In short- this is the place to go to get exactly what YOU want.

I read the reviews, and was pretty confident the experience would be decent, but I was a little worried I might get my hair hacked off by a hipster hairstylist because of the one negative review... I'm not sure what this person asked for, but from my experience with Kat, the only explanation for this catastrophe is miscommunication.

I came in with a picture of what I had in mind on my blackberry, and hopes that I would come out with my hair intact. I had gone to two other salons before trying the Saloon, and came out disappointed both times. I have long, dirty blonde hair, but like it to be a nice bright blonde- I would pay $200 at both previous places, and would either come out with the same hair color as before, or a tolerable shade with half my hair hacked off. This was not the case at the Saloon.

Kat talked me through everything she had in mind, and made sure she understood what I wanted. She was very thoughtful, and made sure I was comfortable throughout the entire service (the last chick passed me off to an apprentice to wash and put toner in my hair- I WAS LEFT IN THE SINK INHALING AMMONIA FOR TEN MINUTES!!!!). Kat did nothing of that sort, taking me back to the chair to ensure that I would be breathing fresh air, and sitting up comfortably.

The reveal was such a relief: yellow-free, nonstripper-esque, perfect blonde hair, with gorgeous layers to boot! (no razor scissors here!) All my length was still there, and Kat styled it perfectly (no poodle-dos).

To top it all off, the conversation was great! No small talk, no awkward forced questions. Kat was so genuine and down to earth, I felt like I was talking to a friend I've known for years.

The decoration in the salon is fun too- very quirky and playful.

I really can't say how happy I am with my cut, I just washed it, and let it dry naturally and my normally poofy, wavy looks healthy and is curling in all the right places... Great job Kat!

The pic on my profile is from the day I got it done, so you can see the beautiful blonde she does!

I was searching online for a good hair stylist with decent prices for my fiancee and came across The Saloon's website. We used to live off of Harbord and I like that neighborhood so I told him to give it a try. I am so glad that I did. He just came home and looks amazing!!! I am beyond happy with it. He hadn't cut his hair in over a year and never knew what style works for him. Kat was his hair stylist and he said she was super nice and they had a good chat about music and the upcoming wedding. Thank you Kat! You made him look even hotter than he did before :) The hair cut was $40 which is reasonable for such a great job!

Glam is my regular salon in Toronto. Not only are Kat and Daina, like, the best people EVER, but they do good hair. There are only a couple of chairs at GLAM so you can be sure that the girls are focusing on you (except for when they have visitors, which they get from time to time!). It's not a bougey, pish posh-type of salon so if you're expecting that then GLAM won't be for you. If, however, you want a great cut/colour in a non-pretentious environment RUN to GLAM.

Kat's never pressured me to either do anything to my hair that I don't want to do or given me the whole lecture about coming in every 4-6 weeks. She recognized that I want to get my hair done (and that, due to my career, I would sometimes get offers for free cuts/colours from other top salons in the city). Still, I'll always come back to Daina and Kat if I want a cut and a gab fest. My roommate also goes to GLAM consistently for blonde-work (from touch-ups to highlights) and is always pleased with her results.

A quick peek at my headshot will tell you that in the hair department, I'm fighting a losing battle.  So where possible, I try to save up a bit and treat myself from time to time and go to a place that is a bit off the beaten path for me.  Also, let's face it, I like to offer those who own the chairs a challenge.  So there's that.

Glam is tucked away on Harbord Street and is comparatively hidden for everything it has to offer.  Not only is hair coiffed, died, shaved and permed, make-up, tattoos, and photography are also available for services.  I'm not an inker myself, but the tattoos that I've seen coming out of the side room at Glam range from the intricate to the beautiful, and not of the "unicorn jumping over rainbow" variety.  A studio is also available for rental at a separate venue at 649 The Queensway and is available 24 hours a day.  Oh, and once you're all glammed up, they also offer a photography service.

They run the gamut and in this quaint-yet-hip environ, what they do they do really really well.  They don't have a lot to play with in terms of my hair, but I'm never walking out of there wearing a hat for two weeks.  Definitely worth a look for a new look.

    Short version:
This is the worst haircut I've ever had as an adult (I once chopped off my own bangs as a child haha)
It was over a year ago and I am still struggling to grow my hair after this fiasco. At the end I ended up with an emo mullet on one side of my head where it was all short in front and then got super long in back and then the other side of my head was left at chin length. It was like two hair cuts on one head - and only half was even close to what I wanted! And it was too short to wear up (so I invested in many creative headbansd and scarfs for a long time).
Kat at Glam was my stylist.

Bottom line: If you don't care what kind of crazy trendster hair you end up with, this is the place for you. (I even like edgy hair, but I want what I want - not what some stylist feels like doing).

    Long version:
A friend recommended Glam Studio to me. She had a great cut, so I assumed I could get one to. I went to Kat. She was really nice and fun, and not actually bad at cutting hair, she just didn't give me what I wanted at all.

When I went in my hair at the time was probably an inch or two longer than chin length. I was so happy it was growing out and I made it very clear to Kat that I had just moved to Toronto and I hear the summers are really humid so I wanted to be able to pull my hair up. It wasn't quite long enough to do it yet, but it was getting there...

Anywho my hair going in was assymetrical - the back a little shorter, but also one front side was a bit longer than the other - I like my hair to have some personality. I essentially asked for a trim just to clean it up a bit, but I really wanted to keep the length cuz I was finally ready to grow it all out. She asked if  I still wanted to keep one side a bit shorter in front and I said that I liked the assymetrical so to keep it that way but without losing length.

She then proceeded to chop the left side of my hair shorter than I'd ever had it since I was a baby - it was well above my ear - only an inch in some spots. She had hacked off a whole chunk of my hair before a word could even get out of my shocked mouth! I re-emphasized that I really wanted to keep what little length I had and she was like oh yeah no prob - no prob?!?! half my hair was gone.

I didn't know what to do I was so shocked so she kept going and luckily didn't cut off too much more but at the end I ended up with an emo mullet on one side of my head where it was all short in front - all cut above my ear and then got super long in back and then the other side of my head was left at chin length - it was like two hair cuts on one head - and only half was even close to what I wanted! She had the gall to say 'look you can totally still pull it up in a ponytail - aka just the mullet part in the back with the short bits sticking out in front on only half my head - WTF?!

I was too afraid to ask her to try and fix it and I was ready to bawl (for me, having half my hair hacked off when I didn't expect it was traumatizing). For some reason I paid (I think I was still in shock) and then promptly ran out of the salon.

It wasn't a horrible cut, it was decently executed, but it wasn't anything that I wanted. To say you're growing your hair out and then to have half of it gone is ridiculous!

I left it for a few days in case I was just over-reacting. My friends kept making  comments on how they thought I wanted to grow my hair and why was it so short on the one side? Not by choice, I said heh.

I then went to Stacy Stray at Grateful Head (a week or two later), who fixed the disaster as best he could. Obviously he couldn't magically make it grow and my hair was way too short for extensions so he just ended up having to cut more off and give me a sort of pixie cut to tone down the mullet. I still wasn't totally happy cuz my hair was short, but he did a great job and I've gone to him since and luckily am finally growing back my hair. It's finally at chin length on the side that was super short - whoo!

I have photos on my other computer and will post to show what I mean.

I've been going to Saloon (formerly GLAM) for over a year and Daina is fantastic. She always gives me a great cut that works well with my curly hair. Usually I hate talking to hairdressers but Daina is so fun and easy-going, I enjoy catching up with her every few months. I usually tell her I want to keep most of the length but freshen things up and she works her magic. I've seen Daina (and Kat) do some edgier (but totally awesome) things with colour and cuts, but my needs for simple, stylish and fairly reasonably priced cuts have always been met and exceeded. Highly recommended!
