. The wait was only about 40 mins, enough time to walk the neighborhood and get some gelato on Main. Hours are: T-Sat 5:00-9:45.

This is a great vancouver find for sushi.
I have traveled all over the world and was visiting from Los Angeles. A visit to Yelp and talking to a local and I was off to Toshi.
They warned about a wait and I got a short one, but wow was it worth it.
The sushi was fresh and perfect sizes. Traditional Japanese food prepared and served by Japanese. (that means something to me).
The prices are very good and I would recommend you to travel a bit further to this place instead of settle for somewhere more convenient.

Enjoy your eating!!

If you want mind blowing sushi, follow these simple steps.

1. Eat a snack
2. Go to Toshi's and put your name on the waiting list.
3. Wait a really long time. Maybe bring cards or a book to keep you occupied. If you come hungry, you are screwed and may give up prematurely to eat somewhere that can seat you right away. If you do leave, other waiting patrons may just high five that you gave up your place, advancing their place on the waiting list.
4. Keep waiting. Stalk other patrons who are eating their meal and play a game with your date about which table will clear next.
5. They call your name! Skip to your table!

Now that you are finally seated, order the eggplant appetizer. It's baked and caramelized and oh so delicious. Also, order the sashimi. It's melt in your mouth fresh and delicious.

Service is good, but seating is tight. Do not come here with a large group or you'll never get seated. They don't take reservations, hence the ridiculous line up.

Closed on Sundays and Mondays. I hate Sundays and Mondays.

Small, busy and with interesting flavours... a very similar experience to Nippon itself!

If the long queue of hungry patrons out front is any indication, the food here is good. Authenticity has been key to sustaining its popularity; so while it's eternally crowded and always cramped, expect to be thoroughly sated post-facto.

As per its name, sushi dominates the menu. Salmon, mackerel, tuna, octopus, yellowtail and scallops are available daily and are nearly as fresh as the fare at Tsukiji Market. For those inclined towards food of the more cooked variety, there's the agemono section, as well as noodle dishes, salads and different donburi sets. Itadakimasu!

Always a crowd please, even if you are alone at the sushi counter. Order in for takeout boxes, or put your name on the list for a table. You won't be disappointed by the regular menu or the always exciting specials from this amazingly talented chef and his incredible staff.

I read the online reviews, took the advice, followed Toshi Sushi's rules.  My hubby and I arrived at 6:30pm on a Thursday night and put our names down on the waiting list.  We waited about 10 minutes and were able to get a table in the small restaurant.  The place was packed and more and more people came in and put their names down as we ate our dinner.

We ordered nabeyaki udon, tempura, grilled black cod, and an array of sushi, including toro, blue fin tuna, hamachi, uni, ikura with quail egg.  EVERYTHING was incredibly delicious and fresh, fresh, fresh.  This place was probably one of the best sushi restaurants we've eaten at.  The toro, hamachi and grilled black cod were melt-in-your-mouth delicious-ness.  My husband raved about the uni; he said it was fresh, rich, not a hint of fishiness.

The service was polite and prompt, and the presentation of the food great without being too fancy.  This place serves straight-up, basic, high quality sushi without the huge price tag.

Excellent sushi... high quality and at a reasonable price

This place is very packed and is very small so we ended up getting take-out so we could eat in the comfort of home.

I wasn't crazy about the cooked items, esp. the agedashi tofu. I've definitely had better agedashi tofu.... even here in Calgary.

I would say their strengths are in raw food (ie. sushi & sashimi) more than cooked food. I'd definitely go back to have the sushi again.

Delicious sushi, Toshi delivers top quality every time.  Line-ups are big, and they start early (before 5pm).  Take-out is an option, sometimes, though they don't always answer their phone, and when they do answer, they don't always take new orders.  Bit of a challenge to get your hands on it, but once you do, it's delicious.

If you want authentic japanese food, this is the place to go! The owner used to own Sushi Village up in Whistler until he retired to Vancouver and then opened up this little place after I assume retirement was ready for him. The cod is the one item I always order, so if I were to recommend something that would be it. I noticed it does sell out quite often, so I guess Im not the only one who thinks that way. Everything I have had here so far has been very good, so I think its pretty hard to go wrong with anything you order here. The only knock on this place is the wait... be prepared for a looooong wait as the place is small and patrons are many.

Most items ordered are excellent and Fresh. Especially try the Kanpachi (amber Jack)  and the big eye red tuna. Must also have the melt in your mouth toro. Cooked items are ok, try the roasted eggplant. Expect to wait 1/2 hour to 1 hour for a small table. It's a tiny restaurant. I reconize 2 of the chelfs used to work at Shijo on 4.
