A nice little place with a real Mexican feel to it. The food is definitely fresh; the soft tortilla shells are delicious, and the tortilla chips and salsa verde they give to you are addictive!
My coworker ordered a dish with their mole sauce, and to be sure the waitress offered a sample of the sauce since it's a rather strong one. I thought that was very nice and thoughtful of her.
They were featuring strawberry margaritas on special, made with real fruit, and the booze was definitely not skimped on. Winner!
If you're starving I suggest ordering a burrito. I'm a small person and my fish taco meal only came with two small ones, I was not full when I left. My coworker's enchilada meal was not enough for him either, although delicious. The burrito, however, was gigantic and could not be finished! -

After several recommendations from locals (by the way of online forums) and other review, I decided to go here with our group when we came to Courtenay. From the outside, you can tell that Tita's is a diamond in the rough. It's such a cute building and they have some gardening in the perimeter. I was initially attracted to Tita's not just because it was Mexican food, but it was socially responsible Mexican food and they have a cute homey story to back it up. It's a nice feel good place. It's not necessarily set up for large groups, but they gladly accommodated our group of 8.
To begin, our cute, friendly, awesome, server, Julie, told us they had fresh strawberry margaritas. And they were delicious and appropriately strong! The chips and salsa were great and they didn't charge us for seconds. I wish I could figure out how to make their salsa verde because it was tasty, but I wouldn't have minded a little more spicy heat.
For starters, I ordered sopa de tortilla. Now, I've never had one of these before so I had nothing to compare it to, but this soup was amazing! It was in chicken broth that was infused with cilantro (which I love!) and had a subtle heat at the end. Combined with chicken, tortilla chips and gooey cheese, it was a total winner! I would go to Courtenay again just for that soup.
All of the dinners looked amazing! I ordered the taquitos with refried beans and rice. It came with guacamole, pico de gallo, and a yummy cabbage slaw in a lime/cilantro dressing. At this point I was getting so full from my 1L of strawberry margarita I had ordered and the tortilla soup. I probably could have finished my refried beans if it was covered in some ooey gooey cheese like the Mexican restaurants in the US do. The taquitos were pretty good with their accompaniments.
What we were really looking forward to was dessert, even though we were ridiculously full. So between me and one other dinner companion, we shared the bread pudding with cajeta and the trio dessert which had chocolate ganache, an ancho chocolate cake, and a fresh fruit meringue.
The trio was delicious. All three of the items were quite nice and a good balance of chocolate and fruit. The only thing is that it was quite predictable. I was really looking forward to the cajeta bread pudding because it's something unique. Essentially, Cajeta is caramel or dulce de leche made of goats milk so it's sweet caramel but it has the unique flavour of goats milk. They also had some goat cheese in the bread pudding. It was balanced with a scoops of vanilla gelato. I can't say it was my favorite dessert ever, but it was well done and the best cajeta I've had.
Overall, the food was great, the service was great. I was a happy camper... well actually i felt like a glutton because I was ridiculously full from the dinner. But It was good! -

If I'm craving Mexican, I head to Tita's.
It's true this place runs on "Mexican time", which means service can be a little slow, and the prices are on the high side, but for me, that's just fine. I go to Tita's knowing I'll be there for several hours, and I really appreciate any restaurant committed to supporting local farmers. The food is fresh and flavourful - you can tell a lot of love has gone into the food.
The lamb chimichangas are delish, the tortilla soup hearty, but my favorite item are the tamales - every other tamale I eat gets compared to the ones at Tita's.
And, one MUST try the deep fried bananas - so good!
