I ordered delivery for the first time eating The Works: lasagna and an insanely delicious buffalo chicken pizza. The food tasted fresh and flavorful and I was super impressed with the quality of all the food. I will definitely order it again. . . .
The only drawback is that I ordered delivery and I don't live more than 4 miles away and it took almost an hour and a half to arrive. If you plan ahead, it's worth the wait! -
Review from Brittany R.

Four stars for The Works because truly, I am a fan. Love the pizza so much for its light and fresh pizza sauce (if you've ever had the panzerotti at Mamma Mia, the pizza sauce at The Works has the same sort of texture and flavor as the tomato dipping sauce for the panzerotti) and mini pepperonis crisped to perfection. The pizzas are large, as are the slices. While the crust is on the thin side, I would never consider it crispy. It's just the right amount of chewy without being a jaw workout. The salads are a good size and fresh. We love the pizza so much, we haven't had a chance to try the wings, burgers, soup, etc. but last night when I picked up out pie, the burger smelled amazing. They have a great variety of desserts as well. Milk shakes, cookies, and layer cakes (last night there were slices of red velvet and chocolate fudge).
The shop itself is large enough for indoor seating, as well as the shared patio. Great place for lunch on workday with their slice/burger and beverage deals. There's a really good busy vibe during the lunch hour which is balanced with a real local feel in the evening hours and on weekends. Service is quick, the guys that work here are nice, and they deliver!
Give it a try! Real moderately priced for some good pizza and fresh ingredients! -
Review from Kate G.
I know I said "Never again" in my last review, but I lied!
Extremely impressed with customer service at The Works. Over the weekend, I ordered a pizza from here that was rather disappointing. The owner contacted me almost right away with genuine concern about the experience. He was extremely friendly and accommodating and convinced me to give them another try, so I went ahead and ordered tonight.
In our order, we received:
- 1 cheese pizza: The pizza today was better than last time, for sure. The crust had a better flavor and texture. I didn't get broccoli on it this time as well, which left more room to taste the cheesiness. Hubby agreed that this pizza tasted better than the previous pizza. I will say that even though the pizza was much better than the first time, it's not my absolute favorite pizza in the world.. but because they do deliver and because it is pretty yummy, I can definitely see myself ordering it again.
- Honey garlic wings: I'm a vegetarian, so hubs got to enjoy these himself. He says that they were tender and sweet with a slight zing to them. I think he actually finished the entire order of them before I finished my first slice of pizza.
- Veggies (celery & carrots) with ranch: Hubs said that these were a really nice cleanser between all of the meat and carbs that he chowed down on. I also enjoyed them, as they were fresh and delicious.
- French Fries: These were AMAZING. If I became allergic to pizza by freak accident tomorrow, I would probably still come back here just to eat these delicious potato treats. I'm regretting not ordering them the first time.. and actually, I don't even think I ordered them this time! The owner just threw them in for us!
- Breadsticks: These were yummy! Whenever I have a craving for breadsticks, I admittedly run in to Pat & Oscars and order a soda while munching on their breadstick freebies.. bad habit, I know. But I really liked these! I ordered 6 of them, and they are GIANT. We will be eating breadsticks for a few days. Oh, they came with a really yummy marinara. I'm usually pretty picky with my marinara, and was pleasantly surprised here.
- 2 liter of Pepsi: I ordered one, and they threw in another! Sheesh! Talk about being spoiled into a diabetic coma! I love it!
Okay. Even though I had a bad experience the first time that I ordered from here, I am still really impressed. I'm glad that I went ahead and ordered from The Works again and tried more off the menu, which is super diverse. They have quite a bit more than pizza here.
They really know how to take care of their customers here and how to make a bad experience almost disappear from your memory. The food was definitely good this time around. I can't stress enough how important I find customer service to be. Some of my favorite places around San Diego (such as Alforon and Chin's) are so near and dear to my heart not only because of the good food, but the fact that I am treated like a queen every time I walk in the doors.
I am giving 4 stars right now, with the promise that I will order from here again, and if they impress me HALF as much as they did tonight with the customer service, then I will go ahead and bump them up to a 5.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Thomas N.
Good place to get pizza in the area if you don't want to buy from a big chain. I haven't had buffalo chicken pizza since I finished school in NY so I wanted to try it out at this place and it didn't disappoint. I liked that the pizza wasn't ridiculously greasy where when you fold it in half it doesn't run down your hand. The place is really clean and has lots of outdoor seating. I've also tried their supreme pizza which also tastes pretty good. The veggies didn't taste like they were from the week before and got thrown on top before they went bad. Prices for a slice are reasonable.
Overall:
-Pros: Good pizza, good place to grab a quick bite to eat
-Cons: None at this point -
Review from Angela A.

First visit I had a slice of Mom Says Eat Your Spinach and a slice of Margherita pizza. Both slices were huge, thin crust, with plenty of toppings. These are not "fast food" pizzas. They were not greasy, the cheese was not the plastic like cheese you get at some establishments. The ingredients were fresh and not over cooked. They are hand tossed (watched the guy tossing the dough while waiting for my slices) and the sauce is not loaded with sugar.
Second visit - BBQ Bacon Cheddar Burger served on an egg bun and as some of the other reviews have mentioned the burgers do not come with fries. I ordered a side of fries. I loved this burger!! It was a good size burger with a thick slice of cheddar and enough bacon to cover the burger. It juicy and did not resemble a hockey puck (always a plus). The BBQ sauce was not overly sweet (see a theme here I hate restaurants that make everything sweeter thinking that makes it taste better). Our group also shared an order of Original Buffalo NY wings which everyone agreed actually tasted like Buffalo wings and since the majority of this group is from Upstate NY they know what they are talking about.
Third visit - Meat Lasagna with breadsticks and marinara sauce. The breadsticks were served hot, they were soft and fluffy and I really did not need to eat it but it was so good I could not stop myself. The lasagna, again the sauce was not sweet, the cheese again was not tough but melty, and it was hot but not overcooked or burnt on the edges.
Overall five stars because the food is better then what you would normally find at a casual restaurant and a lot better than what you would find at any fast food joint. The price is justified for the quality of the food. The service is excellent, if you sit outside they bring the food out to you...no need to keep going back and forth checking to see if your order is up. Next time I am in San Deigo I will be going back for more :) -

I was looking to get a lot of pizza for the hungry guys at home, and decided to give this place a try, since they were on my way.
I was in a hurry, and happened to walk in while they were filming a commercial for the place. I ended up buying the pizzas that they were using as props, since they were just coming out of the oven (so if you see their commercial, those are my pizzas, and they were yummy!)
The pizzas are huge, and the toppings, sauce, dough, and cheese are all good quality. The side of fries was huge, and nice and crispy, and they gave me a free drink since I waited while they filmed the pizzas coming out of the oven a couple times in a row.
The owner/manager (not sure which) was even nice enough to help me carry everything out to the car.
My husband and our friend both praised the pizza (and all three of us have worked in pizza places in our younger days, so we know pizza pretty well). We will definitely be back. -

We ordered delivery from this place for the fist time on Saturday. We usually order pizza from NYPD or a couple of other places, but everything has been a bit blah and/or hit and miss lately, so we figured we'd check this place out. We were pleasantly surprised by pretty much everything from the quality of ingredients to the choices available.
We ordered a Works pizza, which was HUGE and very good, the garlic honey wings were very tasty, most definitely the best wings I have ever had from a pizza place and we also ordered a slice of chocolate and a slice of cheese cake, which were both also delicious. The delivery was pretty quick and the pizza came with Parmesan cheese and red peepers in the box, which was awesome, because we forgot to ask! :) -

I give this three and a half stars, I think.
I've had two different burgers, one soup, and two salads from here, so I think I'm equipped to yelp now.
Here goes nothin:
Burgers - the original deluxe burger (I think it's called that..)
- plain simple beef pattie, much bigger than you'd get at In-N-Out.. all the fixings: tomato, lettuce, mayo, ketchup, onion; of course, you get the choice of which to leave on or out. The bun is a little strange, but not in a bad way, it's fluffy, almost like.. I don't know, brioche? It's just different than any other fast food bun I've had. Fluffy, yeah, just.. fluffy. Floofy floof. Good "special sauce" though.
The second one I've had is the Some Like it Hot burger. Now, I like this already because S.L.I.H. is one of my all time favorite movies.
The burger? Very tasty, spicy, good quality pepperjack; it's pretty much the cheaper equivalent to Island's popular Kilauea burger.
Overall, I'd give their burger system a 3. Decent, interesting buns, somewhere better than Carl's Jr, not quite as good as Islands. I'm definitely interesting in exploring more of them, so that is a very good sign.
I really dislike their salads - so disappointing! It's the standard crap salad: a few sad tasteless tomatoes, blah tasteless generic lettuce, stingy sprinkles of cheese.. pass on these. You'd get a better salad prepackaged from the grocery store.
I don't mean to dine and whine, but I do have one more gripe: on various occasions, they have been "out" of various things.. steamed veggies, cilantro lime vinagrette, olives..
Not exactly essentials, but annoying nonetheless. I feel like saying, well, there's a Ralphs across the parking lot.. want me to run and get you a can of olives so you can put them on my salad..??
Ack, and it's always FREEZING inside! Only have been able to order to go, because I prefer not to get frostbite as I take my first bite. -

Here at the office we phone in food orders A LOT...well, phone ordering is not their forte. Our order was not complete - burgers were missing lettuce tomato - the BBQ burger was even missing the BBQ sauce! When I called to inquire I was placed on eternal hold, which was not cool considering I was at work and just wanted to let them know what was wrong with the order.
Overall though, the pizza and salad we ordered were FANTASTIC...that made up for the other boofs. Oh and the delivery man was very nice and friendly -

I just tried these guys for the first time last week and the pizza was great. If you're looking for a thin crust authentic NY style pizza joint, this is the spot to check out. The guys were cool and delivery was quick. I will definitely be back soon. If you haven't tried them yet, give them a shot, you will be happy you did.

Always looking for a good burger and fries, saw this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Got the Classic Burger. Good burger, nice egg bun. Fries were average+. Thick cut but not crispy enough for my taste. $8 a bit much compared to other places. Not bad, but will look around for another burger place. Will probably come back for pizza another time based on reviews by others on Yelp. Surprisingly empty for a Friday at lunch time.

After writing my first review, the owner sent me a message giving me a credit for the wrong priced item and to give his place another chance. I finally did on Sunday and the service was really good. The order taker repeated everything I ordered, gave me the price, and the service was speedy and quick. I had the breadsticks, two slices of pizza, and the meat lasagna (which the owner told me to get). The breadsticks were really good, the meat lasagna was on point, but the pizza slices were a it bland, but I kind of expected that since it probably wasn't right from the oven and was probably sitting for a while. Overall, I really enjoyed the food and service. The owner really knows how to make people happy and make sure his business is one of the best out there.

Sorry, but I found this place weak. Two visits: The burger was a big disappointment; I have no connection to Jack in the Box or Smashburger, but either would have been a better result, not to mention a better value. The pizza slice from the other visit was mediocre and served lukewarm.
I don't know reviewer Tod B., but I agree with his take on it: there's a lack of real care whether you enjoy your experience or not. And, there's a big push to give you takeout and not have you hang around. I get the impression the store primarily wants to be a delivery pizza place, since there's a shortage of those in the area. -
Review from David H.
I ordered the pizza slice, side item and drink for $7.38. It's a large slice of pizza. The pizza was thin and crispy (New York style). I was impressed. It was a rather tasty pizza. I had mine with pepperoni and mushroom. First time here. I'll be back when I'm in the area.

I really want to like this place. It's walking distance from where I work. I've been here maybe 5 times. The food tastes good - I haven't had the burgers, but the pizza and salads are tasty. My hesitation to give them more stars is due to their care in completing an order. There have been times when I got back to my desk to find that I was not given salad dressing.
Today I wanted a slice of Margarita pizza. They did not have basil. Instead of asking if I wanted it without and maybe comping me a drink, the manager/owner walks out of the store without saying a word to me (the customer). A minute goes by and the cashier tells me he went to Ralphs for basil. I did not want to wait so I took another slice of another type of pizza. No biggie, but I did not like the way it was handled. And didn't you know you had no basil???
Getting a salad takes a while. I've ordered the granny smith apple, chicken and walnut salad and holy crikey, it takes about 5 minutes and then I see why. The apple has been cut in such a way that it is ridiculous! Chop up the apple - this isn't Top Chef here! But then I taste the goat cheese/chicken/apple/walnut/salad combo and all is forgiven. Until next time. -

I'm from NY and have been in SD for about 2 years and was still looking for a good pizza place. I have stopped looking! The works hits the nail on the head. The pizza was way better than some of the others I've found in the area. Good crispy (but not too crispy) crust, the sauce was delicious and a good amount of cheese on it. We got the original Buffalo NY wings and they tasted pretty close to the actual originals.
I'd recommend it to anyone! We'll be back!! -

Pretty darn impressed with this place! The pizza is thin and crispy but not burnt, and I had (and loved) a mix of ricotta cheese, spinach and tomatoes. The lunch meal (I think it's a lunch thing) included a drink and a side. All the sides were a hefty size...salad, garlic bread, spaghetti, some other options I think...it's just all goodness! Good customer service and very clean interior. Hope they keep it up!

I came here on a Friday night with my pregnant best friend who had been craving burgers all day long. We found this place through UrbanSpoon and decided to give it a shot.
Customer Service: The older gentleman that was behind the counter seemed a little frazzled and got distracted quite easily but other than that he was extremely nice and accommodating. He even charged me less for the cup of soup that I had ordered.
Food Quality: I ordered the BBQ Bacon Cheddar Burger. It comes with a 1/3 pound 100% Certified Angus Beef that is supposedly "hand-formed" daily. I thought the size of the burger was decent and my stomach felt satisfied after I was finished. The one thing that I noticed was my burger was not juicy, but a bit on the dry side. I didn't mind too much because I asked for an extra side of BBQ sauce (which is the perfect mix of sweet and tangy) to make up for the lack of "juiciness" (for lack of a better word). I also ordered a cup of their "Soup of the Day" which happened to be South West Chicken, initially I thought it was going to be a cream-based soup but it turned out to actually be a tomato broth with pulled chicken, vegetables, corn and beans. I was pleasantly surprised with the soup, it wasn't too heavy on the sodium and tasted just as great when I reheated it the day after. But, I have to say the winner of my meal had to be the EGG BUN. It was absolutely delicious.
Price: I'm not sure why people were complaining about how expensive it was. My friend and I couldn't stop talking about how inexpensive it is compared to many restaurants that serve burgers (aside from fast food, we all should know the quality sucks). You pay for what you get. -

This is not fast food, and it is not fast food priced. That said, the burgers are great, they cook them quickly, but still takes about 5 minutes. If you want a good burger, that's a good size, made fresh when you order it, this place is for you. The pizza is a good New York thin crust, and they can get you a slice almost as fast as you can order, sit, and get your drink. Another review mention Buffalo chicken pizza, and not many places in town do that anymore, so that is definitely worth a try.
I go here for lunch about once a week, and its always worth it. They also deliver to the whole of Mission Valley, up to La Mirage on the east side and the 5 on the west side. -

I come from a background of small business, so I always like to patronize small businesses and see them do well and thrive. The Works Pizza is a tiny one-off pizzeria that opened shop at Friars Mission Center last year. They claim traditional New York-style brick oven pizza, as well as designer burgers and salads. I ordered a whole "Supreme Works" pizza which carries a hefty sum of $21 plus tax. Now... I don't mind paying $21 for a 19" pizza even if it isn't covered in lobster and served on a silver tray by Papa John riding a unicycle. I do however, expect a premium product for that price. What I received was six slices of sadness. (For the math savvy it's worth noting that you can also buy the supreme or any of their specialty pizzas by the slice for $3.50 each. That means my six slice supreme pizza for $21 was not ANY cheaper than buying individual slices). So, what went wrong in the taste department? Well, quite a few things. First, good crust begets good pizza... period. The Works claims their dough is made in house everyday and hand tossed. If this is true then they must be using a recipe for paper mâché, because this crust is flat, dense, and tasteless. The next big disappointment was the sauce. This sauce screams of originating from a giant industrial tin can from the bowels of Smart and Final . It is acidic, watery, and uninspiring. The toppings on the pizza were good, although the cheese tastes like standard issue pizza chain blandness to me. If you would like to try a great New York style pizza, I can recommend either The Bronx in Hillcrest or Long Island Mike's in Kearny Mesa. If you are looking for an "artisan" style pizza, try Pizza Fusion in Hillcrest. As for The Works Pizza, I imagine most of their business will come from the many surrounding offices, which is OK for them. I would just advise those looking for a good New York pizza to not go out of there way to try this mediocre establishment.

Good for a quick slice of pizza, side, and soda when I'm on a ten minute break from class. Not the best food in the whole world but it will work in a pinch. I do wish they had more non-pork options ready to go for their pizzas. Even a margarita pizza will do.

Oh Yeah I'm a fan of The Works. It is not you typical corner pizza joint. Yes, they do have Pizza and burgers, but I'm raving about their salads. Works is a step above: The restaurant is very clean, the staff is very accommodating, and I see the owner there very often managing the staff well. The meal costs are not the cheapest, but I go there for a quality quick lunch. The salads are really pretty outstanding for a small, fast restaurant. They are made fresh when you order, and very fresh ingredients. My favorite - the Apple Granny Salad. This include a very good amount of fresh granny smith apple shredded on top, home made dressing, chicken, and candied nuts. Top it off with a fresh bread stick and you're good to go! Pizzas are tasty too, good crust~

I think this place is great. Amazing burgers at a decent price. I had the BBQ Bacon Cheddar Burger meal that came with an outstanding house salad. The burger was cooked perfectly and was large enough to fill me up. I opted to supplement the fountain drink for a Jones soda, it cost an extra buck but was well worth it. The place was clean and had some cool art on the walls and the bathroom was clean as well. They did not have a flat screen on the wall, which would have been a nice feature to encourage patrons to stay and eat. If I could get the meal with the Jones soda for under ten bucks, then I would be even more excited about this place but I am still satisfied with the price to value. It is a welcome establishment for the area.

Very over priced.
I visited this establishment twice for lunch.
First time i went, i ordered a combo slice and a soda. The total came out to almost $6. The slice was very small and it tasted ok.
Second visit I tried the Bacon Cheddar Burger and a small soda. Total came out to $8.27! That does not include fries or any sides. Adding a side costs 1.95 extra. What a rip off. On a good note, the Burger was pretty good. It was 1/3 pound of Angus beef and was a good size Burger for me. -

This place is great and a real find, I love it! I don't find it overpriced at all for fresh ingredients, homemade everyday, cooked to order. The burgers are great, the salads are scrumptious, the pizza is real NY style. Going here with the kids is easy, everyone can get something different, and I can get a great, fresh salad. The staff is friendly and accommodating.
