If it wasn't for Yelp I probably wouldn't have wandered into this little gem! My colleague and I were looking for a place to fill our bellies up after a long morning of travel. Sequel Cafe offered the perfect combination of light fare and bistro style comfort food, and was within walking distance of our hotel. I ordered the quiche with a side of spinach salad and potatoes. Everything was delicious! If anything were to grab my attention on a plate it would be something with potatoes or eggs. This time around I was so engrossed in my spinach salad that I almost forgot about the starchy goodness on the other half of my plate. Was it the orange juice dressing? The toasted almonds and the... feta? Whatever it was put me in food euphoria with a spinach salad of all things. Amazing.
They explained the ordering process, the history of the cafe, and answered all of our questions about the food. I loved the magnetic letters on the menu board, and the eclectic concert posters plastered on the base of the counter. I am so glad I was able to try this place because it exceeded my already high expectations, and left me with a satisfyingly full, yet not too heavy, belly. -

The Sequel Cafe lives up to the (Yelp) hype. Prices are reasonable and all of the food is made with high quality ingredients. Their soups are entirely home made rotate on a daily basis and are always vegetarian - no chicken stock at all.
The menu consists of sandwiches, soups, and hot entrees. Sandwiches are made to order to your liking on hearty, thinly sliced white bread. Their roast beef sandwich is made with real roast beef. Sandwiches are decently priced at $6.50. They aren't particularly large, but you can add a large, hearty bowl of soup for $4. I had the mulligatawny, which had just the right amount of curry flavor.
I look forward to returning and trying one of their hot entrees, which cost anywhere from $10 to $12.50 but always include potatoes and a salad.
And while the Sequel Cafe is a cash only establishment, service is very friendly and accommodating. Make sure to arrive early, as tables fill up. -

Don't wait, go now! This place is without a doubt my new favourite, I can't say enough good things. You can taste the fresh homemade goodness in the food, and the service is phenomenal. They really love what they do here. Fantastic. Be sure to try their incredible caesar salad - you've never had one this good!

Thanks to fellow Yelpers, I checked out this cafe today for lunch. Yummay for sure. Stellar customer service as well.
The super high ceilings fascinated me, perhaps because I may myself never pass the 5 feet mark. lol. Like my fellow Yelper, Aditya, said, it is perfect for people watching during the lunch break. I perched myself along the counter and had a perfect albeit partial view of Churchill Square. They also have cute little tables as well. The walls had this lovely shade of blue as well as my favorite color, purple. The purple was vibrant and breathtaking. It was an awesome surprise. I feel purple is underused in our world.
I had a Greek salad and these spicy potatoes, which are not on the menu, but I had seen them in a Yelp pic, and as soon as I asked about them, no problem. I saw the Greek salad was priced at $7.75 indicating this would be a large salad. I really wanted both though, so I asked if there was a problem to get a smaller sized salad, and not a problem at all for them. For a half-size salad and the potatoes, I paid a mere $7.75. The portions were generous, and I ended up having to have the potatoes packed up to go. No way was I leaving them. These potatoes were cooked perfectly and seasoned so well. I am in love with the potatoes. My salad and potatoes were served in a deep bowl with a grassy green color, another great color. Going back to the menu for a moment, very original, colourful, and unique. Check out the picture posted.
The two ladies that served me were extremely friendly, well groomed, and pleasant. After I had placed my order and found a great place to sit and observe the passing peeps, one of the girls brought me a glass of water. How nice! I certainly don't expect this type of service at a place I pay less than $10 for a super yummy lunch, but I won't say no to it. I should have gotten their names; they were just so upbeat and kind. I will definitely be returning, especially as it is just a block away from work and very affordable.
Just a note, there are stairs involved; it is not wheelchair accessible. Also, they only accept cash, which is good to know ahead of time. Since I work downtown and am often asked for cash (I support the Have a Heart-Give Smart campaign, so I don't give out cash), I have taken to using my debit card 99 percent of the time. However, it isn't like there aren't a ton of ATMs in walking distance. -

I don't like going into a new cafe/restaurant/shop/whatever with high expectations because I'm usually disappointed. So not the case with The Sequel Cafe.
A small part of me wants to knock a star off for their lack of signage (it was definitely tricky to find) and the fact that they're cash-only. But I just can't.
The food and the service here are just too awesome. My caesar salad was outstanding. My fellow yelpers were lamenting something or other...house prices? The global economy? I have no idea, because I was so engrossed in my salad.
The owners here (Shyla and....Dave? Or Dale?) are super nice. The service was quick and friendly. I couldn't have been more impressed.
I'm looking forward to making The Sequel Cafe a weekly appointment in my calendar!Listed in: Five Star Favourites, Lunch Break, Cups of Coffee, Downtown Dining

Whoa whoa whoa - hold the phone! Do we have a new contender for my new favourite lunch spot downtown?! I think we do!
I've often walked by the little sandwich board sign outside the First National Bank building on my way to the library; the black one with multi-coloured words that look like those magnets you put on the fridge as a kid. Then, earlier this week, the place came up in conversation with another downtown friend, and he had nothing but good things to say about it. It is owned by the same people who used to own a place called Whole in the Wall Cafe that closed a few years ago. I had a lunch date with my aunt this week, so I figured it was the perfect opportunity to check them out.
Go to where the sandwich board is to get to the cafe. You'll go up a couple of stairs and there it is! The space is actually a lot bigger and airier than I expected it to be - nice. There are five or six tall tables there. It wasn't full, so we got a table right away. The menu is above the counter, again in those cute fridge magnet-y letters. There were about four soup choices (all vegetarian), some sandwiches, salads, and the hot plates. Today there was a sirloin quesedilla, ravioli, vegetarian burrito, a quiche, a calzone, and a couple of other things. They all come with salad, or salad and potatoes. I had the quesedilla ($12) and my aunt had the burrito (I think $10.50 or $11). Both of our dishes were delicious, light and filling.
The people that work here are the kind of people I love. So nice, so friendly, and obviously care about the people that come to the business they so clearly love.
I have an hour for lunch. We were done our meals within about 35 minutes and just chilled the rest of the time. It's important for me, if I'm going to spend my hard earned dollars at lunchtime rather than bringing from home, not to feel rushed and wait around forever for the food.
I probably normally wouldn't rave above a place so openly after only going there once, but I could really feel it with this place, you know? Great food, great people, and really convenient for the downtown lunch crowd. I already have two more lunch dates set up to go here - can't wait!

UPDATE! May 10, 2011 - I've been meaning to update this review for a while! Since I wrote my first review, I've been to The Sequel a dozen more times and I love it more than I did at first! There is now a tie for my favourite meal there - the veggie burrito or the calzone! Shyla, Dale and Brian are super great, friendly, remember your likes and dislikes, etc., and the food is always delish!Listed in: My downtown

Sequel is a completely adorable cafe that serves a modern, almost Californian menu of lunch options. From delicious sounding unheard of stuff like cream of cauliflower soup, to sausage calzones, veggie burritos and a lot more!
The reasons for 5 stars are so many! Let's start with the basics. There's something to be said about a high ceilinged airy room, perched at a good height above 102nd avenue. It's nearly perfect for people watching during the lunch break and gives a busy, city-like feel to your break. The interiors of the cafe are all blue and slightly artsy, yet not losing the essence of homeliness that this place has. Sequel is pretty much managed by 3 people who are capable of making any of the 15 items on their menu. It seems like the people who run the cafe also own it.
I had the veggie burrito while looking at other orders all over the cafe during a busy afternoon. Everything looked well presented, inviting and of good lunch hour proportions. The veggie burrito was a delicious pressed wrap of refried beans, corn and other sundries in a tortilla, with a humungous serving of salsa and cream on the side. Also, with the order came a side salad and another side of spiced potatoes. Those potatoes had a mild, yet awesome taste to them and really complemented my lunch greatly. The salad was also very tasty, mainly consisting of baby spinach, nuts and an oil-based dressing with some feta cheese. Delicious!
Unique salad, unique burrito, unique potatoes. Nothing fancy, in fact I'd go ahead and say that it was very simple in ingredients, but made extremely well. I have no clue how they make their salsa, but it was nice and smooth, not chunky. The other awesome thing is that the price of food here is quite reasonable. My order was among the more expensive ones and costed $12.50. For someone looking for simple sandwich, soup or just a salad, be sure - it'll cost you less than $10.
The staff were friendly and the lady at the counter addressed me as "gentleman" while talking to the other lady at the back, which obviously triggered a couple of exchanges because I've never been called a "gentleman" before :-D. Midway through the meal (must note: not after the "first bites"), the guy who was probably responsible for making the lunch came out and checked with us if all was fine. Indeed a kind gesture, given the lunch hour traffic this place gets.
Yes, 5 star food, 5 star service, 5 star ambience.Listed in: On Edmonton's LRT, Green massacre, Love at first sight

I think Sequel (CASH ONLY!) is now at the top of my list for downtown lunch destinations. It is located in the building kitty-corner to Churchill Square, with just a little sign out front on the sidewalk to let you know it's there. There's a couple stairs up, into a neat little space overlooking 102 ave. It'll be great for people watching in the summer.
I've stopped by a couple times now, and it's not too busy, even right at lunch time. It seems like a reasonable place to go alone too. I spent some time working on my laptop after lunch one day, and the staff were good about keeping my coffee cup filled.
The food here is good and fast, and they do take-out as well. Everything I've eaten here has been good, and while not super cheap, I felt I was getting good value for my money. And their carrot ginger soup rocked my world. I could eat that every day. Plus the staff are super friendly.
This place seems like it will please both foodies and picky eaters alike. -

I agree with my fellow Yelpers; The Sequel Cafe is a great place for lunch! After reading about this place in a local paper, I decided to check it out. I work in the downtown "core", so I'm always excited to visit a new, reasonably-priced place for a quick, nutritious lunch.
I used to frequent this cafe a few years ago when another owner ran it. I think it was primarily a tea store but it eventually closed its doors. I've seen the same owner at the City Centre Market selling her teas. I believe that Three Bananas also sells her tea, as I often purchase her Vitalitea from there. It's good to know that she's still around!
This place isn't wheechair accessible, and the stairs are fairly steep. But I promise that it's worth the adventure!
Since my fellow Yelpers have already described the cozy, sunny ambiance, I will stick to describing the food.
I was greeted warmly by the lady at the counter, which made me feel very welcome. The hospitality here is superb. Makes you want to linger over your tea!
Anyway, I've only been here 3 times (for takeout), but I fully intent to visit here this winter, where I can escape my co-workers and my dark, windowless office. I've had the borscht and the lentil curry soup. Both are hearty and chockful of veggies, I particularly liked the borscht! The take-out containers are huge; 16 oz cups! Both soups are very satisfying and left me very full. At $5 per 16 oz. container, how can you go wrong?
I'm also a fan of their caesat salad, although I was suprised by the lack of bacon. The dressing it addictive, I couldn't stop eating my Caesar until it was gone. Highly recommended.
Oh, my son also likes their chocolate chip cookies. Another item I must try soon.
Check it out soon! -

Really cool hole-in-the-wall mom and pop kind of place. Sandwiches, soup, light entrees, coffee/tea - it's all here, and at reasonable prices. The owners are so friendly it is adorable. Colourful signage and menu board using those old plastic magnetic letters I used toplay with as a kid. Colourful walls and very artistic atmosphere - it almost seems like a set from a play. I only had an iced tea and it was lovely - I will try to head back here soon to try some food.
