Not just for middle-aged dads and war veterans, this vast space on Commercial and 6th Avenue is perhaps the most underrated drinking establishment on the Drive. Going for nothing more than a typical run down hole, it serves cheap pitchers in a clean and unpretentious atmosphere.
The regulars are really nice too, friendly to those who brave the lack of glitzy ambiance and walk in for some heavy drinking sessions. As you can imagine, they like to tell stories about the war, or the way Vancouver used to be before the politicians screwed it up. Although I wouldn't call them unattractive, they still don't really make it an ideal place for people looking to get laid (it would probably be easy for those with low standards though).
No nonsense and remnincent of a lodge, it's a great place to bring your grandparents for a drink, and watch them sing crooner karaoke. It closes at 12am though, and its usually pretty deserted by then anyway.
Cheap beer, shuffleboard and random eccentric locals make for a super fun night on the Drive.
Do you know about Scrabble nights on Tuesdays? (7pm) If it weren't for that, I would have never gone to the Legion on Commercial. It's not necessarily a hip place, but it has character and a good crowd. Overall a friendly group coming from all walks of life. The bartender, Peter, is a great guy who will remember your drink. He's also likely to give you a free drink on your birthday!
The crowd here is pretty mixed. In addition to Scrabble night, they have a darts league. There's also a snooker table and shuffleboard. Lots of seating available, and usually 2 TVs turned to some type of sports.
