Review from Joss G.
Great place for a proper yet laid-back dining experience! The name may be misleading and the location somewhat hidden on what seems like a back-alley street, but "the TroUgh DINING CO." offers an upscale-feel dining experience in such a quaint town as Canmore and which, to my experience, can hold up its own amongst some of the "fancier" restaurants in Las Vegas, where I currently reside.
The place itself looks like a converted house, with a small but adequate dining space; outdoor patio seating (complete with heat lamps) and indoor bar area also available. The kitchen seemed small and homey, but fits well with the place. RESERVATION RECOMMENDED.
Ambience & Decor- Rustic, imaginative, and earthy. I love their use of wooden wine crate planks, that were lined along the ceiling with the winery logos showing.
Service- Extremely friendly, and more formal than not. I believe that each employee who came to our table greeted us in some way and/or asked us at some point during our dinner how our food was. I was very impressed by that alone, and then a little more after seeing one of the employees serve a bottle of red wine to a couple at the table next us in such a formal way using an aerator and a decanter.
Food- Exceptional, with a modern and well-thoughtout menu of appetizers ("laurel"s) and main dishes ("hardy"s), and a few surprizes in between, including a mini course of amuse bouche, plus an unexpected palate cleanser...talk about fancy, eh?
Recommendations, if available at the time you go:
*Appetizers- ASIAN PEAR SALAD and DUCK CONFIT.
*Main Dishes- LAMB SHANK and BABY BACK RIBS.
*Our soup for that day was a CREAM OF CAULIFLOWER w/ TRUFFLE OIL, which was also very good.
Price- Is what to be expected from this type of dining environment, service, and quality of food being presented.
Within our party of four adults, we ordered a soup, two appetizers, and two main dishes, which we shared family-style. The proportions were more than reasonable, and the final bill was comparable to other dining we had this trip with less quality and average service. We had no complaints with anything we ordered that evening.
The extras- They had a wide range of music playing in the background; some genres that were a little unexpected for the overall atmosphere of the restaurant, but it was very refreshing to hear that type of variety. Also, as we were leaving, I noticed some fleece blankets on the bench in the entryway, which I'm assuming is either for the comfort of those waiting to be seated or for those diners sitting in the patio. I said to myself, "Wow, they really thought of everything."
Overall, The TroUgh is a well-thoughtout restaurant with thoroughly good food, and I would recommend this establishment to just about anyone...food connoisseurs who either live in the area or who are traveling through, those looking for a special night out, or people who simply want an exciting and enjoyable food experience. After all, it's "where people eat." -

The food here was excellent. A lot of extras served throughout the meal which was nice. The bailey's chocolate cheesecake to wrap it up was exceptional. Service throughout the meal was very good. Highly recommended.

Don't let the name of this restaurant throw you! This restaurant is a Rocky Mountain jewel located on the Walk of Champions in Canmore. It was such a treat to dine here. Richard and Cheryl (owners) really know the hospitality business. They welcomed us warmly and provided attentive service.
But the best part about this restaurant is the fine food! From a halibut appetizer, flatbread with rosemary oil, sorbet, flavorful and tender Alberta Beef Tenderloin to the decadent chocolate torte and sticky toffee pudding, it was simply all wonderful. Beautiful presentation and great taste. Traveling to Canmore for a weekend getaway? Don't miss this restaurant if you are looking for a special night out. It is a great find in a Rocky Mountain town where most of the restaurants are quite casual. -

This is truly a lovely treat. The food was tasty, service was attentive (for Alberta, anyway) and it wasn't killer pricing. We received a tasty amuse bouche and they overheard it was my husband's birthday so they brought a wonderful dessert on the house. I would go back on my next visit to Canmore.
