As a graduate student at UBC, I've made my way to this pub a few times already. It's really close to campus (W Broadway and Alma Street), and it's full of really comfy couches. The crowd is a huge mix of people, ranging from students to professors to families. They have a great selection of beers, and the prices are reasonable!
I really enjoy the nachos here, but make sure to ask for extra salsa and sour cream. Otherwise you'll run out really early. The other appetizers are great too. The service is iffy at best, but you come here for the relaxed vibe. I'm looking forward to coming here many more times in the future. -

Most of the features that made this one of the closest things to a friendly neighbour hood pub (including authentic folk music by local musicians) have been now lost. Even the regulars who could all been seen every week for years at this bar have now lost faith.
If you are a UBC student then this is a good local hangout, but for anyone else in the local and wider community, the great Celtic atmosphere and local friendliness has now evaporated. -

I really like this place! It is my friendly neighborhood bar. I love the decor, the fireplace, and the big screen TV for sporting events. The beer selection is good, the specials are great, the prices are reasonable, and the food is delicious. The staff is nice, friendly, and efficient. One of the waitresses (can't remember her name!) is fantastic. Last time I was there the service was a little off but then again I was surpised by how busy the place was for a Thursday night.
I recommend the beef and barley soup (delicious! feels like home cooking) and the chicken sandwich (spicy! with jalapenos). They make good ceasars too! -

The Wolf and Hound is an interesting pub - you can't swing a cat without hitting a UBC student.
But what I always find most amusing is that you're just as likely to see a prof here drinking, as you are one of their students. Young and old, they go here. And I was really surprised to see how many parents come with kids - it is nice to see a kid-friendly establishment (but I must admit, it's also nice when the pub is loud enough to block out the sounds of kid's cries too...call me a curmudgeon).
want bangers & mash that are close to what you get in England? try here. Want a fantastic burger and fries for less than $11? HERE! I've had both the beef and the veggie burgers and can attest that they are good value for the money. Service is ok, but not fantastic. Guess that's what happens when you fit a bunch of people together who all want drinks! -

Had another great pour of Guinness served at the right temperature. My compliments to the bartenders for doing a perfect double pour in an original Guinness pint glass with just the right head. There was great Irish music last night with Mary Brunner playing the fiddle-Fab! My Guinness was a true Workman's Friend": "A pint of plain is your only man."

This is the preferred point of group hang outs with my theatre friends as it's close to campus but also has a much chiller vibe than Mahoneys. I like the seating set up - it makes for great socialization. I haven't had their food but the drink selection isn't horrible. Even on a busy Sat. night w the Canucks game on, service was still quick.
Also, the live music is a lot of fun. I remember I just happened to be passing by with a friend of mine, heard the live music, popped on in, split a bottle of wine while lounging on the couch, and topped off the night with some dancing. Not bad at all. -

Oh the Irish. Drink, drink...and then drink some more. All while listening to fantastic tunes. The dark corners, the pillows, the music, it all makes me feel like I'm somewhere else...Ireland perhaps? And with a pint or two or three in me (or a snakebite!) how can you go wrong? I haven't eaten anything outside of a Guinness here, but the food wafts by and I can't help but wish I hadn't drank my dinner!
Spectacular vibe, great for a weeknight drink with friends --oh how I wish I still lived close to such a great, dimly lit room! -
Review from Geoff B.
Fantastic atmosphere and great brew. This is what an Irish pub should be. The decor is spot on and the selection of beer is extremely wide ranging; from local micros to Irish big names. The price isn't great, but I didn't have a single drink that I didn't approve of. The menu items were also excellent. Lots of pub food, but they also have plenty of lamb dishes rounding it out. They usually have rugby or soccer (the Raptors were on when I walked in) on the two big screen TVs, but they're easy to ignore. This is definitely a place for locals.
The service was way slow all night. I didn't care a great deal, but I did find myself wanting another drink occasionally without any waitstaff to be found. I sat at the bar while waiting for my friends to show up and got to witness the bartender work his trade. I was struck by how odd his pour technique seemed to be. More than once I saw him pour off what I considered a perfectly good head to try to get less of one. Seemed a little wasteful and unnecessary to me, but I also saw some simply awful pours (with WAY too much foam) come to the next table over, so it could have been worse. They get docked for the service and the price, but I'll certainly be back. -

I've got mixed feelings about the Wolf & Hound resulting from poor service on a most recent visit, but the staples of the place win out here.
The interior of the pub is beautiful: bright varnished wood, upholstered seats, and a spacious layout.
There are more than a dozen delightfully smooth beers on tap, including cream ales, pale ales, and stouts. The list of mix ups are enlightening: Black & Berry = Guinness and Ribenna; Black Velvet = Guiness and Champagne.
I love that they have a Maritime kitchen party weekly on Friday nights and plenty of other live music throughout the week. The Wolf & Hound does a great job of being a neighborhood pub. The menu supports this with classic pub favorites.
Most recently, the Sheppard's Pie hit a good spot on a rainy Vancouver night. But our waitress was forgetful: forgetting two parts of the order and our water. I don't understand why some people persist in trying to (or their managers persist in making them) remember the entire table's order. Write it down, improve your tips, and make the service better!
If you love to travel but lack the funds, heading to the Wolf & Hound will help you forget your troubles and give you a shot of Irish spirit(s). -

I enjoyed my experience here and the food was good.
You can tell the decorating is done by someones Irish mother, sometimes it looks odd but it ends up feeling cozy.
I haven't got drunk at the wolf and the hound but I imagine I wouldn't mind getting tanked here. -

The beer selection is pretty good. You can't go wrong with Granville Island on tap, but there's a good amount more variety if you care to look.
I had heard good things about the food but I was not very impressed. I had the Guinness Steak, which is actually something like a pot pie. It tasted, well, like a pot pie. There was no Guinness to be found. My buddy had the fish and chips and reported a tentative thumbs up.
There was a guy with a guitar doing fair renditions of Neil Young, Eric Clapton, etc. It was alright.
All in all, a good place to knock back a few beers. -

We've been to the Wolf on several occasions for dinner now and have had a good experience every time. The staff seem like they could use a little customer focus training but overall service is acceptable.
However after having brunch there this morning I had to drop my rating... Potato cakes flavored like they came from Costco as a side to a $13 meal?
Breakfast was not worth it by a long shot. Dinner or lunch are fine but this definitely is one to avoid at brunch.Comment from Jennifer G. of The Wolf & Hound 8/30/2010
BTW we do not serve Costco potato cakes. More » -

4.5 stars.
Thanks to all the previous reviews on yelp, we chose this pub to watch the game last night.
Good choice.
We got seats in the living room section in the back and settled in for the hockey game. We ordered the beer special, a jug for $12.95. Sweet.
The vegetable curry soup was very flavourful and the stuffed mushroom caps were quite lavish considering we were in a pub.
Too bad this place is quite the trek for us from downtown.. not that it will make my next visit too far from now.Listed in: Drink it up

This popular bar and restaurant is large and with lots of seating choices. By the fireplace? at the bar? or a table for scarfing down the grub. We chose table and scarf we did.
There's so many beers on tap that our server couldn't remember them all. The fries come in a small bucket and I don't think one person could finish that bucket.
C'mon, I dare ya!
There are Yam fries, (although personally I just think 8 bux is waay over the top.) and I noticed that they do NOT come in a bucket. Are Yams so special? (note to self... add to Google search list.)
The burger is delicious although it looked dwarfed by the bun. The Caesar salad was super yummy, and I must add this to my Gluten Free list with a special note that the aged Parmesan did not sound any alarms in my barren lactose enzymes dept.
Unfortunately we did not get to hear the Irish music I was expecting because of the Fundraiser event going on, they had canceled the music.
I heard a story about the owner, like she is a Jackie of all trades, sandblasting a deck, and building flower boxes in the morning and then baking an apple pie in the afternoon. Hmmm I didn't see that on the menu. -

The Hounds sure duped this Wolf!
My salad dressing: equal parts canola oil and plain white vinegar with a slight lemon spritz? (my guess at the secret recipe). That was truly the worst dressing I have ever tasted. I know wolves don't eat much greens, so I passed on the entire side and focused on the meat.
My BBQ chicken burger: Nothing amazing, but the grilled chicken was good.
The pound of wings on special for $5: Pretty sad. Loosely tossed onto an empty white plate void of any colour, not even a sprig of parsley. I understand they were the special, but all but one of the wings were little wingette pieces, only one drumette. Come on. This Wolf was hungry.
The wicked Fort Garry pints are the only thing that made me round up to three stars!
Oh well. I guess I expected a bit more from this upscale-ish pub.
Ya fooled me once Hound, I may give you another go, but I will be very wary of ambush.
Grrrrrrr (teeth snarl) -
Review from Yunn A.
I love this place for an Irish Pub. It's clean, has a good menu and drink choices that are true to it's supposed routes. Plus, it's relaxed, has live music nights, and generally the people in there are more laid back and not as likely to be douche-y and looking for a fight (unlike some of the irish pubs downtown unfortunately).
A little more out of the way, but a good place to be to sit back and enjoy a pint of Guinness. -

beautiful, cozy!
This is one of mine and my boyfriends pubs!
It feels very irish, very cool.
The food here is tasty, I ordered the pesto, pasta with chicken and it was super tasty, it comes with garlic bread, it was very delicious! very! (BUT WHEN THEY ARE VERY BUSY THEY JUST GIVE YOU NORMAL BREAD WITH ''GARLIC BUTTER'' not very good.
I highly recommend this pub, they also have live music. The guy that sings is great.
:)
ps. SERVICE IS AWFUL. RUDE STAFF :( -

Excellent vibe here. Great place for everyone to meet and hang out. Love the feel of the room, and the crowd. It feels like we're in an Irish pub. The only room for improvement would be the food. It's not the worst, but it's very uninspired, and average pub food. We generally don't eat when we hang out here. If we get hungry that's the cue to move on.
But if you're socializing and drinking, then this is a great room. -

Really good atmosphere, I'm here pretty often. Its mainly for the atmosphere, there's Mark who plays usually on Thursdays whose really good and actually really funny to listen to as John/Neal who play Saturdays who are excellent as well. Those two nights in particular are highly recommended and once in a while when there is a party for one reason or another, the atmosphere is really amazing.
I haven't eaten here in a while but the burgers / pot pies / sheppards pie are probably the best things on the menu. Its mainly just standard pub food. -

can't really rate the beer coz it's all the same, but i did try their nachos and poutine and i gotta say they were only so-so, especially when it's a bit over priced. The poutine was too simple, with gravy poured over the fries, and the cheese didn't even melt properly - straight from the fridge?!

This is truly a great pub. Great atmosphere, warm couches and a roaring fire welcomed us in from the freezing weather. My boyfriend and our buddy enjoyed the chicken wings (thai bbq), pulled pork sandwiches and poutine were awesome. Pitchers were cold and the brownie we had for dessert hit the spot. We went during the week but could see ourselves coming back on a weekend as well. Kind of out of the way since we live downtown but worth it if you're looking for a chill place to kick back and enjoy a pint. =)

Plus four stars for that great living room setup where they have a huge ass big screen television, comfy leather sofas and it's quiet enough to watch a hockey game. Plus one star for the great beer list, good food and being so close to The Cellar Club.
Minus one star for the jerk that was taking up two tables and one of the sofas when we wanted to watch the hockey game in the living room, and he keep telling us he was waiting for "friends". -
Review from Mina B.
this place is awesome!
the living room is wicked. so unique and has a great screen. food is pretty damn good for a pub. espacially the stuffed shrooms!!
prices for both, food and drinks, are reasonable.
our waitress was nice but sometimes nowhere to be found but the pub is huge and it was getting busy at the end of our night. she did a good job.
p.s. there's no hot water in the washroomListed in: best (pub) food

This is one of my favorite Irish pubs when I'm in Kits. It's a comfortable spot to catch a hockey or soccer game. There are a couple of big screen TVs, a wide selection of beer with lots of local brews, Guinness and other Irish brands. The burgers, shepherd's pie and sandwiches are good here too. The only minus is the lack of cute chicks.

Great Irish pub feel. I loved when I walked in and said, oh yeah, this feels just right for an Irish pub. Staff were friendly and our waitress was there with a warm smile. But you know what?!? I love my food. The pubs in Ireland have GREAT food (shockingly!). I am pretty sure in Dublin they don't use powdered gravy. Or that super-cheap stuff that comes in huge buckets. Well, maybe they do and it doesn't TASTE like a mixture of salt and chemicals. Jamie Oliver!!!! Can you do a show on Canadian Pubs?

Still new to Vancouver, I am on a continual search for a nice pub that has some... shall we say ambience and good energy vs. the often sterile carbon copy pubs. Having tried a number of places thus far that are quick to serve drink, but fail to recognize the broader intentions of a night out - that being a good vibe, good music and well, just a good place to sit and chat, I am happy to report back with some good news.
Finally, I think I may have found such a spot in the Wolf & Hound! Visiting it for the first time last night (friday), we were pleasantly surprised sitting on the patio and listening to the traditional irish music session taking place indoors by a wonderfully eclectic, talented and joyous bunch. I had flashbacks to the dingle peninsula I must say.
Now, additionally I must note the yam fries leave MUCH to be desired, the tv's are less than ambient additions but all in all, I would say I am a fan after visit one and shall return for a second try soon! -

So good, such a great atmosphere... but kinda pricey. 8 bucks for a beer before tip is a little much. I'd still go back though.
