Review from David W.
In a SPG promotion, I "earned" two nights at any SPG resort that needed to be used by December 21st. By the time I realized it, my first resort 5 choices were sold out.... Serves me right for waiting until last minute.
The Westin Bear Mountain was available.... Short of walking around downtown Victoria one afternoon on a cruise, I had never been to Vancouver Island.... So I booked it.
I know this is a golf resort, but going in mid December it felt like this was a ski resort... They did a great job of decorating for the holidays.
I checked in and the front lobby staff was very friendly. They took the time to tell me all about the resort, provided me with maps and suggestions of things to do and places to eat while I was visiting.
They also offered me 500 SPG points in exchange for forgoing housekeeping services. I haven't had that offered before but did think it was a good idea.
As an SPG Plat, I was upgraded to a very nice suite. It was essentially a one bedroom condo.... (See Photos)
The kitchen area was nice, but for some reason they cut costs here... standard to low end appliances and fake granite counter tops..... It was fine.. but felt out of place because everything else in the hotel was so nice.
The living room was great... Fake fireplace was nice and a 50 inch flat screen was nice...I'm not electronics expert, but half the channels were not only non HD, they were fuzzy...
On the first night we noticed that there was no wifi at all.... Then, the second morning I saw an employee who was pushing a desktop computer on a cart and asked him why they didn't put in Wifi... he said there was wifi and would look into it..... and sure enough.. when we returned, there was wifi in the building.
The property has alot going for it. It appears it is part of a larger "planned community" that is still a work in progress.
I would go back in the future and really enjoyed my weekend getaway! -

Stayed here in Aug 2008, just discovered I can review hotels. We were upgraded to a suite. It was fantastic, we had practically a full kitchen and a balcony view of the golf course. We ate in the Copper Rock Grill where I had the most delicious smoked salmon pasta. It's a great getaway type of place, but we were tourists, so we really wanted to be closer to downtown.
Downside, it is nestled in a created community, far from any civilization outside of the planned community. I also don't play golf, and it rained the entire stay so I'm not sure anyone played golf. -

Jack & I stayed here in June 2008. It was raining. The property is very nice but far out from dowtown Victoria. There is still a lot of contruction in the area. Rooms are very nice and spacious. If the weather had been nice or we were golfers, it would have been great. But all in all I would stay at the Empress next time.

I stayed here for new Years eve with my gf and 3 other couples. We had took part in a special dinner which was an amazing 5 courses of different items that no one had any complaints of and was set up in a nice area. The room itself was great, big and spacious a full kitchen, two bathrooms a living room area and a great king bed with a nice modern look and a fire place (strictly for aesthetics). The room was a great rate i've stayed at far worse for much more. I'm a golf fan and this place does have a great course I was sad i didn't have time to partake. I'd recommend this place to all, its down only downfall is the distance to downtown victoria, but if that is not an issue i believe this would be one of the best places to stay in the city

Quite beautiful and scenic. The rooms are huge and on the hole, really nicely done up. Fridges, microwaves, huge bathroom, balconies overlooking the mountains. It's really spectacular and relaxing. Food is really good throughout the four restaurants as well. A bit out of the way with the windy road to get up the hill, but it is such a welcome respite a few minutes from downtown Victoria.

Great place. We're booking an extra day just to stay longer. We arrived and the guy at the front desk upgraded our room to one with a huge balcony and a view of the Valley. INSANE. We have a kitchenette in our room and despite that still ordered room service because it wasn't ridiculously expensive. The gym is great and included as well as the tennis courts and racquets. Yoga and other fitness classes are $5/each, which is reasonable and the pool is a great outdoor salt walter oasis--however the music outside is a bit loud and that's saying a lot coming from me. Gorgeous, clean resort.
