I took courses through Open Learning, and found the experience to be positive. Everything I needed for the course arrived in one big box. Sent in assignments and usually had them back within a week. Exams weren't too far away. Course quality was quite good. And the TRU web portal makes it super easy to look up grades and send transcripts to other universities, etc. No added fees for anything. My only complaint was that I took a couple of First Nations Lit courses, and only one of them had an actual Aboriginal person involved in the course development. I'm not one to state hard and fast that the only authority on a culture is somebody who is a member of that culture, but if I'm to be taught by someone who is not a member of said culture, I would like to know on what basis they claim their authority to teach the subject. ie: which Aboriginal elders or academics endorse their work in the field. That wasn't provided in this instance.
