Review from Simon K.
Not your typical Chinese restaurant due to the fact the morning operations are for dim sum, and the night operations are for hot pot. That being said, I love coming to both. One of the best hot pot places in the Lower Mainland. I will start with the hot pot side, it is pricier than other places, but just the sauce cart alone when starting the meal deserves praise. From your satays, to peanut sauce, to extra garlic, soy and sesame to name a few, they roll this cart around to your table before the food gets there, and you decided what magical brew of dip you would enjoy for the night feast. The seating here is pretty good, the tables, whether they are the booths, or the long tables are a good size for everyone to crowd around the boiling pot and dip all their chopsticks and raw munchies into!
I find the meat selection here pretty fresh, regarldess of what type of meat you order (various beefs, lamb, pork, chicken) they are done well, and presentable when they hit the table. Good portions too, when coming out, the servers here are good at recommending how much would be a good order. A good abundance of all your favorite hot pot dishes to order, with a few extras, like fried fish skin, sticky rice, and other cooked foods to accompany your All You Can Eat feast. As I said, the AYCE is a little bit more pricier than the ones you would normally go to, but you are paying for the Top Gun name, and the quality here, this is no hole in the wall, this is a real restaurant, which sometimes watches the clock of your '2 hour' eating time.
Shifting to "dim sum' time, they do not have a great variety, they have you standard 'har gow' and 'sui mai' but if your looking for the crazy varieties, and new age plates of other restaurants, they may not have it. Saying that they don't have variety doesn't mean it is not good, the food dishes here are solid, each one flavourful and piping hot when it arrives at your table. The other thing to note here is that each individual at the table picks out their own individual tea, at the front door when you enter, you can sniff each one, everyone has their preference and this helps sometimes.
Because this is part of the "Top Gun" group of restaurants, if your a member of the card program, you get some special discounts, like before 11:30 (I think it is, or is it before 11) you get 40% off dim sum (there dim sum is not cheap, let me add). Also you get 10% off their hot pot, and collect points. They are located in Crystal Mall, and usually are packed throughout the day, make reservations, yet you still may be waiting a little if you are in the middle of the pack. -

I was just turned away from Top Gun. I'm traveling for business, and was told that "we're all-you-can-eat only and the minimum is party of two".

Review from Lisa T.
I've been here a few times for hot pot and once for dim sum. Tonight, it was hot pot night.
As always, service was average. The food was pretty good. We had the satay soup base this time. All their meats, seafood and veggies looked very fresh. You can choose your own dipping sauce, and mix and match, which is almost the best part of why I like hot pot. Almost. There's always the key staples that complete my hot pot meal: the taro vermicelli, tong ho veggie, the fresh chinese mushrooms, the mutton and the oysters. Their list of items is quite extensive, but not overwhelmingly so. I was not disappointed, but really, all the kitchen staff have to do is serve the ingredients fresh.
The price is pretty average for an all you can eat place. You're looking to spend an average of $30pp after tips and tax. I had the gold card too, which gave our table an extra 10% off. If it's a hot pot night out, this is one of the places I would first consider.
[ The gold card is a points and discount card that can be used at their Top Gun Group restaurants. It can give you anywhere between 10% to 40% off at certain restaurants during different times throughout the day. It is also a points card as well, so depending on how much you spend, you receive a certain number of points. For more details, visit http://topgungroup.com.... When I bought it last year, it cost me $20, but with 40% off the dim sum bill, that discount pretty much covered the cost of the card. I'm not sure if the price has changed, but it's definitely worth checking out. ] -

My grandparents come here quite often for dimsum. They have a pretty good discount if you get the bill and get out by 11am. If you're just looking for decent food and cheap prices, it isn't bad. The service ranges from being okay to horrendous.
There is one particular lady who likes to hassle people into hurrying their order and then getting you out as soon as possible. I understand they want to turn over tables, but there isn't any reason for outright rudeness. If you just want cheap food, it's worth a try. But there are better options in the area. -
Review from Melody P.
My sister and I got up 5 in the morning and drove to Top Gun Burnaby for their Dim Sun. The reason why we were this early was because my sister bought their discount card. If we pay before 11AM, we will get 40% off from the bill, which is a good deal!
In my opinion, the selections for Dim Sum were limited. I was a little bit disappointed. We ordered the "chicken feet" and found out the chicken feet they have is not the traditional chicken feet with black fermented beans, bean paste, and soy sauce. (http://en.wikipedia.or...)
However, they have really good "Baked BBQ Pork Buns". It was really good. And it was fresh out of the oven too. The sweet and salty combination is the best! -

Friendly service and great food
My first hot pot experience. Two of us, neither who knew the first thing about all you can eat hot pot. The staff seemed to know we were novices, and provided incredibly helpful suggestions, told us when were were ordering whether we had ordered too much or too little, suggested we try things we might otherwise have missed, and made it an overall fun dining experience.
Now if I could just figure a way to eat hot pot without coming home with stains all over my shirt it would be perfect. Honest - I'm not usually a sloppy diner. -
Review from Allen C.
Dim sum at Top Gun is great especially when you have the 20% top gun gold card. I like the personal touch each patron gets when they get to pick their own choice of tea leaves for tea. I am a fan of their specialty BBQ pork buns with the pastry on top (the queen's bun) By far a better dim sum experience than most other places.

This review is just for dim sum. And I didn't get hit in the head, if you read the other reviews, you'll know that it's "Top Gun Hot Pot's" own fault by not calling itself "Top Gun Hot Pot at Night and Dim Sum in the Morning".
That's how this place lost 3 stars. That's right, lost. Yes, three. Count them with me, shall we?
Nah I'm joking. It lost its first star because the food is not that awesome. Although they did do some of the Siu Mai and braised beef with some weird noodle thing well, the rest of it was so sloppy.
Then they lost a star for their poor-mediocre service. The servers were not pleasant, which is OK. I get that, cause it's dim sum and they have loads of tables. But they didn't bring our last dish until well after we were done everything else and had even paid our bill. (Btw, the last dish was a chicken with this shroom thing, which was just OK and not worth the EXTREME delay).
And finally they lost another star because their set-up is weird and uncomfortable. We got seated in their comfy big chairs but it was a bitch trying to share food because we were literally two feet away from each other. There's a reason why dim sum tables are round. There's a reason to the design. Last but not least, the air con was non-stop and I needed to put on a jacket half way through and it chilled all our food and tea too fast.
Oh, and before I forget, I gained half a star back by having strange menu items that are unique (although nothing really special of everything I've tried). And they got another half star back for having some discount thing when you have a membership card.
I guess since I don't have the membership card, my dim-sum company does, I won't be tempted to really go out of my way to eat there especially since you have to pour your own tea and frankly, I don't have the co-ordination to mess with that kinda work so early on a weekend. -

Ever since I picked up a Top Gun gold card from eating at Kingsway Sushi all the time, I've been coming here more and more. This place is fabulous for a number of reasons:
1. The food
If you want your regular run of the mill dim sum at cheap prices, this is not the place. But if you're looking for something a bit more interesting, something a bit more exciting, then you should give this a try. My favourite dishes are the deep fried shrimp rolls (they're not like any shrimp rolls you've ever had, seriously), and the deep fried squid. The steamed turnip cake with beef brisket is also delish!
2. The tea
This is the only place I've been to so far that allows patrons to have individual tea selections. That means everyone can order their own tea leaves and can steep for as long as they want. I'm picky when it comes to tea flavours, so this is huge plus in my books.
3. The discounts
The place is great on its own, but with the Gold Card it just sweetens the deal. Despite the fact the card sets you back $20 annually, you can use it at any of their Top Gun locations for various discounts. In this case, if you pay your bill before 11am your dim sum is 60% off. After that, it's 80% with the card. Seriously a good deal.
I love this place, but it gets busy fast. It may be a good idea to call ahead of time to book a table. But if you go, seriously: the deep fried shrimp rolls. You will not be disappointed.Listed in: Dim Sum!

I'm not sure what to think about Top Gun during dimsum hours... Everything is fresh and tasty enough, but if it weren't for the individual tea selections, I'm not sure why I would come here with so many other options a stone's throw away. Don't get me wrong, this place is more than adequate and you'll be satisfied by the food, decor, and service.
While the menu is quite small compared to most dimsum spots, what they offer is tasty and as my dad decided to remind me of... You can tell how good the chef is by the thickness of the skin on the har gow and the overall appearance and taste of the sui mai. If that's all it were about, the har gow (shrimp dumpling) and sui mai (pork and shrimp dumpling) tell me that the chef knows his stuff. Thanks, dad!
The servers were generally quite helpful and pleasant. This isn't the case at a bunch of dimsum places. So that's definitely a plus.
Anyway, Maverick and Goose... While I would return, it wouldn't be my first selection in the neighbourhood.
Can someone also find a way to fix that horrid parking lot in Crystal Mall? I feel like I'm heading right into the danger zone. -

I used to come here all the time, back when there were very little hot pot places. Problem with Top Gun is its expensive and the food isn't anything to write home about, but it was still good eats.
The dish servings aren't so large and the prices can really add up. So what did we used to do? Come after 9pm for their late night specials! I'm not sure if its still being offered, but its a really good deal and the only reason we came to Top Gun. Its an all in deal good for about 2-3 people worth of food: meats, veggies and dumplings. I think the soup was extra. I really like their spicy soup and herbal soup, they always had good soup.
What I really love here above all other hot pots is that they come around with the sauce cart and its filled with ingredients to put into your sauce. I just ask for everything and they don't skimp out. I love the sauce here. The cart has ingredients other hot pots don't. Soy sauce, peanut sauce, chili oil, chopped garlic, sesame oil, fresh cilantro, green onions and so much more! GO SAUCE CART!
Oh and they have bottomless chrysanthemum tea, YES!
PRICE: Unless you're here for the late night special which is a decent deal, its too expensive here for what you get. Its the same quality as AYCE, I think if you're gonna charge per dish your dishes should be of a much higher quality.
SERVICE: Generally not the best. Once you've got your dishes it takes forever to get anything else during the day. But late night, its quiet so your complimentary chrysanthemum tea stays full.
SUGGEST: The only reason I would come here would be for the chrysanthemum tea I keep chugging or the excellent dipping sauce I get. Unfortunately with all these really good hot pots that have sprouted up, I don't see myself coming here anymore. Its just too expensive. -

I had a lot of fun! It might have been the people I was with, but I am sure that if we had mediocre service, we'd know.
I've been here once before, but that was for dim sum. My friends and I hadn't seen each other in a couple months. We wanted all you can eat. We wanted lots of meat. I wanted to go to Posh, but was vetoed out because they would rather have stuff cooked in broth than sauce. I thought my friend had made reservations for seven people at seven. Nope. Luckily, it wasn't busy on a Wednesday night and we got to go in right away. Since there was seven of us, we had two tables with an empty table between us. I am guessing it is because the burners were specially placed underneath the fans, so the empty table made it look like we were sitting at one big table instead of two separate ones.
After reading over the sheets, we scribbled little numbers beside what we wanted and away we go. They brought out the broth really fast, I have no idea what kind it was because my friends did the ordering. Plate after plate of meat, bowl after bowl of veggies, they all got dumped into the boiling pot of broth.
The servers were really fast and helpful. We ordered the wrong kind of meat. When we realized, the servers took it away and brought us what we meant to order. They refilled our waters. They kept asking if we were okay. There is a two hour time limit. I am not sure if it's from when you sit down or when you order. But the same goes for all the restaurants in the Top Gun family. Oh and if you get a Gold Card with them, you get like 10% off.
This place is great! I would definitely come back for more. -

I've been to Top Gun before and my experience wasn't good so I thought I would give them another try. I went for Hot Pot 2 days ago. The food is not bad, but combined with the price and terrible customer service, I won't be going back. I know that it is tiring to work in the restaurant/food industry, but the staff really killed my mood. This is already lowering my expectations with the service because I knew the service is bad.
Also wanted to point out that 4 people in our group got stomach aches the next day after hot pot as well. -

This is part of the Top Gun group, which also operates Top Gun Dim Sum in Richmond (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...). The dim sum offerings at this location are quite similar sans the distracting Japanese options, which are skipable at the Richmond location. I find the "little touches" at the Richmond location slightly better though.
Parking: Parking at the Richmond location stinks. You frequently have to park in a shopping centre nearby and risk a ticket. Parking at this location is fairly rough on the weekends in the circular mazes called Crystal Mall parking. But this location is also easily accessible to skytrain, and I opted to not park. This option isn't available for the Richmond location. +1 for Burnaby
Reservations: Both locations accept reservations. Richmond seems better about honouring them. I have always been given a table exactly at the reserved time in Richmond. We had a 15 minute wait here. +1 for Richmond
Tea: Both locations have a very wide variety of teas and let each person at the table have their own choice. But bonus points to Richmond for the candle heated stands to keep the hot water hot. This location gives a big metal kettle, which didn't keep the water as hot. +1 for Richmond
Atmosphere: Richmond feels like a small modern HK spot with the flat screen TVs playing random sporting events or Chinese opera with the sound turned off. This location feels like a hot pot restaurant. +1 for Richmond
Dim sum: The quality of the items was comparable. Tie
Details:
- Hargow had large plump shrimp that had a nice crunch to them. The wrapper was delicate, and overall a very good rendition. Check.
- Chicken feet were perfectly done. They were still tender, instead of the rubbery props you sometimes get at other places. The meat was easy to pull off the bones, and was simmered in a flavourful sauce. Check.
- Deep-fried squid was overcooked. While the chicken feet were not rubbery, all rubbery tendencies were reallocated to the deep-fried squid. This was really a misfire from the kitchen. You could not bite through the large tentacles. So you had to stuff very large tentacles into your mouth and then chew for a good minute or two to finally break them down. This dish was definitely not a winner.
- Beef brisket and tendon hotpot. This is actually not a hot pot, it was more of a claypot. the beef and tendons had a pleasant citrus hint, and were served over rice rolls that absorbed the delicious sauce. This was perhaps my favourite dish. The only drawback is that there was very little tendon. But still, this dish was a Check Plus.
- Gailan with oyster sauce. Perfectly done. Still crisp, yet fully cooked. Check Plus
- Mushroom and beef rice roll. The wrapper was the perfect consistency, and the fillings were well seasoned. They poured a bit too much sauce on top, so that after it sat for a while it got salty. But the first few bites were excellent. Check
- Beef balls. These were slightly oversteamed, but still very flavourful. They cut orange peel into the meat to give a nice citrus flavour to it. The yuba skins that it was sitting on top of, soaked up the delicious flavours as well. Check
- Pan-fried eggplant. This was served with a generous amount of shrimp on top that was perfectly crunchy. The shrimp counter balanced the eggplant perfectly. Check plus
I am forgetting a few other dishes we had, but you get the drift. Generally a very good job, and for Burnaby I think this is the best dim sum I have had in the area. I would still choose the Richmond branch though if I didn't mind traveling. Since I live in Vancouver, Richmond will most likely win out though....Listed in: Vancouver Chinese Food, Vancouver Dumplings, Crystal Mall

I had the hot pot tonight and I am not coming back.
Things started out a bit poorly, when we had to wait 15 minutes... but were seated before anyone had left the restaurant. We sat down not sure why it took 15 minutes to clear a table, if that was what the wait was for. We ordered and the food came. The selection was similar to competing places, and the food all looked quite fresh. The veggies were a bit too fresh... as it came with a rather large bug. I'm generally not a complainer but I'm a bug-phobe and so I politely alerted the hostess (as I couldn't manage to flag anyone down) and soon the manager came to my table and apologized abruptly (I got the impression this isn't uncommon) and took the plate with the bug and I asked to change my soup. The eating carried on from there, but through the entire meal, not once did they come fill up our soup-water when it reduced too much, nor did we have anyone come by to clear our dishes, nor did anyone come up to fill up our tea or cold water. I put some effort into getting a server's attention, but we gave up eventually and we ended up just using our glasses of water to fill up our soup. We were also near one of the 'stations', and there were a few bussers/servers behind us loudly talking amongst themselves using a noticeable amount of profanity, which also turned me off the place.
I didn't expect stellar service and being a non-complainer, I might be out of line for expecting this, but I would have thought that we would get 'extra service attention' since we obviously were not super thrilled with our meal. Barring that, I half hoped that something (perhaps the $7.50 soup) would get comp'd or we would get some sort of 'special thing for next time' since they obviously weren't out to make our present experience any better, but that wasn't the case.
Considering the prices here are overall ~25% higher than competing hotpot places (Fatty Cow and Chubby Lamb come to mind), I found the service and attitude worse, and the food quality/selection not noticeably better. I'm sticking with others. -

Special dim sum and traditional tea.
Food: Although the name is Top Gun Hot Pot, this is a Hot Spot (hehe, get it?) for dim sum in the Burnaby neighbourhood if you're looking for something more special. Top Gun has special dishes that cannot be found at Kirin or Sun Sui Wah. They execute well with a smaller menu and fresh ingredients.
Tea: If you're looking to give your guest a Chinese experience, you will be able to here. Tea is served traditionally. This means that you order the leaves and clean them and steep them yourself. It doesn't sound like much but it's kinda fun if you ask me :P
Service: Quick and reliable. The staff turnover here has been low meaning that I usually get the same reliable wait staff who are attentive and quick, just like the ones in Hong Kong (loves it!).
Ambiance: Comparable to Kirin, although not as fancy.
Parking: Located in Crystal Mall (the Chinese mall next to Metrotown, if there was an award for the worst designed parking lot in the new millennium it would definitely go to this mall), parking can be a biotch. Sometimes there are old grandparents driving that get stuck in the corner and before you know it you're waiting for years in your caravan wondering if you'll ever get your char sui bow. Just be patient, don't be racist *thumbs up*
Caudee notes: Reservations recommended. Good place to have lunch if you're looking to do some grocery shopping after (downstairs in the mall).Listed in: Do Da Dim Sum La

Review from Larry L.
It was ok. Jen used to eat here alot and since Fatty Cow was booked solid we'd thought to come back here again. Back to our roots of many years ago.
They brought out the wrong soup and gave us spicy for both soups. That' didn't make sense and even for her, it took some explanation to get what we wanted to order. She speaks Chinese, I don't.
After that challenge, it was all ok. We got our food, our drinks and that was that.
Nothing to really write home about, except that it brought back memories for us. Good memories that may just yet rekindle a spark that seemed to have been long forgotten.
Besides that, we realized that the cost of the meal here has gone up quite a bit since it first opened up.
other than that. It's a place to come back to and relive more memories of yet to come.Listed in: HOT POTS!!!

I try not to read all of the other reviews before posting mine because I don't want to feel that I need to change how I feel about this place. So as part of my Canada vacation, my cousin and friends took me to Hot Pot. Til this day, I still have not found one worthy of this place. (if you know of a hot pot like here PLEASE TELL ME!!! and in California).
Its $21.95 a person, which i get is pretty expensive, but really worth it. You are given a menu of all the items to choose from such as meats, seafood, veggies etc and its all you can eat. So you pretty much are getting your monies worth. You are given a pot that is divided in the middle and you are asked what kind of broth you want in the water to cook the food in. There is also a lady that walks by with a cart with different kinds of dipping sauce you want to dip your meat in.
Also what i love about Canada, is that if you are in a big group, they will do separate checks as opposed to every where else in the US where they say "oh we can only take 2 cards" or "we can't do separate checks cause its going to mess us up" If Canada can do it, then the USA can too. -
Review from Katy N.
For $21.95 all you can eat HOT POT and they sure have a lot of selections; however, be careful cuz some items weren't FRESH!! I do love the option of having 2 different soup base.

Review from Min H.
I came to Vancouver as it was the second stop of my amazing family vacation/mini-reunion this summer. My friend was meeting up with her sister and her friends when my brother and I tagged along for lunch.
We went for dim sum lunch on a Sunday afternoon so I don't really know anything about the hotpot selection. The place is located in a shopping mall so at first it doesn't seem too impressive, however parking in the underground garage is free so it's a bit of a wash.
The menu was all in Chinese so we relied on the others to order the food. I'm not sure how parties without Chinese readers would fare but the food that was ordered was delicious. My favourite was a desert bun that was fill with sugary, runny egg yolk. The yolk portion tasted exactly like cake batter. There were plenty of food for the 7 of us (and leftovers) and thanks to the VIP card, it was only $70 some for the entire meal. -
Review from Jenna L.
I am a Top Gun chain fan all the day! (at least two of their locations in Richmond and Crystal Mall in Burnaby)
I made the reservation 20 minutes before arrival. I know it sounds ridiculous but it's better than waiting longer at the door without one. I believe I skipped at least two -three groups.
Anyways, back to the food, I only had dimsums in the afternoon so I cannot comment on hotpot. The menu is somewhat different than the Richmond locations but the staple items like baked BBQ bun is the same. I ordered pan fried shrimp mean with tofu skin, deep friend stuffed eggplants and tofu, flat noodle with egg white and shrimp?, siu mai, sticky rice wrap, and fish congee. The portions are more than enough for three of us! Everything was fresh and hot. Their fish congee was better than the richmond one as it had actual fish slices, not fish filet.
The service was so much better than that of typical Chinese restaurants. The girl who served our table was curteous and always smiling! -

Came here for late night hot pot with a bunch of my friends once. We had about 15 people or so, and I definitely do not recommend it.
Though the sauces and soup bases are definitely a plus, the orders came very slowly. The food wasn't bad and there were choices even for a vegetarian. The meat seemed to look pretty fresh.
The service here is bad. All the workers there are grouchy, unwelcoming, and you need to find your waiter/waitress and call them over to order more things. The waitress we had kept giving us bad looks. They also constantly rushed us to pay.
It was pretty overpriced at about 27 dollars per person, especially with service like that. Will not come back. -

Burnaby Top Gun Hotpot at Chrystal Mall: I give this place -10000000000 for service. i can't think of a place that has worse service. i actually dined here 3 times and all 3 times i received horrible service. one of those times i came here for my bf's birthday dinner - thought all you can eat hot pot was a good idea - and the reservation was made for 30 people. They gave us 2 tiny tables and expected us to all sit cramped in that small space. we complained and they DID NOT CARE. there was another EMPTY table next to ours and we asked why we couldnt take that one and they refused to give it to us. we asked how we can fit 30 ppl on 2 small tables and they said we can. WTF. they didnt even give us enough chairs and we asked if we can at least have extra chairs and they said o sorry only enough chairs for 14 people. WTF. seriously. we ended up having to sit separately and split up. some ppl sat on their own in booths far away. we were all pissed to the max. the last and the final time we went there we few days ago - my bf and i were craving for hot pot and we did not want to drive to richmond. we knew they have bad service but thought.. it can't be that bad this time. BIG MISTAKE. We made reservations for 8:15 (we wanted 8 but they said only 8:15 available). and the guy calls 5 minutes later and confirmed and we said yes we're on our way. we showed up on time and the really bitchy waitress they have there goes "sit there and wait" not even please, or it'll be a few minutes. so we wait. and wait. and wait. The place is not even busy, and there is no one else waiting. we ask, how long is this going to be? the bitchy waitress says "oh someone is payin the bill". what bill. we don't see anyone paying the bill. 35 minutes pass and i ask the bus boy how much longer. he says he doesnt know, but he'll get the manager. well, the manager never showed. i was so fed up. we were hungry. after 45 minutes, i couldnt take it any longer. i blew up at the lady at the front askin her what time it is. 45 minutes!! we friggin waited for 45 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!! i asked her what is the point of takin reservations if they're goin to make us wait neways. like seriously!! i have never been so angry at a restaurant before in my life. they probably gave our table away but we werent even late. dont go there. they're jerks.
