Most memorable part of this bar? Their beer menu. Ask for it, you'll want to take a photo of it. It's a wooden board with all the bottle caps of the beers they serve. Bloody brilliant.
Typical gastropub fare, cool, young crowd. Oh I forgot, there's a tree that grows through the roof of their patio. -

My boyfriend and I went into this place last weekend for (what we were hoping to be) a quick lunch before we headed up to check out UBC (we're not from the city). There were 2 people working the entire restaurant on a sunny, sunday afternoon - the cook, and one overwhelmed, seemingly inexperienced server. We sat down, ordered some drinks/food, and the waiting began.......
about 30 minutes later... as we sipped on our water (might I add that after wondering why mine tasted a little weird, i realized there was a piece of garlic in the bottom of the glass) we wondered what the hell was taking our food so long. then we began to notice the others being served, returning their food, getting a new dish, returning that, switching plates amongst tables, and also overheard the 'cook' telling the server that he ran out of lettuce and tomatoes! it was then that we realized it would probably be a while before we were served. My boyfriend (who is the nicest person and avoids confrontation at all costs) went up to the bar to ask the bar tender if he could give us a time estimate on our food. i can't blame the guy for being stressed considering he was the only one working, however, he didn't even apologize for the wait.. just said "it'll be ready in 2 SECONDS!"
......15 minutes later is when i lost my cool after seeing a table of 2 that arrived AFTER us receive their food before us. My boyfriend paid for his beer (6.50 for a bottle of Keiths), we left, and we will never return.
I get it, you're in the midst of a changeover, but get your shit together or stay closed until the "changeover" is complete! -

The menu was mediocre but they are in the midst of a big changeover. That said, their avocado/almond salad is 2 die 4. The wings were not bad.
My husband and I were there on a Wednesday night and it was semi-busy. A group of 8 shaggy-haired university types were at one table and a few other tables were occupied by twos. We walked in and were immediately greeted by an unseen voice that genuinely sounded happy to see us. Shiny happy perky server # 435 bounced over to show us to our table. She explained the specials, brought us water and menus, gave us a few minutes to look at them, and then came back to take our order. Drinks/water were served/topped up consistently, and when we ordered we mentioned we were going to share the salad. It arrived in 2 separate bowls. Nice touch!! Didn't have to ask for that. Many places I have been would sneer at the mere asking of a second fork to share the first course.
Shiny happy perky server # 477 also flitted over a few times to make sure we were taken care of. Now some of you might be thinking: "That is what they are supposed to be doing. Why does this merit any mention?" Unless you're a recent visitor to this city, most people know that the the restaurant industry in Vancouver is infested with less than mediocre standards of service. (See my past reviews.) This time I am actually raving about a place that is DOING WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD BE DOING!!!
Eating establishments insists we pay an extra 15 - 20% tip on top of the final bill. And for what???????? The privilege of listening to one waiter's deep depression? Snotty service because "I am very busy"? (Again see my past reviews.) I am always amazed that we as a society feel okay with subsidizing some people's salaries in tip form while others are juggling their 3 jobs at 7-Eleven, Petro-Can, and Wal-Mart. But I digress. Go to The Shack. Have the Avocado/Almond Salad, order some wings, and feel good about leaving a tip. -

Went there yesterday after a volleyball game. Monday 10$ burger and beer, can't go wrong with that. Awesome thing was the waiter allowed us to get pitchers instead of separate beers... don't know if that made a difference. Now that I think about it, it wouldn't make a difference. Burger was pretty good, a lot of bun and I had the fries. It didn't look like a lot of fries because it was spread out under the burger but I wasn't able to eat it all so it was decent.
We also had the nachos with pulled pork (I'm not a fan but someone else ordered it). Again, the plate of nachos didn't seem that big but it was shared among 5 people, and everyone seemed happy.
Great place for people watching... although they do not give peanuts to throw at them which would be nice. -

1. The Shack
The most unlikely pick up place for a single gal - oh and they serve burgers too. Picture the Roxy sans the 90s classic rock soundtrack and overly made-up pre-Madonna's. UBC rugby players, hockey lovers, and the general down-to-Earth Kits crowd congregates to this posh dive bar to watch sports, eat Kobe beef burgers and drink draft beer. The prices are reasonable and the staff is as friendly as the patrons. Plus it's one of the only places that serves mango flavoured vodka (with soda it's to die for)! However, be warned: there is no such thing as going to the Shack for "one drink."

I'm a big fan of pubs. Having that said, I walked into the Shack on a Monday afternoon because I was drawn in on their Monday's special sign: "Beer and Burger for $10"...isn't that enough to draw in anyone?
Even though I had already decided to do the $10 Beer and Burger deal, I decided to peruse their menu and see what else there is. Menu isn't big, mostly burgers, sandwiches...the basic pub food. As my eyes skimmed down the appetizer picks, I found YAM FRIES (A good size serving for $8). The $10 deal I ordered included fries, so I quickly asked if I could substitute my fries for yam fries (extra $2).
Service was quick, I got my beer (I believe it was around a pint, or less) and there was a generous serving of yam fries sitting next to my burger. One thing I slightly disliked was the bun they used for the burger, it's not your regular burger bun...not sure what kind of bread it is.
But the yam fries...
YES! I absolutely love their yam fries! I would definitely go back to the Shack whenever I crave for yam fries....not to mention, go back and try one of their other weekly specials. The yam fries were just thick and firm enough to hold a decent amount of yam meat, but not so fat that you would mistake it for Japanese yam tempura. Not too much batter, and was fresh!
For yam fries, this is the best, cheapest, most economical in Vancouver I've eaten so far!Listed in: Yam Fries Quest

Definitely my worst bar experience in Vancouver so far. If I could give this place a negative rating, I would.
After arriving as a larger group on Friday evening, we were rudely pushed around by the servers, and continually told to sit down at a table. However, at 12:30 on a Friday night, not only were they serving drinks directly from the bar, they were charging a pretty penny for them.
None of our interactions were friendly, and especially considering the quantity of drinks bought, I think they could have been a bit more courteous.
For a later night trip to the bar, any of the other places along broadway will suit you much better. -

I absolutely LOVE the Shack!
The coppertank is on the same block as the Shack, but the coppertank's last call is at 12:30 and they close at 1!!!! The Shack is open till 2 am! WOOT
The Shack has pretty good food, great drink specials every night of the week, and is a great place to socialize! Everyone that works there is super friendly and nice! They also have a patio, which is a GREAT for those hot summer days, when you want to sit and relax with a nice cold beer or spritizer.... or $17~ pitcher of Sangria! !! The Shack is owned by the same people that own Lola's Bar further down Broadway, meaning they all know how to have a great time! -

If a hassle-free summer evening of sipping spiked bevvies on a patio is on your agenda, this place delivers. The drinks are strong enough you can taste there's booze in it (unlike some places where the alcohol content is questionable) yet smooth enough to go down nice and easy.
The burning coils hanging from the roof on the patio to scare away the bugs will randomly drop burning ash onto your head (beware), and the bartender seems disinclined to attempt a new drink, no matter how nicely you request it. Shame. -

A great place to watch the game!
We hit up The Shack on Friday with 6 other friends to casually watch the Canucks battle it out - The Shack was busy, but very accommodating for our group of 8! They have great food, good service and is a nice low-key place to grab a drink.
I'd describe this place as a trendy neighbourhood sports bar (and know it's a favourite watering hole of the local rugby teams on Saturday afternoon/evenings), with a welcoming confortable atmosphere - even to the not-so-sports savvy feminista. They serve everything from burgers, yummie yam fries, and an assortment of on-tap beers, to salads, great chicken wraps and to-die for veggie pizzas. And it's not too expensive (about $10-$15 entrées - if you call pizza an entree) which is great for a casual Thursday/Friday night game.
Great place to grab a drink and enjoy some on-screen sporting activities! -

I love to have more weekend brunch options in Kits! The Shack also has an NFL Sunday Ticket, so football fans should be aware.
Breakfast was good, if on the pricey side. The breakfast bowl with chorizo and eggs was a delightful combo, and it had a little bit of spice, which was nice. But for $12 it wasn't a huge meal. For a girl, maybe, but my football watching guy friends were still hungry!
The service was friendly. We were there for a few hours for the game and we got a free round of beer which is always welcome!!
It's a pretty small place, maybe a dozen tables, and a great place to watch sports. They owners are young people and the place has a pretty hip vibe. I'd like to check it out after dark! -

A good addition to kitsilano. Its a small bar and is usually packed by australians who know how to party. They have good service and a good beer menu. They're open till 2am which is also a big plus. In the summer you can sit on their patio which is good for people watching

The Shack Eatery in Kitsilano has very recently taken over Ouzeri, which explains why you may not be able to find much info about it just yet! Nevertheless, this snazzy little joint offers tasty drinks and eats, including calamari, asian chicken lettuce wraps, pizza and burgers. My friend and I sat up at the bar here and were delighted to have a bartender who didn't force us to move to another table...girls, you know what I'm talking about! Our lovely bartender Ryan was pleasant and talkative and he even messaged me on Yelp to know when I would be putting my review up! Food and drink can only go so far, but a fantastic staff is the key to an enjoyable time!

Came here with some friends to watch the Canucks game. Good place to watch a game and decent drink specials. Food was typical bar food and pretty average not great but not horrible either. Soup tasted like it came from a can. I would go back again for a game.
