Review from Nicey J.
One of the best cupcake places on the east coast, PERIOD.
Every cupcake I've ever had from here was amazing, and I've had my fair share. it's amazing how many cupcakes I've had from tonnies minis having never stepped foot in the door, it's also amazing how many I've had brought to my home ( all the way in philly!) I suppose you have to be a pretty special customer to have cupcakes delivered from NYC to Philly. ( Thanks Kim for being a superb employee and helping make my cupcake dreams come true 2 hours away )
I'll leave you with this, any cupcake you try will be amazing, the red velvet will change your life, as will the carrot cake. BAM! -

Nothing worse then a dry cupcake. I won't name names, but good thing Tonnie's is not like that at all.
Its always reliably moist cupcakes. Frosting is good although sometimes a little too sweet. But hand frosted to order. This is my first time here since they moved uptown from West 3rd. Still moist. So yeah. Moist.
Skip the banana pudding though. Not good. -

H and I were at an event and Tonnie's so happened to be there and whoever was the man that was doing the promoting was really creepy and weird.
He asked us about our work and we said you have to belong in the industry in order to be here at this event.
He's like you have a table here.
We said, yes and then he asked where are you guys sitting?
We said we have a table, but we're not sitting anywhere.
He's like do you guys ever go Uptown?
We're like...not really.
He's like okay, where are you guys at then?
We're like Downtown.
He's like...okay, you know we can deliver to you guys.
Umm....seriously, all these questions and his point was what?
Delivery service?
He was mumbling and talking under his breath the entire time.
He's so whack!
The Red Velvet mini wasn't really good, the regular one was better tasting, but not good enough for me to trek all the way to Harlem. -

First off let me say that I am not a big on sweets, except when I go here. Try the red velvet and fall in love and buy another one. It tastes exactly like your taste buds want red velvet to taste.

I've been going to Tonnie's since it's Village days and I was more than excited when it moved around the corner from me in Harlem. However, it seems the company has gone totally Hollywood as the lines are long and the service has declined. To make matters worse the last 3 times I have attempted to buy cupcakes I have been unable to because either a) they failed to tell me their card machines were down until after I'd waited in line (even though I'd called previously on one occasion), had my cupcakes prepared and was ready to pay or they were filming for some tv spot. While their cupcakes are moist, I'm over this place.

Yum, Yum, Yum! I have been on a search for the best cupcakes in Manhattan and my search led me to Harlem to try Tonnie's. What a delight! I got the prepackaged dozen of mini cupcakes with an assortment of flavors. The cupcakes were so delicious that I ate half of the carton on the first day. The red velvet, carrot and lemon cupcakes were the standouts. Soooo good!

"You could be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I don't wanna wake up from...
My Sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Somebody pinch me, your love's too good to be true
My guilty pleasure, I ain't going no where
Baby long as you're here
I'll be floating on air
'Cause you're my
sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I don't wanna wake up from you......."
Who knew Beyonce felt the same way I do about Tonnie's Minis? Ok fine, she was probably singing about Jay-Z, but these lyrics can easily be used to express my enthusiasm for these cupcakes.
In a neighborhood filled with sub-par, ashy and disrespectful sweet offerings (::looks in Make My Cake's direction::), and slightly overpriced yet delicious delicacies (::winks at Levain::,) Lies Tonnie's, a beacon of hope to my sweet tooth!
It's like this;
You choose the size of your cupcake (Mini, Regular or Large)
You choose the flavor of your cupcake
You choose the icing for your cupcake
It's kinda like playing dress up with your dessert. The reward? A delicious and wallet friendly cupcake that's moist and made just to your liking. Is it the best cupcake i've ever had? No, but for the price and in an area where there isn't a good cupcake in sight, this is definitely a treat. This place is must if you happen to be in the Harlem area and you're jonesing for a cupcake sans pretentious attitude...or attitude at all since everyone here is pretty nice. Come thru like Kung-Fu and get you one of these cupcakes!Listed in: Let me call you…

Tonnie, you've won my heart.
Cupcakes? In the middle of Harlem? And it's amazing? I want to come back to the same place twice? I'll stop putting question marks after statements?
It was Superbowl Sunday. My job was to obtain desserts for 11 people. Cupcakes came to mind. So I yelped. Got to Tonnie's, which was a bit out of place: so quaint and cute.
Me: Can I get a dozen mini's?
Lady Behind Counter: Sure, assorted?
Me: Yeah, whatever your heart desires.*
Moments later:
Me: What's the difference between the Californias and Hollywoods?
Californias: big cupcakes.
Hollywoods: BIGGER cupcakes.
Me: Can I get 4 Californias?
LBC: Which flavors would you like?
Me: Whatever YOU like.** (with a wink***)
Desserts that night were the best part of Superbowl Sunday (yes, better than fried chicken and corn bread).
If you haven't zoned out by this part of the review, just get this: STRAWBERRY TWIST. It's like a strawberry shortcake, except in mini cupcake form. Moist, strawberry infused golden sponge cake. And of course, red velvet. But RV's are overrated nowadays.
*Paraphrased, might not have actually said that.

I stopped by for some cupcakes after seeing a friend on FB tag herself to this spot. I never even heard of it before so after reading the reviews I wanted to check it out. The establishment looks like they're still settling in and havent completely finished decorating. I had no clue what to get so I ordered 1 dozen mini assortment for $13. The mini cupcakes are really delicious. My favorite are the red velvet and carrot. I will definitely return.

I ordered a cake and cupcakes for my wedding. I paid in advance and called 3 times leading up until the event. The delivered the wrong cake but by the time we realized it, it was too late. I gave them detailed instructions to keep the the cake and cupcakes with a clean look. I was so disappointed when I saw my wedding tier. Normally, this would not be a big deal but this was for my wedding which I told them many times. Shitty cake/cupcakes for our nice Del Frisco's reception. Lesson learned, don't go to Tonnie's for special events. Service leading up was blah (i.e. long holds).

I was once a recovering cupcakaholic, until I tasted Tonnie's. I still remember our first time together, like it was yesterday (read: last Tuesday). It was at a friend's birthday get together and the cupcakes sat on a platter looking so unassuming. It was after the other party goers raved about the cupcakes that I decided to try. The first one I tasted was the strawberry. The taste was POWERFUL and shockingly sweet. I next tried the lemon and it took me to new heights. I knew from that moment on that no cupcake would ever be enough or take me to such a depth of satisfaction.
Moist, flavorful, delicious, sweet... I could go on forever with the adjectives. The most important part... I habitually eat any flour based desserts with a glass of milk... cookies, cupcakes, cakes, pie, etc. Tonnie's is the only cupcake where I don't need to milk to moisten my palate with each bite, rather the cupcakes is sufficiently moist that milk is neither needed nor missed. -

Cute cupcake shop that caters to making your one of a kind cupcake....
Unfortunately it did not hit the spot for me as the frosting was way too sweet for me (esp the strawberry) and not as CRAZY good as people had made it seem like.
The cake itself was not dry and perfectly moist though....

Review for cupcakes
Cupcakes are pretty moist. You get to pick your base and pick your cream, then whatever topping you want, if you chose to have one.
They are very careful to separate their nuts, so people with nut allergies are not effected by it.
I really like their banana with cream cheese frosting.
Oh! and they have little mini size ones, regular size ones and large size for whatever your preference is.
As a tip: they have whipped cream as a frosting choice. It melts fast, so eat it immediately! (Of course, it's so delicious that it would naturally be gone in a blink of an eye. ) -

Excellent cupcakes. Usually when I want cupcakes I head to make my cake on 116th. But not anymore , I'm shopping here from now on. There cupcakes are moist and delicious. Another thing I enjoy is that you have options deciding the flavor ,frosting, and toppings. Besides a girl can not ever have to many options when it comes to her sweets.

After reading the rave reviews for this place I bookmarked it and planned to go...then fate threw me a bone. In the wee hours of morning duringy insomnia from working midnights a Groupon popped up. It was Kismet. What time do they open? Crap I have a few more hours, it's not even daybreak.....kids are off to school....oh yeah cupcake time!!
The M60 goes from the corner of my house to the corner of Tonnies Minis...who could ask for an easier ride? My brother thinks I'm nuts to cross a county line and a bridge for cupcakes but he has yet to taste them....more on that later...
If I didn't have the address, I probably would have missed the place because it's onset off the street on the ground floor of a brownstone building. ATM conveniently located right at their door and 3-4 little bistro tables in the breezy gate. The happy dude behind the counter was shocked to see a groupon holder so early in the morning and agreed I was pretty hard core for cupcakes on a Monday!
And then the cupcakes.... Red velvet, golden heart, chocolate kiss, carrot cake, lemon, strawberry (two of each of course) and a very berry rounded out my bakers dozen. I Nom nom'd on the very berry in the breezy gate before catching the bus back home and I was in heaven! The happy dude frosted them right in front of me (how's that for freshness!) and topped some with red velvet crumbles and the carrot cake with chopped nuts. Perfect!
He reminded me they also do cakes and cupcake tiers. And gladly offerede samples of the flavors. I've been to Luxe Bakery, Butterlane, Crumbs and more but this small place is now my fave! I will definitely be returning very very soon! -

Ain't nothing mini about this mega taste, buddy!! Delicious. Moist, bite-sized goodness you won't be able to stop eating. Make sure you get the Chocolate Kiss (marble with uber rich and creamy chocolate frosting). The carrot cake was delicious too. My hubby looked like he had hit the jackpot when he ate one of the Red Velvets, he was so happy.
I got a couple dozen minis ($13 a dozen) today for a birthday treat for friends who had never had them and they couldn't have been happier! I definitely won Tonnie's Minis a bunch of new customers with those treats.Listed in: Visit NYC, Guilty Pleasures, Dessert Shops (NYC)

Tonnie himself made my roommate and I a lovely assortment of a dozen minis! When my roommate couldn't handle the pressure of deciding what kind of frosting to put on each of them, Tonnie warmly gave us his recommendation for each. Needless to say as soon as we got that dozen cupcakes home we scarfed them all down. So so so good.
As a lover of buttercream frosting on my red velvet, they did not give me the look of shame when I got mine with buttercream and my roommate gave me the death glare and got hers with cream cheese frosting. A sign of a great bakery. -

This is an interesting concept, found in an unexpected location. Walked over after a (disappointing) lunch at Red Rooster. The cupcakes are prepared freshly--with a combination of cake, icing, and toppings of your own choosing. They also come in a variety of sizes. The man putting the cupcakes together was very generous to us newcomers, giving free samples (minis) and making recommendations.

I've had the chocolate with the thiiiiiiiiiick, beautifully swirled chocolate icing - lovelovelove.
I've had the red velvet which is my favorite in the city yet - nice cocoaesque base and perfectly tart-creamcheesy icing - aaaaaaand the red velvet crumbles on top? SUPERlovelovelove.
I need to make a special visit to Harlem and set up a reunion between my mouth and that redvelvet asap. -

Absolutely amazing cupcakes!!!! I took advantage of a groupon deal and I purchased 2 dozen minis for teenagers working hard in manhattan. They went crazy. I also had 4 regular sized for myself. Wow! I'm from Brooklyn but will travel for them every time. The carrot was the truth. The red velvet and yellow moist with quality ingredients. This business definately needs a second location in downtown brooklyn near the upcoming stadium please. We need it. Cake Man Rav has got nothin on this bakery. The staff was friendly and I had lots of flavors to choose from. Good Job!

It's not often that you find a cupcake place that does not basterdize the idea of what a cupcake should be. No overly-fancy flavors or piles of frosting that gets in the way, no cutesy bakery decor that makes you wonder if you are suddenly five years old at a tea party...Tonnie's is a bakery that has everything ready and set to go, all you need is a bit of ingenuity. The staff is as sweet as their products and they don't make cupcake decorating a chore like some places. Pick your cake, pick your frosting and pick your toppings - Tonnie's leaves it up to you, avoiding pretentiousness other cupcakeries typically display. The pistachio icing is divine atop a golden cupcake, and fun toppings like marshmallows and gummy bears will have you coming back for more. Prices are decent compared to other bakeries; I'd take the trip uptown however just to say hi to the staff!

I've had their cupcakes twice. Once they were 2 day old minis that someone bought (and shared 2 days later), another came from a fresh batch, of large size.
Can I tell you that their 2 day old minis were some of the best cupcakes I've ever had (I'm not much of a sweet tooth kinda guy, but take it for what it's worth)? So small, can easily eat a dozen, but if you have self control you won't feel guilty about eating 2-3. Just the right consistency, without falling apart too easily, and oh so soft.
The fresh baked, large one (red velvet base, pistachio cream, Oreo toppings) was delish. I split it with someone and we were both satisfied. They have so many flavor combinations, you won't ever get bored here. And their prices are great!
The place is small, out of the way, up in Harlem, and probably isn't patroned by too many people other than those in the surrounding neighborhood. But please, if you are having a birthday, or know someone who is, and want to get them some special cupcakes - come here. It's worth the trip, right close to 125th stop on the 2/3. These cupcakes are wonderful. Enjoy them with friends! -
Review from Chris S.
I used to frequent their old Bleeker St location and was very saddened to see the "We've Moved" sign upon one of my visits. I actually never thought to come to this place for their cupcakes since it didn't look much like it served quality stuff (Bleeker location). However, upon the recommendation of a friend's friend who used to live in the area, I had to give it a try.
Low and behold, this became my favorite cupcake in the city! The cake was always very moist and they didn't cover it with a heaping load of filling. My only complaint is that their filling isn't anything special. It almost taste like the ones you can buy premade at the grocery store. However, the cake's moistness was just out of this world! I guess you can say I'm a sucker for moist cake, but for that and also the cheap price, I had to give them at least 4 stars! -

GREAT cupcakes!!! IF I didn't care about looking good next summer, I'd be in there EVERY DAY! But I try and stop in for a little treat once a month, and it's always an experience to be savored. The staff is friendly, and although it might take a while to get your cupcake, because of the lines of kids that go there after school, you won't be disappointed. The devils cake cupcake is amazing, and oooh they have great icing (and I hate icing). I like this place above any of the overpriced upper east side non-sense that everyone seems to be obsessed with in the past year. GO TO TONNIE's!

New York, NY
cozy store, friendly staff, great cupcakes. The outdoor seating during the summer is also pretty nice.
Come in, tell them its your first time, and the staff will be sure to let you sample a mini. Once you've tried something you had your eye on or alternatively after they've surprised you with a tasty concoction, the fun part begins. You make the cupcake, which means you choose the cake, the icing, and the topping. They have standard combinations that they recommend, but why not have a bit of fun?
The cakes are soft and moist, the icings are rich but not too sweet, and the toppings add a nice touch that other cupcake places often lack. Not the best cupcakes I've ever had, but they're pretty damn good. Plus you can let your inner child out and create the cupcake combos your five year old self used to dream of. -

I ordered a basic 8" round from here for my mom's birthday back in May and been meaning to review it.
I ordered a strawberry-filled cake with buttercreame icing (very basic). I must say, this cake is definitely the best I've had in Harlem It was moist, sweet, but not overly sweet and the service was excellent given I had a last minute request. My family looved this cake SO much that they STILL talk about it and this place is now their go to place for special occasion cakes.
I was also given samples of their cupcakes and thought those were divine as well!! I highly recommend giving this place a try! -
Review from Chandy S.
My second visit wasn't as wonderful as my first.
There were no...crinkle...cookies. I should have walked out right then and there. I got a golden heart w/cream cheese frosting and a strawberry w/strawberry frosting instead. I liked the strawberry cupcake, but the frosting was just meh. On the other hand, the golden heart w/the cream cheese frosting was very tasty.
They lost a star for lack of crinkle cookie. If you would've seen the sheer disappointment on my face, you'd totally understand.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I tried Tonnie's when it was still in the village and became a fan. Love the cupcakes, moist and pretty reasonably priced! Was disappointed when I went back to that location and they were closed! However that was replaced with joy soon after when they moved/opened in Harlem in a nicer location. They cute patio out front was something to be enjoyed a nice day! And I think perhaps they have a patio out back too!
Must try the Golden Heart. I love red velvet but the Golden Heart is just adorable with just a touch of red velvet inside. -

I'm not usually a big fan of a lot of the cupcakes here in NYC. They are usually too dry, the frosting too sugary. Not so with Tonnie's! The cupcakes are moist and have a dense crumb without being too heavy. I love that you can mix and match the different cakes and frostings - what a great idea!
I had one of the red velvet with cream cheese frosting - a classic and delicious combo. This place has Magnolia, Buttercup, and Crumbs beat by mile. I'll definitely be back! -

I heart Tonnie, whoever you are! Stopped in last Friday with a Groupon (that a man over the phone kindly said he would accept on such short notice) and decided to try one when I got back to the car. Red velvet bliss!! These cupcakes make my mouth happy!!
Lemon (with coconut flakes) - REally, really good
Carrot (with nuts) - not really as flavorful as I would have hoped and I LOVE carrot cake!
Total favorite was the Death by Chocolate - really made me feel like I had died and awoke in a chocolate coma. Best cupcakes ever! -
Review from Amanda C.
I, like many New Yorkers these days, adore cupcakes. I also (like many NYers) have made the claim that 'I've been to them all!' But every time I scratch a cupcakery off my list, another crops up in its place. Luckily, however, many daily deals websites have caught on to the cupcake craze that has taken the city and started to offer more deals on more obscure bakeries. This is how I came to find Tonnie's Mini's...
I bought a coupon via http://Buywithme.com that advertised $10 for $20 worth of cupcakes. I jumped on it immediately with a friend and a few days later we were off to Tonnie's to pick out our treats. My friend had already been to Tonnie's and advised me to try the sampler, a $12 mini cupcake pack that allows you any variety of flavors you want. The cake menu has al of the classics plus strawberry, lemon, and golden heart which is vanilla and red velvet. They also allow you to put any icing flavor on whatever cupcakes you want.
After seeing how indecisive I was about this major decision, the guy behind the counter offered me FREE SAMPLES! AND, the samples were the same size of the mini cupcakes!! I had a carrot, which was delicious, and a pistachio which was slightly heavy. My final sampler consisted of 2 chocolate (one with chocolate icing, one cream cheese), 2 golden heart, 1 vanilla, 1 red velvet, 2 strawberry, and 4 carrot. I haven't gotten through all of them yet, but so far I'm very pleased. The cupcakes are incredibly moist and the icing isn't too sweet. My only complaint is that the vanilla cakes are a little too dense for my liking, but the carrot, something I'm usually not a fan of, is just perfect.
Based on the friendliness of the guy behind the counter who so willingly gave free samples (because I've heard HORROR stories about one of the women behind there), the value, and the taste, I'm definitely a fan and would absolutely return just for the carrot cupcakes. -
Review from Lily H.
The best cupcake in New York is Sweet Revenge. But I am glad to have a local cupcake place, so I support them. The cake is ok, though a bit straightforward-- the flavors are all classics such as yellow cake. The icing is too sugary. Then you have the option of putting a candy topping ... sugar upon sugar.
One time I got a cupcake and it was sunken in and flat. I should have stopped him and asked for another one before he slathered the icing on. Other times it's been ok. I think the cake quality was better when it was in the village.
I've also had a slice of the red velvet. I liked that better than the cupcake because it had more cake in proportion to the icing. -

Cuz if you don't know, now you know!!!! This place is delicioso! They have three sizes and if you want just one mini it's complimentary! What! I know.. amazing. Their service is fantastic and their flavors are simple but delicious and the actual cupcake is moist like a home made cake. The frosting is just enough for the cupcake and they never over do it. I love you Tonnies and I recommend you to anyone who visits or lives in New York because you are fantastic! :) xoxoxo See you soon!

Harlem, New York, NY
The only problem is that like most new-ish places they are still working on their rhythm--the credit card machine was down and some of the cake was fresh out of the oven and there was a waiting time before it could be frosted.
Other than those minor (and understandable) issues, their cupcakes are great although Im not really sure that you can make a bad cupcake. I also love the options of adding toppings to your already frosted cupcake like pistachio nuts (nom!) and red velvet cake crumbles.
Thanks for coming to Harlem Tonnie Mini's. We appreciate ya. -

I vacationed in New York in December and my cousin had to take me here. I have no idea how long it took to get to Tonnie's, but it seemed FOREVER! Three words: well worth it! When we got there, it smelled absolutely divine - like freshly-baked cupcakes! You know you love that aroma..
The staff was amazing! They were patient and very attentive. My cousin got the red velvet cupcakes and a few waterbottles, but call me picky or high-maintenance, but I thought coffee would be the perfect complement to a delectable creation. For health reasons, I can only have decaf coffee - and although I told the staff that I really didn't NEEEEED the coffee, they made it anyway and told me not to worry about it. AMAZING service!
So there it is - incredible cupcakes, awesome staff...what more could you ask for?
