After being stalked by Aaron at Toronto Home Movies via emails, a linkedin invitation and phone calls I decided to finally bring in my 20 reels of 8mm film.
After all that stalking, Aaron couldn't remember who I was. The customer area is cold and uninviting with the walls in disrepair. His tech knowledge of video was so so and he had to constantly refer to subject matter experts at the Mississauga location.
I called in to pick up my conversion stating I might be there 5 minutes past closing, could they wait. Answer was no cause they were eager to get home. I managed to get there before closing but with a sour taste in my mouth. Again, Aaron couldn't remember who I was.
I supplied my own hard drive because I wanted raw files I could edit. Unfortunately, all 20 reels were combined into one giant file. I spent over 2 hours splitting the file apart into 20 manageable chunks. The file quality is just ok. They've either over done the noise and scratch reduction resulting in a strong softening effect or have upconverted a lower resolution image. I don't know which scenario is correct. I'd rather have done the post processing myself.
Overall not a customer friendly experience and the quality of the output is average. If you use these guys be extremely specific about what you want and do not want and don't pay up if you don't get it.
