I don't promise you that Tokyo Sushi offers the best sushi in town (hence the 4 stars).  However,  I do think it's one of the better places north of Somerset in Centretown. Because of its location, Tokyo Sushi has become my go-to sushi joint. If you live or work in Centretown, I'm sure you're nodding your head in agreement.

Since it's practically a stone's throw from my house and my office, I eat there so much it's becoming embarrassing. When I order take out, I walk in, wearing shades and a trench coat, pay quickly, avoid eye contact with the employees, and hurry home to eat in solitude like the addict that I am. I'm joking. Sort of. Either way, it's true, I do go to Tokyo Sushi a lot. The lunchtime specials are great. They consist of a mix of several different rolls and the price is right at about $10-$13. They even offer vegentarian/vegan options. Plant-based dieters, you can partake too!

In recent months I've introduced many friends to Tokyo Sushi. Most of them have been pleased with the stellar selection and elaborate menu,  and another selling point for my new recruits has been the ambiance. It's bright and feels roomy (despite the limited square footage), and the tastefully thematic decor makes you feel, at least for a second, like you've been swooped away to Japan. Another part of the Tokyo Sushi orientation includes the volcano roll. It's a mountain of spicy salmon with green onions atop a sweet potato roll. De-li-cious!

Last but not least, I must recommend the wakame salad (seaweed salad). Please try it. Trust me (says the creepy sushi addict), you'll love it!

Here's a tip: If you plan to eat in over the lunch hour, make reservations a day or two in advance - it's small, so it fills up quickly.

I'm going to start off this review by admitting I didn't eat at Tokyo Sushi.  I wanted to I swear.

I walked to Tokyo Sushi one July day, excited that there were more sushi options near Centretown.  When I arrived, I was smacked in the face by the stench of fish it summer heat.  Despite the fact that it was easily 30 degrees outside, Tokyo has no air conditioning!

This isn't really acceptable in a city like Ottawa, where summers often provide weeks of unbearable heat.  Not only was it actually warmer inside then it was outside, but it was clear that Tokyo was unable to keep their fish from the heat.  Since I like to avoid making myself sick, I decided to walk out and not return.

Sushi in Ottawa continues to disappoint and Tokyo is no exception.

Poor quality overall. Ordered a variety of items off the menu and they ranged from mediocre to just plain awful.

Tempura and goza dumplings were terrible. Overcooked, and greasy and the dumplings were stale on the outside. The tempura was not a traditional batter and absolutely garbage.

The highlight was the spring rolls but those are really hard to screw up. Raw vegetables inside a spring roll wrapper with dipping sauce are a no brainer.

The maki rolls were extremely disappointing with little fish inside, and mostly rice. In addition, fake crab was used to fill out alot of the rolls which is a sign of poor quality in my opinion.

I would not go back. Anyone who has experienced good quality sushi would be wise to avoid this place.

A non-stop flow of pre-ordered take-out seems to keep the young Koreans who run Tokyo Sushi hard at work. At least, this was the case when I decided to dine-in one evening. From the selection of combos, party trays, maki in various sizes (hoso comes in six pieces, futo unspecified, and special in eight), colourful sushi pizzas, cooked entrees, and rice bowls, there is a little bit of everything to choose from.

As the only early dinner patron, I sat at one of the diagonally set up two-top tables and looked forward to the surprise of whichever daily chef's choice of maki would come in the Dinner Combo A. Though I was quite disappointed to find out that the combo did not include miso soup (an extra $2) or even green salad appetizer, it was most pleasing that there were four different kinds of maki in the combo today - california, spicy kani (imitation crab meat), avocado, and a futo california.

Music from the radio (that was thankfully changed from a crackly top 40s station to good old soft rock) somehow was a perfect accompaniment to the rather bland room. It was just the place to take a magazine to dinner though.

This is a quaint little sushi bar situated in the smack dab middle of Kent Street. This is one of my favourite places to go if I want to just hang out by myself for a bit while I leisurely snack on food, drink tea and read a book. The server and sushi chef don't mind and the noise level is fairly low.

My favourite item on the menu is their sweet potato sushi ($4 for 8 pieces). It's slightly warm and so deliciously crisp, it makes me melt. Their food ranges from snack sized items to large trays for gatherings. Their prices are reasonable.

The sushi here is pretty good but the extra charge for miso and tea is annoying.  I think Angela L's review sums up this place nicely.  I may return to Tokyo Sushi for take-out but not a sit down meal.

I was looking for a quiet clean and friendly place to enjoy fresh sushi and found it here. It is a bright, airy, and cozy single room with a neat and tidy sushi case (but no sushi bar) and maybe 10-12 small tables nicely laid out. Warm greetings from the chef and server started the meal, as did a prompt and wonderful pot of hot green tea (it was -20C in early January).
Tempura (veggie & shrimp) was solid, but not amazing - just not the lightest batter I've ever had, but no mistakes. I had one of the larger samplers they have (combo E) and a spider roll (soft shell crab). Turned out to be more than enough food. The spider roll and sushi were beautifully and competently presented and very well done. Very fresh and creative.
[Just an extra word on their "lunch express sushi combos, " I am a big guy (6ft and 240lbs) and I showed up very hungry, but the Combo E sampler alone (without the tempura starter or spider roll add-on) would have been a nicely satisfying lunch.)
In terms of value, Tokyo Sushi was a solid "10," and I would definitely go back next time I am in Ottawa!

By far my favourite sushi in town. Good prices and great food. Never sat in but take out from here a few times a month.
