I'm not a member at the Training Room, I just went for one training session with a friend of mine. The two of us wanted a lesson in boxing, and we were set up with Sam, the trainer. It was some of the best value for money I have ever received. Sam is an excellent trainer, my friend and I learned a great deal about boxing, we had a good workout, and had fun. Sam is knowledgeable and experienced in both fighting and training. He was genuinely concerned about my friend and I learning about boxing. Initially he was hesitant to do a one-off lesson, as he didn't feel we could learn what we wanted to know in one hour. It was true that we couldn't, but my friend is from out of town and we really couldn't do more than one day. Sam's solution was to just give us more time than we had paid for! He didn't want us to leave without taking our training to a point where he felt it was worth us being there. That is true commitment. Sam learned our names immediately and found out more about us as we trained so he could make the lesson and his analogies more relevant to us. He has a real talent for teaching and motivating.
Also, the facilities were great. Next time my friend is in town, we will definitely be going back. -

I've been a member here for five years, through three managers. It's always been the No-Frills of Toronto gyms, most of the folks here are years-loyal regulars who are here to work HARD and aren't so much into fancy soaps and steam rooms. It's the workout room you'd have in your unfinished basement (if you didn't live in a condo.)
The current manager, Angelo, is the best they've ever had, and is doing his very best to manage the place through a significant loss of square footage - no fault of their own to have lost it - and to keep the cardio area up and running and refreshed without raising member fees.
I pay today what I paid in 2005. Pretty rad.
Lots Of Cybex and nautilus, tons and tons of freeweights. Small cardio theatre - this is a weightlifters gym - but I'm an hour a day cardio girl and it's always served me just fine.
Boxers are all consistent die-hards and seem to love what they are doing up there making all that noise.
Trainer Farah Merchant runs body-pump style classes on Tues-Wed at 6 and cares about her students like they were dear friends. Julian Ho runs an athletic conditioning class on Fridays at 6 - and people, Julian is worth the price of membership alone. Believe it. Joannie is Stott Pilates certified and a hoot. I have heard amazing things about the Monday boot camp - the trainer hollers Jillian Michaels style while you work your way through burpees but I am too lazy to let her kick my ass for too long.
To make it short, it's my home, and it would be easy for this place to become home to the right sorts of low-maintenance people. Everyone knows everyone, and it's dependable.
Loses a store for somewhat shoddy showering situation. Clean, but positively crap soap. A few more amenities would go a long way (hair dryer, for instance.)
UPDATE: They've actually changed the soap! Now it smells like watermelons and lathers heaps. Hooray! -

I have been a member of The Training Room since April 2009. Not since joining, had I felt like I ever made the right personal fit with a gym. And I had belonged to many over the last 17 years.
The Training Room has been under NEW ownership for a little over a year now and the changes have been significant and very positive. The gym has cleaned up, brightened up and livened up considerably and is a very fresh and comfortable environment.
Since I am never on the same schedule, I get to work out at all different times. The staff during the day, evenings and on weekends are all approachable, knowledgeable and friendly. They take the time to talk to all members and to walk new ones through the machines and answer any questions. The variety of weights, machines and classes is great. The Boxing is awesome.
When I decided it was time to incorporate some personal training into my routine, the options were presented to me in a very reasonable way. There was NO hard sell and the specifics were geared to my needs and were flexible in terms of payment schedule. The membership/training fees are completely affordable. I feel I get an excellent combination of training and teaching. And my results have been very noticeable.
I love that The Training Room is a local Leslieville business that supports the needs of the diverse clientele.
I would have to agree completely with the most recent review that the NEW ownership is by far the best The Training Room has had. -

I've been going to the training room for about a year - and will probably continue my membership because it is SO close to my house... but... It's really not the type of facility I expect when forking over expensive gym fees.
The cardio machines are all at least 15-20 years old, and in pretty bad shape. Only one of three elliptical machines is usable, and the treadmills have all seen way better days. They also used to run about 10 fitness/yoga classes throughout the week, they have cut it to about 3-4.
Not the cleanest place ever- I noticed a water bottle top on the floor of the cardio area about three weeks ago, and it has yet to be picked/swept up.
The staff are all very sweet, and it's an inclusive environment, which I can't say for all gyms. -

I am officially a member of The Training Room. Coming from GoodLife for over 4 years this was a bit of a transition, but for the price you can't go wrong. Plus they have a 2-for-1 deal on until the end of November which makes it a steal!

Been a member coming up on two years. I've worked in the fitness and recreation field for coming up on 20 years.
The Good
* The gym has been around for years.
* Nice to support small business and not a chain gym which tends to not care so much.
* evening and weekend staff are friendly
* has plenty of equipment
* reasonable price
* staff are not pushy with selling personal training. It's there if you need it. (but not sure if it's just me as I told them I use to be a trainer and didn't need help)
* very rarely busy
* lots of cardio equipment, free weights and strength training equipment.
* most cardio machines are in good shape and never have to wait for it.
* 5 TV's where you can tune in on a FM radio while you do cardio
* free parking
* Weekday hours are good, I think they are 6am-11pm
* has a boxing ring if your into boxing (I think it's an extra fee though)
* has some yoga and fitness classes (never took them but they are in a nice room one level up, which doesn't allow people watching)
* most trainers look like they know what they are doing, but sometimes there professionalism is not at it's highest (e.g. chewing gum while working, just training clients but not teaching them to be self dependent) BUT - the clients seem pretty happy about the services
* most members are friendly, and people tend to be respectful with cleaning up after themselves and sharing equipment
* women don't seem intimated to use the free weight room
* good mix of older people and younger people.
* stand up tanning machine (if your into that)
* they have kids boxing classes
The not so good
* changeroom never has paper towel in dispenser, always sitting on counter and partly wet, and its questionable how clean the floors are.
* strength training equipment is a little cramped
* weekend hours close a little early at 6pm, wish they would stay open till 8 or 9pm
* daytime staff are not so friendly, not rude, but just not friendly unless your a friend of theirs
* free weights are older but still work great.
* music sometimes can vary, from dance music, to a mix, to all old rock. Depends who is working.
* only one location, so if you travel around the city out outside the city, your membership is not recognized.
* no snack bar and vending machines are just ok
* members are allowed to bring their dogs and stay in the front lobby. The odd one comes into the changeroom, which is kind of odd.
* the odd child also comes in the weight room and follows mom and dad around.
* staff don't monitor the free weight area, only the check in area
* if you need help you have to get a personal trainer as there is not floor staff to give general help
* no child minding service but it doesn't seem to need it -

I've been a member for a few years now. Price is decent. Gym isn't super fancy but they have everything you need to get a good workout. It's pretty much the neighbourhood gym and you always tend to run into "the regulars".
