Review from Justin L.
Returned to Red Onion for a Sunday lunch visit to see if there were any alterations since the change in ownership a few months ago. There has been some modest renovation (same layout, but everything looked a little newer or more modern). Otherwise, the food seems to be about the same. Which is great if you liked the food before.
My eating partner and I ordered our favorite CHICKEN BURGER ($7.65) and agreed that it was just as tender and tasty as ever. Sides add up: cheddar, bacon and/or mushrooms cost $1.50 each. FRENCH FRIES ($4.75) were delicious, although $1.95 for two tiny thumb-sized paper cups of dip seemed steep. There was some Red Truck on tap, but I opted for a strawberry MILKSHAKE ($4.75). Nothing special. White Spot's is thicker and double the amount.
If you've got some favorite items from before, chances are you'll find them here again, even if the numbers add up to more. Relaxed, family-friendly spot. Friendly and personable service.Listed in: Good Burger

* Burger fail *
I ordered their signature "Red Onion Burger" which is listed as 1/3lb all natural beef flame grilled, homemade mustard sauce, crisp lettuce, and fresh tomatoes for $8. $2.75 extra for fries.
What I got was this http://www.yelp.ca/biz..., which was a hockey puck over cooked charred patty, dripping in mustard and mayo (I guess that is the magic "homemade mustard sauce"), with some soggy lettuce, a less than ripe tomato, and some onions that tasted of burned hockey puck patty from the grill. Meh.
The fries were better than the burger, but were overly greasy. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
This was concession stand quality at premium burger prices. Boo!
I won't be back.....Listed in: Vancouver Burgers

Been here quite a few times. Work a block away so its great for lunchtime. Every time without fail I order the cajun-chicken burger because it is outstanding. Add-ons (cheese, bacon, etc.) Are very pricey and add up quickly. End up spending quite alot more than the original menu price by the time I'm done but its still delcious!
Service is lovely and atmostphere is very warm and freindly. -
Review from Larry L.
The last time before this It was back in the 80's.
Something must be good if they're still here.
And the burgers are good.
Just make sure that if you order the tuna, do not ad sauerkraut. It made it taste fishy and although I finished it. I wish I hadn't.
Should have gone with a beef burger and some chili. That would have hit the spot.
Fries are extra and they're so so.
Coffee was decent.
Price good.
Better than the hot dog I remembered from when Duran Duran was popular. Or was it really that long ago?
At my age it's all a blur.
maybe it was the 90's...... yeah, that's it. -

I was told that since I was a burger lover I HAD to go to Red Onion...a popular haunt for the Kerrisdale folks..I finally was in the hood one afternoon and thought I'd give it a try..
*sign...I sorta wish I hadn't and just let the hype and idea that it was this magical burger place live on in my mind..but I didn't and now I know the truth..their burgers are awful! They are basically what I would call "rink" burgers..you know they ones you get at small town hockey rinks...skinny and bland frozen patties..the bun was stale and soggy..it was not a good scene at all...one they other hand the corn slaw side that I has was amazing...maybe reason enough to go back and just have the slaw...the milkshake too was a let down..too runny and quite small for the price...
Our waitress was fantastic..funny and charming..very sarcastic...I only wish she worked somewhere that I wanted to eat....mayhaps for her I could give them another try..Listed in: Just Skip It

Never again.... First off our waitress was great, But in this day and age this place is EXTREMELY over priced! Me and my boyfriend each got a Cheeseburger/Shared yam Fries/2 Rootbeers... with HST and Tip it was $38 dollars...Really?! That was insane to us...oh ya and we paid extra for pickles. Burgers were burnt as were Yam fries. Not worth it ..Go to any other Burger Joint for a way tastier Burger!

The first time I went to the Red Onion was in 1998. For the longest time I remembered the delicious burger I had. The second time was yesterday. Same burger. Same delicious.
Get the hamburger, the chicken burger, or the double dog and you'll enjoy. Anything else and you'll probably be bored. Really this place should be a burger stand, not a full restaurant. -

The food itself was alright. Nothing special.
But the milkshakes were absolutely fantastic. I basically stole my friends and slurped up 1/2 of it. -

I went here for dinner late one evening with a group of friends. Had a burger - it was fine, loaded with sauerkraut, cheese and bacon but the patty itself wasn't as good as I expected from the blurb on the menu.
The real disappointment was that they didn't have any of the draft beer on tap that their menu promised. Very nice people, though. -

Been coming here for years - out of habit....
Usually comes here q6months.... then experienced the burger.... then tht it wasn't that special at all... blame short term memory problem
Flame- broiled patties - like BK.... I tht the buns were just average
Milkshakes OK.... not great...
Definitely better > McD and BK... but that's not saying much
Still, I do come back once in a while out of habit.... -

This is a great place to get some classic, open grill grub. I go regularly with my family: the chicken burger is by far my favourite item on the menu (get it with thigh, not breast). Everything else is pretty standard, and the service is very friendly but not extremely competent.
I love how they give you the red onion at the end of your meal, it's a nice folksy touch. -

Went here for dinner a couple of weeks ago. Passed by it many times, but never ventured inside. Place was actually surprisingly full. Definitely a step up above McDonalds across the street. Prices also reflected this. The burgers were pretty good. The fries were also above average. They're actually double fried. The chili is apparently made with angus beef, although it didn't make too much of difference. Milkshakes were good, but about the same as White Spots. Overall it's good, but much more expensive than what you'd expect for burger and fries.

I have been going to the Red Onion for as long as I can remember. Maybe 3 or 4 years old! They have the best hotdogs, hamburgers, milkshakes, veggie sandwich, french fries, and spinach salads. This is my comfort food. The service is always great, and the food consistently delicious. They always have large portions, and never stingy on the cheese etc. You have to try it!

Went here once for a burger and it was not a bad place. The burgers are flame broiled and they make it as soon as you order it. A good alternative to McDonalds and burger king

out of all three stars that I am going to give this place...... one of them goes to the milk shakes they have and the OTHER two go to the exceptional service we had from our waitress. She was funny, charming, witty, and prompt. The food was MEH, but the service wasn't.

I was hoping to love this place, but the burger I had was burned/overcooked and the bun collapsed while I was eating it. For $8 seems like it would be something special, and it wasn't. The free lollypops in the jar by the cashier were a plus, though!

Review from Chani J.
I liked it. I'm used to more robust flavor from the burgers I enjoy, and the fries were fresh but not as crispy as I would want. Everyone is right about the service--really good. Loved our waitress. I agree that the patty wasn't large, but I do think it was fresh, not frozen! I would recommend going there, but be prepared to season your food a bit.
