As a huge fan of the old Sausage King and their amazing pepperettes, I was a little dubious of a new owner coming in, but once I found out that newbie was Olliffe butcher - well it was like winning the Meat Superbowl.
The pepperettes aren't just as good as the former king's, they are better. Spicier and slightly more cured than their predecessor, they are an explosion of awesome in your mouth. And don't let me forget about the sandwiches. Having worked in the St. Lawrence Market area for some time, I'm not such a huge fan of the lunch time offerings available there - but now that there is a new kid on the block I've stopped making faces when my colleagues suggest the market.
I've had the Porchetta all dressed w/ crackling and before y'all get up in arms YES they do have crackling, but since it takes 40hrs to make you have to know when to go (Wednesdays/Thursdays), and it was super tasty. BBQ Beef Brisket was also good, but almost just a little too much for one human to nosh without consequence.
But the shining star for me is the deli sandwich, specifically the Bierschinken - a German Mortadella style cold cut. Sausage King by Olliffe also has nitrate free hot dogs and their famous sausage available during lunch as well as a whole plethora of meaty goodness you can take home and cook yourself. -

If it looks like a pig and eats like a pig, it's probably me.
Since the weather was near-perfect this week, I decided to walk over to the market for lunch with nothing but Portuguese chicken in mind. Unfortunately, I wasn't the only slob who had this idea as the line at Churrasco of St Lawrence was massive. So, when I spotted the menu at The Sausage King, I decided to hop out of line and grab either a porchetta and BBQ beef sandwich.
Spoiler alert: I grabbed one of each because I have no self-control.
The meat counter itself looked fantastic, showcasing some bad-ass butchering skills - the French-cut pork chops looked unbelievably good - and the staff were very friendly as well.
As for the sammies, the porchetta was a clear-winner in my book, even without crackling. It was only dressed with mayo and hot peppers so the meat was properly showcased, though next time I think I'd skip the mayo and the beef, though good, isn't actually BBQ'd, it's slow-cooked so the meat is buttery tender, but it was really heavily dressed, so I'll just have to go back and try again.
For a normal human, a single sandwich should be enough as they're served on a large kaiser and chock-full-o-goodness. Read: lots to eat for $6.75 tax in.
Will eat again. -

SAUSAGE FEST!
The Sausage King is in the St Lawrence market. Although it's been there a few years, it was just very recently taken over by OLLIFFE butchers (look for the new swanky sign!) and now has some gluten and filler-free handmade sausages, as well as traditionally raised pork, beef and poultry. They also have sandwiches, salads and other prepared foods.
They don't have as good of a selection as the sausage place in the south market, but Sausage King is in the north market so open daily rather than only Saturdays, so it's your new best bet for sausages Sunday-Friday. -

Since the new owners from Olliff took over:
The stall looks good, has a higher end feel to it and I think is more expensive. The good news is that most of the same sausage recipes are offered - including the peprettes -yay!
The porchetta sandwich - it's good. Not great. Texture is like a finely shredded pulled pork and there was no crackling (boo). An unnecessarily liberal dousing of fennel competes a bit too much with the natural pork flavor and sweetness from shining through. The tenderness of the meat is quite succulent and outstanding.
I don't think they should have shredded/pulled the porchetta, the texture doesn't work. A sliced meat would be the better way to go (or hunks of meat like at porchetta & co.... Which , btw, is way, way better).
Still good value at 5.99 a pop and still a really good sandwich. Worth it.
I opted for mustard and hot banana peppers to cut the richness of the meat and to add a little kick, it was a good option. -

I love Sausage. I frequent the Sausage King.
I buy Sausage nowhere else when in Toronto.
My favorites. The chorizo, macedonian, and the breakfast sausages. I have not tried all of them, but I am excited to eventually try them. -

Ark and his crew serve up an amazing variety of quality sausages. Everything from hot italian, bratwurst, chorizo and honey garlic. There's also some exotic flavours from time to time. His selection of deli meats is also impressive. Fantastic bacon. The hot counter offers some amazing sandwiches and of course his signature sausages on a bun. (Great value for your buck)
