I go to TYC for the yoga classes only, and it is a top-notch experience. Why? Because the instructors are amazing (Johnny, Nicole, Michael..basically, every instructor there..), the atmosphere and decor are calm and modern, the cleanliness superb, the service impeccable. You can shower, plenty of towels, shampoo, hairdryers, you name it, it is available, including free mats with your membership. They also have a great sauna and steam room in the change rooms.
The hot yoga is for members only, and it is SO good, especially in wintertime!! I have been a member since the opening of the club, and on several occasions I cancelled and tried other yoga studios, and nothing beats TYC in my opinion. Yes, you may get more specialized yoga at Downward Dog or some other studio, but, then, the whole experience becomes hard when you can't shower after a sweaty class, or need to pay extra for a towel or mat (I hate that!). Here, it is an all-around great experience. I also live in the neighbourhood so it is super fast to get here. You feel great after you have done a class. To top it all off, go eat at Whole Foods which is just on the lower level from TYC -awesome!!!! -

I have been a member for three years and this is a great gym! Great classes, never crowded, top of the class machines....i highly recommend boris' butt blaster classes, spin classes and hot yoga...
Everyone is in great shape here...isn't that a great motivator? -

My girlfriend and I have been a member of the Yorkville Club for about 7 months now. We love the ambiance when you first walk in to when you walk out. It feels so non-gymish (not a word I know). Over the years, I have been a member of every major gym in Toronto from Superfitness to Bally's to Goodlife, to always the YMCA downtown.
So, trust me when I say this place is very serene, clean, and non-offensive as gyms go.
What I really like:
*The Yoga classes. The selections, and the times are very accommodating. As well, the hot yoga room is top notch.
*The spin classes. Great time selection, great room, good instructors.
*The weights. Well maintained, always working, Top notch.
*The woman's change room. Clean, clean, clean. Lovely to be in, and it has a great working sauna.
*The affordabilty, and free parking. Not as expensive as you might think, but the she-she factor might not be for everyone.
*The number of people who are over the age of 40, and who look damn good (facelift or not)!
What I don't care for:
*Busy now more than ever. The first few months one could go at any time and there was never any waiting for equipment. Now at unexpected times, say 2pm on a Wednesday, the gym is over run with people. WTH?
*The peepers. Granted there are peepers in every gym. However, this gym, with it's share of old men with money, has peepers of a different sort. They are exceedingly friendly if you give them the time of day, or exceedingly creepy if you choose to ignore them.
*One of the owner's who shall remain nameless. Enough said.
The pros definitely outweigh the cons, and for me this gym is a keeper. -

Best gym, very modern, great equipment, super clean, staff + trainers are friendly and very helpful. They have so many different classes from pilates, yoga[ all types], spinning, cardio, step, stretch,Thai box, fencing, salsa, belly dancing and my new favorite acuball body roll. Plus I lost 7lbs in the past 3 months it doesn't sound like much but it was hard to do, check out my food diary and workout schedule. http://www.askjoeygarr...
I am always open to pointers. -

Turnoff #1. Lulu Lemmings. That's who they cater to. (LOVE Lulu Lemon, but we're a free market, people). And sorry, but noone in head to toe spandex "shadowboxing" Billy Blank style can afford to act snobby. It's supposed to be fun!
Turnoff # 2: The rep who gave us our free weak (oops, I mean week) trial followed up one afternoon to pitch me over the phone. I explained that I was in a business meeting with my boss (fact), and she then proceeded to try to squeeze in her sales pitch at increased pace, which made ME feel rude for having to hang up. Unnerving!
Turnoff #3: Spookiness. On a couple of evenings, the place was so oddly (maybe there were some lemmings in the cardio room?) empty that I felt like I was in a museum only to find the statues staring at me like in Scooby-Doo. Half expected tumbleweeds to roll through. Not their fault, I guess. They do try (see point #2).
Comparison shopping: better value, cleanliness, class schedule and geographical coverage at Extreme Fitness.
1 Upside-- the MUAY THAI class was beyond AWESOME, bringing this review to 3 stars. -

Like most sane girls, I HATE, HATE, HATE my body. And like most sane girls, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to eat. That, my friends, is what I call an impossible dilemma, one that can only be partially solved by visiting the gym.
The Yorkville club, a dark strange space that looks more like a club than a gym, is packed with 'Skinny Bitches' and muscle-bound men who have fallen straight out of the 'Pumped Up' skit on SNL. The gym is also expensive but if you are serious about working out, money is no object and this gym really is the place to do it. The classes they offer include spinning, but blasting, and ab-busting and they also have three fully functioning yoga and Pilates studios (one of them is hot). The gym is worth the membership fee even if you only practise yoga because you get unlimited classes with your membership plus the use of the rest of the gym. -

I was always intimidated by gyms for being so bleak. I hated the endless rows of treadmills and the confusing variety of machines that all seem to work the same muscle. TYC differs from past experience as its a clean, modern, well equipped gym.
The cost for monthly membership is somewhere between $65-$70 biweekly (based on a 1-year membership). When I registered TYC was having a special and waved the initiation fee, which would have been around $350.
While the monthly membership may seem steep when you consider all you get for free (like parking) its a great deal. I would say the average cost to park per hour at a typical mall in Toronto (like Hazelton Lanes) is around $6. So if you went to the gym 2 hours a session and 3 times a week for a year you'd be paying over $1800 on parking alone.
I frequent the gym during weekday mornings and its never been overly busy. The majority of people are aging Forest Hill type housewives so it's not an intimidating gym. However, I went to the gym once during the weekend and it was a meat market. The gym had a fair bit of stereotypical muscle jocks who spend just as much time working out as they do admiring themselves in the mirror.
I've never used a personal trainer and have yet to try one of the classes (TYC offers more than 65 classes a week including Hatha, Ashtanga, Hot Yoga, Pilates, and Restorative Yoga and Pilates), but the staff are friendly from who I've encountered. Although they do try to pitch (like all gyms), they're never pushy.
If you can get past the membership price tag, TYC is a wonderful gym! -

Thank you Extreme Fitness for pushing me directly into Yorkville Club's open arms!
I first went to extreme fitness (Dunfield club location) to check out their services and was fairly impressed by everything. In the first week following my tour, one of the accounts people called me 3 times at work to follow up and try and get me to sign a contract. So, long and behold I ended up across the street at the no hassle Yorkville club. The facilities are great, the gym is never busy, and the club even holds social events for their members!
I was lucky enough to join and get a deal so I pay approximately the same as Extreme, though I'm much happier. If you have the opportunity to check out Yorkville club and the rates are reasonable, give the trial membership a chance. Unlike Extreme there isn't a book of small print to actually negate the "free membership" offer they seem to always have. -

I love Yorkville Fitness.
I decided to try out their free month membership. Unlike other places in the area, there is no fine prints on their trial membership.
Everybody there is so friendly, Their classes are conveniently scheduled and I never have a problem exercising there. -

I was a member of the Yorkville Gym from the time it opened up until a year and a half ago. Leaving it was one of the worst mistakes I ever made. They give deals to people in the neighborhood, and best of all, most of the people they cater too, just buy memberships, they don't actually use them, so it's never packed. The classes range from boxing to several kinds of yoga, including Hatha, Bikram and everything in between. The machines all have TVs in them, and rarely is there one that is broken for more than a day. They also have a nifty consierge service that will sort out your groceries at Whole Foods below or book your travel itinerary all while you work out. It's worth a lot more than the membership price and you can usually get a deal that comparable to Extreme without the beefcake meat heads and line ups for machines

I really could do without more people at my gym, but what the hell...
I've used my fair share of gyms around the world and Toronto (Equinox, Gold's, Club One, Extreme, Kingwest, 99 Sudbury, etc.) and I have to say I find TYC pretty top notch.
Yeah, it's not cheap, but you can find a pretty decent deal for what you get - considering all classes are free, including yoga and pilates. I don't even do classes regularly and find it to be good value.
What I like:
1) Unlike some of the reviewers and my experience at other gyms, I've never felt like I was being sold or pushed anything. I've actually gotten advice and short sessions from trainers for free, without even a mention of buying follow-on sessions
2) I usually show up fairly late in the evening and love the emptiness mentioned in the other review. I basically see some subset of the same 10 people there any given evening, but if you want to socialize rather than work out just show up at 6pm, the place is full of good looking people
3) Equipment is new, fully stocked, clean, and always in working condition
4) Every staff member I've interacted with has been excellent - courteous and helpful. Like I said I don't go to the gym to socialize, but the members I've bumped into have generally been nice enough
5) Gym, locker room, and showers, kept surprisingly clean
6) Free underground parking is key; especially in the winter when you can tend to get too lazy to face the cold, and you can stop by whole foods on your way back to your car
I don't think I'll be switching gyms anytime soon but if I had to, the only other one I'd consider is 99 Sudbury; new and still working out some kinks, but lots of potential
