Decent Mexican food by Vancouver standards (which isn't saying much) We need immigration to let more Mexicans in the city because the mex. food I have in Mexico, Phoenix or even Seattle is much better than anything in this city I've tried. Good prices here too 3 giant tacos for $8 thats a good deal in my books.

It was alright! I ordered a taco salad and my buddies had burritos and tacos. Prices were alright - not ridiculously cheap, but from what I remember, the serving size was fair. My taco salad was pretty lacking in guacamole and crispy things. The last time I had one was at some other place and the bowl itself was like made out of a taco or something but this was just served in those metallic-y disposable trays that you get sometimes when you order take out. Also not spicy at all - the guy at the counter told me that their "hot" aren't very spicy and he was right on the dot with that. Definitely abused the hot sauce bottles they put on the tables...pretty sure we used a whole bottle of Tabasco.

if you're going to name your restaurant after a particular menu item, it ought to be outstanding. The only thing these tacos have going for them is their outlandishly big size. (Maybe this is why people call them "California style"?)
I ordered two tacos, beef and fish, loaded and spicy. They came mounded with filling, guacamole, corn, onions, and cilantro on two wheat tortillas, along with fresh lime wedges on the side. (Lime and cilantro is one my favourite flavour combinations.) I'm glad I didn't order three, as I might at most taco joints - most tacos I've had lately have been much smaller than the ones at Taco Shack.
Digging in, the first bites of the beef taco were good. I didn't detect much of the "spicy" I ordered, although I could have added hot sauce if I wished. By the time I went for the fish taco, it was soggy. The fillings all fell through the tortillas when I picked it up. I ripped off bits of the tortilla and used them to pick up the taco bits now littering the plate, but after a few bites, I noticed the fish just wasn't very good anyway. It was deep-fried, but had no distinctive taste other than a hint of salt. Blah.
The one bright spot in this brightly decorated spot was the Jarritos soda. Not only is it included in the lunch special deals, but they also have the widest range of flavours I've seen ... mandarin, tamarind, lime, strawberry, the gang's all here. I heart the Mexican soda pop. At least there was some flavour to wash away the blandness of the food. -

This place is much improved since the new owners have taken over. The portions are huge and the don't skimp out on loading the tacos and burritos up. They have specials as well. If you are hungry and need something that hasn't hit a deep drier than give this place a try. My only complaint is that there could be a tad more meat in the burrito.

Stumbled upon this place after a day on the beach, I liked how it was so open and chill-looking, but what really made me decide to try it out was the food I saw the customers eating...looked amazing!
The menu is really no-frills and straightforward and really easy to choose from....I ordered the whole-wheat quesadillsa with chicken, the price was RIDICULOUSLY good, especially for the portion sizes..the food arrived quickly and smelled amazing...the flavor was just....perfect...will definitely be back...really great value and just really really tasty food -

Oh how whimsical. A taco SHACK! Though the name is purely whimsy, it's not a shack at all, but a small restaurant sandwiched between other small establishments. There's no wind in your hair, no sand under your toes or the smell of salt water in the air. There is, however, pictures of Santa Cruz beaches on the wall and indie surfer music playing. It's lunchtime and I work in a cubicle, I'll take it.
I don't, however, take tacos, so I looked at the menu and decided on a burrito. The big guy working the till (apparently the owner) looked decidedly unenthused with me and took my order with a minimum of fanfare and parade. Was he stoned? Was this part of the 'shackitude' of this place? Who knows.
Whatever, I sat down to wait. The food everyone else was having looked good, big, heaping tacos. I don't understand tacos, why would I want a big mess of food on a round disc of flour? I got my burrito, sorry MY BURRITO. Because a food stuff that weighs easily that of a newborn baby deserves capslock.
Dear newborn burrito, I shall call you 'The Fat Maker'.
I had initially ordered the vegetarian, but they had fish on the menu and the laconic response of the owner 'yeah, it's good' spurred me on to try it. With enthusiasm like that, how could you refuse? The burrito was good, really good. One of the best I've had. Not a lot of guacamole, but enough that I could live with it.
Except the size, HUGE, too much rice. I'm European, we can't fit that much food in us. Next time I will ask for a 'Continental' burrito, it'll come with an orange juice and a café au lait and be decently sized. -

I consider them one of Vancouver's original burrito/taco joints. Very simple menu and the taste is great. Don't go unless you're really hungry...the size of the burritos and tacos is insane. Great place to grab some food after a long walk on the beach! In the evenings you can go next door to The Corduroy for some nice drinks too...

I dropped in for lunch on a busy Wednesday, both the lovely lady at the cash and the dude making my tacos were awesome.
For $8 I ordered 3 chicken tacos extra spicy, extra cilantro and all the fixings. What I got was not at all what I was expecting. In a good way!
3 Tacos turned out to be 6 tacos they were packed so large (And they give an extra soft shell per taco), loaded with guacamole, sour cream, hot sauce, corn, salsa, and of course chicken and tons of fresh Cilantro i loved it.
Just the right extra spiciness and well worth $8 for a quick delicious meal. -

One word, yum!
We stopped in here after a lovely stroll on the beach to grab a snack and went for the three tacos. For $7.99 we got three huge tacos, that we managed to split into six.
The tacos were really fresh, we had chicken and it came with onions, cilantro, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream... the works.
It was decently speedy, we were the only ones in there when we got there. Great for a snack and the tacos would have been more than enough for one person for a meal. -

Don't let the name fool you - this place serves a mean taco or burrito. The staff are always great and there's an excellent selection of bottled sodas to choose from.

I really really really want to like this place. Really!
Vancouver is not a city for Mexican food. So you might think opening a really good Mexican place would be a sure thing. But Taco Shack doesn't try to make Mexican food. They aim to replicate California style tacos - a totally different breed than Mexican. I like a good California style taco as well, so that would be grand. But the tacos are just ok - really nothing special. There are many taco trucks in California that would blow the shack out of the salsa bowl!
They are owned and operated by the same folks behind Vera's Burgers.Listed in: Vancouver Latin and Caribbean…, Rewards Network Joy

Ohhh I am so full. So. Full. Our office has moved locations and so in effort to try out the new surrounding restaurants, Taco Shack won as my first stop.
Now that I read other reviews and see that it's owned by Vera's, I understand the layout of the restaurant. Basic ordering counter and a few wooden tables. Walls are randomly decorated with pictures and the menu boards are large and easy to read. There was a staff of three people who were very nice and eager to fill each order. One on cash, one on the grill, and one to wrap everything up!
Food option cover the basics. Tacos. Burritos. Quesadilla. You got it. I ordered a steak burrito, white tortilla, mild spice. They ask if you want everything on it, and I think perhaps what 'everything' includes should be written down somewhere. I had to ask, along with the next people to place their order. But yes, 'everything' wins. Guac, salsa, cabbage, corn salsa, cilantro, black beans, rice, cheese, yikes. The steak was super tender and the burrito is giant. There's no chance of wrapping your mouth around 1/3rd of it. But it's delicious and everything was very nicely seasoned. Mild spice was perfect for me as it provided a bit of heat but not enough to make you fan your mouth or wish your water glass was the size of a bathtub.
At $8 for either 3 tacos, a quesadilla, or burrito, this place makes a quick meal out highly affordable. You won't go away hungry, but rather looking for a place to nap off your food coma.Listed in: Worplace Neighborhood Haunts

To grab a quick bite, this place serves up good burritos. They also have tacos and four layer dips, but I've never tried those.
In terms of burritos, you can have it with beef, chicken or fish. I like the chicken one on whole wheat tortilla. I like how it's like subway style, where you can watch them make it, and then tell them to add extras or omit certain items as it's being made. I usually like extra guacamole, cabbage, and lime. It's usually young teens working here, so they can get a little impatient, but just bear with them, and you'll be ok.
Meat, rice, beans, cheese, pico de gallo, salsa, guacamole, cabbage, lettuce, tomato, in a big juicy burrito! -

I love this place. Simple authentic menu and simple seating. Great food. The owner is great also.

Not the best Mexican food, but it will suffice in a pinch. Definitely better than Burrito Bros down the street. Doughy, cheesy stuff that fills your stomach, but at times makes me wish I were bulimic.

I use to live right next to this place, so I would go here almost every night. It really depends on who u get to make ur taco. I say that because you want the generous person that stuffs ur taco. The best is steak and chicken. The fish is okay. Get it with the hot sauce, no cabbage, and tons of lime and quacamole. Ur set :)

I think this place is great! A favorite of mine to stop by on our way to the beach. It's the best non veggie Mexican place in the city. Friendly staff, great guacamole, killer chicken burrito! Finally a decent place in Vancouver to get some more than just decent Mexican!

I had been to this place once several years ago when it first opened, and I wasn't impressed with the food and it was expensive for what you got.
I hadn't planned on returning, but recently a friend talked me into it and am I ever glad I did. I learned that the ownership of the restaurant had recently changed, and what a noticeable improvement in the quality of food as a result!
Definitely on my list of place to go to from now on.
