Was looking for a brunch/lunch spot and came across this diner on our way to the seawall. Arrived around 12:30 on a Saturday, was comfortably busy but not packed or full. Checkered tablecloths, mismatched homey decor. Large range of menu items starting from very affordable prices. Can order many items a la carte as well. Breakfast starts at $6, but you can order a la carte items (ie. pancakes, french toast) for $3. (Blueberries +$1 - watch out, it's a tiny portion). Eggs Benedict start at $9.
Highly recommend getting hashbrowns - they were deliciously seasoned! -

There was nothing really that special about The Red Umbrella. I stopped in here after a day at the beach because it was close by (English Bay) and not nearly as crowded as all the joints along Beach Ave.
I had a burger with homefries. It wasn't impressive, but it was cheap and good enough. I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for somewhere special to go out to... but on just a casual summer day, it might be nice to stop in, avoid the crowds, and have a decent home-style meal. -

Going for walk around the Seawall on an unusually unrainy Saturday morning, mix two girlfriends with cheap breakfast and we have a winner. The latte was made with love and the breakie was fast in getting in my belly, the fact that it all came with a tab under $10 made it an experience I will be repeating again some time soon. The simple decor and no nonsense staff were perfect for my mood :-)
There wasn't anything overtly special about the place but sometimes simplicity just works - you won't ever find me there for lunch or dinner but for crispy bacon and a couple of over easy eggs you will most certainly see my smiling face there again. -

My GF and I had breakfast here on Sunday, it was a home style breakfast great portions, I took up some of my breathing room to finish it (both of us stuffed). I thought the food was good, but what shocked me was the $19 bill (for both of us!). Wow, definitely a steal of a deal !! Good food, Great Price. Love it!

We were craving a traditional bacon'n'eggs feast, so headed down here on a Saturday morning. It was surprisingly quiet, we were there around 8:45 am - but there were two larger reserved tables. It is a country diner style place, not super clean but clean enough. As others have mentioned the male server that works there is not overly friendly - but that doesn't bother us, he refilled our coffees and delivered the breakfast we ordered.
We both had the deluxe, bacon, eggs, toast and hashbrowns for $7 - coffee was about $2. The breakfast was good - nothing fancy but it tasted good. Coffee was slightly above average for this type of place.
Would go again for the same thing, and would be interested in trying their very reasonably priced advertised pasta specials some time. -

I've only ever eaten at this place for breakfast and lunch... and I can tell you that it is one of my favorite little eateries. the location is prime (great peopole watching) and there is a cute little patio if you want to eat outside.
Breakfast to me is "basically: the same everywhere, but the Red Umbrella manages to make it a bit better than everywhere else.. The home fries are to die for, and they actually use real bacon... (instead of that really thin stuff McDonalds uses) To top it all off, breakfast is around $5.00 !!! So cheap!!
Soups and sandwiches are pretty decent.... The only reason I didn't give 5 stars, is because of the service... The young guy that works there isnt the friendliest of characters, and could probably stand to smile a bit more... -

I just love it. A missing link in the west end. A simple home spun eatery.

The restaurant enjoys some prime real estate with a nice patio, but somewhat seems to be caught in a time warp.
I stopped in for a late breakfast and ordered the usual staple of eggs, bacon and toast. The service is casual and efficient, and the food was well priced and tasted good. The coffee was decent. Not sure there is much to report here, but I do feel its a good place to grab some grub. -

A West End staple since 1997, the Red Umbrella Cafe is a great spot for a quick breakfast or lunch.
Despite it's small size, and dated decor the Red Umbrella is a step up from your normal greasy spoon restaurant. The food is simple, straight forward, and inexpensive, but freshly prepared and good quality without the grease.
We've been there a number of times for breakfast, and have yet to have any complaints with the food. The service can be a little slow at times, and the overall aesthetics of the restaurant needs a make-over but for the price and quality of the food, these trespasses are easily forgiven. -

Went here for some lunch today and from the outside it doesn't look like any place I would actually want to go into. But my friends convinced me because they wanted breakfast and it seemed to be the only place that was still serving breakfast (they serve it all day). So we went in and sat down our waiter didn't have the best manners. he just came over and asked what we wanted, "no how are you?" or "would you like something to drink?" just "what do you want?" but whatever he seemed nice enough.
The food is better than expected and the place itself is actually kind of cute. I didn't try the coffeee but it doesn't look like it would be any good.
