Saw Jeffry Combs last night as Edgar Allen Poe in his one man show called "nevermore". This show is fantastic. Mr. Combs fully inhabits  Mr. Poe.  His performance is riveting. So satisfying and well worth the admission price. This is not just a dramatic reading, this an evening with Poe, mr. Combs must be channeling him directly or something. You will  be on the edge of your seat the entire time. Double extra super terrific recommend!

    Where all the hipsters hang.

Thus far I've watched two shows here Reanimator & a magic show by Rob Zabrecky. Both shows were excellent and I would totally recommend them.

The venue is like a small auditorium with actual chairs for seats nothing fancy. The sound is not bad, but nothing mind blowing. This place is appropriate and functional for the type of art it represents, parking is also free.

Amazing tiny theater where every seat is awesome. Saw Janet Klein & her Parlor Boys from the front row... 6 feet away?? Theater showed hard to find, olde timey movie reels just before the concert and a nice selection of snacks to boot! We arrived early and walked around the corner to grab dinner with no less than 6 restaurant choices within the block. Oh yeah, parking lot for theater was free!!! Yes, Free parking in LA!!!

A great little theatre!  The generous folks over at the Steve Allen were gracious enough to let me and my surly little gang from Sacramento come down and show a film we made, and we couldn't have been happier about how everything turned out.

The venue is small, but theater style seating was great for showing a film (despite that this place is more suited to stage acting).  Not a bad seat in the house.  Great sound system too!

The staff was accommodating, the courtyard is perfect for relaxin', the parking lot is huge, and there are some cool Arthur Conan Doyle/Harry Houdini clippings strewn about the walls in back.

After the film showing was over the staff let folks mingle around and hang out in the front area for a while too.

Bummed I couldn't make it out to any of the "Reanimator: the Musical" showings!

LOVE this theater! A long time ago a friend and I happened to be at Skylight and we saw an ad for An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe for $10, one-man show. We figured great, we can't lose. The show was fantastic. Who doesn't love Edgar Allan Poe's short fiction and poetry? Especially when the man portraying Poe gets progressively drunker over of the course of the evening (which becomes, by the end, quite sad). It was so well acted and planned that they extended the show's run and raised the price (and rightfully so).

Since then I've seen a tribute to the late great Mitch Hedberg and Re-Animator! Mitch Hedberg's tribute had footage of Hedberg and sets by other comedians, which were amazing. Then a friend made the mistake of telling me that she wanted to see a musical for her birthday. I told her we could see Les Mis OR we could go see Re-Animator, sit in the front rows, and have blood splattered on us. She agreed to Re-Animator! and it was so much fun.

    Most fervently recommend.

I was looking for the Steve Allen theater and passed by it several times. I really should have looked at the picture on Yelp to see what it looked like, so I blame nobody but myself.
Still, my first visit here was for a live taping of Marc Maron's WTF podcast! It was a lot of fun, but the theater did get a little hot during the taping. I kind of wished they had turned the AC on. The staff was really nice and there were plenty of seats to choose from even though we showed up five minutes before the show started.
I will definitely try to visit again, whether it be for the podcast or another event.

What a great little theatre space! My friend is currently performing in Re-Animator the musical (which is awesome and a must-see, but that's another post altogether).

I actually drove past the place several times without remembering that it's part of the CFI and there's no real signage for the Steve Allen Theatre itself...certainly nothing that would be apparent when cruising on Hollywood trying not to piss off the drivers behind you. Once I got over that minor hump it was smooth sailing for the rest of the evening.

Parking is free, which is awesome and the gate stays open until 2 am, so you can even go grab a drink or quick bite to eat after the show without having to move your car.

As noted, the space is pretty small, so if you're picky about where you sit then get there early. Having said that though, I can't imagine that there's really a bad seat in the house. The staff were very nice and all in all it was a lovely night out...I plan on going back again.

I got see The Last Tomorrow with Ron Lynch! Amazing little theater, away from pretty much everything u know about Hollywood. I'm giving it 4 star because they really do need a better sign, but at least I know I wont be driving around lost again. Also, there seats are a little uncomfortable to be sitting for 2 + hours. But either way, its a super cool place to check out.

I had no idea that this place existed...

Thanks Yelpers for letting me know about the BYOB! Came here last week to see Akron/Family (http://www.akronfamily...) and did they rocked out! The theater reminded me a lot like a 70s/80s school. It could be because most of the patrons look like they're locals, recycling their pa and ma's clothes. You have the smokers outside looking cool. To the right you have the kitchen where they sell candy bars and soda pops. The bathrooms are down the hall in the back (there's only one hallway). The space where the bands play is intimate, and to be honest, the space was too small for the Akron/Family (psychedelic alternative rock music -best description) but perfect for smaller or quieter bands/musicians like the Hollywood Hotshots (a great band that plays 30s & 40s music) and the funny, awkward Charlene Yi.

I'm happy to discover this place. The Steve Allen Theater offers a bunch of not-your-norm events like "Cartoon Dump" and "Love Can Be Scary." They had "Kids in the Hall" here before... And if you're like me and wondering who the hell is Steve Allen? Here you go: http://en.wikipedia.or...

There's a parking lot (believe it's free), and if it's full you can find parking on Hollywood Blvd or take the subway to there.

On a recent business trip to Los Angeles, I was lucky enough to come across Ann Magnuson Does David Bowie on the Thin White Duke's 64th.

As you may or may not have wagered, I am vaguely obsessed with Bowie, have been for over a quarter-century, come to that.  I remember clear as a bell the day I saw Labyrinth in the theater.  I was barely six; my mom had a day off work and I bunked off school so we could have a girls' day of movies and shopping.  Up until that point my crushes had included Gonzo and Big Bird; I'd had a fleeting romance with Grover as well.  But when I saw Jareth the Goblin King up there, I completely melted.  Even though I'd had a well documented romantic history with Muppets, I barely even noticed Hoggle, Sir Didymus, Ludo, the Fireys, and such, because of that magnificent glam-fairy creature prancing about on screen.

My mother played her Let's Dance cassette till the tape tore.  My favorite track was "Cat People."  Years passed and eventually I had six pages of my CD storage book dedicated to nothing but Bowie albums.  As a high school freshman, a point at which I was still mooning over his soft beauty on the cover of Hunky Dory, I stayed overnight with my friend Tina, a fellow Bowie lover, and we watched The Hunger.  Yeah, sure, it's best known for its hot lesbian sex scene between Deneuve and Sarandon, but that opening sequence---starring Bowie and Magnuson---was the most striking, most erotic, most magnificent thing I'd ever seen.

So imagine my excitement when I found out that accomplished actress / performing artist / Bowie maker-outer with-er was going to be playing a Bowie tribute album on his birthday!  Well, I leaped about the office and squealed, I tell you.  (My coworkers already know about David and me.)  I was reminded of that line from of Montreal's song "Crazy Girl": "Before we got together, I even hooked up with one of your cousins, just to feel somehow closer to you because [...] it was thrilling to touch something that had touched you" and that's more or less how Ann Magnuson's show made me feel.

She changed the lyrics of "TVC 15" to "QVC 15" in honor of Iman.  I found the performance of "Cracked Actor" particularly germane because, hell, I was more or less in Hollywood.  So rad.  And Michael Des Barres was her special guest and they closed with a bloody Jobriath medley!  Holiest of holies, I was in heaven!

So, about the theater itself, they added a second Magnuson Bowie show on the next night to accommodate those who didn't get in to the sold-out 1/8/11 show.  I was, of course, leaving on a redeye that night and could only make the 1/8 show which, natch, was already sold out.  So I posted on the theater's facebook page and asked them if there was any chance at all they could squeeze in a North Carolinian and, minutes later, they replied to say they'd added twenty standing-room-only tickets.  Super awesome!

Tickets were $20 and, for what we got, that was a bargain and a half.  The acoustics are decent, too, and, although I was stood in the doorway between the main seating area and the lobby, I had no trouble seeing or hearing any of the show at all.  I'm not sure what other kinds of shows play here, but I can only imagine, based on this experience, that they are quirky and weird and brilliant.

I took a cab from downtown on the trip there (yes, being in LA on business unfortunately for me means no car, for which I'm a little grateful because, let's face it, driving in LA is a clusterfuck) and it was ~$25.  I was running late and thought it would be quicker, but it wasn't.  Boo.  I took the Metro red line back from the Sunset / Vermont station, which is only a block or two from the theater.  And the village of Los Feliz was lively enough that Saturday night for me to feel comfortable walking on my own.  For those of you (un)lucky bastards who do have your own wheels, the Steve Allen Theater has a private parking lot and plenty of parking on the street besides.

Where those in search of weird yet awesome comedy go for a good time.

I've been privileged to attend a couple of shows here- one Bruce McCulloch, apparently of Kids in the Hall fame (I wouldn't know).

Then for Harry Shearer's Holiday Singalong.

    Both times: sweet.
    Both times: cheap.

First time: Sara Silverman and various other (not so funny) guests showed up. They had the effect of making everyone (i.e. me) feel uncomfortable before the main act. When Bruce came out I was so relieved I didn't care that I had no clue who he was. He was great.

    Second time: Awwwwwwesome.
Save for the tranny singer with the big nose and creepy voice, everyone else was spectacular. The highlight of the evening came when the entire audience performed the Twelve Days of Christmas, led by the charming and hilarious Judith Owen (who, by the way, I'm pretty sure my boyfriend, and every other man there now has a secret crush on). As seemingly conservative people mimed giving blow jobs at the Eleven Pipers Piping bit, I was struck with one of the "ahhh" moments.

Ahhhh Steve Allen. You done good.

A small theater to watch great entertainment for cheeeap!

First off, finding the theater can be a problem since the sign can't be seen when driving from the east; so use street view before you know what building you are looking for.

We caught Kate Micucci here and wow was I impressed. She was great and the theater employees were always helpful. Its a small venue for less than a hundred people so you have a quaint experience.

Good: Small theater for an intimate experience for a cheap price.

    Bad: Hmmm...

Final: Cheap prices for some great entertainment.

Man...at first, I couldn't find this place...damn you mapquest!! HAHAHA! But yeah, the first time I went here, it was pretty damn cool! I went to watch KATE MICUCCI from "SCRUBS" perform with RIKI LINDHOM(sp?) along with their guitars, piano and ukelele!!! IT WAS AWESOME!

What was also funny was when I went to that show, I guess that was when there was that earthquake, which I kind of felt while Kate was singing.

    POSITIVES:
-Very well organized and clean venue.

-Chill and laid back! THE SEATS ARE SO COMFORTABLE!

    -Extremely intimate "concert halls".

    -Staff was awesome.

    -Restrooms were clean.

    NEGATIVES:
-nothing really bad to say, it's a super-intimate venue, which is pretty damn cool.

-Of course the drive sucks if you live pretty far, but it's in Hollywood, so you should have fun!

    FINAL THOUGHTS:
-If you haven't already, go check out a Kate Micucci and Riki live concert before they get even way more popular!  It is the same exact way I felt when I saw Maroon 5, Tech N9ne, Michelle Branch and others perform live before they got as famous as they got! Bottom line...their live shows kick ass...if you can put on an awesome LIVE SHOW, you are worth paying to see and support!

My dad, who was as Republican as a man could be, loved Steve Allen, and therefore I was always a bit suspicious of the man.  He just seemed like a rock and roll hating, hey you kids, get off my lawn kind of guy.  And thus, I was a bit skeptical of this whole Steve Allen Center for Inquiry there on Hollywood Blvd.   But as it turns out, Steve Allen was a big time secular humanist, and thus a pretty cool dude.

Very little of this has to do with the Steve Allen Theater, even though the first show I saw there was "Hollywood Hell House" which as you may know was a Rev. Jerry Falwell inspired haunted house replete with women dying from getting abortions and reading Harry Potter books.  I got to see David Thomas and Bill Maher play Satan there as well as Andy Richter and Ric Overton play Jesus (on different nights.)    The Hollywood Hell House thing was revamped a couple months ago in a West Hollywood Acapulco restaurant, but it just wasn't the same.

Since then, I've seen dozens of shows at the Steve Allen, which thankfully is about a mile or so away from my abode.  I got to see The Kids in The Hall reunite there, as well as some KITH solo things (including a very poignant and pathetic Kevin McDonald show about his scumbag alcoholic father.)  I've seen two benefit shows for totally non-famous ailing  comics with no health insurance headlined by big famous comics like Patton Oswalt and Sarah Silverman.  I've seen the cuter-than-fuck Janet Klein doing her Depression era ditties a whole bunch of times (always preceded by hilarious and politically questionable cartoons of the era.)    And, if I'm awake and sober enough to make it there on Saturday nighs at midnight, I've seen the Tomorrow Show a bunch of times.   And, it's now the home of The Girly Show, featuring my good friend Dave "Gruber" Allen as Todd Carlin (George's nephew).

Also, one Sunday morning, I woke up early enough to see a very animated Southern professor of biology give a lecture on the stupidity that is Intelligent Design.

They used to sell beer and stuff there, but now you can just bring your own and no one will stop you.

If I ever move away from my present location, I will greatly miss the Steve Allen.

I had the recent pleasure of visiting the Steve Allen theater for the first time - to witness the comedic genius that is Bruce McCulloch.  Kids in the Hall fans will know Bruce as Cabbage Head, among many other characters.

This show was a mere $10, included an opening comedian (whom I cannot remember name of, sorry), followed by an over-the-top skit by none other than Scott Thompson (also KITH), a stand up routine by Mary Lynn Rajskub (it was advertised as Janeane Garofalo but she no-showed) and then of course, the fabulous closer - Bruce M.

Bruce's routine was sort of a "stream of consciousness" type of thing, which I'm sure was well prepared, but came off as if it was right off the top of his head.  He would occassionally start galloping around in a circle, encouraging himself, "c'mon little pony, c'mon lil Brucy!".  Seriously, I laughed so hard, no exaggeration, that the next day my face actually hurt.

Jokes about his not-so-pleasant relationship with his father, jokes about being a dad, being married, being on a comedy show that went down in history but made him little money, skits like little stories strewn about - it was a brilliant show.

The theater was clean and small, easy parking, nice bathrooms, just a nice cozy little spot that made me feel like I was sitting on my couch at home with Bruce as my personal comedian.

I can't believe he mentioned that the LA Weekly tore his show apart.  Maybe the reviewer didn't "get it".  I am not sure - but for a Kids in the Hall fan, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and worth well-beyond the ten dollar cover charge.

Went and saw Nevermore here last night and had a great time. Tickets were only $10 which was unbelievable!  Less expensive than a movie, and definitely more entertaining.

The theater is small, holds maximum 70 seats.  The seats were comfortable, think padded reception area chairs and were very wide.  We were in the 5th row and probably were only about 15 feet from the stage.

The air conditioning worked very well, which was good, because I was worried about being too warm.

One bad thing, the floor is all level, so if you are short like me, there may be points where you can't see what's going on because of heads in your way.  Also, there was a cobweb on one of the spotlights that kept catching the corner of my eye and was distraciting.

Out back there was a large, free parking lot, which was terrific.

I definitely recommend this place, and if it looks like there is something interesting I would absolutely go back.

Came here last night for the last, sold out, extended for the 3rd time, Nevermore performance.  It is located abt 1 block west of Vermont, on the North side, directly across the street from my beloved Barnsdall Park.
They have a small parking lot so if it's full, seek a spot along the Blvd.
Upon arrival you notice a courtyard, great for meeting a group of friends, for smokers to take their last puff, and at times,  some form of art work on display.
People working here are a mix of staff and volunteers.  They are nice and accommodating.  The performance was sold out but they were generous in allowing desperate patrons to buy, at full fare, tickets for the performance without a seat.  That's right- you can stand along the wall for an hour and 45 minutes.  No seating on the floor and CASH only, although there is a display of MC, Visa and Discover on the window and no communication of Cash only.
My sister and I waited for 30 minutes on the waiting list and then, alas, finally granted a spot along the wall, only to be informed that our credit cards weren't good but we could go to Bank of America a block and a half away, try to make it back, but no guarantees on getting in...
My head was spinning... WTH (what the heck)!
So off we went, jogging in our 3+ heeled boots like lunatics down Hollywood Blvd and raced back gasping for air as we were told the performance had just started but to hang tight...
I won't go on with my irritations, and poorly managed extension of patrons they accommodated because ultimately, I got what I wanted, and ultimately, they wanted to accommodate.
The stage lighting , sound quality, cleanliness, comfort of chairs that we snagged the last 30 minutes, all were wonderful.  I was feeling a bit claustrophobic due to the lack of air and so many bodies but it was exciting to see so many people gather for theater.
Great theater bringing excellent directed work at an affordable ticket price.  If you get a chance, make sure you catch one of there shows!

Though this theater is relatively small, it often gives you a chance to see comedy masterminds in a laid back atmosphere which is good. I've seen TV's Frank and Joel Hodgson from Mystery Science 3000  in a number of shows and members of Kids in the Hall seem to be there every month and they are mystical, and its not every day that you see the funniest humans on earth up close to your face so that's good. You can also bring your own beer and drink that beer which is good because beer tastes great. And its in Los Feliz so you can walk to the Drawing Room afterwards and that place is molesty.

Just saw "Nevermore" tonight.  The theatre is actually very difficult to find (had no signs outside that says "The Steve Allen Theatre").  I ended up getting in 30 minutes late because I had to circle the area 3 times before I could find the little place.  But the show... the show was amazing.  Jeffrey Combs' performance was brilliant !! Although I also wondered throughout the show how on earth he memorized an hour and a half of lines... Anyways, I definitely recommend, worthy every penny and more.

Only been a few times so far but I like it this place! The theater is typical flat room-chairs style. Big but even if your back it's not bad. It's basically just a room inside the Center For Inquiry. Though I don't know much about CFI it's safe to say the individualistic aspects of it's atheism-driven mantra carry over to the stage. Judging from the acts I've seen & the shows that I've read about: anything goes. And I mean that in an arty way not a dirty way (though the Rudy Casoni show does have girls in pasties :) There's music, movies, mimes & more. I get the sense that anyone could do a show there if they just asked- it's that creative! The place is non-profit which is why I don't think their allowed to sell booze- but there are snacks & soda. And tickets are usually only $10. It's a neato joint that's reminiscent of a time when people said neato joint.

Here is a place where you can occasionally catch a rare appearance by the smart/funny Emo Philips.  That's enough for me.  And it's pretty close to a subway stop.

I am reviewing the Humans Are Such Easy Prey drive in series ONLY. My boyfriend and I went on Friday October 10th and had a blast! We got there super early and the nice guy working let us park in the best spot on the lot before they were even open! As we watched other cars arrive, they seemed to be directed to certain spots based on height/size of their car. The picture quality was excellent and the frequency we tuned into was clear! Be sure to go in and grab a 2 dollar popcorn! O also coke from mexico in the glass bottle. yum yum. If you are in the LA area with nothing to do on a fri night up until halloween, check it out! For 5 bucks a person, it's so worth it ;)

Wonderful little theater. The Hollywood Hotshots are a must see act. They play every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 8pm. Tickets are $10 each, which you can just purchase there. Plan to eat/drink beforehand, because other than a few snacks and coffee, the theater doesn't sell much.

do not stop....just go see "the beastly bombings," a super funny, very smart political satire/operetta. "the president" gets my vote for his incredible delivery and mad vocal skills. brilliantly written and directed, a must-see this last weekend of its run. keep an eye out off-broadway, this l.a. weekly pick for best musical theatre is sure to make a touchdown in the big apple.

Tomorrow with Ron Lynch is an insane, wonderful show every Saturday night at midnight. Music, booze, a wild audience and the craziest comedy you can see. Bars and clubs are way too crowded on Saturdays -- Tomorrow is the best bet! Only $5.
