Review from Tereza M.
I visited this restaurant on Friday night after reading a lot of positive reviews on Yelp. It was quite busy (although we didn't have to wait for a table) and the staff was pleasant. All the booths were full so we sat at a table in the center of the restaurant. There were also communal tables available. Overall, the atmosphere was not that great because the tables and chairs were shabby and one leg of our table wobbled. It was also a bit noisy. Our experience dramatically improved though when we were transfered to a booth where there was significantly more privacy.
But what this place lacks in ambiance it makes up with delicious food - and lots of it! The portions are very generous. I ordered a grilled eel roll and vegetable tempura and I took half of my food home. My boyfriend had the spicy salmon roll and the Alaska roll (fish and crab). He really enjoyed the salmon roll because "it was actually spicey". You also get a bunch of complimentary sides with your meal which is nice (but they don't tell you about them until you order); ours were tofu, bean sprouts, and Kimchy.
Overall, I would definitely come here again because the food was very flavorful but wouldn't come on a date again due to lack of privacy and ambiance. -

I'm having a hard time believing I ate at the same restaurant as all of these 4/5 star reviews. Either I was hallucinating, everyone else was hallucinating, or the meal I had was a serious anomaly.
We arrived one evening and easily got a table - chose Tomu because of the higher scored reviews than other sushi joints in the area. Ambience was average at best - walking in, you feel like you're at a takeout restaurant, but the room is bigger than that. Some booths adorn the walls, each is covered by a series of drapes that make you feel like you'll have a private dining experience - but in actuality the wall of booths has no coverings between each table, so you can easily hear what's going on next to you.
Service was also hit or miss - our waitress came frequently at first, but rarely during the last third of the meal. We had to poke our heads out of the drapes and interrupt the staff chatting session going on to get boxes and our bill.
But let's get to the food, what you'll care about the most.
If you'd like to see a menu, check out the pics I uploaded - there's a lot of them, and I tried to get all of the pages... the menu is HUGE.
-MISO SOUP was flat out wrong - it should have nothing in it but bonito or dashi broth, miso, and water (plus seaweed, tofu, green onions, etc). I'm not sure what it was, but there was something wrong in there in addition to the above ingredients - bouillon, maybe? I have no idea, but it tasted terrible.
-HOUSE SALAD was tasty, a ginger-y and pleasant dressing.
-SALMON TERIYAKI was one of the worst dishes I've had at any Japanese (or JP/Korean hybrid, as Tomu is) restaurant.
First off, I ordered the 'dinner' instead of just the Salmon Teriyaki as a side dish, because the 'dinner' boasted free miso, salad and rice. After ordering our waitress informed us that actually, all meals come with salad and miso. So, cool? I paid the extra $5 or whatever just to get a side of rice? Uhh...
That aside, what came out was a plate full to the brim of salmon - sounds good right? There were two major issues:
1. Absolutely FULL of pinbones. There's no excuse for this - take the time to pull out the bones please before serving
2. Very fishy tasting - that means only one thing, and one thing alone - it's not fresh. Given I had a yummy seafood dish at Wildcraft during the same visit to K/W, and given they managed to serve a piece of fish that was fresh, I don't buy that it's simply a lack of proximity to the ocean. Poor quality salmon, period.
-FUTOMAKI ROLL was easily my favorite of any of the dishes. I had it sans crab, but otherwise it's what you'd expect from this standard roll - pickled bits, veggies, egg, etc. Tasty.
-VEGETABLE ROLL was also good, similar to the Futomaki
-SIDE DISHES that arrived were also a highlight - kimchee, sesame oil-laden bean sprouts, and sweet potato cubes.
Had the salmon not been so atrocious I would have rated Tomu a 3, given the ambience and other shortcomings (though with a few positive notes). The salmon easily knocks down the score a star - there's no excuse for old meat and ample pinbones, especially for $15 (given that cost really only included the salmon and the rice, out of the 'dinner' cost)
I don't plan on returning to Tomu. -

It's really a hit and miss at this place. Had an OK experience, and a terrible one.
The OK experience was less than comparable Sushi places in the area.
The terrible experience was with a batch of spicy tuna rolls that tasted like they were past their prime.
The place feels very much like a cafeteria with booths lining up each side.
Don't expect much from this place. -

Opened a few weeks ago in Waterloo, and I might have to say - it's one of my favourite places to go to for Korean/Japanese food.
My roommates and I each ordered two dishes each. Roommate #1: beef udon & sashimi love boat; roommate #2: jajangmyeon; roomate #3: eel sushi pizza & don katsu; and I ordered the soon-tofu, with a Kamikaze roll (included spicy salmon, avocado, cucumber, etc.). The soon-tofu wasn't comparable to places in Toronto, however, it was quite filling.
The surprise was the sushi and sashimi -- it was fresh, and delicious! The waitress told us that the flounder had just been shipped in that morning. The sashimi love boat was to die for. I would also suggest for the eel sushi pizza as well!
Not only that, the appetizer side-dishes were amazing as well -- it included kimchi, daikon, etc. We asked for a side of japchae, and somehow, they gave us a huge dish of it.
Service was impeccable! Our waitress had a friendly face on all the time, and other waiters checked up on as well.
Will definitely come back to this place again! Great restaurant!Listed in: OMNOMNOMs in…

I've only been here once and I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to sushi but this stuff was pretty good. The staff was very friendly and the fish tasted amazing!
Our sushi was served on a wooden boat! -

I decided to try Tomu sushi myself after reading the first review by "Joanne W."
Everything she says is true.
I have since been back 2 or 3 times, and my wife and I have tried the red dragon roll, black dragon roll, a couple of their sushi/sashimi dinners and we usually get a small spicy salmon maki just for fun. Everything we have been served at Tomu sushi has been fantastic.
The chefs make their specialty maki (dragon rolls etc.) quite large and elaborate. The ones we have tried and seen have had extra sauce drizzled on top and tempura yam inside - makes for a nice touch.
The bottomless Korean side-dishes are make whatever we order well worth our money because we always leave with full stomachs.
The service - all wait staff have been friendly. One waitress even played with our baby each time she visited our table :). Food arrives fast, and the restaurant is decorated nicely and kept very clean.
Go to Tomu sushi, you will be impressed.
