aw yiss i love the wilson 96. it's charming, cozy and friendly. they do beer + shot specials on the reg. they keep a fridge stocked with delish tall boys, including my fav cider -- rekordelig.
the bartenders are great. in fact, one gave me a rolling rock pint glass because while they stock it in cans, they don't have it on tap, and don't want to bother pouring it into the correct glasses, apparently. -

Just a simple little bar that gets it right. Nice atmosphere, nice bar tenders, reasonably priced beer. And obviously the pint special is amazing.
Also, they do Sunday night Jeopardy! and it's a great event. All of yelp's nerd contingent (all of yelp?) should flock to it. Start going now, though; I hear Kent P is working on building a robot supercomputer to completely dominate the game. (Actually, the robot is just Vivek inside of a tinfoil-covered cardboard box, with little red lights and random computer parts taped on unconvincingly.) (Even so, my greatest fear is that the robot will eventually turn against it masters and seek to destroy all of humanity.)
Wilson 96 is exactly the kind of bar you want to have around the corner, a real easy hang out spot. -

Toronto politicians take heed. Sandwich boards are a serious determinant in the success of small businesses in Toronto. Just tonight a sandwich board informed me of a $5 draught special at The Wilson 96. Without that flimsy sign dressed in chalk, I might have walked on by, never scoring a ridiculously priced Guinness, or discussing the statistics-collection methods of OK Cupid with the cute tender of bar (I think her name was Jenny), or scoring yet another ridiculously priced Guinness. Think about THAT City Hall! (No, but seriously, do.)
Spring has (kind of) sprung and the front doors of the Wilson are open wide and fresh air and natural light are pouring in. I don't like using the word "charming" so let me just say that the interior of this place is witching, sorcerous and supernatural. (Bah! Forget you, http://thesaurus.com.)
The walls are adorned with ink reproductions of celeb mug shots and the counter is reclaimed wood from a bowling lane. Cool. Named for the owners' favourite TTC bus route (I'm more of a 224 Victoria Park North man myself) the Wilson's $5 draught special is truly intriguing. In addition to Guinness they offer Mill Street (organic and vanilla porter), Warsteiner, and Sir Perry's Pear Cider. I saw a cocktail menu out of the corner of my eye, but everything started at about $8. Not expensive but more than a fiver, right?
Bottles also. Seems like a local hangout more than a place you'd take your brother's ex-wife. Because dude, that would be WEIRD.
I'll come back.
Obligatory Title Pun: You'll row wood at this WILSON. (WTF?)
Menu Readability: Chalk board. Tap handles. Jenny. (Maybe.)
Need to mention: This conversation took place:
Vivek: Can I start a tab?
Jenny(?): Sure.
VIVEK slaps a credit card on the counter.
Jenny: Oh, you don't want to do that. I'll lose that thing, or I'll forget to give it back to you, or you'll forget to take it.
Vivek: Right.
VIVEK puts card back into wallet.
Jenny: Besides, we only take cash.
Vivek: Right.
What this place teaches me about myself: Don't write reviews after $5 pints. -

Review from Nicole P.
In an area full of bars and such that do not interest me in the slightest, there is a little bar called the Wilson 96. It is basic. It is laid-back. It is not that expensive. The atmosphere made me feel like I was in an unknown bar in San Diego, minus the perfectly groomed tans and outrageously tall blondes.
The bartender is friendly and apparently there is a lot of live music that I had just happened to have missed. It's not a very large place, so if you are coming with a lot of people I'd say go earlier, otherwise, I think it just adds to the charm. -

Great joint in a part of town that desperately needs one. Some of the best live music in the city. Overall prices are not as cheap as I would like but they always have at least one great drink special each night. Amazing live Jeopardy is a huge attraction!

I thought this was a very cool spot in Little Italy for a few beers. There are lots of wild, colourful artwork on the walls, a jukebox, and tall white Roman Catholic candles all over the tables. Pints are $5 before 8 p.m. and $6 after 8 p.m. The bar is quite small with just a few tables, so arrive early. They don't serve food, but are happy to let you bring outside food in. Service was very friendly and fast.

Great pub that shouldn't be missed. Be sure to check out the cool bar made of reclaimed wood from an actual bowling alley.
Good spot for date drinks or just chilling with friends. Relaxed atmosphere, good tunes (but not so loud you can't talk), wide selection of beer at great prices. Hosts some nights for tv shows, bands and to profile film.
Such a great addition to the neighbourhood.
