I would agree with a lot of other posters - the other services i have had didn't wow me, but they do waxing really well. any place that can give you a brazilian in under 20 mins (including paying and booking my next) is alright by me.
everything is very clean - and they use new tools each time you get a pedi which is appreciated.
i have been to both locations (queen west and east), but prefer the atmosphere at leslieville over queen west - more laid back.
if you want a day at the spa - this is not your place. But if you want to get some services done in an clean, efficient manner in a relaxed and friendly environment, i would definitely recommend it. since it is all open, it would also be super fun to go with a bunch of girlfriends to get mani/pedis.
plus, they book online. -
Review from Lara P.
I cannot believe I paid so much for a mani and pedi that took so long and my nails were painted quite badly. I could have gone elsewhere for a third of the price and have gotten the same end result. Yes the service was great. They were friendly and they offered lovely teas. They were very nice but I came for a service, which I felt they fell flat on. My nails are unevenly coloured and for some reason the person helping me had really shaky hands so they had to correct their mistakes a couple times but they kept adding more colour instead of starting from scratch, which resulted in the colours bleeding into my cuticle in the evening. I was crestfallen because I wanted to love this place. But I think they missed the wow factor somewhere along the way.

The decision to de-fuzz my hot-pocket was an easy one... actually going through with it is a different story! Since I am now a pro at having these done on a regular basis, I thought I'd share the experience with other curious but nervous wooly mammoth Yelpers... please note this service is available for boys and girls!
The online last minute booking system is great because I can usually book my appointment the night before to avoid surprise visits from Aunt Flow if I pre-book too early (although they can still accommodate you if you still want a Brazilian during her visit *shivers*)
I am super comfortable with Julie my aesthetician, but for those not quite porn star enough to expose your caslopus to a female stranger don't worry... they are used to seeing these things day in and day out and they are pretty professional about it.
The prices at Ten Spot aren't the cheapest. at $55 a pop, they are probably the most expensive but I think comfort both physically and emotionally are really important so in that respect it's worth it.
Tell your aesthetician it's your first time and they will walk you through it. What makes the whole thing more enjoyable is the TV playing 30 Rock or the Office in your room, the tea they service you when you walk in and the gossip/banter you get to dish out while you are on the de-fuzzing slab.
I have always been curious about Brazilians... specifically with regards to the pain, so I was happy to hear that this location uses hard and soft wax. The soft wax is similar to what is used on a regular waxed surface. They use this on your bikini lining and outer upper areas of the hot-pocket which are less sensitive. The pain at this point is about a 6 out of 10.
Then comes the dreaded sensitive areas of the hot-pocket! For those they use hard wax which is applied like shellac and removed without the aid of strips once it hardens. It sticks to the hair and not the skin which makes it less painful but still a 7 out of 10.
Last but not least is the flip... which is when you roll over and let her de-fuzz your backside. This is actually done using soft wax but only a 4 out of 10 for pain. When it's all done you'll get a chance to inspect yourself in the mirror and let your aesthetician know if they missed anything. Then off you go.
You'll be a bit tingly or sore for about 24 hours so I would recommend avoiding "vigorous" activities for that period... Also to avoid in-gorwns buy a bottle of TenSkin.Listed in: God save the Queen...…, Well we're movin on up, To the…, I feel pretty... oh so pretty…, Who's down with ROTD? Yeah you…

I have had a number of services done at both 10spot locations, manis, pedis, facials. For all those, they wouldn't rate especially high for me. I can have a quicker less expensive nail service done elsewhere, and a facial done in a non-shared space for not too much more. The services weren't bad, but not my style.
But there's one thing that 10spot does well, and that's waxing. Completely clean and sanitary, not at all awkward, quick and as Brazilians go, rather painless. I have had Meg at the Leslieville location and she's sweet and a great esthetitican.
Also, love being able to book online! -

As a proud Leslievillian I have decided to fully embrace the east side and find a new everything over here. Hair Salon, Yoga Studio and now Waxing Place. It was bound to happen sooner or later, but then alas a Groupon.
I made an appointment for tonight just after work which was really easy. Bonis points, You can make your bookings ONLINE. This is my new favorite feature of any salon or spa.
The Ten Spot is in the same building/complex as Queen Margarita Pizza, Red Rocket Coffee. It is just down the alleyway to the west. The space itself was spotless, bright, well decorated and felt comfortable right away. I had idiotically forgotten my printed Groupon at the office and the reception was great about it, letting me logon online after my appointment. I was offered a drink as well.
My appointment was with Jayna who walked me into a little waxing room, put the Office on and gave me a towel for modesty and some wipes for cleanliness. She was really good and the entire process was almost completely painfree. Honestly. I was surprised. It was also quick, I was done in less than a half an hour. She had a great attitude, was so friendly, made me feel comfortable and not awkward at all.
I am giving a full five stars because even though it is expensive, the experience was fully comfortable, Jayna was great, there is ONLINE BOOKING, 10% off my return vist, and you get handy confirmation emails both when you rebook and a day before your visit. Plus their website is adorable and has a clever, snarky, carefree tone to the copy. Hey, I am an art director - thats worth a star.
Will be back. Booked already.Listed in: Leslieville, Riverdale &…, Best of the Best, Leslieville Proper

Review from Diane C.
What better low-key way to celebrate one's birthday than with a pedicure?
Thanks to my bro and his girlfriend (thanks for the gift card!), I wasn't getting any run-of-the-mill pedi. I was going to have a Ten Spot pedi.
So I trudged on down to the Leslieville location, rather than Queen St. West (mainly because it's the closest to me). The place was empty when I arrived - probably 'cause it was a Tuesday - so I didn't wait at all.
Unlike some of my fellow Yelpers, I am not a pedi veteran, so I can't say whether I thought there were too few or just enough polishes to choose from. But I liked what was available - I actually had trouble trying to decide!
My esthetician (or is that pedicurist?) Meg was super-nice! She made me feel comfy during the whole experience - from skin sloughing to foot massage, to the sugar-paste exfoliant, which left my feet smelling like vanilla ice cream. And with a movie playing and magazines at my disposal, I wasn't bored at all.
Overall, my brief first experience was great and I've got no immediate complaints. Would I go there again? Yes, but only because I still have money left on my gift card - ha ha!
(This place ain't for the stingy - that pedi was ** $50 ** !)
As for the end result, the real test will see how long my Ten Spot work lasts. I've had pedis at Star Nails on Gerrard (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...), and at an economic $20, a Star Nails job lasts about four weeks - it's a steal.
But if you want to splurge, then the Ten Spot is definitely a good place to try. -

After having my face waxed on Tuesday, I wake up Friday morning and the skin above my lip has peeled over night. Not just a little bit of peeling, it was enough for me to do a double take in the mirror and start yanking at it. I have never had this happen before in my 15 odd years of getting my upper lip waxed. Upon closer inspection in my zoom mirror, there are a lot of blonde hairs that are still lingering at the lip line.
Again, not impressed.Listed in: Wax on, wax off

Review from Mariko M.
Bought a Groupon for this place and redeemed my coupon this afternoon (12/18/10). I called last Friday and was able to get a Saturday appointment easily. Mind you, they're open late on weekdays so you can easily drop by after work.
I was able to find street parking. In fact, I found a spot right in front of The Ten Spot, which was awesome. It's not facing the street and you have to go through a little pathway. Fortunately, there is a big sign so you'll find this establishment easily.
My first impression when I walked in was that it was quite clean and the decor was pretty urban, funky, and cool. Reception was friendly and quickly took my jacket upon arrival.
Julie did my waxing and she was really good! I was offered a drink and before starting the waxing, Julie explained everything. The waxing was relatively painless and it only took about 40 minutes. Each private waxing room has a television so I watched an episode and half of 'The Office.'
I don't live nor work in the area so I'm not sure when I'll be back. However, I highly recommend this place for waxing if this location is convenient for you. I would also recommend Julie (I HOPE this is her name...she's petite with blonde hair) for the job. -

Would not go back. Not only that, but would try to sway friends not to go, as well. Have been here twice, both for brazilians. The first time was decent - nothing to rave about, but not a bad experience. The girl was very business like and quick, and I had no complaints, although I wasn't too pleased that it was hard wax.
This last time, however, was horrid. It was a different girl this time, and she was a bit brutal, a bit too quick and sloppy. When I left I still had places she'd missed. She left the room after the wax, and said, "Look it over and let me know if I missed anything." But honestly? I didn't want her anywhere near me after that, so I wasn't about to speak up.
When I got home, I was a bit uncomfortable still, and in the privacy of my bathroom I gave it another look and discovered why. There was hard wax stuck to my most private parts and just left there. Not a little bit, not a spot or two, as you might expect from a middle-of-the-road waxing. But ENTIRE STRIPS. You know what's fun? Removing hard wax yourself. From your most sensitive areas.
Mind you, the manicures and pedicures may not be bad - they've had at least 2 going every time I've been. The receptionist always seems a bit snotty, and the atmosphere is not at all comfortable or relaxing - instead very, "Aren't we posh and modern!" Where most places have comfortable chairs for people to wait in, this place has a row of tables and hard chairs, so you wind up feeling like you're in a cheap cafeteria.
I wanted this to work out, Ten Spot. I did. You show Arrested Development DVDs in the waxing rooms. You're easy to get to, appointments are always open. But it just can't happen. I won't return. -

In theory it's a good idea. A cheerful little beauty bar that's accessible and easy. But in practice, not so sure. The subterranean space is wide open, peppered with brushed steel industrial furniture that used to be kind of cool. The receptionist says to take a seat, but it's not quite obvious where. In the centre of the white brick space are two apple green banquettes for pedicures. There's long table, but it's not apparent if it's for staff or customer use. And behind a series of sliding glass doors are small rooms with day beds that don't look very inviting.
The staff wanders around much like one would expect at Aldo, except a little cooler, and slightly less helpful. I have my treatment, and it's fine. I've heard from friends and neighbors, that 'fine' is about as good as it gets. There is a trio of girls on the banquette enjoying their foot scrub, but I would rather hold out for the grand throne-like massage chairs down the street, where the ladies work like tigresses to get rid of winter flesh.
Still, the Ten Spot is a cheery little place, just as M&M's are a cheerful little bag of chocolates. Sadly, I'm not really a fan of M& M's and would prefer to hold out for the real deal; chocolate that's smooth, satisfying, and intense. Just a personal preference really. Candy coating just isn't my thing. -
Review from Jenny T.
This company truly takes their negative feedback seriously. They send a little online survey right after you set foot out the door and last time I provided some negative feed back. I was surprised to see the business owner, Lisa contacting me directly via email in response to this feedback. I was actually very impressed to see a business owner responding positively in face of a negative situation. She said that more training would be provided to their staff to improve service standards.
I was invited for a complimentary facial with Meg E. and I have to once again say that Meg E. is excellent! The dermatologica facial was very professional. It starts off with a survey you fill out that ask you everything from your name to what medical conditions you have. Then you change into a towel shirt and sit on a barber chair for your pre-cleanse, scrub, massage, extraction, mask, toner and moisturizer. It was very thorough, however I think more attention could be put on the eye area since that is the area that ages the quickiest - but I think Meg was just weary of the fact that I had on contacts (which was asked in the survey).
I absolutely loved the facial and can see how this could definitely be the bread and butter of their business. As far as the rest of their services, I am sure that in time it will improve, especially with the training that is being provided and an attentive business owner.1 Previous Review: Show all »

This was my 2nd time in, but the first pedicure service with Tricia - she was really attentive, lots of smiles, very accommodating - and my nails looked perfect! I will definitely schedule an appointment with her again.
One criticism: 'The Ten Spot Ten Club Card' - I think you would have me working a lot harder to make appointments at your salon if I knew I would get a free beauty service after five of the same, rather than the ten that it's at right now. It's going to take me till next summer to earn a free pedicure! Just sayin'. -
Review from Kat F.
I'm happy to report that The Ten Spot has done right by me once again. I went back for a wax with Lisa, who was both competent, professional and embodied just the right amount of snark and sass that I've come to appreciate from someone who's defuzzing my body. I'd go see her again if my regular esthetician wasn't available, but the manicures remain out of my price range considering the absurd frequency with which I get them.
