The event was pretty awesome. I went with my sister as her +1 since she's an elite member. There was a pretty good selection of drinks. The Peroni beer was my favorite. The place was huge but it did resemble a school gym.
The highlights of the night definitely included the bathroom incident. Seeing the one yelper fight with that short vet was hilarious. -

"Yelp: Real People. Real Talk."
The Snow Ball gave me blue balls. I'm not going to lie, this was a little bit of a letdown as far as Yelp Events go. Positives: free bites and booze. Granted, if you were homeless (or from Williamsburg and your dad's plastic was declined) and this was your only opportunity to snack and drink for the next year, this would be awarded five stars all the way. Food vendors up the wazoo and enough drinks being poured into tiny plastic cups to drive Green Peace into a frenzy, the Yelp Snow Ball surely delivered.
But what they didn't deliver was a little bit of winter wonderland. There was, as silly as it sounds, no magic in the air. Nor was there snow on the ground. No paper doilies, no red and green streamers, no evergreens decked in glittering orbs, no mistletoe. And there wasn't much of a ball either. No chandeliers. No orchestra, not even a quartet; no grand entrance, no glass slippers, no designated dance floor.
It also lacked some of the things promised in the invitations: magicians, hula-hoopers, jugglers, balloon artists, stilt-walkers... I guess a rouge magician could have been to blame for the dancing bowling pin with "Bowlmor Lanes" tattooed on its gut, but something leads me to believe that is not the case.
On top of this, it also lacked certain amenities that one grows accustomed to (perhaps we are just too spoiled?) when attending Yelp events. Such as, but not limited to: seating, tables, bathrooms that actually adhere to the gender specified by the hieroglyphic on the door. (I never thought I would go downstairs and be told to wait by bathroom... bouncers? because the girls had just grown just so gosh darn tired of waiting in line for their bathroom that they had decided to overtake the men's bathroom.)
I know, I know. I'm a grinch. I know, I know, I'm a douchebag*. I know, I know, "Stop taking Yelp so seriously." Which is fine. I'll stop taking Yelp so seriously, but I've got one question: When is Yelp going to /start/ taking itself seriously? I enjoy being Elite, I love Peter, Jane, and Leighann (in no particular order... ::coughPeterissocutecough::), but this one was a little bit of a bummer. And I'm not ashamed of saying so.
In truth, I did have a good time. I milled around with some great Yelpers, drank some $1 beer (tip your bartender, people!), listened to some unfortunately un-ball-ish music**, and was able to give a few dollars to a very worthy cause; but I didn't really have a ball at the Ball.
---
*I did shout at the ladies in line, "If you're in line for the Men's Bathroom you're either going to have to fuck someone in a stall, or pee somewhere else." I got mixed reactions.
**I actually really like this band. They've played at two or three other events (Chelsea Cinemas, Randal's Island, Brooklyn Winery) and they're very good. But they're more likely to conjure an image of a Williamsburg ho-down than they are a Winter Solstice Ball.Listed in: The Funny Papers, Yelp Events, Cool Cats

The times, they are a-changin'...
Back in the day...a Yelp event was an Event-capital-E, whether it be poppin' sliders and sippin' cocktails at the Pop Burger Event with a dozen people in August 2006, getting down and dirty at the Sullivan Room during the magical summer of 2007 or wearing speakeasy-inspired pinstripes at 49 Grove in 2008. Back in the day...a holiday party meant party dresses at APT, and a ball meant dress-to-impress at the Inaugural Ball at Country...
But man alive...the Yelp Snow Ball (I hesitate to call it that) just shows that the times...they are a-changin'.
I recognize that Yelp is pretty much a humongous beast of an organization at this point. I completely acknowledge the logistical nightmare that is the combination of both (a) thousands of people convening on one location at the same time and expecting free shit and (b) the desire to avoid (1) stampeding, (2) rioting, (3) wild elephants marching through the middle of the venue and (4) bouts of pantslessness (oh wait...).
I really do.
And in that sense, the venue worked amazingly well in that it's probably the only place (other than the Javits Center) where there didn't seem to be an upper capacity of bodies. Or, if there were, then we were still a small township away from reaching it.
But that, along with the $$$ raised for charity, was probably the only plus.
I felt like we were misled by any number of things:
Instructions to dress "sassy but classy" were misleading. Either that or people failed reading comprehension because I don't think "sassy but classy" usually means ripped denim and Uggs. Ugh. I felt pretty dumb wearing my red satin dress, and I felt terrible for all of my friends who got dolled up for this event-lower-case-E. (By the way, I think you all looked lovely, and I really appreciated the time and effort everyone put into it. I saw makeup on unmakeup-ed friends, dresses on pants/jeans girls, and suits on friends I didn't even know owned suits. That was pretty awesome.)
"Lite bites" - Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory was the one booth I was able to visit before Elite hour was up. After Elite hour, I made two stops at the shorter-lined booths: Energy Kitchen for a wrap (it was edible...nothing outstanding) and Fat Radish for their layered root vegetable thing (putrid - I think Rob L. saw my face and said "that bad?"). After that, the lines became unmanageable. For what it's worth, the ice cream was delicious.
"Holiday" party - No lights? No decorations? Not even some CVS lawn ornaments and paper cutouts? Ummmmm, lemme think...oh yeah, I saw Santa. And he likes Peroni.
"Ball" - Besides the matter of wardrobe (addressed above), I think "ball" usually conveys dimly lit dance floors...dancing (or at least danceable tunes)...swaying cheek-to-cheek. Ahem. When I walked in, I felt my stomach drop. I was really hoping there was a back room or something for dancing...maybe? Or that they'd dim the lights after Elite hour...maybe? But no. I got to see everyone's denim in their full overhead-lights, multiple-halogen-bulbed, 1000 Watt glory. And although the music wasn't terrible and I appreciate the effort to get live bands, I think I'm not alone when I say I like to dance to stuff I recognize. So, yes, there was even a moment when I wanted to bust out my iPod and plug it into the speaker system so we could dance to some Biggie.
Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but, Yelp, this is my real review. It sucked. I was majorly disappointed.
It may have been easier to swallow if it had been billed as the food expo trade show/middle school dance (with people awkwardly standing around and decidedly NOT dancing) that it was.
But as a "ball," it was a Yelpfail. -
Review from Briana M.
Wow, I'm actually kind of sickened by the low star reviews.
You're being invited to sample free food and free booze. Shut UP! So, maybe it didn't live up to your expectations. But you can at least be appreciative of the effort that must have been put in to bring these restaurants together, the booze, the entertainment. If you're not having fun, it's not like someone has a gun to your head and is telling you to wait on a line for some fucking food. Just. Leave. Stop. Whining.
Of course there were a few things missing, but not every event is going to run smoothly. Hell, my dinner parties hardly ever go without a hitch.
Don't hate. Appreciate.
My one gripe is that I didn't meet Mike S. -
Review from Wing L.
Too stuffed... could barely type... ugh.... *takes deep breath* You could do it Wing. Here goes:
Wait on line to start. So cold: Brrr.
Hello Peter D. Hello Jane K. Hello Leighann F.
Walk in. Lots of food. Munch munch munch. Yum yum yum. Thirsty. Lots of drinks. Gump gump gump. Yum yum yum again.
Good music. Was a bit too loud at first but it leveled out towards the end of the night. What? Whatcha say? Sorry. I've gone a bit deaf. Munch munch munch. Gump gump gump.
Look. Friends. hug hug hug. More friends. Hug hug hug. So many people. Crowd so big. Lost friends. Find friends. Lost more friends. Damn it. Munch munch munch. Gump gump gump.
People dancing. At least I think that is what they were doing. I don't dance. Ignore.
People could play golf at the corner. Line too long. Too bad. Looks fun.
Photo booth from shutterBooth. Grab friends. Strike a pose. Strike a pose. Vogue. Vogue. Vo... errr.. nevermind.
End of night. For people that stayed. Bottles and even boxes of wine, beer, and ginger ales were given out.
Not a perfect event. Could be more festive. I had my share of food but some venders ran out too early for the non-Elites coming in at 7PM instead of 6PM like us. I do appreciate the hard work every company did to set this up for everyone despite that. Also this is for CHARITY people. Remember that.
As long as I have my Yelper friends around, these events will always be 5 stars. *turns around to give them a hug again* Where are they? Arghhh... I've lost them in that damn large crowd again!!!! F@#$ it. Minus one star!!!!!
There. Review done. Now I can sleep happily dreaming of the fact that us Yelpers contributed about $5,000 for the NYC Coalition Against Hunger. Good job everyone. Let us aim for $10,000 next year. -
Review from Jax W.
Brooklyn, NY
Ugh, Yelp what the hell was that? Ugh, I have a bad taste in my mouth... it tastes, it tastes like awkward and uncomfortable. Look, let's start with the venue- it was well lit. People on Yelp don't go to Yelp events because of the amazing lighting, they go to get wasted and ogle some yelper they've been stalking and yes, the proper mood lighting is dim. It was bright as day in there! It was like a church function or a trade show. i was waiting for someone to sell me a blender.
Second, two buck chuck? Really? Really now? You could have done so much better with that sponsorship. but thanks for the beer and tea.... because the line to use the restroom was ah-mazing.
The line up for the food tables like we were cattle. Well, that should say a mouthful but it left you no incentive to enjoy the food because you're too busy scarfing it down so you can head to the next line. Isn't Yelp about savoring the bite so you can write a decent review? But I do thank Jane for the heads up that we should eat ahead of time. I didn't try a single bite, since I don't like waiting around or standing while I eat. And i should add in, unless you were elite, you didn't even get a chance to try the food as most vendors were shut down by or before 8pm.
The socializing. Wow, that was awkward. It was more awkward than my last blind date and that is saying a lot. But let's be honest there was NO incentive to meet anyone outside your preset circle. Plus all the running around, you could really meet people. And the music was ehhhh....
Back in my day, hang on I'm going to put on my grandma panties now. Back in my day we had holiday parties at Apt, and they were amazing, with vodka sponsors and there was real love in the room, so much love that i lovingly passed out on a sofa and you know what? Everyone took care of my drunk ass. Those were the days, I miss those days and it's a shame they are gone. A very disappointing first event back from my hiatus from yelp. -
Review from Cara A.
I can't help comparing this Yelp event to the last one with the word "ball" in the name. (The Inaugural Ball, you heathens... what kind of balls were you thinking of?) And, honestly, TYSP paled in comparison with TYIB.
I love yooz, Peter, Jane, and Leighann, and your smiles and enthusiasm were on point, as always. This is no criticism of your hottness or loveliness or Yelpiness.
But. There's the but. Actually there are a few buts:
Bright lights.
Totally gymnasium feel (sans paper decorations and guidance counselors acting as chaperones, of course).
Zero seating.
Scary lions! I mean, lines. Whoa, were there lines.
And: I missed the drama in the men's room.
(Ok, that last one isn't fair.)
You can call me a sourpuss for not giving this event 5 stars, but it just didn't make the grade... -
Review from Jonas M.
Dear Jane/Peter/Leighann:
As you probably have seen from some of the 1- and 2-star reviews, there were quite a few people who did not like the Yelp Snow Ball. To put it quite bluntly, this was not one of the better events this year.
Quite frankly, the Yelp Snow Ball seemed like the awkward, 8th grade mixer held in the school auditorium where everyone danced around each other the entire night. There were few diversions to allay this communal anxiety. The madness of crowds made it difficult for anyone to really get to know each other. The long food lines made people anxious and irritated. The DJ rotation half-heartedly encouraged people to pretend to dance. And the lack of quality booze toward the end of the night made people wish for Yelp flasks instead of Yelp wristbands. However, the dancing Bowlmor Lanes pin provided a consistent source of amusement.
The worst part of being Yelp ambassadors, I suspect, is that you are a maitre d' of an online community whose expectations keep rising for every event you put on. It's a blessing when you receive effusive praise for exceeding people's expectations; it's a bitch when you realize your work for an event is being graded on an arbitrary five-star system, and the capricious opinions of the people you moderate are public domain.
Despite all my blustering criticism, Yelp raised more than $5,000 for the NYC Coalition Against Hunger. That is something that should be recognized and everyone should be grateful for this holiday season. -

Only horribly disgusting, rude people complain about free food and booze.
And only rude people call them out on it on the internet.
Eh, at least I'm not horribly disgusting.
Thanks for your hard work Yelp staff! I left full and quenched with some super cute photo-booth pictures! -

How Yelp saved Christmas (aka "The Boys Bathroom Incident")
Random Yelper dude gets all feisty with the men's bathroom bouncer (yes there was a bathroom bouncer) because he kicked out all the guys to let a group of girls use the can *. Security guard comes over and tells him to leave the Armory.
Yelper gets in a shouting match, and tells the security guard that he's not a real cop. The guard gets all pissed off, because he was a 'Nam Vet or something, and tells the Yelper that he's got purple hearts to prove it.
Then it just gets weird when the guard lifts his pants leg to show off his bullet wound scars. **
---------------------------------
* This included my +1 which is cool because we had a lot of free drinks and she really needed to pee.
** More entertaining than watching the dancing Bowlmor bowling pin -
Review from Matteo R.
- One star for my awesome friends.
In the end, this is the reason why I like Yelp events: the opportunity to spend some quality time with old friends I rarely see, and the chance to make new ones.
- One star for giving me the chance to wear a suit.
I love wearing suits! Unfortunately I don't get that many opportunities to wear one. I would love to see more "dress to impress" events in the future.
- One star for the $5,000 raised for charity.
This alone made the event worthwile. Hopefully this will make a small difference for some less fortunate people this holiday season.
This was the first event of this magnitude I have ever attended, and although some glitches in the organization were to be expected, other flaws were surprising.
I got the opportunity to sample some tasty bites, like shrimp rolls from Luke's Lobster, a fig and goat cheese prosciutto wrap by Scottadito, and some delicious mini-cupcakes a friend brought me while I was stuck in one of the food lines. However, I felt bad for all the non-elite yelpers, since most of the food had already disappeared by the time the doors opened to everybody at 7 pm. What surprised me the most was that basically all the food disappeared at the same time.
I was also surprised that there were no tables were one could mingle and eat or drink: the only choice was to either stand, or to use one of the tables used by the vendors. This made for a cumbersome arrangement, since you ended up getting in the way of both the people distributing food and the people in line for food. Unfortunately the only other option was to sit on the floor...
The very loud live band, combined with the bad acoustics of the room, made having a conversation rather difficult. The best place to have one was by the stairs that lead to the bathrooms...
I am grateful to Jane, Leighann, Peter, and all the other ones behind the scenes for the huge effort they must have put in organizing such a behemoth of an event. Hopefully the next one will be smoother.
I feel like I missed most of the fun, since I didn't see the pantless woman and the melee by the men's bathroom!Listed in: Yelp Elite Events -2010…

ughhhh...
I don't want to blame Peter and Jane and the rest of the Yelp organizers for this. they clearly put a lot of work into it, but somehow it didn't quite click. I feel your pain - I organized a ton of events back in college and I know that sometimes things don't work out.
I know we were supposed to eat beforehand and just grab samples here, which usually works...but there was no food to sample. seriously, I got in at 7 (yes, I am Elite, but my trainer at the gym pushed back my session and I came late) and the lines for food were INSANE. we waited on the taco line for 45 minutes and they RAN OUT. every other line was an insane wait for, ultimately, no food.
for some reason, there was no wait for the booze. needless to say, I was 8 beers in with two pieces of bread in my stomach, and feeling alright.
in addition, there was no real incentive to mingle. I hate to say it, but the small events work, because yeah, if your elbow is in my face, I am probably gonna say something to you. when people are just waiting on a line, they are not really in a mood to talk to each other.
perhaps too many people were invited? I think so every NYC Yelper, plus a guest? this place was big, but we packed it...
I just want to say that my opinion of this event was shared by the group that I had assembled.
on the plus side, while it was all completely random, I ran into a few Yelpers I know! -
Review from Alysha R.
Ok - I'm an IDIOT...
Because I was the first one there (5:15)...saw no one on line...so my sister and I went to grab some tea and light bites across the streeet.. came back at 5:35? and the line was around the effing block! I should have went with my first instincts and kept my brown ass on the line... then I wouldn't have missed out on my Yelp Lunchbox!!! UGGGGH!!!....
But nonetheless.... I thought this was a massive event...felt more like a food festival which was AWESOME.... our Elite hour was great!!! got to talk with a lot of the vendors....and the lines weren't long at all... Met up with my friend Christopher M!! ( hey booooo!!!!)....... and we were all stuck like glue for the evening..... The thing about LARGE spaces like this - is that it loses the intimacy of the smaller events.... maybe I'm selfish to say I wish it wasn't open to regular yelpers.... as once the clock hit 7 - it turned into a madhouse - and you could feel the difference... - BUTTTTTTTTTTTTT - we raised a ton of $$$$ to fight against hunger - and that's way more important than keeping it small and Elite..
Music was OK - could have been more festive.... and as others said... no holiday decorations AT ALL???... I was expecting to see WHITE Snow everywhere!! or some sparkles!!! or a blowing snow machine...lol...something!!! Didnt feel like a snow ball at all :(.... BUT - people!!! people!!! ITS FREE FOOD/DESSERTS/DRINKS/WINE/BEER AND OTHER LIBATIONS - WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING?!!!! HOW OFTEN DO YOU GET INVITED TO EAT FOR FREE FOR 3 HRS? FROM SOME AMAZING PLACES?...
I think some Yelpers just can never be pleased and sound quite spoiled in my opinion...
Thank you to YELP for giving us amazing experiences...and allowing us to bring friends along to your events.....My sister had an awesome time... We had our pictures taken...... I walked up to many people....introduced myself..hugged a few.... molested a few Yelp Staff Members... (Roger B - where are you darling!!!?)....LOL... Wish I met more of my Yelp Friends.... but I had a great time...
Next year.... lets spruce it up and make it more festive...
And maybe not so big........
Lots of love!!!!
your loyal Yelper....

Yooooooooo -- Here's what I saw as a soup server:
Lots of people waiting on line. I don't know why people wait for 20 minutes for a free bite to eat. I liked working there b/c I had a purpose. It was a good excuse to talk to lots of people. Most didn't have name tags on, so I didn't know who I was talking to sometimes. And I can't even see that well, so I had trouble staring at people's chests trying to read the handwriting. And staring for that long can look mischievous, so that's not great.
Sometimes you get in this clouded area where you think you know the person, but are concerned you might be mixing them up with someone else you stalk. It's probably better to just say something, the times I did, if it wasn't them, I did make a new friend.
I did get to visit all the vendors before the event started and I had some of their food with no lines. that was a really good part. I think I will prefer to work this night for now on, if possible.
Yelpers love free food. that's for certain. We had a mailing list so we could send people free sauce and people really jumped on that.
We didn't really have much of a line most of the time. Maybe it was because we served the soup fast. Sometimes while I was pouring I'd look over the line at Luke's Lobster. Why would people wait so long for some shrimp in the bun? The lines take up a lot of room.
There's a ton of girls at these events. It's like 2/3 or better. Add in all the ready, free beer and there should be lots of smiles all around. Asians represent big time here. Most of the people are 25-35, so it seems like a really good demographic for marketers.
My favorite vendor was Bruce Cost. I liked that L'asso was there, they're one of my favs in NYC. I gave away a bunch of Real Pizza of New York iPhone apps, so that was cool. I wanted to talk to L'asso about it, but they were stupid busy.
Good to see lots of my yelp friends. Disappointed I missed Stella DS, Sara, and Steve M!

This was not a ball in any way, shape or form and there was nothing in the way of the holiday spirit to keep my spirits up from wasting a perfectly good cocktail dress and heels. Not even a poinsettia, X-mas tree, menorah?? No decorations, period. Shamon, Yelp!
For those of us that had the pleasure of going to Yelp's Inaugural Ball back in January 2009, this was my expectation for the Snow Ball. The Snow Ball fell extremely short of expectations. Not as advertised. I felt overdressed at the Snow Ball and as I was checking my coat in, I was dismayed that there was no place to sit! Several of my friends had to take their heels off in utter pain and I was one of them!
I was happy to see my friends, but sad to see their looks of disappointment and shock. All of us came dressed up like we were actually going to a ball, but saw most people were dressed in jeans, sneakers, boots. Wow. I was jealous of these people because they got to go to the trade show booths...I mean food sample booths in comfort. To make things worse, the music was just janky! janky! Just noise, not danceable and created a ho-down feel to the already dismal vibe.
Positives: ** They had non-alcoholic drink samples
**My boyfriend rubbed my aching feet when we got
home
** Lots of people I haven't seen in ages were there
** Jim finally received his Christmas bonus: a year long
membership to the Jelly of the Month club! -

I was among the Elites who arrived early so the wait for food was minimal. I got my fill of delicious shrimp roll from Luke's Lobster, pork taco on a freshly made tortilla, non-Ikea Swedish meatballs and other vendor samples--as much as my sausage casing of Spanx would allow.
Disappointing, however, was that once guests shed their outer layers at the super efficient coat check, I saw that many didn't bother to dress up--even though the attire was specified on the invite. Some were more into giving catty stares and making snide comments than making merry. Where were the joy, exuberance and glamor?--all things I expect to find at a venue as grand as the 69th Regiment Armory and at a holiday gathering billed as a "ball."
The event overall was a little bit ghetto (and not in a fabulous way) but If the Yelp Party Planning Committee cut corners so that more money could go to charity, then I'm OK with that. Over $5,000 raised for the NYC Coalition Against Hunger is impressive, so hurray!
It's too bad the vendors started running out of food when the doors opened to non-Elites. Perhaps that was poor organizing. Maybe it was an intentional move to get more people to become Elite. Or it could've been some kind of meta commentary on how so many non-elites in this city go hungry every day.[1]
I still have to thank Jane, Leighann and Peter for putting the event together. It can't be easy pleasing a bunch of whiny, entitled brats like us but I always appreciate the effort. :) I also have to thank the extraordinarily cheerful Yelp volunteers whose friendly smiles restored my faith in humans.
[1] And some go without pants--like the girl who wore pantyhose as leggings and gave us a good view of her skinny thong between bulbous ass cheeks.Listed in: Yelp Elite Events

Yay for Yelp!
Yay to the Yelp Team for their hard work.
Yay for choosing the 69th Regiment Armory. What a large space... plus I also got a free history lesson from a +1. Full of fun facts. It was interesting.
Yay for free food... and REALLY good food too!
Yay for free drinks! Woot.
Yay for me and bf to make a mad dash to every booth as soon as we got there.
Sadly, bf and I didn't get to socialize too much with too many other Yelpers. We said plenty of hellos before making the mad dash to the next booth.
Playing Where's Waldo is hard. Waldo = BF. I think I spent 2 hours trying to find what booth he's at in the sea of people. Boo. Lucky for me, by the time I found him, he was waiting for me with food and ready to move onto the next booth. Yay!
Wished there were more decorations... but it was nice to dress up and be in heels. My feet ache. Yay for me bringing flats to change into.
Wished there were more Yelpers and +1s that dressed up for the occasion.
Yay for raising $5k for Coalition Against Hunger.

I thought yelp organized some great games for this event.
Game 1 --- Find Madhuri.
"I saw her right over there."
"She just past me go that way."
I get a text-- go look by the cakes. I panic, time is running out and I haven't found her. i almost give up, she's not here , this game is rigged.
Finally with a half hour to spare i find her.
Game 2 -- " Hold my drink, woman "
Fairly simple. Hand your drink to a lady while you go to the restroom or play game 1.Goal is to see how many and how long they'll hold it. I got three for about 45 minutes, how did the rest of you do ?
Game 3-- Find the girl with no pants.
Jamel won. We all were astonished.
In comparison to other events this one was okay. A lot of us were expecting something similar to Inaugural Ball and were disappointed.
The bathroom debacle was bizarre. I don't mind women using the men's room but kicking men out so they can ?
Screw that.
Doing the pee-pee dance while urinals sit unused is a sin, or should be.
Did people read the invite ?
Didn't it say dressy ?
Did i see denim cutoffs ?
I still had a great time eating , drinking, catching up with people I haven't seen in a while and playing the above games.

I looked awesome. I see girls and guys giving me eye contact. It was the first event in years, where several yelpers approached me throughout the night. Some of you came up with a big friendly smile and other approached bashfully, and said "Excuse me - but where did you get that lunch box?" I could have sworn, she was checking out my a$$.
Yes - I thought I was walking around the Snow Ball all glam, but no the 8 times someone came up to me was to ask me about the yelp lunch box.
I got a yelp lunch box! Yay! -

Yelp definitely throws the best parties but this one wasn't without its flaws. Perhaps we are a little spoiled and set our expectations high but who can blame us when Yelp throws bash after bash of awesomeness. My non-elite friends had a fantastic time and were impressed that Yelp can churn out a party this big. In fact they had more food than I had despite getting in an hour before them!
In the end, a party is what you make of it and of course the company you're with. One thing I will always be grateful for when it comes to Yelp is the friends I've had the pleasure to meet and these events to bring us together. Jane, Peter & Leighann, your efforts and hard work are always appreciated. The fact that I can't remember much after 8pm is a testament to the great time I had.Listed in: Speaking in Code

Thanks Yelp!!!
I ended up getting to the event awkwardly early but was lucky enough to be let in to wait inside (cause as you know, it was FREEZING, and I would have froze outside for that long). I was one of the first ten or so let in, allowing me the pleasure of a line-less feasting on delicious samples. So, alphabetically...
Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory: I LOVE ice cream, but alas, not peppermint ice cream. Skipped.
Bubble Lounge: Not sure what they had/did...
Energy Kitchen: Selected the "spicy" thai wrap...no taste of peanut sauce, no spice.
Intoxicating Confections: Not one for alcohol+desserts, aside from tiramisu...Skipped.
Mama Mexico: Was this the one with the tacos? If so, mine came out WAY too greasy. I'm hoping the rest fared better.
Meze Grill: Falafel was good, hummus ok, chips were off
Mooncake Foods: Got the shrimp salad...mmm...cute containers, too.
Nine Cakes: They looked pretty, didn't feel like having cake...
Ovelia: Before coming, bf mentioned that he wanted steak. I didn't think there'd be any at the event, but there was! He liked it, I didn't try it..
Qdoba: Meh..
Slice: Sorry, this was gross.. all of the pizzas looked awful. I had the pesto pizza, and it tasted as bad as it looked.
Smorgas Chef: Bf LOVED everything they had. He kept talking about the salmon and now wants to go there.
Wanna Have Cookie: Where?! Now I want a cookie...If this was the one with the whoopie pies, yum!
Spot Dessert Bar: Yum.
Graffiti Food and Wine Bar: Don't remember what they had...
Metaphor Restaurant: see above
L'asso: Tried the mushroom pizza....eh, not for me.
Luke's Lobster: I wish they had lobster, but the mini shrimp roll was good.
Palo Santo: Hmm..can't remember.
Mercadito: Looked pretty fancy compared to a lot of the other stuff there, but didn't really stand out.
Fat Radish: Maybe I just don't like the look of square foods...
Scottaditto Osteria Toscana: Goat cheese! Proscuitto! Balsamic glaze! Figs! Amazing. Bf also loved it.
Hill Country Chicken: Didn't try..
Overall, awesome!! This was better than Village Voice's event that I had to pay at least $25 for (I went two years ago and it was also at the Armory).
One suggestion for next year: dumplings.
Thanks Jane & Peter! -

Sure it was one crowded event. Sure the venue wasn't as prettied up as I expected. Sure the music was LOUD and the acoustics weren't good. Sure the lighting wasn't great - (On the plus side though, it was easier spotting friends under brightwhitelights than romantic mood lighting. I know, I'm the eternal optimist).
And sure we had to wait in line, but hey look, I wait in lines all the time. At Cinton St. Baking Company, at that crowded Whole Foods, and heck even at Hale and Hearty for my mediocre soup. At the end of those lines, I usually have to pay. Here there was stuff. Free stuff. Often good stuff.
I got to the event at 6:45, got a few bites to eat, drank Shiraz, made silly faces in the photobooth, met all my lovely yelp buddies, met a few new yelpers, it was all good.
At the end of it all, together we raised 5 nice big juicy thousand for the hungry. Hurrah! Happy Holidays, everyone!
P.S. What's all this about hating on the well-dressed people? Sheesh, that's totally lame business. All of you who put on your black ties and/or high heels, you're awesome.

Not at all a ball. If the event had been marketed as a tasting event my expectations would not have been so high, but when you call something a Snow Ball and tell me to dress to impress the fact that the room was not at all dressed, in fact looked like a high school gym with all the lights on and no where to sit was a total downer. The most festive thing in the room was the red umbrella on the ice cream stand, and that's just sad. I wore freakin' heels and when I bent to take them off while standing on line for an hour for the photo booth, I slipped on someone's spilled something and ate it, also much like my memories of gym class.
I think spending some money on a few rented red lights and a fake Christmas tree, instead of some of those fancy yelp track jackets could have done wonders.
There has to be a better way to feed 2000 people than having each vendor make plates to order. I felt like I was an audience member for a Top Chef episode where both teams fail because they can't feed the crowd in time. Once again, such a big deal was made about how we should eat and whatnot before coming so as to not overrun the food vendors was for not, as there was no option to remove oneself from the food finding frenzy, cause there was no where else to go. Since there was no where to socialize or sit with my friends during a three hour event, all we did was wander from line to line. The music wasn't really danceable, so the whole cut out a center of the room for a "dance floor" was just a weird choice.
The peppermint cone from the ice cream guy and shrimp roll from Lukes were tasty, and the photos that came out of the photo booth were great pictures, but those three things could not save this evening. Also there was free booze, which was appreciated, but all that did was give me a two buck chuck-over this am, so... -

I have to say, but this is the first time that I am giving a Yelp Event a 4 Star rating. It just needed that something extra, but I had an awesome time!
I knew that this place was gonna be packed quick, especially with the line. It was a cold night out and not it's not fun to wait in the cold. I got there about 5:30pm and was near the front of the line.
The doors opened at 6pm and the anticipation was over. I saw a lot of new faces handling the check-in table. Then I saw the lovely lady in red, Jane K and Peter D. Who looked sharp in his suit.
The coat check was the first stop. I had a big, heavy coat that I didn't wanna lug around. Coat in, Beer NOW! A lot of Elites in one building. It was time for some good food and some mingling. I met a few people throughout the night, but stayed normally stayed with the regulars that I am always with.
My routine of the night was making my way around seeing people and trying out the food. I kept on running into Nate C and we signal our beer bottles and say Hello. I was asked a lot of times where I picked up my awesome lunchbox that was attached to my hip. I told em' "perks of being an Elite and ealry" How many beers have I had?
Bests of the night- The wraps from Energy Kitchen, Shrimp Rolls from Luke's Lobster, the Prosciutto wrapped Goat Cheese and the Peppermint Ice Cream from The Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. The line was long to get a delicious scoop, but it was well worth it.
The not so good- The square orange/white things from Fat Radish. I think they were carrot and radishes. It was in the middle section. It wasn't really that tasty, it was missing some flavor.
Once 7pm hit it was like the flood gates opened up. The rest of the Yelpers came in. All you can get was drinks. The lines for food was long, Which was fine by me. The Elite hour got me to taste everything and all I wanted was drinks. New faces and Beer... That made my night.
Always a pleasure seeing Jenn L, Catherine J, Sandy C, Wing L, Will C, Rich W, Jimmy & Jenny, Isabella W & Marco C, Elaine & Albert W (after all these months!) Rich B, Louis P (great meeting you!)
My Beer Buddies, Justin B & Nate C!
If I forgot some of you, sorry. Swarms of people and alcohol makes me forget!
All in all it was a great event. Good food and good times. A lot of money was raised for a good cause and that's the important thing.
Special Thanks to Peter D, Jane K and Leighann F. (have fun in London!) It was a great way to end my first year as an Elite.
I can't wait to see what 2011 has to offer. Great food. Awesome food and of course.... Wonderful People!Listed in: Elite Events

1 star because there was no snow.
2nd star for raising money for the NYC Coalition Against Hunger.
I'll throw in another star for giving me a reason to wear my dress.
I've already expressed my other complaints to Peter D. in person. -

Wow, reading everyone's review, I was glad I got there early and I was like the 3rd person in line. Got in, got food and I event got a Yelp Stick....I was soo close in getting a Yelp Lunch box but I didn't know if I could have taken one...DAMN!!!!...
Anywhoo Thanks Jane, Leighann and Peter for organizing this big event...
I think I got to try most of the food and I ended being pretty full from it.
I am not a sweet eating type of person but Nine Cakes was most memorable...I want more Chocolate Chile cake!!!
It was great meeting new people and seeing some familiar faces. Now I must go nominate myself for elite 2011!!! LOL -

"Oh the humanity!!!"
I wasn't expecting a combo high school gymnasium and blimp hangar. The music was way too loud and people weren't feeling the band. The lights were way too bright. There was no place to sit or set your food/drink down. I kept wondering why I had to wear a suit for this. The food was good if you could get near the tables, which was tough after 7:00. Ah well, they can't all be winners. -

First, hat's off to Jane, Peter, Leighann and their Yelp crew for organizing a gargantuan event with oodles of food sponsors, liquor sponsors and managing to raise $5,000+ for the Coalition Against Hunger!
That being said, I'm going to have to say it was pretty meh as an event. The gymnasium was not decked out for the winter dance yo - instead it looked like we were in some kind of random job fair. I'm not a fan of lines, never have been, so I tended to skip them all. However the Ithaca brew I was able to get at was pretty awesome as was the made-from-real-ginger soda. The latter helped shoo away any tummy troubles there might have been.
Alas, I didn't really get much food - I think the vendors should have prepared for 3 times the amount they thought were coming, and maybe had some staff circulate with items? Might have cut back on the lines, just saying.
Still, as with most Yelp events, the cherry on the top is running into Yelp peeps I know and chit-chatting with them. Favorite conversations of the evening were with Sara M. and Jamel O (radio show + "she's not wearing any pants!"). I also got to hang out with my favorite +1 ever, so that's always a good time.
I guess with our population exponentially growing, this will come to be the norm for an extra-large event? -

I really needed to use the restroom and ended up going to the event early. When I arrived Radford T pulled me in line and later Tony F popped out of nowhere. Richard L joined later and it seemed like the people I normally see at the gym were all out tonight. Richard L joked that we were de-abbing tonight.
One thing led to another and I found myself eating from table to table. Lines were sparse when we got in and we got our fill. When Energy Kitchen pushed a sandwich on me that made me cross my Uncle Line. Richard L stuffed the sandwich in his knapsack for me for later.
We went to get a hand massages at the Chelsea gym table and made some new friends online. A bunch of strangers and Yelpers snapped my photo and I later found out I was labeled on Facebook as "Michael L" getting a hand job. Ugggh!
We hopped in the shutterbooth and got into a bunch of odd poses ordered out by Radford T. He seemed to be very experienced in this setting and we ended up with a great set of pictures that everyone wanted.
Nine Cakes was my favorite for the night! I'm also happy to have tried. Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. I always get turned off by the lines in the summer.
Great event, great fun! Nice to see old friends and make new ones!
Thank you Yelp for throwing a great holiday party! I am happy to defect from http://chowhound.com!

Review from Jenn L.
If you come to a Yelp event, you should know that you're not going for just the sweet tastes of food and free booze that Yelp staff work so hard to put together for the event - you're going for the amazing company and to heart a couple of the sponsors that support these events.
I walked in only to be greeted by the amazing Peter D. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a special present just for me - a Yelp shot glass! Woo hoo!
My plus one and I checked our coats and donated a couple bucks to charity while we were there. We noted that some people had really gone and dressed up (moi too!), which was a shame because it wasn't really a "ball" in the traditional sense. I had hoped that it was going to be a dimmer night. Then we popped into lines and started a tour with our taste buds. Although some of the sponsors ran out of food or drink before we got to the front of them, we were still able to sample the deliciousness of Smorgas Chef, Slice, Mooncake Foods, Luke's Lobster, Fat Radish, Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, Wanna have a Cookie, Spot Dessert Bar, Palo Santo, and a couple others. What excellence!
Leighann popped by to say, "Hi" to a group of us who were well on our way to taking advantage of the free beer and three buck Chuck. She proudly showed off the present that Ron C had brought her.
By this time, most of the food had run out and people were starting to disperse. What's a girl to do? I grabbed another couple sips while co-mingling with some of my favorite people. Jane stopped by on her way to pack some of the decor up and, of course, I had to thank her profusely for all the hard work she and the rest of the Yelp team had done setting the event up since 8AM!
Sadly, none of the sponsors were table and chair providers. That really would have made my night. Anyhoo, it was all fine and dandy until Will C decided to explode a Miller Lite all over the floor. Sigh. At the end of the night, I definitely brought a couple goodies home with me. What fun! Well... carrying them home wasn't fun. But.. yeah... thanks for the freebies, Sponsors!
And a HUGE thank you to the Yelp team for putting this event together!Listed in: Yelp has the best parties

Review from Lisa A.
How on earth did I completely miss the woman without pants? And, how did I not witness the boys' bathroom "incident"?
These questions plague me....but, as usual, I digress.
Do you know what one of my favorite parts of the evening was? Meeting up with an old friend, (one of my first Yelp friends) David P. who came out of hiding for the event. Well, that and Brian's ever-present wine colored corduroy blazer. Okay, and Mike S. actually getting to meet David for the very first time. Oh, and how about the beautiful women of Yelp? Cara (quack!) Madeline, Miss Joolz, Nina, Mo, Jayne, Briana, Janeen, Molly, Oriana, Kelly, Peter D.. Oh, whoops. Sorry, Peter. (I was hoping to see you dressed as an elf. Ah, maybe next time).
Free wine and champagne? Why yes, I imbibed. Falafel, spicy hummus and pita chips? Yes, I had that too. I was sad that I didn't get to partake in any sweets though. Tons of vendors, yet no place to sit or stand and put one's drink while one stuffed their face. The band was a wee bit loud, with sound bouncing around, and I found myself yelling to be heard (apologies to everyone I talked to! also sorry about my garlic/falafel breath.) Ah, I made due. I had fun. I got to go to the 69th Regiment Armory, which is a historical building and home of The Fighting Irish which is kinda cool.
It was nice to get dressed up and see my friends. I'm also thankful it was too cold for Chun to take off his shirt.
There. I think I've named dropped enough here.
Props to Jane, Peter, Leighann and the entire Yelp crew. -
Review from Sara M.
I'm not really sure what people are complaining about. I had a great time. My non-elite friends were able to come and bring a guest so I had my whole crew there. I got there early. Super early. My coat check number was 1. So I got to sample everything. But when I wanted to go back for seconds and thirds I didn't find the lines to be so terrible. Maybe it's because I skipped everyone? Sorry about that. I become rude when I'm a little tipsy. I didn't get to see a lot of you people, it was super crowded so I kinda just stuck w/ my people. Who I kept losing. My feet hurt, so I wish there was somewhere to sit.
Decorations would've been nice but I liked the bands. And I didn't wake up with a hangover so I'm going to say SUCCESS!
Thanks Peter D and Jane and the Yelp crew. Good times yo.
UPDATE: +1 star for the girl with no pants who I didn't get to see but who was there nonetheless. -
Review from Sandy C.
This is the first event where I didn't have any liquor in my system.
I did get to try some awesome original flavor ginger ale. For someone who absolutely hates ginger, it was darn good. I also had some of my favorite green tea w/honey from Honest Tea.
I was greeted by a dressed up Peter D. I saw Jane & Leighann running around and they too looked festive.
I didn't get to try a lot of foods since I got there late from work but I did get to see all the familiar faces I've seen at past Yelp Elite events and let me just say that everyone I bumped into looked awesome. Chun & Matteo looking spiffy, Rachel looking festive & sexy in her cute red bowtie dress. Catherine looked hawt in her purple criss cross back dress, and Mabel was just shimmering in her gold dress. Everyone was a sight to see!
The lines were long and intertwining everywhere. I checked in but missed the gifts they were giving out. I had hoped to get in some photos with my friends at the photo booth but no such luck.
It was a ginormous event that was overwhelming. I wish there were more trees & lighting but perhaps there wasn't because they didn't want to offend anyone's religion. -
Review from Coty S.
I came in early and had a totally different experience than my +1 husband who came in late. Even when getting there early, the line was still wrapped around the building, but moved fast.
Even inside it was a line issue for most, but I have been to many NYC street fairs and have waited in a Hakata Ton Ton line before to know that the payoff can sometimes be worth it. I was able to eat a bit of food at this event, only because I freakin ran for it and got as much as I could before the crowds came in. If I would have had fun and socialized, then that would not have happened. I had plenty of time to have fun after I was stuffed.
Funniest Moment:
Radford and I tasting the cold pumpkin cube and looking at each other in terror.
Happiest Moment:
When I was able to taste a roll from Luke's Lobster, FOR FREE! Even though it was shrimp and not lobster.
Saddest Moment:
When I had to leave to go home. But, I did manage to get bubble tea at Midori across the street before getting on the train.
My favorite booth was Nine Cakes, I must have tried their cake like 5 times, but at least I did not waste their forks. L'asso's stinky cheese pizza with thin sliced apples was the bomb! The Ginger Beer/Soda burned so good. I left very full!
I was not able to brave the taco line, meatball line, or ice cream line. The photo booth line was line again, so I was not able to partake.
What made the experience great?
Food and beverage. The Yelpers and CM's that came up to say hello. It is nice to feel like part of something, awwww... And, that Yelp was able to raise money for charity.
Some annoying things?
Some businesses were really fast, and some were just weird. Like the pizza place only brought 6 pizzas, so they had to go and get more. Duh! We are Yelpers, we like to eat. The lines were so long that you could not walk around them, like the taco line. The music was so loud that I could not hear what people were saying, and they thought that I was being a jerk because I would make them repeat everything. I am used to going clubbing and listening to loud music, but this was difficult.
I hope that the response was also good for the businesses that donated their time and inventory, I know that they will get a response from me. Thanks to the awesome organizers for making it happen!Listed in: Yelp Events & UYE Events

Ileana, Lindsey, and I decided to go to the Yelp event on Thursday, since it was the Snow Ball night. The atmosphere was a bit congested for my taste, but with dollar photos for anyone wearing a mustache, I was willing to settle. We got to talking to an old-timer and he told us that if you say the word "sardoodledom," and snap your fingers 9 times at the bartender, he'll pour you the secret house special. Unfortunately, I must have only snapped 8.5 times since the drink I received had me cursing Joshua Christ before passing out on the St. Patrick's Cathedral steps.
Ahh fuck, you caught me. I copied the napkin mad libs. Honestly though, one star is for Lindsey B. and one star is for Ileana S., because without these girls, this night would have been total shit. I didn't eat a single thing because the lines were ridiculous (plus many vendors ran out of food quickly) and I didn't even catch a slight buzz. Usually, my goal of any night is to drink until I'm in a good place and dance my little feet off. I couldn't even get into the music. The only good things about this night were watching the Bowlmor bowling pin break it down on the dance floor and the photobooth with the props. It's too bad, because I was really looking forward to this! -
Review from Sandy C.
I used to go to school around here and had always seen this building, but never stepped foot into this place. I found out where the Snow Ball was held was actually the fifth floor, meaning there's 4 more floors below us! That's a pretty interesting fact to know.
So I got there early and there was already a line, but luckily I was accompanied with familiar faces battling the cold before entering. Once upon entering, the place was really spacious, but not very festive. My plus one and I tried to try all the foods that were there, which I think we've gotten to most. Everything was pretty good, but I really like the peppermint ice cream at the right corner! Wished I had a second scoop hehe.
So the entire night it was a hit or miss running into familiar faces. I got to see some of them, but mostly it was just once and then they were lost in the sea of people. Then there were some that were there that I did not even see, probably because I've waited 45 minutes for the photo booth lol. And by the time I was done with the photo booth, many places ran out of food already. Although I missed seeing people and trying the foods, it was worth it to take pictures with my awesome girl friend at the booth!
The bathroom line was a killer! The women's line was really long, there was a total of 5 stalls, but one was out of order, so there's really just 4. The men's room had like 10 stalls plus urinals, so women started to line up for the men's room. Haha and that guy who probably had to pee really badly started to argue with the security. I really think he drank one too many booze, maybe he should've just grabbed an empty bottle and take care of his business at the corner.
It was a fun night seeing familiar faces, eating, hugging...yea one of you huggers stole a button from my blouse! But overall, I had a great time, thanks Yelp for another awesome event! =) -
Review from Jess L.
Such an amazing way to end the Yelp year. Thanks to all the vendors - your delicious treats and sweet drinks made the event particularly memorable. Great to see all the Yelpers in person, too.
I'd say this was more like a "convention" than a "ball." I was grateful to have the hour before the rush of people - but even that meant lots of lines, no dancing, and rushes to get the [truthfully really tasty] food and [graciously generous] drinks.
I'd give this event three stars, but I'm going to knock it up a star for the great quality of the vendors, generous portions, and general holiday cheer! -

Manhattan, NY
Snow Ball! Dig it! I think I still have food coma.
I rushed to the location and arrived probably around 5:45 and the line had already winded around the block. A couple of my friends and my +1, new Yelper and my gym buddy, Tony F showed up a little whie later to wait in line with me. Check-in was quick and painless. I dropped my coat off at coat check as well as $10 for the NYC Coalition Against Hunger, and I quickly abandoned my friends who had been waiting in line with me so I can go eat me some food and drink me some drinks.
There were no lines at all in the beginning, and since I eat like a convict (meaning I can be like The Flash when I eat), I was able to hop from table to table eating all the food in a matter of minutes. I think I probably covered about half the tables before lines started forming.
Familiar faces started appearing and I was happy to mingle with other Yelpers. Just like all other Yelp events, the best thing about them was having the chance to chat with and catch up with my fellow Yelpers. There were so many of you that I'm not even going to try to name everyone I talked to!
The second best thing about Yelp events is the free food! The lines were getting pretty long after 7pm but that didn't stop me from eating more while socialising with everybody whom I was running into. My favourite tables were probably Hill Country, Palo Santo, and Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. Hill Country's chicken wrap had a great mixture of flavours that had me going back for seconds. Palo Santo's taco was just amazing and I wish they had a location closer to me. And while I usually don't like mint in my sweets, that ice cream from Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory was delicious.
More eating and chatting later, I realised I forgot to check-in to the event. And what do you know? The Yelp Check-In Offer screen popped up on my phone, telling me that I can go redeem a free gift! I knew by this time all the swag was gone but I decided to go mess with Jane and asked for a gift anyway. LOL!
Great job, Yelp NYC! Jane, with that smile that can melt a man's heart. Leighann, looking hot in that dress. And Peter, all official-like in his suit. You guys pulled off a great event once again.Listed in: Yelp Events

Review from Elle P.
I had a very lovely time at the Snow Ball, which shows that it paid to be at the head of the line. Thanks, Ming! You can be my +1 anytime.
I loved loved loved the ginger ale. It had a very strong ginger flavor, which made it more like ginger beer than ginger ale (BIG PLUS). I also loved the chocolate whoopie pie from WannaHavaCookie. I'm not even a fan of whoopie pies. It was the perfect chocolate bite. I also really liked the mini chocolate cupcake from Intoxicating Confections. It had a fudgey bite to it, which made it more interesting than a regular cupcake. The soft buttery roll from Luke's Lobster was divine. Mmm. . . so nice that I had it twice. Yes, twice, because we were there EARLY so there was a very short line. :D
It was a bit of a kamikaze event for me. Said hi and not much else to tons of people. I was focused on getting my food before the mad rush of crowd came. It was a good strategy. I had fun. Thanks, Leighann, Jane, Peter, and the rest of the Yelp staff for a fun foodie night.
