Stopped at the Rex in downtown Billings on our way to yellowstone. It was a beautiful Friday night in early May so we sat outside sort of near the big fire pit because my wife wasn't sure if she was too cold or too hot yet. I had the ribs and brisket from the smoker and it was fabulous and i don't even know what a brisket is - i thought it was like pastry, you know a biscuit or something. But it was meat and it was tender and tasty. It was so good i don't even remember what my wife had but i know she liked it and it cost a lot. The beer was some local pale ale and went down easy. Just a fun outside atmosphere. Quick service and the coffee was fresh and strong too, which was a surprise. Plus we had the added entertainment of watching some young dancers across the street doing some interpretative dancing in front of some big building. Weird gesticulations and flowing arms with lots of yearning moves toward the sky. i don't know what the heck they were trying to say but hey, it was entertaining and it went real well with a brisket and beer.

Average at best during the winter.
Almost worth the money in the summer on the patio. Arrive early to sit outside. Very nice atmosphere.
Avoid their BBQ items. Horrible!!
It's very slow and if you have children, I hope they're very patient!!!
All that being said, when I bring a group of 40 here, they totally kick ass. Makes you wonder..... -

YUM! After reading the reviews here, I was not sure if I wanted to go to Rex or not. Some people I was traveling with had gone there a few nights previously and they enjoyed it very much, so I thought I'd give it a try. I am glad I did.
I had the Bacon Wrapped Filet (8 oz filet wrapped in applewood smoked bacon, topped with Point Reyes bleu cheese crumbles and cajun onion crisps with rosemary demi glace). It was EXCELLENT! Those cajun onion crisps were wonderful and I wish I could have had a whole side order of those. The flavor of the steak was wonderful, and it was a tender steak cooked to perfection.
Several people have mentioned the slowness of the service in their reviews, and I definitely found that to be true. I had to wait 30 minutes to order, even though I knew what I wanted and then I had to wait almost an hour after ordering to get my food. When I was done eating, I asked for my bill and it took another 30 minutes to get that, then the server said she couldn't take my credit card right then so I had to wait another 15 minutes for her to come back and get it... 45 minutes from the time I asked for the bill until the time she picked up my credit card and then another 15 minutes while she ran the card. I was at the Rex for over 3 hours just eating by myself, with most of the time waiting on service of one sort or another. It was a beautiful night on the patio, so that helped.
Another thing I've seen mentioned in the reviews is how expensive the Rex is. I agree that this is a very pricey place. I had the steak, an appetizer, and 2 wines and my total was 66 dollars; that's the most I've ever paid for "just me". -

We were steered in the direction of The Rex by the CEO of the company we were working for while in town. He eats there so often that it's rumored he has a drink named after him at the bar.
So with that kind of endorsement, the place has to be really good, right?
Meh. It's not that it was totally awful per se, just completely underwhelming. I was expecting a top-notch steak and I got a chewy, bland, greasy piece of meat.
The sides were just okay. The service was pleasant. The food had a very "supper club" feel to it. Like (and the locals probably won't get this reference) being at Ponderosa Steakhouse with my grandparents as a kid.
There are better places to eat around town. -

When in Billings for work, there is no other place we eat than The Rex. Every time I have eaten here, except once, it has been great. This is a steakhouse (why would you get coastal seafood in the middle of MT?) and I recommend the fillet or rib eye. The only thing I have had that was not good was the chicken sandwich.
They have a tendency to slightly under cook the steaks, I usually like my steaks medium rare, but order them medium at The Rex. The Ceaser salad is one of the best I have ever had, it has anchovies and bacon on it - be warned.
Sit at the bar, talk to Tom, enjoy one of there craft beers on tap, savor the meat, and listen to some stories of Montana. -

The first Yelped joint in Billings was a disappointment.
After a strenuous 3-day hike eating only nuts, berries, and jerky, one would think dinner at a nice restaurant couldn't possibly suck. But this one did. Salad was the worst I've ever had. It was a large hunk of iceberg lettuce, not even chopped, with an insipid dressing. The "wild Oregon salmon" had very little flavor. Side vegetables were a joke. Baked potato was average.
Service was wonderful, but if you are in Billings, I recommend Walker's. (I should note that the rest of my party seemed to think the Rex was quite good. I will also note that they thought dehydrated scrambled eggs and beef stroganoff cooked in a pouch were delicious.) -

I've been here several times recently, so I decided it was time for a review. Overall, I like the place. The onion rings are fantastic; they are cornmeal breaded and fried to perfection. The two burgers which I've had were both done as requested and tasted good. I'm not a huge fan of the slightly-soggy shredded lettuce they use--it seems out of place on what otherwise is a pretty refined burger.
Also, The Rex would be well-served to be a little bit more generous with their side dishes. I like their pasta salad, but I found the portion lacking both times I ordered it with my meal. Service-wise, their waiters and waitresses are friendly and know how to be attentive without hovering. -

Disappointing..we really wanted to sit outside, but the thunderstorms pushed us inside. The food was ok at best. I had the 1/2 rib special. I never even finished one. It was dry and pink (eww). The place was packed, so either it was a bad night for food there, or the people of Billings have low expectations.

Eeek. Steak definitely wasn't as good as ones I've had at other steakhouses around here. It had a funny taste to it.
Maybe I'll give it another try someday. Perhaps. -

No complaints here. We started outside but when it started to drizzle we moved into the tables near the bar. The waitress had no problem adjusting and said it happens all the time. The service was attentive, I had a seared ahi salad that was pretty tasty, my husband had a buffalo burger that he said was worth the $10. It was pretty full for a Thursday early dinner. The inside restaurant is more formal with a more formal menu. Overall a good meal at a reasonable price.

This is a nice enough eatery. They have a well decorated cozy dining room, bar area with seating and a patio area. The food is usually pretty good and the drinks are made well and they have good wine list. Might be a tad pricey for what you get but certainly not out of line. Wait staff is competant and attentive except for the two guys that work the main bar area on the weekends. They can be, and usually are rude, uncaring and not very attentive to getting your order right. Better to go to the back bar and let Justin take good care of you.

Hey, if you're in Montana, don't have Oregon salmon or coastal shrimp. Or brush up on your map-reading skills...
This place has been around for ever. We sent my parents here for their 25th anniversary when it was new. They must be doing something right or they wouldn't still be around!
Great place to eat in the historic downtown area. -

The Rex is the only place we ate in Billings, and it was worth the visit. We started by walking the downtown to see the sights (such as they are) and then found the outdoor patio at the Rex to be the nicest spot for a steak dinner with fresh asparagus and a great bottle of Napa wine. A rainstorm blew in, so our waitress helped us relocate inside, where we continued to enjoy our meal and observe the clientele at the bar. The have an extensive wine list, great local beer on tap, and sear local beef to grilled perfection. This is not a touristy steakhouse, but a living and breathing part of the city. We had an amazing time and were sorry to leave the next morning for a long day of driving.

After further review and multiple additional visits, I have to drop it to 3 stars. Prime rib is great, but other steaks are under seasoned. Service is ok., and appetizers are average.
