When I moved away from Buffalo, NY and it's adorable local Co-op, I never thought I would love a grocery store again. Oh Root Cellar, you make Victoria a much better place to live!
I got an obscene amount of fruit and veg for $40. And it's all been really stellar so far, as I slowly eat my way through it. They also have great prepared products - I am the happy owner of some amazing roasted red pepper hummus and some fabulous salad dressing and some local brie (though those are not quite so inexpensive).
Why would anyone spend 3-4x more money on less fresh, less local produce at Thrifty's or the like when this place exists?! -

I actually haven't found a better produce shop in BC.
The Root Cellar is amazing because not only does it carry fresh, inexpensive produce, it carries a lot of BC grown produce and local food. I find it rare to go in there and have a hard time not filling my basket up with food that hasn't had to be shipped around the world.
They have fair trade and organic bananas, which are often quite hard to come by and a huge selection of bc fruit and veg.
I love the staff, I've never really had to engage much with anyone in a complaint way, but whenever I'm inquiring after some obscure herb or root veg they are always amazing and do what they can to help.
And, what is the real kicker is it's cheap. You can go in there and do a weeks worth of produce shopping for under $20. And it's fresh!
Love it. -

Best place to buy produce in Victoria. Local as much as possible, complemented by a good selection of dairy and dry goods. Great for those that like to can!
Awesome value! Great produce!! -

Cannot believe we loaded up our shopping cart, completely not paying attention to the prices, and everything came out to be less than $45!!! If I went to any other grocery store and bought that much produce, I would be looking at hundreds of dollars. Not only is everything cheap, but they offer local produce which is awesome! I am so excited to find such a wonderful place to shop for healthy food and not feel guilty about the price!!

you can always find the best and freshest fruit and veggies here. They focus mainly on local but if you're like me, and can't live without a few things south of the border (bananas, avacados, lemons, limes) they have those too!
I love the signage as they try to introduce customers to new or exotic stuff (Jackfruit and okra to name a few).
It's great to support local and have everything taste so good! OH! it's chantrelle season! so go and get em! -

If you're the type of person who rarely enters the middle aisles in a regular grocery store then The Root Cellar is your dream come true. I've discovered my own personal grocery shopping mecca. It's funny to think my interest was perked when I found out they had Saltspring Island gelato and I hoped fingers crossed they had the wild rose flavour. Generally at the grocery store if you ask if they have your favourite flavour they either say yes or no, with indifference. At the Root Cellar they were ecstatic about trying the wild rose gelato I spoke of and said they'd look into getting it in. Even if they don't I was floored by the response...okay maybe I get excited about gelato too easily.
The selection of fresh produce is fantastic, set up partially outdoors. What they offer outside is almost the equivalent of what most grocery stores offer in total. When you get inside you discover the whole place is a myriad of delicious fruits and veggies. The prices are fantastically cheap. We stuffed 3 large canvas bags (some of them Yelp bags) with fresh goodness for $56!! Ahh the icing on th.....err the olive oil on the salad.....
They are also a clear conscience shopping alternative. Checking the labels there were very few items that weren't local. I find their website very helpful showcasing weekly specials and informing me of their planet friendly efforts. I have a newfound love affair with the Root Cellar, I just hope they wrangle up some wild rose gelato.Listed in: Eating In!

Fantastic products and super friendly staff. The only downside is that they may be the victims of their own success as I often find it so crowded that it takes a lot longer than it should to shop there. I keep going back for the excellent produce but if it gets much busier I'm not sure I can keep that up.
