During a business trip to Winnipeg (I know, what the hell is in Winnipeg...), I had the pleasure of having lunch at The Underground Cafe.

The cafe is literally underground (at basement level), so you still have the small windows spilling in some natural lighting. The vibe is extremely chill and the food is extremely awesome.

I had the sunshine burger, I think it was called, and still to this day I can't find anything in L.A. even close to the level of the mouth orgasm I experienced after taking my first bite of that juicy, grainy, nutty, dilly, mmmffuggin amazingly sunshiny burger... I was supposed to be focusing on work talk, but it just wasn't happening.

The term "burger" shouldn't even be used in the presence of this thing. It should be named after a god. Sunshinus Meltinyomouthimus or something... but anyway, it was a good chunk (at least quarter lb) of patty with this amazing dill sauce on a perfectly sized bagel. You can't go wrong.

    Oh. It's vegetarian...durr.

The Sun burger is GREAT, but they also have amazing soups on daily. I recommend getting a bowl with the BCLT sandwich. YUM!

While the cafe is a little on the dark side, being that it is literally underground, i still enjoy the vibe of this restaurant. The only thing that would make it better would be longer hours and a smile from the servers (not exactly the friendliest of staff...).

The names speaks for itself, it truly is "underground" as it's located in the basement level of the 70 Arthur building (immediately on your left as you walk in). It's a rather dark interior with graffiti art all around with an open kitchen towards the back.

There are a number of breakfast specials on daily while the rest of the regular menu serves up various meat and vegetarian, and vegan dishes. Lots of sandwiches, ww pita pizzas, salads, soups and specialty coffees. I like that you can get half size orders for almost every dish. A meal here can range from $4-$12.

Their house specialty has to be their most talked about dish, the "Fabulous Sun-Burger" ($5.75). Everyone loves it and for good reason. The sun burger is a veggie burger but not vegan as it contains dairy products. It's a hearty baked patty filled with toasted sesame and sunflower seeds, veg protein, mozzarella & cheddar, rice, eggs and spices. The patty isn't overly seasoned so you need the lime-dill sauce and accompanying veg toppings to complement the veggie burger. The only thing I am not a fan of is the toasted bagel used as the burger bun - but that's a personal bias. The bagel really tips you over the edge as the patty is very filling on its own. I'm by no means a low-carb gal but I ate the burger like it was an open faced sandwich (eliminating half of the bagel) and I was very full.

Their Caesar salad is similar to other places, except it probably has one of the most garlicky dressings I've ever tasted! It's a good thing if you don't have to work closely with anyone after lunch here!

I tried the half egg salad sandwich ($3) and it was excellent! I should've ordered the full sandwich because I was craving for some more after I finished the half! The marble rye was super fluffy and soft and the egg salad had the perfect balance of eggs, sweet red peppers, green onions, mayo and spices!

    Open only M-F from 8 am - 4 pm.

Amazing veggie burger.  Served on a bagel no less!  All they need is honey dill and poutine.

Will be going back there again.

Pricey, but more worth it than other options nearby.

Was in the area and ran into a friend we talked and decided to go here.  She had a BLT, and I had the sun burger with a side salad, we both enjoyed our meal.  With this being my third visit with different people, I can say that the food deserves the 4 star rating, the service can be a little off, but I will make it back the next time the opportunity presents itself.
