A wonderful find in Richmond. Partly owned and operated by Japanese master chef. Good consistency throughout with very good quality freshness in their sashimi/sushi. Kitchen items are just as good. The BBQ squid is our favorite.
Staff is excellent, with attentive service throughout each time I go. As it is Japanese owned, you'll find the typical but essential Japanese dishes there, but you'll also find some innovative creations, including Angry Bird, a rolled sushi with chicken karaage inside.
I had to make it four stars as they recently raised their prices, although it's still competitive compared to others. -

The wife and I was there for dinner. the fresh fish was amazing. The toro
Was awesome. The spicy tuna hand roll was the best I've ever had. Ted,Frank and staff made us feel welcomed. Parking is very easy. it's a private lot and there's no fees. -

We went looking for good seafood since we were so close to the water visiting in Canada and looked on trusty Yelp to head us in the right direction... as usual, we weren't disappointed. Started off with the Hamachi Sashimi (Yellowtail) - it was definitely different (more oily) than what we are used to getting in AZ, but oh soooo fantastic! Then we moved on to a local must have - Salmon! Had it 3 ways & it was delicious!
The service was very nice & prompt. The manager offered us a special treat at the end of our meal on the house... Green Tea & (believe it or not) Black Sesame ice cream. I was a fan of the Black Sesame (it kinda tasted like peanut butter) but my husband liked the Green Tea better.
Overall, the goal was met & we enjoyed some awesome seafood!
Nice find. -

This is one of my favourite japanese restaurants to go to in Richmond. The service is wonderful. The servers and chefs always greet you instantly upon arrival. The teapot is always filled quickly. Service is quick, and concise. The dreadful part is the PARKING LOT =(
My all time favourite roll to get is the Chopped Scallop and Tobiko Roll. I also love their Sockeye Salmon Sashimi and Saba. They have a selection of lunch boxes which include a main meat/fish, salad, miso soup, tempura, cali/salmon/tuna rolls, udon/bowl of rice etc. It's more than enough for one person. I usually share a lunch set and also order additional sashimi and rolls on the side.
This place is a happy median between quantity and quality. -

Crunch Munch Combo, Crunch Munch Combo please. Can I get a Crunch Munch Combo?
That's all I heard that day at Tororenbo. It's been awhile since I was here and my blood sugar was good and low and I was ready to have some serious sushi.
You see, having sushi is something I love, but try to avoid normally as it makes me wonky. Like getting drunk on too much scotch!
I had a driver with me so I didn't have to worry about driving.
I came prepared. And although this wasn't really my first choice, it was the only choice. It had to be here where I got my reintroduction to my roots.
Going through the menu, I had so many choices and had already decided on the items I was going to order.
Suddenly, all I could hear was that Crunch Munch Combo. Flipped the menu page over a few times and spontaneously went about to order that. Crunch.... Munch.... Combo...... And some other sushi dishes. "Oh, and do you think I ordered enough?" I asked. Ok. Hmmmm How about some Natto rolls and a Masago, make that two Masago and a Tobiko. Yes, I love Tobiko.
After we ordered, it was then that my favourite foodie pal asked me about why I ordered the extra and that wasn't I trying not to eat too much? (It's nice to know that she also has a lookout for my health when I eat at times. I love her so much)
The food came.
We looked at it
We devoured it.
It's always so busy here and the parking sucks, but today, we seemed to miss a bit of the crowd. Just in time.
Interestingly, here is where you can order in Japanese, English or Chinese and never skip a beat. Some of the dishes are what I would call real Japanese. Like Yamakake and Natto and so on.
I know that I would have been coming here more often if it werent' for the crazy parking and the lineups at dinner times.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Torarenbo is hardly a name that I can pronounce, let alone remember. However, my sister knew exactly what I was talking about when I described it by the dishes we had there last. mmm! We could hardly wait.
There are a number of great bento style lunch specials to choose from, but we chose to go a la carte aujourd'hui. We're glad we did that, cuz everything we ordered was exactly what we were craving for. The ika shiso roll was intensely fragrant and juicily textured, the chopped scallop and tobiko roll was super fresh, and the extra long avocado wrapped torarenbo roll drizzled with spicy tuna sashimi was a flavour party with every mouthful. An order of marinated spicy tuna sashimi to kick it all off was also oozing with fresh, saucy goodness.
We wish we'd seen the condensating plastic wrapped samples of tantalizing fish katsu and mini chirashi set lunches on the way in - We arrived super early (on Toronto time) and they were just setting up for lunch. For $8.50 and $10.50 respectively, these daily specials came with tempura, salad, miso soup, and sushi rolls. I have a feeling we'll be back again very soon. -

Best Japanese Restaurant I've been to in Richmond.
I generally shy away from Miso soup when I go for Japanese food because when its not done right it is horrible, however, I always try it once. The Miso here is so far from horrible, that I finish it every time I order something that includes it (if you knew me, you'd understand).
Their Mango California roll is a treat, boxes are good (crunch and munch is a favourite among colleagues) , and prices are reasonable given the quality of food.
Call ahead for a reservation in the evenings, or be ready for a wait. Three people on a busy night and it took 20 min to get seated at the bar, though I must say they did offer to squeeze us in on a reserved table, if we were willing to finish up within 30 minutes. -

This has been bookmarked on my list for awhile and perfect for dinner before a week straight of Mexican food!
4 stars - service is very good at this location and ample parking in the lot. The menu has a good selection - the fish isn't overly exotic but it is nicely prepared. We had the veggie tempura to start which was nice, hot and lightly battered. The rolls and sushi we had was nicely cut and prepared - unagi is less saucy than most, wild salmon is great, and the rolls including spicy salmon and the soft shell crab were very good.
It's one of the better places in Richmond and prices are great - we were stuffed and the bill was under $20 a person. -

Yummy well priced sushi right in the centre of Richmond. Came here slightly after the dinner rush. Parking was a nightmare though - the lot is shared with a number of other restaurants which are all pretty busy.
We sat at the sushi bar, but as soon as we did a bunch of tables left. At first service wasn't the best - they forgot to bring us tea and we just generally felt ignored right in centre of the restaurant with people rushing here and there, grabbing food. Once a couple of the bigger tables cleared out though, service got a lot better. Fast and polite.
We ordered the salmon sashimi, the fantastic roll which has mango and a number of other fish mixed in, the house roll and the spicy tuna. The sashimi felt a bit cold to me - maybe it was frozen? Its hard to say. I wasn't a big fan of the fantastic roll - it had too much fish roe on it which overpowered everything else in it. The house roll was good and I liked the spicy tuna. It was spicy, but not too overpowering.
Everything was well priced and service got better the longer we were there. Will definitely be back.Listed in: Japanese Galore

We've been trying to find a place as affordable (and delicious) as Sushi Garden since moving to Richmond... and Torarenbo is it!! The value isn't as good as Sushi Garden, but the improvement in quality is well worth it!
The fish tasted fresher and the toro sashimi literally melted in my mouth like smooth butter (vs. Sushi Garden where the toro was often still partially frozen or too cold). Sashimi temperature is as important as its freshness and Torarenbo got both right.... EVERY TIME!!
Oyster motoyaki's are delicious and our favorite rolls are the Mango California Roll and Dragon Roll.
The service is also excellent for such a busy restaurant. Free ice cream if your meal comes to over $40 before tax (just ask politely). Just make sure you make reservations and arrive a bit early to find parking (their parking lot sucks).
Highly recommended for those who don't want to make the trek out to Burnaby for Sushi Garden. This place is well worth it on any day of the week (or any time for that matter). -

Other than bad service, which you can expect from Richmond, Torarenbo could be the best sushi place in Richmond. Ichiro in Steveston has good noodles, but it's so far. Torarenbo used to have a lobster set dinner for two, I'm not sure if they have it anymore, but it's the best. You get a fair amount for $75, and they give you this lobster udon in soup at the end cooked in a clay pot and it's really good. Their california rolls are like no other, I think they might use real crab meat. They have a mango roll that's basically a california roll with mango and it's amazing. They're really cheap though. Once I went with my brother, and the bill came to $19.90, and they wouldn't give us free ice cream because that only comes if the bill is over $20. So I told the manager that with tip, it's over $20. He still rejected us. Then he brings us a tiny scoop of green tea ice cream with TWO spoons; it was such an insult. But solely based on food, they are 4 star. Based on food and service...maybe 2.5-3.

One of the rare a la carte Japanese restaurants in Richmond. As well, they have Japanese sushi chefs too.
This place always has good service, fresh food, and reasonable prices. I like it here because their lunch bento boxes are pretty awesome. Comes with miso soup, and my usual sashimi set also comes with tempura (perfectly battered) and sushi. The green salad, which is also included comes with the perfect Japanese salad dressing.
Always fills me up. They also serve you real green tea here, which is always a bonus to any Japanese restaurant. Their mango california roll is also quite yummy too.
Parking at this small strip mall is very limited, and there's a couple of designated spots right outside the place. If not, park on the street, but remember, it's pay parking until 9pm! -

Torarenbo is a very popular lunch spot close to Richmond Centre. It's no wonder there are a lot of regulars, since it serves generous -- almost too big -- lunch specials for very cheap. A bowl of udon starts just north of $5, a 3-roll combo is about $9 and a ginormous "sushi special" with the typical servings of maki, tempura, miso, salad, etc. is just $12.95.

In terms of value for money, I don't think Torarenbo cuts it. But the sushi is well made - holds together well and fits into your mouth. Edamame was a little over blanched. Sockeye salmon sashimi was good. I like the hit of wasabi but it was kind of wet for my liking. We left insatiated which hardly ever happens after a good sushi meal.

Very good - large portions, reasonably priced. Large parking lot so shouldn't be a problem. They have baby chairs. Service was fast. There's no charm or real atmosphere here, but does the job well.

My mom and I have lunch here every Saturday and thoroughly enjoy the food, the staff are tops, and very affordable. Their soft shelled crab is the best - frank, Gerry, jojo and Wendy are first rate! We come here weekly because they make us feel so at home. - Linda and Tina
