This is my go-to takeout sushi place in Kits. I will usually order from here 2 times a month minimum. I have never dined in the restaurant, so have no opinion to offer in that area.
As always, I order the exact things I love and do not explore the full menu. Can recommend the scallop roll, bbq eel roll, real crab California roll and the assorted sashimi. The gomae is OK too.
There is a lot of competition in the sushi arena in Kits but Sushi Bar wins on quality at a specific price point. If you really want/expect higher calibre of food you may end up at Tojo's. I would love to hear about other reviewers' favourite mid-range sushi restaurants. -

checked this place out last weekend and it was really solid. i mean, nothing super-special or innovative (it's your typical sushi joint).
here's what i liked
- two can eat well for $15
- menu wasn't limiting to this vegan reviewer
- waitstaff did their jobs well & had hot tea on the table before i even had my coat off
those three things are about all it takes to make me happy! i will definitely return. -

I just discovered this place tonight. My boyfriend is out of town, and not around to make dinner. And I have an exam tomorrow. What's a girl to do... I tried eating a bag of chocolate buttons (and I mean like a proper sized bag, not the smaller "one serving" size stuff).... but instead of being less hungry, I felt slightly sick, slightly sugar high, and still wanting some meat. Raw fish? Yes please.
I am pretty sure the salmon in my appetizer nigiri thing was wild salmon. Dark red, fresh, delicious. Also got a gomae which was pretty good. I've paid a lot more for sushi that wasn't nearly as good. This is defs our new quick dinner spot. Much better than the place on 8th and burrard. Try it!
Not only do I feel better, but I also have managed to further procrastinate studying by coming on to write this! Yay!
BTW the menu is on urbanspoon: http://www.urbanspoon.... -

Have gotten take out vegan sushi from here before and it was really good. Decent price, large portion, totally stuffed for 2 people. (The veggie sushi platter)
My sister who is celiac also got some takeout here and really liked it and it's affordable.
We live just down the street so it's nice to have some good sushi so close to us and be a good price. We definitely will be coming back here. -

Went in here on a whim. The decent prices and cute little room drew me in.
The service was average, but the food was delectable.
The most memorable was the unique spicy tuna roll with wakame (seaweed) salad on top. The spicy/smooth sensation of the fish paired with the crunchy sweetness of the salad was surprisingly divine.
Another lovely surprise was the presence of tuna takaki nigiri - a new favorite of mine! The fish was butter-smooth, had a clear flavor, and was seared perfectly.
This should be your go-to sushi place on 4th, in Kits. -
Review from Jessie J.
Probably one of the most creative sushi joints in town. In addition to the regular menu, there's a whole separate two sided card, with at least 20 intriguing creations. In addition to the usual nori, there are rolls wrapped in soy paper, thin slices of fish, and cucumber. At least one of the special rolls is deep fried in tempura batter before being served. Many of them include fruit. And everything is available with brown or white rice.
The best part is, all this creativity is not an attempt to hide bad fish. A friend and I once reordered the toro sashimi even though we were full, because it was so good we couldn't not eat more. To my mind, this is THE best place to grab a bite before a movie at Fifth Avenue. But you might have a hard time saving room for popcorn... -

Jessie is right, it is a creative sushi joint. It was pretty fresh and tasty. Just the way I like 'em! I ordered the 18 pc combo for $6.50 which originally included a California Roll, yam roll, and tuna roll, but they let me substitute the yam roll (because I don't like yams) for an oshinko roll (Japanese pickles). I also ordered a "Jeffrey Roll" because I was feeling nostalgic and missed my friend Jeffrey who moved to Japan for a while, and also because I wasn't allergic to the ingredients. It had spicy miso tuna, with cucumber, in an inside out roll (like a california), and covered in crispy tempura batter. That was $4.95. The rice was pretty good too! The only thing I didn't like was the tempura batter... because it made it too fatty. And Jeffrey isn't fat by any means. Lol.. but really I was craving a fresher meal out of my sushi. But it was good otherwise.
The biggest annoyance I had (and albeit I did go at 3:30 while they were having their lunch) was that their service was not that great. I had to ask for a refill on my tea and they didn't come to offer it again. I had to yell my order to the chef because the girls didn't come to take it. They didn't offer me any other beverage. Basically, service was totally lacking. I hope they weren't expecting a huge tip.
Other than that, I would go back, maybe during a busier time so they're more attentive to customers rather than their gossip... because sushi was really good and I'd love to try some of their other cool rolls.Listed in: Reena M's Guide to Kitsilano

This place is so amazingly inexpensive, & all the more so considering it's on the west side of the city in Kits. I'm allergic to seafood however they have some beef & chicken bowls, that are a good size & under $6. I take many friends there that pleasantly surprised by both the good food & the great prices.
The only unfortunate part is that the servers are NOT friendly at all. No matter as there for the food anyways ;-) -

This review is only base on my first timer meal this evening. I love places that put a twist on the classic rolls. The prices are average and what I really liked is you can order brown rice and it doesn't cost more. This was my first experience having brown rice and I couldn't even taste the difference- yeah sushi seamingly just got even healthier!
The fish tasted fresh and portion sizes were good. I'd definitely come back to try a few more of the rolls. I've driven by this place so many times and was pleasantly surprised with my experience. -

I like Sushi Bar although I must admit that I frequent it often out of locale convenience and price (which still matter a great deal) than quality or service.
Boxes are your best bet although rolls are also really reasonably priced, especially if you get their daily roll specials listed on the whiteboard at the front. Like most sushi joints these days, Sushi Bar also carries the "crazy rolls" like spider and crunch etc. all starting at around $4.75.
What I like best about Sushi Bar is that you can get half orders of sashimi for very decent prices (4 pieces for $4.50). The salmon is a very dark and lovely red although a little on the firm side for my liking.
The less great part about Sushi Bar is the service. Don't get me wrong, they're plenty nice, but the several times I've gone in it's always felt like they're trying to rush you along and get you out asap although there is no one waiting for a table. It is typical to be asked 3-5 times whether you are ready to order in the first 2 minutes of being seated.
Other than that, Sushi Bar is indeed A-OK when it comes to your standard no frills sushi joints. -

Enjoyed a pleasant lunch here. Nothing exceptional however nothing negative either.
My Chirashi bowl was somewhat boring, pretty ordinary components. With so many sushi places in Vancouver, one must be pretty good to stand out in such a large crowd. -
Review from Dani B.
I like this place because they have awesome special's of the night (which change frequently) a menu dedicated to your traditional favorites, but they also have some unique rolls that are worth a try.
I got the grilled vegetable roll and was blown away by how good it was. The soy paper it was wrapped in didn't hold the food together as well as seaweed would, but overall I liked the soy paper better.
They also have brown rice as an option, which I really like. If you're craving some sushi and are on 4th and Burrard, I'd definitely hit up this place. -

Excellent sushi with creative and tasty rolls. The Jeffrey roll is an all time favorite.
The service in this place is terrible, but the quality and prices are worth it! -

Hope, BC
Cheap and tasty sushi was what I was looking for and what The Sushi Bar dishes up. A heaping plate of spicy tuna sashimi was a great value for $7.50, only place I've ever found a decent plate of this before was at a strip mall in Sherman Oaks, LA. The edamame was a bit weak (needed salt), miso good and tea kinda plain. We had one roll with crunchy crab that was a treat, unusual too. Found the place empty at first, and with a bunch of dirty tables (cleaned but not well), but it filled up later. Service seemed okay. They were quick to say hello and come by with tea.

Standard vancouver sushi. Not great. Not bad.

I've been to this place several times and it's always been good. I particularly like that it's handy to the Fifth Ave Cinema. They have a wide range of rolls, all of them are great. I especially like the eel & avocado. And then there's all the 'special' rolls like Thai, Dragon, Tropical - yummy. Most of all what I like is that you can get brown rice. I just wish they'd remind me when I order as I sometimes forget and by the time I remember it's too late as they've been pretty quick to make up the order. I wish there were more Japanese restaurants offering a choice of brown rice.

Aside from pretty mediocre sushi and fish that ain't exactly fresh, I really would appreciate if someone could explain what exactly is wrong with the owner? Could he be any ruder?Doesn't he realize his customers are what puts food on his table? Maybe he could be a little nicer when slamming down food down on my table? Plus I've had the odd bite of one of their "inventive" rolls with a piece of old smelly fish tucked neatly into place. For $10/lunch, you can do better.
