I've always been intrigued by this sushi place in St. James. It looks so cute on the outside with its decorations! The interior has a nice Asian style décor with about 12 tables. The place was a bit chilly so they could turn up the heat a bit (even my bf thought it was cool), but this place doesn't have the two sets of doors to minimize the draft so I guess that doesn't help. It's not a large restaurant and only one server was on duty on Saturday night. She did a decent job of keeping up with nearly all of the tables occupied. But, it was one of those evenings where you had to be on the lookout for the server and ask for basic things like soy sauce, refills etc. Also, the food service was a little out of sequence as most places would start with the sashimi but ours came as the last dish well after we had finished the rest of meal - which was a little annoying. Despite the service, the food was good and the pricing was very moderate as our bill for an soup, tea, assorted tempura, order of sashimi and 4 rolls came to just $63 before tips. Not too shabby.
Miso soup could use more tofu and seaweed. Also, the soup was too salty, I could barely finish it. There was a generous portion of tempura that had a nice crispy exterior and didn't taste too greasy. There were 8 pieces of wild salmon sashimi for ($12.95) - it tasted quite fresh. I like that their rolls are rolled tightly, ie, doesn't fall apart and are of the one bite variety. The rice had a good consistency, another plus. They had a lot of interesting rolls like one called the "chef's tears" where there was salmon topped on a roll filled with avocado, cucumber and crab meat along with a "chip disc" that contained sliced onions that had been tossed with a creamy dressing (sort of like a toned down coleslaw). There was a special roll that started with an "o" and was hard to pronounce and remember but it my least favourite roll. It was a warm roll that's covered with some sweet house sauce and shredded cabbage and onions. The sauce was just too overpowering and heavy so it really took away from the roll. The spicy scallop roll and the negi tori maki were both delicious.
But overall, good price and most of the dishes were hits so I'd definitely come back even if it's a little out of my way. -

Went here a few weeks ago. Great decor and very clean. Service was a little slow, likely because they only had one server on duty. The food looked great when it came out, and tasted as good as it looked. Would certainly go back.
