Not just for kids and not just for adults!

The Sassy Bead has a pretty sweet name and a pretty cool business model.  Sure, you can do this at other stores but it was one of the first and few places in Ottawa where you can make an afternoon of making homemade jewelry.

A girl friend demanded we stop in at this place not long ago and I rolled my eyes at first but in the end it was a good bonding experience and I realized I have zero patience for such tasks as jewelry making and babysitting.  There were a lot of kids mulling around the store for a birthday party so I was in a hurry to get the necklace done and get the heck out of there!

For kids this place is fun as there are so many options and ways the kids can express their creativity.

Adults will find some neat stuff in this store too.  The prices are really low.  At least that's what I thought.  I've never purchased jewelry before nor had I ever made anything like this before.

In the end one of my best friends left me with a neat keepsake from a day in which I cursed a few too many kids under my breath.  What? They were much more creative and talented than me with the seashells and other beads!  Back in my day kids made macaroni necklaces with fishing line for their parents.

My mom would take me here all the time as a kid. I would make bracelets and braid hair with beads and this was one of my favourite stores. I was just here a few weeks ago and it hasn't changed much since. They still offer a wide selection of beads - more than you can imagine. They have so many different kinds of beads, with different shapes, sizes, and made of different materials, including wood, plastic, metal, glass, and stone. Their selection is so wide that I've spent at least an hour in here just looking around! Some of the prices can be a bit high, but it is a specialty store.

They also have jewelry for sale, as well as an area with tables and chairs for the classes they offer. These classes range from jewelry making and wiring, to beading, stitching, and weaving.

Sassy Bead is one of the more unique accessory and hobby stores in Ottawa. It has an overwhelming supply of, well, beads that cater to various personal tastes. However, I think this is mainly a girly store.

My experiences with Sassy Bead generally involve me walking in, getting excited by all the nice jewelry I could create with the all the beads I spot and like, and then realizing I won't be able to make the creation I've imagined because I don't have any experience making jewelry. This can be remedied by taking one of the many jewelry making classes offered at Sassy Bead a few evenings a week. But I can't help but feel a bit turned off by this because it's not immediate gratification (what's shopping without that?) and it means I'm going to have to invest more money in the store than I thought. These aren't big issues, plus there's ready made jewelry...if you can find something you like. Or you could take the shortcut route like I did and buy some wire, plop the beads on, twist some hooks on both ends and give your boyfriend an uncomfortable and easily breakable present.
