Kaylie Says:
Make sure you ask for the exclusively vegan menu when you go in, but make sure to only go in for lunch or dinner. Their vegan options for breakfast are far from extensive, they only have one, and even it is not very good. We went in for breakfast and ordered the Vegan Hash and Lightning fries. Who eats fries for breakfast? We do! Especially when all there is for breakfast is hash. Bland hash. Throwing red peppers, onions and zucchini in a pan with tofu and oil is a far cry from a hash and a far cry from flavourful and good. Expect to pay $10 for something you could make better at home by just adding some Braggs.
Other than the mis-hap with the hash, the service is very knowledgeable, friendly and very cute. The decor is creative and comfortable, but it isn't the only reason I frequent this establishment. Their sandwiches, the hummus melt especially, is to die for! It's mouth-watering, smothered with daiya, hummus, onions, atop fluffy focaccia.
Also, did I forget to mention the have cheap drinks and a vegan, gluten-free pizza night on Tuesdays?
Malloreigh Says:
Kaylie's a bit harsh but she's right - I found their tofu hash to be really bland. The tofu wasn't marinated in anything, and overall it didn't have much flavour. However, everything else we've tried at The Wallflower is totally amazing, and there's plenty of other places to get vegan breakfast in Vancouver.
We're addicted to the Thunder/Lightning Fries - two different sizes but the same crispy, beautiful french fries smothered in peppers, chili, and Daiya vegan "cheese". I tried the Portabello burger recently and, even though it only came with tomato, greens, Daiya, and an optional pickle, it was bloody delicious - tasted like it was marinated lightly in balsamic, and had a beautiful texture.
Tuesday pizza night is fantastic. You choose 3 toppings, have the option of a gluten-free crust (or is it all gluten-free?) and either cow or vegan cheese, and out comes a custom $12 pizza. It's not huge and is definitely meant for individual consumption, but we found it absolutely delicious. It's nice to have gooey, cheesy pizza that's vegan. The crust is thin but has a great texture and flavour. We'll certainly be making a weekly tradition of it (if I can convince Kaylie we can afford that).
The Wallflower also has the only vegan macaroni and cheese in Vancouver, as far as I know. It's not as good as mine, but it's vegan and it's smothered in Daiya and individually baked. It's nice to have for when you crave that neon-orange shit-in-a-box.
The Wallflower is definitely one of our regular haunts. (Stalkers are welcome to be regular patrons too.) We love this place and our lovely server Camille, who reminds Kaylie of Sookie Stackhouse. We totally appreciate that The Wallflower has a vegan menu - it reminds us of Portland (specifically Hungry Tiger Too, though The Wallflower smells way better).
I will start by echoing comments in other reviews that I do really appreciate a varied gluten free and vegan menu that eliminates the need to ask a million questions about which ingredients the chef uses. Tuesday nights (gluten-free pizza night) the place is packed with non-gluten eaters like myself and has a great vibe. The service was a bit slow for that reason (we had to wait a while for a drinks menu and then drinks), but the servers were very friendly and knowledgeable.
That said, the gluten-free pizza crust was slightly underwhelming. It was too crunchy at the edge, where the toppings do not cover. The toppings were good (you could choose three for a very reasonable $12) and they gave you a generous amount without being overwhelming. Overall I would return to the Wallflower and try one of the other gluten free options on their menu and try other places that offer gluten free pizza before ordering the Wallflower's pizza again. Although, again, it was great to enjoy pizza for once!
I'm loathe to say this, as the owner is a doll, but my pals and I have a saying "The Wallflower would be better if it was..... better."
Here's what I mean: for a diner specializing in "modern comfort food" I don't really find anything modern or updated about the menu (other that the gluten free and veggie options.) Everything I have ever tried is ..... plain.
And I know some people like plain! So that must be the draw of the restaurant, but for me it's always a bit of a disappointment. I want something a bit extra, a cheesy melty gooey bubbling crust on the mac and cheese (nope) some interesting toppings on my salmon burger (lettuce, onion and tomato, pals) some joie de vivre in the bennie choices (the most interesting is crab cake, and that cake left me feeling crabby.) Also, they have a non-stop overcooking eggs problem - no matter how many times I specify "runny eggs" I gets the yolks chalky and hard. This makes poor Jessica cry her unhappy egg tears.
All that said - it is an affordable place to grab drinks and snacks. I love the space, the staff are awesome (they rescued this review from a 2 star by being some of the friendliest on Main St) and the drinks are cheap. I feel like they just need to review the menu, self edit the strange mish mash of offerings and up the ante with the details! If this happens I would be in love. In lurve, even..
Great breakfast joint.
The food was delicious and the service was friendly. It was pretty busy when we went and because of that there was some miscommunication with the staff. The waffles were drowning in syrup, but is that really something to complain about? They also had a sweet groupon deal which I wish I got more of.
I came here for a late breakfast, since they serve brunch until 4pm, but after looking over the menu I decided on the tofu wrap with peanut sauce. I had the choice of a side of fries or salad, and I chose the cesar salad, which combined with the wrap was almost too much salad. By the time I finished the wrap though, I didn't really have room for the side salad anyways, so I can't imagine I would have had room for fries either.
It was a full house at the Wallflower, and I couldn't stop staring at the guy who had the hairiest arms I had ever seen in my life sitting across the room, while trying to maintain my appetite. The walls were decorated with beautiful photos of Vancouver buildings, they looked like they had been taken in HDR and then photoshopped and framed, and reasonably priced too, but out of my hobo-budget.
Our service was slow and the servers seemed a little spacey and distracted. The BF ordered the veggie hash, which looked super yummy, and he cleaned his plate before I could even get a taste test. He also had a coffee served in a Denny's mug?? Strange, but funny. I think I have converted him into a Wallflower-fan, so now I have another brunch place I can drag him to on weekends, since most of our usual haunts seem to have 30 minute waits to get in now. The last thing a hangover needs to fuel its destruction is a waitlist. Don't fear the creeper!

Did somebody say free pizza? Dairy free and gluten free that is! I walked on over to the Wallflower… Read more »
What can I say but thank you again Wallflower.
I feel like I had a dream that I ate a delicious hamburger (on a non gluten bun with Daiya vegan cheese) -and my dream came true!
Lisa, (the owner) is a real pioneer in my books, because she offers an all gluten free menu. Our own menu! (-aren't we 'special') 8-} but she also points out that most things on the regular menu fall into the category as well.
Tuesday nights gluten free pizza is available and vegan is an option as well. They even have a gf beer on the menu. The place was packed and the vibe was festive.
The wallflower isn't just known for being GF friendly, it's also popular because the all the food is just so yummy and wholesome. Brunch is also served until 4pm.
I know I'll be back for that burger 'cause I'm craving it already!

Full house on a Tuesday night? You betcha! Tonight was a test run on Vegan and gluten free pizzas… Read more »
I came here with a friend the other day because I heard that they have one of the best breakfasts around Mt. Pleasant. I was not disappointed! I ordered the special bacon and cheddar benny and it was great. The Hollandaise had real flavour to it and all of the ingredients used were all of good quality. The hash browns were just awesome and a good reason to come back on their own (I can't stand the factory made potatoes). A nice touch were the greens that accompanied the meal. They were well dressed and it's nice to have something that isn't so heavy on a breakfast plate.
The service was friendly and very speedy. I never once had to ask for the coffee to be refilled and you could tell that our server was attentive to, not only our table, but all of the other tables in her section.
If you needed another reason to go, it would be the prices. This place is very decently priced for what you get. Most meals are well sized and cost between $7-$12.
Can't wait to go there again and try something else.
I love Groupons. And I love The Wallflower for using Groupons!
Had dinner here the other night and would def come back, even without a Groupon. The drinks are sooooo cheap! Double hi-balls for $5.50? Hell ya! The martinis were pricy at $9 and not as strong so I'd stick to the well liquors.
Service was awesome. Everyone was so nice. All the servers were available to take your order, instead of just one specific to your section. And everything came so fast! The crowd was chill, everyone from the artsy to the not, like me.
I tried the crab cakes and stuffed yorkie- both were really good. Who would've thought of stuffing roast beef into a yorksire pudding? Awesome. Perfectly seasoned and cooked. The chicken pot pie was not so good- waaaay too creamy for my taste, with only small pieces of chicken. It had a puff pastry "lid" instead of a full on pie crust. Unfortunately, the lid would sink down and get drenched in the cream sauce when you tried to cut into it. I had to scoop it out and eat it on its own.
Thank you Groupons for showing me a sweet spot.
I really appreciate the effort, Wallflower. The fact that you have a separate gluten-free and vegan menu wins you so many points. Your staff are wonderfully knowledgeable and accommodating about dietary restrictions. But you lose a star for your gluten-free pizza crust. Too crunchy.
The pizza itself was delicious -- three toppings for $12, I chose bacon, mushrooms and spinach. But the gluten-free buckwheat crust? Eh. It was fine when it was under the toppings, but the very edges of the crust were pretty hard. I wanted to love it, but I couldn't.
That being said, I think it's amazing that there is a place where I can get gluten-free pizza on a regular basis. And my gluten-eating boyfriend greatly enjoyed his pierogies. I'll just have to come back and try their other gluten-free options. Thankfully, there are enough of them!
[Sigh of relief] I finally(!) made it to the Wallflower. With it being all the hotness on Yelp and being jealous of reviewers who have gone the Wallflower made it's climb up my list. You know the type of list - "No matter how inconvenient [I live in the burbs], how little time, or who I am with - I am going here next" list.
Luckly, I had a friend who once I filled her in on the place and showed her the menu online agreed we needed to go there. The gluten free hamburger buns were calling my name!
The Wallflower will immediately score points for accomodating the "hard to feed." I'm talk to you vegans / vegetarians / gluten bigots / celiacs. But what makes this a full on heart, is if you're with the "normals" they are going to find great food too! Isn't the power of choice amazing?
Anyways, I digress. My friend and I grabbed a table and our server quickly brought us menus. And didn't scoff over our water order. And then the problem - the delicious looking food. I had already determined it would be a burger for me. I never get to order hamburgers normally. I always have to get them without the bun and be looked at strangely by servers. Haha! Not this time!
Now, the burger choice was incredible difficult, because the Wallflower, the Canuck, and the Hot Head all had great appeal. I settled on the Wallflower with a GF bun, my friend had the Canuck. And we had some wine, whichly quite nicely of them, was not totally overpriced.
I am happy to report the Wallflower was delicious. And the GF bun, best GF bun I've eatten. If you are gluten free you know, most of the buns you can buy will just utterly betray you and crumble as you try to eat your hamburger until you eventually just give up and eat the patty alone (cost vs. benefit analysis results). This bun didn't betray me. It didn't fail. It held up the whole time! And it was good, not just GF good, real good. I devoured the whole thing even though it was massive and I was utterly stuffed after half the burger. I mean, no burger lovin gluten bigot in her right mind would walk away from one that good.
GF rant aside, I will summarize the rest:
- After done eatting copious amounts of goodness, the server promptly took our plates. None of the looking around, get this away from me. Just shortly after being done and sitting back in the glow of GF happiness it was sorted.
- Check hit the table the same time my wine glass got emptied. But with no pressure to get out "You want another drink and I will make this disappear" she said. Awesome.
- For two burgers and two glasses of wine = 40 after tax and before tip.
All I can say is the Wallflower is worthy of a solid fist pump WITH fireworks. And I will be back for burgers, and to test drive gluten free pizza night!
So, this Groupon thing has been good for me. I'm getting to try out new places and feel like I'm getting a deal. This was great getting $18 for paying $8! I have never heard of this place even though I work in the area...
I called my son and he met me for lunch. Our waitress, (sweet as can be...seriously, she was!) recommended the omelette to us. I ended up taking her up on it. For $7 I got a shrimp, avocado & Harvati cheese omlette with marble rye toast, hash browns and perfectly seasoned salad! I ordered some hollandaise too for an extra buck! I could not quite finish though I gave it a valiant effort.
My son had a spicy chicken wrap & caesar salad for $10. He enjoyed it too. We both had coffee. I enjoyed the atmosphere and would certainly come again for lunch. Bar was full with people watching soccer & using WiFi. With the $18 coupon, my portion ended up being $5.25. I left $10 and was happy paying $18 for lunch, all-in, for two!
The breakfasts are delicious. they'll do an egg white poached egg for your benny if you have cholesterol issues (just ignore the butter in the sauce :P), switch out toast for glutenfree bread from kinnickinick, happily give you a pot of soymilk for your coffee, and not give you flack for asking about substitutions.
I can honestly say that this is the first place this allergy-prone person can head to and eat without feeling like a restaurant pariah. There were SO. MANY. CHOICES Haven't felt welcomed like this in a very long while.
There's a vegan and gluten free menu if you're so inclined. Just ask when you sit down. They've switched up their entire kitchen so that flour products don't contaminate gluten-free areas. WOOO!
I tried their omelette. For $7 you get 3 fillings (not countingcheddar, which is included), salad, toast (a tasty baby mesclun salad - not bitter and with a light and delicious dressing), and baked hashbrowns. I had shrimp, feta, and spinach in my omelette. NOM.
There's also fillings like cheese, olives, tomatoes, bacon, and numerous others.
My mum tried the crab benny. We were both surprised by the curryish cumin-ness, but it was delicious. Also came with salad and potatoes.
I highly recommend this place for breakfast in general, the quality of the ingredients, the service, and the attention to substitution requirements can't be beat. If you or your loved ones have allergy issues, it's even better.
(and the rotating art exhibitions on the wall are also quite wonderful)
I came for the gluten free / dairy free pizza, but the canuck burger with fries won me over.
What can I say, they have a special menu for gluten free and vegan people and an allergy guide for all their foods. The burger buns here are the best gluten free ones I've had since I found out about my allergies a few years ago. The vegan cheese (Daiya) they use is also the best tasting vegan cheese I ever tried. The burger comes with bacon!!! The fries are also really good too, smiles ...
It would be nice if they carried a better selection of non-alcoholic gluten free beverages like Reed's ginger beer or Virgil's root beer, but other than that it doesn't get any better than this.
One of the things I missed the most since going GFCF was a burger and fries, but I can enjoy them again. Thank You!
While I appreciate the fact that the Wallflower caters to clients with food allergies, the dishes here are really nothing special. In fact, they're on the bland side. I had the salmon burger on one occasion. It was really, really dry. And today I tried the daily pot pie, which was nothing more than a bowl of potatoes in tasteless yellow curry sauce topped with puff pastry. Super boring. 3 stars instead of 2 cause my friend really enjoyed his blackened halibut, and nothing bad to say about service/decor. Maybe brunch is better?
Most of the vegans I know in Vancouver, myself included, have recently developed a big ol' crush on The Wallflower. Why? Because they recently revamped the menu to show vegans some love with vegan options for pizza, mac & cheese, thunder fries (ridiculous), and more. They've even offered us, along with the similarly much-forgotten Celiacs a vegan and gluten-free pizza night, on Tuesdays. With the comfy atmosphere, friendly service, and delicious comfort food, The Wallflower is my go-to place for food and drinks with all my friends; dietary preferences considered!
The only thing missing is a patio!!!
For those who are tired of waiting at brunch places like Cafe Barney's, walk down the street on Main north and you will find this exceptional place that reminds you a bit of NY diner.
Food, typical and has more options than Cafe Barney's, and of course, service was exceptional! It was easy to get waitresses attention and place was quiet, not the usually loud-to-be-cool type. It's relaxing and cool.
I ordered bennies, not better or worse than other place, it's just the service is much better than most places on Main st. I would probably come here instead of Barney's.
Oh, did I mention, it's a cheaper too??
Downside is, it's good for winter and fall, as in the summer, most people want to see the sky and feel the summer breeze, so I can see it not being as popular as it's competitor down the street because of having no patio.
Never a disappointment at the Wallflower, that's for sure.
Ambiance is always very friendly, food is always tasty and i've been there for breakfast, lunch and dinner and enjoyed every meal!
My favorites are their daily pot pies (steak + mushroom, hello!!) and their peach waffles.
Tasty food at inexpensive prices. Enough said.
Came here on a dreary Friday night. Cool wall of black and white flowers adorn the side of the restaurant. Artwork hangs on the wall. Small place, seats around 40 people. We were seated promptly.
Menu consists of many vegetarian options, and burgers and sandwiches, as well as old fashioned 'diner' classics with a twist, such as the japlepeno mac n cheese.
We settle on some yummy sounding food to share:
Mushroom Bruschetta: with portobello, sauteed button mushrooms, fig goat cheese, and crostinis. Verdict: This was a much larger portion than we had expected! Eight slices of perfectly toasted crostinis, surrounding a generous heaping amount of mushrooms, with fig goat cheese-the most perfect combination!! A little hint of sweetness from the fig, mingled with the flavour of the mushroom!!
Crab and Apple Cakes: Crab, curry, onion, apple, peach! Sounds too fruity? But it really was another excellent combination!! Three cakes-crab meat, with bits of fruits with a delicious dipping sauce! Another good choice.
Also had a Hummus Melt: baked foccacia, hummus, spinach, onion, mushroom, havarti. This also comes with a side of greens, but we decided to splurge and subbed it for a poutine instead. This was very good also. Foccacia and perfectly toasted, and the blend of spinach, onion, and mushroom, just worked well together. Poutine was also good-came in a large bowl....with yummy cheese curds and the gravy was delicious!!
We were soo stuffed but could not give up on dessert. Chocolate browinie (that day, it was a cake instead), with a Baileys chocolate sauce??! We were sold on the Baileys! Given that there was only one left, we just HAD to order this. This came in a large slice, with some chocolate sauce on top. We asked for more sauce since it was just that good. The waitress was nice enough to selvage some for us. We ended up dipping bites of the cake into the chocolate sauce, oh, we were in heaven!!
The Wallflower supports local artists by displaying one's work for a month, and the first Friday and Saturday of each month, there's a opening party. Cool.
It was a busy night, but we still got excellent service. Our glasses were always filled, and the waitress always checked up on us. I will be back for more chocolate cake!
Nice neighbourhood place with good daily specials. Great place for "diner" food. Very friendly staff.
Only lost a star because they don't take debit , only cash and credit cards (or using an inhouse ATM with fees)
I had a really tasty brunch here on the weekend. Crabcake eggs bennie?! Who knew you could do that! Wallflower that's who! The owner Lisa even told me they have a meatloaf bennie. Ok, let's not get carried away here.
The Wallflower was packed but the 3 serves (2 of which were the adorable husband/wife owners) made sure everyone had their coffee cups full and warm plates of brunch. Cold eggs are gross and usually the result of very busy breakfast joints. Not here! I really appreciate that you get hashbrowns AND salad because the good cancels out the bad, right!? (By bad I mean deep fried and not bad tasting...just in case there was some confusion)
This place is very sweet and perfect for brunch. It has a casual and unpretentious vibe so you could wear your work out gear and not feel like a ragga muffin.
Ok so I just re-visited The Wallflower for brunch and I have to say I'm still impressed.
We entered the cafe around half one in the early after and were waiting behind another couple who had just entered mere moments behind us. The service to seat was pretty quick and they were on us like Oprah on a baked ham for the drink and food orders.
Anyways, I don't know what kind of psychic wait staff they have there but they knew coffee, grapefruit juice and waters (waters!) before we could speak (coffee I can see, but grapefruit juice???), which kinda freaked me out so I immediately stopped picturing the wait staff dressed as Furries in case they were telepathic too...
Anyhoo on to the food. Food good. Fire bad. RRAAAAAAAGGGGHHHH!!!
But I digress...
We split the sliders (needs bacon), an interesting take on the breakfast sandwich. Remember Harold and Kumar go to White Castle? Like that but more breakfasty (i.e eggs, cheese, lettuce and tomato on a mini burger bun, hence the "needs bacon" or maybe even mini Jimmy Dean-style sausage patties).
Our second split was the crab cake benny, which was a bit of a let down. I did enjoy the hollandaise (good, creamy and thick; like I like my women...) and the crab cake was tasty but here's my take on it:
1) If you do a potato based crab cake then do not put it on an English muffin. Too much starch. The benny on the potato based crab cake would do well just with the egg and holly. Plain and simple with more salad and minus the tasty homestyles (or option between the two).
or
2) Jack the price up 2 or 3 bucks and put it on a 100% crab meat cake (nothing too large but just enough to sink your teeth into). I'd gladly pay $13 - $15 for such decadence on a Sunday...
All in all the Wallflower was better service (they actually said goodbye and cried when I left! Ok well they did at least say goodbye...) and on par food with other restaurants in the area. The coffee was deep and delicious and the Teletoon on the flat screens was a nice homey touch.
I still love you The Wallflower and will be back another day to sample the Meatloaf Benny (I sh** thee not! It was on the specials board!)...
Tucked away on Main street, just a block north of Broadway, it's definitely worth checking out. Very retro decor and laid back service, I visited this place last weekend for brunch and really couldn't complain! My girlfriends had the veggie hash and turkey benny, and I had the crab cake benny.
I'm usually a huge fan of anything seafood, but the crab cake was a bit dry. That's just me being SUPER picky, but I'm sure the other stuff would've been great. They had a bunch of wraps on the menu too? I'm a big wrap girl. My girls loved their food and the coffee was great. Would return again!
This is my first time back since the elite event... this was the place that got picked for this weekend's GTG with my girlfriends.
We got in just before it became packed - it seems to get really busy after 11am here. Service is okay so you need to remind the staff to refill your coffee/water. Brunch fare is pretty standard with eggs and bennies, although there are a few unique twists. One of the egg dishes that was ordered (the sliders) came in mini burger buns and my benny was unique... my first time with a crab cake one!
Brunch overall is OK. I found it a bit weird to have greens (a mini salad) with my benny rather than fresh fruit. Prices are similar to other places in town ($9-11 for most brunch dishes and $2.50 for coffee).
This new restaurant replaces the Aurora Bistro.
It's a new inexpensive place to eat on the main and broadway strip. It offers both a breakfast menu (until 4pm) and a dinner menu.
I wasn't there for my usual breakfast fair but don't you worry, that will come around soon enough. This time around I had gone for their dinner selection.
They offer a wide variety of food. Mostly stuff I would say, you could find at a 'modern' diner. Among the things you will be able to choose for your tastebuds: turkey dinner, meatloaf, perogies, burgers, chili, pot pie and of course, fish and chips.
I was torn between Grandma's Fried Chicken and the Meatloaf. I finally chose the chicken. How could you not want some of granny's home cookin?
It was tasty! Accompanied by some mash potatoes, fresh vegetables and some good old gravy!
WE started with an order of yam fries. Pretty much your standard yam fries. Can't go wrong.
What makes this place wonderful is the price of the food and the cocktails. I went with the recommendation of the server, the Snapdragon. The sweetest cocktail of the menu at $5 a glass. I was so happy with it. I could have had more if I didn't work tomorrow.
Very friendly service, with a pretty smile, and the brunch was just as good. The place was full for a weekend mid day dining. Well priced and good portions.... My first time here and will be coming in for dinner..
Alright, so I heard many friends sing high praises about this place and that may have caused me to go in with way too elevated expectations. It may also have been an off day, I don't know. But I was pretty unimpressed. I had a craving for diner-style food tonight and, as a result of the aforementioned songs of praise, Wallflower popped into my head, right away. It was very empty when we walked in, which didn't worry me because it was relatively early in the evening. The downside, however, was that you could see how dirty the place was. There were scraps of food under several of the tables, which didn't even even look like they were from that day, and several fruit flies buzzing around. But ... the table tops were clean and I'm not normally very particular about these things, so I figured: who cares, if the food is good. Next thing I noticed were the prices. This place was especially recommended for being an affordable Main Street eatery, and while it is by no means expensive, I don't find an average 12-13 dollars for a plate of diner-style food particularly cheap. You can get a very decent burger and fries for that price anywhere in Vancouver still, certainly on Main. But again, since it's not in any way excessively overpriced, I figured: who cares, if the food is good. Next thing was the service. Now, our waiter was nice and generally came across as attentive. I don't know if he actually had a genuine hearing problem, but it was a tad annoying that he had to ask three times what my wife's drink order was and, when we ordered the bill at the end, brought her another beer instead. Also, on a very minor note, I do find it odd for twenty-something male waiters to keep touching female guests during the ordering process. Again, though, he was very friendly and seemed to mean well, so I figured: who cares, if the food is good ...
... and then we got our food. I ordered the Blue Plate special, which was listed as a grilled Halibut burger with fries. The "grilled Halibut" was in fact battered and deep-fried and had obviously never seen a grill in its lifetime, which - I would bet - included some time in a freezer. Not enough that it was completely falsely advertised, it wasn't even well prepared, the way it was. The batter was way to thick and considerably overcooked and/or the oil they used simply wasn't hot enough. On top of everything, it came on a whole wheat bun. And, I'm sorry, I generally think that whole wheat in combination with any burger is something you should offer as an option, if at all. But especially if you're serving fish on it and most definitely after you've almost fried every last bit of original flavour out of that fish, a whole wheat bun literally just kills the last bit of taste that's left between its halves (which, except for the fish, consisted of a pretty bland tartar sauce and a distinctly wilted piece of lettuce). The fries were okay, but by no means special. I had originally planned on dessert, but was so unimpressed at the point of finishing dinner that I opted out. All in all, a very disappointing experience.
I will certainly allow for the possibility that it was, in fact, an off day and will go back to try some of the more home-style fare from the menu proper. And I'm more than willing to revise my verdict, if that proves to be everything people have cracked it up to be. But, so far, I find the Wallflower just incredibly overrated. Not at all a "modern diner", but - apart from the decor - rather akin to something you might find at a rest stop on the Trans Canada.
I like this place a lot. Never went to the Aurora Bistro - but I've been here a few times. Really homey feeling right down to the home-cooked style food that they have. I've ate their sliders and Thunder Fries with a friend I met there for drinks - and then had poutine another day. All three of these were quite good! Bar staff are super friendly - and they have Old Milwaukee on special usually. Being someone that enjoys cheap beer, (PBR being my fav.) this is a bonus. As an additional piece of goodness - they carry Guinness and Strongbow - my two favorites, hands down!
