The Sweet Potato and I - we have a good thing goin'. Two or three times a week, our worlds collide; just the perfect amount to keep our relationship fresh 'n relevant. You know, much like their GLORIOUS SELECTION OF PRODUCE.

I'm a fervent supporter of farmers markets, but in this work-a-day world it is slightly difficult to manage a consistent market schedule (if they are not in your immediate vicinity). Lucky for ME (and also you), The Sweet Potato keeps a rainbow supply of bright, local plant edibles. They're priced to please, and just as farmer fresh as your mom.

They stock mostly anything else a gal could need - nutritional yeast, hemp seeds, maca powder - you know, all that typical woman stuff.

Many items are actually cheaper at Essence of Life, but due to my High Park transplant and EoL's earlier closing time, convenience wins. Also The Sweet Potato is cash registered by the sweetest of gals!

They're open til 8pm (or 9pm, later in the week), which is wonderful for us folk who work til 7ish.

    Pros:
-Great selection of vegan/veg prepackaged foods, and soy-based products
-Cheaper soy-milk than the big grocery store around the corner!
    -Awesome staff
-Good selection of products which you mind typically find in a drug store including soap, deoderant, toothpaste, etc.  Lot of vegan products in these categories too.
-Frequent sales on things like oatmeal, and cereal

    Cons:
-Nothing noteworthy here - I wish the owners would consider taking a discount card like that from the Toronto Vegetarian Association.

I admit I'm an unrepentant hippie who gets most of my produce at farmers' markets and has panic attacks when forced to patronise the local Price Chopper. But Toronto has winter, and even the most committed locavore needs vitamin C (not to mention shampoo.) So I was delighted to find The Sweet Potato on a stretch of Dundas dominated by pawn shops and storefront churches until the neighbourhood had the good sense to lift the liquor prohibition imposed in 1904.

The Sweet Potato is a small grocery store, not a health food store. This is part of what makes it so successful, as many health food stores are so packed with vitamins, smoothie mixes, and remedies of dubious effectiveness that they have no room for actual food. Not so with The Sweet Potato. There is an excellent selection of produce, dairy, cereal, grains, legumes, and baking products as well as small sections of personal care products, meat, and prepared food. I'm especially happy that I can get sheep's yogurt and milk here, as only a handful of places carry them.

The prices here are very reasonable for organic and natural food. The house-roasted coffee is excellent, and comes in a variety of blends.  The staff are friendly and helpful, and the hours are convenient. There have been a few times that they've been out of something I'm looking for, which isn't unusual when dealing with smaller suppliers. On the other hand, they usually have at least a few things on sale (Nature's Path Cereal for $1.99 and sheep's milk for $3.69 last time I was there). The surrounding neighbourhood is a haven of independent businesses selling natural and local food as well as the work of local artisans. No more Price Chopper at the Galleria Mall for me - I'm hopping on my bike for the 5
minute ride to The Sweet Potato.

I'm used to Fiesta Farms to big hill to climb. Sweet Potato meets most of my needs. Great range and fairly priced.

Their hummus, however, has no tahini and thats a severe deficiency. Oversight

I'm living in a Gluten Free world and the Sweet Potato is a great place to shop for groceries that I can eat.

They used to be the only location where I could find Bob's Red Mills Gluten Free All Purpose Flour.

There is now one other location in the Junction area (that I know of) that sells Bob's flour, but the Sweet Potato is the only store that carries a wide variety of other Bob's products for gluten free baking.

So Bob is the reason why I first begun to visit this store, but they're not the reason why I've stayed.

Every time I visit, I've found some new and exciting gluten free product that I'll want to try.  They currently have pizza/bagel dry mix sitting on their shelves that I'm eagerly looking forward to try.  I really miss having a bagel for breakfast.

They also gave back to me my love of waffles.  Nature's Path gluten free waffles taste just like Eggo's!  This might be a, "so what?" moment for those who do not worry about gluten in their diet, but up until the past few years - *anything* made gluten free was guaranteed to have a chalky taste and crumble like dust before the first bite.

Not fun, let me tell you.

But thanks to Nature's Path, and the Sweet Potato for selling their product, I don't have to worry about tasting chalk and tricking myself into thinking, "mmm, this is good!", because it really *is*.

So yes, I love the Sweet Potato, because they've helped me enjoy eating my favourite foods again.

I'm the type of person that loves to grocery shop in the first place, so when I heard the news that a new 'healthy' grocery store was opening in my neighbourhood, I was thrilled. The Sweet Potato makes grocery shopping a truly wonderful experience. The staff is patient and friendly and everyone in the store is actually in a good mood. People checking out at the cash were SMILING and THANKING the cashiers for providing such a great shopping experience for them.

I like that different organic produce is on sale each week, so if you're not familiar with the world of organics or don't want to drop a whole paycheque on fruit, you can slowly get used to it and see what you're missing.

Also, you really can't beat the hours - 8am-8pm every day!!

Fresh! Natural! Organic! And........cheap? Say wha? It's true. No more $8 tomatoes.

The Sweet Potato is a natural grocery store with no insane mark-ups. It's not a health food store trying to sell you magic potions or a cafe designed for single-sittings, it's a real grocery store....selling real (organic) food, from fresh fruit and veg to soups, diapers, tofu, organic deli meat, cereal, juice, baked goods, etc.

All that plus a take-away counter at the front offering smoothies, wraps, coffee, tea (plus a little comfy space to enjoy it) The Sweet Potato is the best place to buy your groceries if you live in the Junction....and maybe even worth the trip if you don't.

I will be the first to admit that I'm pretty easily impressed by little health food stores, but this grocery store has amazing selection at great prices.  They have all of the usual local, gluten-free, vegetarian/vegan brands. The Nature's Path cereal is well-priced at $3.99 a box and almond milk was on sale - two cartons for $5! They have a wide selection of organic teas, including Stash and a few other brands. They sell Kicking Horse coffee beans, and serve their own brewed coffee for $1.00. Organic produce seemed much cheaper than the usual grocery store. Apples were $1.29/pound. I noticed their organic frozen vegetables were also fairly cheap at $2.99 a bag. Frozen edamame was two bags for $5 - so many promos! They carry all of the usual frozen/packaged food brands like Amy's, Yves and Tofurkey. For you carnivores, they have a small selection of meat that is brought in from a local farm. They also have a huge selection of all-natural health and beauty and cleaning products.

    Very friendly staff.

I eat a ton of produce in a given week, so I don't usually buy it at the Sweet Potato (unless it's on sale, which happens frequently) because even though it's reasonably priced for local and/or organic and/or fair trade, it would add up a bit too quickly. However, it's usually my first stop when shopping for grains (multiple types of rice and rice blends, quinoa, millet, oats, barley etc.), natural cleaning products when vinegar just won't cut it, preservative-free breads, natural sweeteners (agave nectar and stevia), and vegan protein options (tempeh, all kinds of tofu, Tofurky and a bunch of Yves products). All of this stuff costs noticeably less than at comparable organic stores, and without any of the pretension.

The Sweet Potato also stocks a fair amount of delicious baked goods, ranging from dessert breads and cakes to individually wrapped organic muffins and bars, and there's also a fridge with a small selection of ready-to-eat salads, wraps and sandwiches for those days when you're in a rush or not in the mood to prepare something yourself.

Definitely beats the No Frills around the corner!
