So I've become a semi regular at this place since I'm doing a renovation on a house nearby. For starters, the service is great here. Waitress are very friendly and attentive. I usually have a coffee and the regular breakfast (2 eggs, bacon, hasbrowns, toast). I definitely enjoy it.
The hashbrowns are different in a good way. It's almost like they are mashed and then pan fried, almost like a broken potato pankcake. Very tasty. The bacon they serve is good, and it's hard to do wrong with eggs and bread.
Although i am a fan of this place, if you are looking outside of the basic breakfast options, be somewhat wary. For instance, the burgers are clearly from the freezer and I highly doubt they %100 beef.
If you stick to the basic breakfast options, you can't go wrong here. Also, if you are by yourself like I usually am, they will sometimes even bring a newspaper to your table. And I mean a real newspaper, not a Metro or 24. -

Since Bert closed on 12th avenue I have been looking for a new dinner where to have breakfast, see smiles, and enjoy a good cup of coffee.
This is not the place to find any of those.
Owner appears grumpy, coffee is on below mediocre side and the whole place could use some basic cleaning.
Keep looking and only enter here if you are a regular and habits take you there without thinking. -

We popped in to Slocan's for dinner after arriving in Vancouver from Austin, just looking for some quick bites. I was pleasantly surprised to end up with excellent service and a nostalgic meal. My husband had the spaghetti and meatballs (just like mom used to make -- big, fat noodles included!), I had the monte cristo with fries. The fries were excellent, and reminded me of fries I used to eat when I was a kid (as in, real potatoes). The monte cristo was unlike any I'd had before, but was good.
The waitress was very nice, and attentive. Overall, we'd gladly be back for another diner-type meal, or breakfast. -

This place used to be great until the new owners took over.
Enough said. -

Another cheap breakfast joint...
Have you ever had hamburger for breakfast? I haven't and wanted to try it. Hamburger, eggs, hash browns and toast all for about $6. Not bad.. Greasy, well seasoned and big portions.
This place doesn't get as busy as other breakfast places so no line ups are a bonus. A great little neighborhood place that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Definitely not a date restaurant but a perfect place to take grandma! :) -

I tried this place out for the first time about 2 months ago. I had just moved and my mom was helping me out. We decided to grab some food here because we were starving.
The first thing I noticed walking in was that it was crammed. A good sign. The wait was only about 2 minutes and we were seated at a nice booth near the cash register.
I'm pretty sure every single person in there was a regular. I got that kind of vibe. It seemed like a really friendly place. The owner (I think?) was walking around and talking to some of the customers whenever he had a free moment and seemed to recognize all of them. Anytime a person with kids went up to pay he'd let them take a lollipop from a big bucket under the counter. So cute!
I ordered breakfast. My scrambled eggs with cheese were delicious (and I'm picky about eggs!), the hashbrowns were REAL POTATOES. Can you believe that? NOT FROZEN SHAVINGS! And they tasted SO GOOD. Very well seasoned and not too salty.
The prices were excellent and I'm pretty sure my meal was under $6! Bonus. I was so stuffed when I was finished that I could barely move.
The service was very quick and everyone was really polite. Will definitely have to go back...Listed in: Favourites, BRUNCH

If a restaurant can be judged by the number of cops who eat there, Slocan is one of the best. Unfortunately, it would seem that police have less compunction about eating trashy food than they do about tazering people, and the food at Slocan does not stand out as particularly good.
It's very generic, making typical diner dishes like spaghetti and meat sauce, big barons of beef, and anyway-you-want-it breakfasts. The food is cheap though, with "everyday of the week" specials that all come with free Jello at the end. And most of the roadside diner rules are upheld, like bottomless coffee, and milkshakes that are served with the metal canister they were made in. Oh, and the servers are all nice older ladies who use terms of endearment like "hun" and "dear".
Not such a bad place, if you just want to sit in a booth, relax, and eat food that makes you sweat. -

The Slocan has been around for as long as I can remember, but only the other day did I finally get a chance to try it out. It's an old-fashioned, bit-of-everything kind of place, where, as my sister says, you can take your grandma for a nice lunch or have yourself a real hearty hangover breakfast.
I don't suppose there's much to say about bacon and eggs and coffee, which is what I had, except to say that it was a huge portion that I struggled to finish. Cleaning your plate would be thing to do here; there's starving kids out there, you know. Mom? The hash browns were the old fashioned kind - fried mashed potatoes, crispy on the outside. My husband went into sugar overload with his chocolate shake.
And since the place is licensed, my sister and her friends started the day off right with a round of tall Caesars to go alongside their coffees.
They definitely cover all tastes here, and I don't know if there are still many restaurants around where you still get Jello for dessert, as you can with one of the Slocan's many daily specials. Yep. Roll in and fill up, and if you don't expect fancy, you'll fit in just fine.Listed in: Diners

Yummy, chunky, golden, crispy French Fries that stand out like the ones in your childhood memories at the ice rink.
I don't know if the place just looks better in the Winter or they cleaned it up a bit, but suddenly it had an appeal today. With comfy booths and flat screen TV's showing snow board racing. There was a good vibe and It was all warm in there. The service is always so darn nice too.
We browsed the menu for future reference. I really need to try a full dinner or a breaky here. The prices are amazing! and they have everything you could really want. Lunches for under 10 bucks, most dinners for under 14.
My Fries were less than a glass of Coke! Where else does that happen?!Listed in: Come on over to the VEV !

Review from Jordan H.
Great little diner. Eight of us walked up here one saturday morning for breakfast, but we all ended up ordering the Super Burger. You can get it with fries, onion rings, potato salad, or hashbrowns. We were all surprised at how good it was.
They've got beer on tap and one of us ordered a caesar which came out decent as well.
The menu is extensive and they serve breakfast all day. I'll be back for sure. -

Really basic. Really not fancy. The four stars are for the service and yes, the ambience. The servers all seem happy and it has a big time family owned vibe (I think it very well may be). Plenty of regulars and the price is alllllll right. Good deal for cheap eats.

Okay food but horrible staff. I complained about some food and the owner came out with a pompous arrogant attitude. Very rude man and should not be in the customer service industry.
Will not attend again!!!!! -

I'd give this a 3.5 stars. This place can be a little hit and miss sometimes. They seemed to have cleared out all the crappy servers so that is a HUGE plus. I had stopped coming here for about a year because the service was so bad (repeatedly), but missed the beef barley soup too much. The soups are all homemade and change daily (on the same rotation for the week though). Fries are AWESOME. The Greek selections are delish too. Overall, it's a great little diner for 'home cooked' comfort style food. If you order the daily specials, it comes with a soup or salad and a dessert of jello or pudding! JELLO PEOPLE!!
