Now THIS is what I'm talking about!  Vancouver needs more of this.  It was like a healthier version of my fave thing when I eat out: a chicken burger with yam fries.  The yam fries were like hand cut with no extra garbage on them and the burger came with a gluten free bun.  AWESOME!  The chicken was delicious!  My boyfriend had a regular burger with cheese and mushrooms and bacon.  It looked so good.  He devoured it and loved it.

The service was very friendly.  (Only he didn't come by the table to ask how the meal was because if he had I would have asked for more mayo for the burger.  [I love mayo to death.  The burger could have used more sauce.]  He came at the end.  It doesn't bother me too much though since he was super nice.)  I liked that they have a sign 'seat yourselves' so we could sit where ever we wanted.  I find it annoying in a restaraunt when it's not busy and then they seat you in some crap spot so it's nice to have freedom of choice.  haha  I liked the decor with some local art and the casual vibe.  It makes me feel like I could come here anytime.

So happy to find a place that offers gluten free food that tastes so good and fresh and isn't a rip-off price served alongside glutenous food, so that it just feels like I'm normal.  We will definately go back!  Can't wait!  I want it now!

What a great choice here along this stretch of Kingsway!  Not enough pubs.

Ordered the seafood melt, w/ plenty of cheese, tasted yummy.  Opted for the green salad, also very fresh w/ sliced cucumbers, diced tomatoes, green peppers and the usual good leaves.

Has a few high def tvs, and pretty cool booth seating.  Friendly staff, and didn't pressure any upselling for drinks, tho it was only lunch ;)

Also have a pretty good choice for desserts, next time I'll try the chocolate mocha cheesecake.

Plenty parking along kingsway & side streets.

I'll be back.  esp for the breakfast served til 5pm daily, just a much better alternative than's Bon's!

I love holes in the wall and this place fits the bill.

This unassuming little diner offers great food and service at a very reasonable price.  They also have a room in the back that can be booked for parties.

I've tried both the "Naughty and Nice Poutine" and the chicken strips.

The "Naughty and Nice Poutine" consists of a poutine made with veggie gravy and a salad.  The poutine is delicious (albeit not authentic) and I love the vinaigrette used on the salad.  If I had the recipe for the vinaigrette, I'd probably eat a lot more salad!

The chicken strips appeared to be made in house.  I liked that they were made with actual chicken and not some unidentifiable chicken mush used in the McNuggets at the McDonald's across the street.  The chicken strips were tasty and tender.  The accompanying honey mustard dip was mayonnaise based and went well with the chicken.

For all you gluten intolerant foodies out there, the Tipper is aware of gluten intolerance (I've noticed that when you say "celiac" or "gluten intolerant" at some dining establishments the response is a blank stare) and offers gluten free buns for their burgers.

    SCORE!

I am hesitant to announce how much i love this place because I know it's a local hole in the wall that likes to keep an intimate customer base.  I really appreciate the extra mile this team goes through to make sure you're not only having a great meal, but also enjoying wonderful service.

To the food - Awesome!  I really didn't expect quality like this across from McD's but that's what a great find is, right?

I will be back over and over, until the owners change or I become GLUTEN intolerant - oh wait, they have a delicious GLUTEN-Free menu as well.

    Cya there.

The Tipper gets better and better each time I visit.

The owner actually read my last review and decided to call me.  Last time I was there, I complained about food coming out too slowly, the back room being too cold, and heaters as well as the TV not working.  Well, he told me all those things were addressed and invited me back.  That was HUGE for me.  First of all, he fixed all the negative things I had mentioned in my review and second of all, he actually called me.  I really appreciate businesses that care about what their customers thought.  When I met him in person, he was sincere and a down to earth person.  What a great guy!

The food was delicious.  My husband and I ordered the Naughty and Nice Poutine.  What an adorable name!  The "Naughty" was the poutine, which the gravy was made from vegetables and was flavorful without being too salty.  (I hate poutine that is too salty.)  They use cheddar cheese in their poutine as well, which I liked.  The "Nice" was the salad and was fabulous.  They make their own dressing and you can taste the freshness in both dressing and crisp vegetables.  Surprisingly, my husband actually ate most of the salad and he's not a big salad person.  We also had the BLT sandwich with a side of seafood chowder.  The BLT was on sourdough bread and had a nice smokey taste.  My husband and I gobbled up the sandwich and enjoyed every bite, we didn't even leave the crust.  The seafood chowder was thick and full of seafood.  It was my favorite thing out of all our dishes and full of quality ingredients.  They don't use fillers since I don't recall getting any potato in my chowder.

What a difference from my previous visits!  I am truly glad I had a chance to eat here again and will definitley be back again and again!

*Note - they serve breakfast / brunch too

I think I've teleported to an alternate universe where there exists a place on Kingsway between boundary and Broadway that's NOT some kind of ethnic restaurant.
This is more of a hipster diner than a restaurant (booths, bar stools, breakfast till 5).  I had the 3 cheese burger with bacon - if they ask you if you want bacon for an extra $1, SAY YES.  2 large pieces of crunchy peppered bacon.
Is that a live band in he back room playing?  Yup.

Our go-to brunch place has now got all the things I require to be completely satisfied.

    BENNY's!!!!

Available on the weekends only - a selection of 5 or 6 different types from the traditional, a feta and herbs benny, a samble scramble benny(not poached eggs) and a TAB benny (tomato, avocado and pepper bacon)

Honey went for the samble scramble (not a surprise) and I went for the TAB (tomato, avocado and pepper bacon - not a surprise choice for me either).  There was a while a few years ago that I'd overdosed on avocado and had a bad reaction to it everytime I ate it.  Thankfully that is no longer the case as I'd have been in big trouble - avocado-A-plenty on this lovely brunch munch.  Generous with everything - very nice sauce and the usual home taters on the side.

Add coffee and my love as company and things are good.

Has become a bit of a hipster haven - but as my wise daughter points out:  saying we liked something before it was cool makes US the ultimate hipsters....who knew?  Time to resurect my buddy holly glasses and cardigans.

The Tipper is a good restaurant if you want laid back and good quality fresh food.  Burgers are top notch and the salads are great. Portion size is perfect. The atmosphere is funky, they've hung local artists paintings throughout the restaurant. Service was friendly and quick.

Our next visit will be for brunch, hope it's as good as dinner!

This place has a diverse selection of burgers and pastas. I went here for lunch on a weekday and it was quite empty. It can get busy at dinner on weekends or on game nights - is what the server told me.

I tried the salmon burger and the grilled portebello. I was surprised that the salmon burger was so tasty! Usually, salmon burgers are dry and overcooked, but this one was made perfectly. Yam fries were crisp and satisfying.

I would come back to this place to try out their other burgers.

I just recently moved to the neighborhood and decided to give the Tipper a try. After searching unsuccessfully for a comfortable neighborhood pub/restaurant in our old location, we were used to being disappointed when trying new places. Not so with the Tipper! :)

I've only been in the neighborhood for a week and already I'm a regular - we've been three times already! Now, that's mostly due to an unpacked kitchen, but hey... it's nice to have someplace like the Tipper to go in such a scenario!

We've tried the chicken burger w/ caesar salad, breakfast burrito, tomato avocado and bacon benny and the penne w/ tomato and basil. Every dish delivered exactly what it advertised - good flavors with a feeling of home cooking. I've been satisfied every time!

All of their breakfasts come with hand cut potatoes and every table has an array of hot sauces - as a hot sauce connoisseur this gets them serious bonus points in my book! I have a feeling we'll be dropping by for weekend brunch fairly often. :)

The service there is great too - every server I've had has been friendly and attentive. I highly recommend the Tipper to anyone in the neighborhood looking for a great place to grab a pint ($4 for a regular, $5 for a giant one!) or a satisfying laid back meal.

I had a bad day today. I didn't feel like cooking. My shiny new entertainment book came in the mail and we decided on the Tipper.

I'm glad we did...We shared a plate of yam fries, the big tipper salad and a beef dip with soup. It was good. Sometimes you don't want anything fancy, you want some homecooked style food and that's what we got.

The service was good. I think more people should come to the Tipper. Cute little booths, a bar with a TV, and there is something in the back that looks like more space.. Maybe I will ask next time.

This is a good place to come when you don't feel like anything else. A place to come and have a conversation with your boyfriend about life... yes indeed!

Oh Snap!!  I'm a fan.  It's simple, delicious, and the atmosphere is fantastic-- comfortable and down to earth.  The owner, Colin is the neatest guy and made us feel SO at home.   The soups are amazing (I've been twice in the past two weeks so I tried them both), as well as the Chicken burger.. the pasta...yam fries, deserts... I'm going back to try more.  It is a place where you truly have a dining 'experience'--and believe me, I've paid a lot more at places with  fancy decor with not an ounce of 'experience' to the meal.  Both times my friends and I left feeling so pumped.

BEST of all-- there's a fantastic private room attached to the restaurant where you can host events FREE (just order some food or drinks to compensate).  I love putting events together so the Tipper is a dream come true for me!!  AND I live in the Eastside (Knight/Kingsway) so it's nice to have a great restaurant in my hood.

Oh and ANOTHER fantastic quality:  the booths are horseshoe shaped and can fit up to TEN people (in my opinion), so it's a great appy/party place.  True story!!  Check it out!  : )

I just found this coupon online for the place so I'll be using it this week:

My friend and I stopped by for a late lunch/early dinner. I ordered the chicken strips with a side of house salad, and my friend ordered a pound of wings and the house salad as well. We also shared the soup of the day, which was red curry with rice. The food came out super fast, and it was all really good. The chicken strips weren't dry, the wings were super tasty, and my friend loved her salad.

It's a really comfortable, laid back diner-style restaurant-slash-bar, which appeals to all age groups, from us young folks to seniors alike. We'd definitely like to come back to try more items from the menu.

Menu: large breakfast menu (although no eggs benedict), served till 5 pm. Appies, burgers and sandwiches, pasta, and more.
Price: Appetizers and burgers are reasonably priced (starting at around $8); main courses are $14-20-ish?
Service: our server was super friendly and helpful.
Ambiance: unpretentious, no-frills diner. Additional room in the back with more seating.

OK, so it's slightly off the beaten path (or at least a few stops away from my usual stomping grounds), but this place is definitely laid back and makes you feel very comfy and relaxed. Also, one of the few places that will host an event and take resos during a playoff game! Plus: Stone Creek cider on tap, and yam fries that are actually just yams and salt - no gluten-filled batter! Yay!! (All at very decent prices, I might add) Our server was very friendly and fast, and the overall vibe was super chill. Sweet!

So I'm going to be charitable and assume I caught the Tipper with it's pants down. That said, I was quite unimpressed with what I saw (and heard!) and won't be back.

First off, nice looking place, cheerful service. I stopped in at about 11am for a bite, and really liked the look of the place. On top of that, it was right beside my childhood barber shop (that my dad still goes to) so that was a cool surprise!

But, when I got down to it, things went south...fast! The menu looked good, I saw some neat things like a Bison burger, but I was told they didn't have it in. Then I was politely told not to order salad because they were "low" on it. I'm sorry, that's strike one. If you don't stock salad, it means you either have really low turnover and your veg has gone bad, or you were just stupid and didn't order it.

So I decided to get their breakfast, something they do till 5pm.

While waiting though, I got my coffee (which was mediocre) and overheard the server tell another couple who had just walked in she couldn't serve them a glass of milk because it was expired!!

I thought about leaving at that point, but decided to stay because breakfast options in the area were non existent. Out came my food, and it was ok but certainly not worth the price ($10). They served it with Jam and Peanut Butter (nice touch), but when I asked for Tabasco they said they didn't have it. Instead they had Sriracha and scotch bonnet pepper sauce. I'm sorry, but if you're going to serve breakfast make sure you have Tabasco on hand.

I ate and left pretty quickly, not impressed, but not angry either. The food is so-so and expensive for what you get, but I just can't get over the missing menu items and expired milk.

Breakfast is my test about how good a resto really is. If you screw it up, you need to go back to the drawing board and start again.

I'm admittedly a bit of a fish out of water. I came up to Vancouver from San Francisco to take a tour of UBC, and on my very tight budget, opted for the Day's Inn Metro. Across the street, I stumbled across The Tipper almost completely by accident, and I'm incredibly glad that I did.

I've come to The Tipper now for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and I think it's safe to say that this is the best that it gets. The staff is incredibly sweet and friendly, the atmosphere is wonderfully cozy and inviting, and the food is just fantastic. Hands down the best omelet I've ever had, and that's saying quite a bit! The food is very reasonably priced, and the soothing overhead music is nicely complimented by some very cool paintings on the wall, creating a very welcoming atmosphere.

From the fantastic food to the wonderfully kind staff, The Tipper is very easily a five out of five stars, and the reason I signed up for a Yelp account!

I just went to The Tipper for dinner and it was really an amazing experience! Our server Cameron was really friendly.  They have a retro kind of feel with great big booth seats and overall it was just super COMFORTABLE.  Perfect way to end the week-end with a nice Sunday meal.  I had the pasta special with fresh prawns in a cream and dill sauce.  It was served with an amazing bun with a light garlic basil butter.  So tasty!  I love this place... can't wait to come back when there is live music playing in the back room.

I think this is a hidden gem.  Not only are the walls lined with cool local art and they have lots of live entertainment in the separate review room but staff is warm and efficient.  The yam fries are the bomb and the black bean dip is not your average out of the jar salsa.  Big chunks of fresh tomatoes, onions and beans.   I tried it for breakfast too and had the BELCH breakfast sandwich which combined all your breakfast must-haves into one sandwich.  Nice work Tipper, I'll be back.
