Review from The Curvy Gourmet H.
Vancouver, BC
I am truly lucky to live in such a killer neighborhood of Vancouver. Right between Main street and Commercial Drive in Mount Pleasant. I am literally stumbling distance from The Biltmore. A hip little bar that hosts live bands and sassy burlesque. A truly divine combination of hippie and hipster Vancouver.
I was recently introduced to another local gem, The Re-Up BBQ. A sleek silver food cart that is parked outside of the Biltmore on Saturday nights. Street food is often under appreciated and misunderstood. The days of plain boring hot dog stands with tasteless options are behind us. Bring on the gourmet and the mouthwatering!
On that note I present to you Re-Up BBQ. They have brought a southern summer classic to the streets of Vancouver.
I enjoyed my first Re-Up Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich at 2:30am on a Saturday night after attending a disco themed birthday party. It was by far the perfect way to finish off a night of gallivanting. The juicy pulled pork is braised and slow roasted for 10 hours before it even hits the cart. Paired with a crisp coleslaw in a fresh Portuguese bun and topped off with their signature (never gonna get the recipe...ever) home made BBQ sauce. The combination of flavors is marvelous and Re-Up has created a simple yet divine street eat. Their Sweet tea tastes like the traditional iced tea left in the sun in the summertime to steep. Perfectly sweet without being overwhelmingly so. Just as beer is the partner in crime to wings...so is the sweet tea to the pulled pork.
Holy Moley...These guys know how to cook. Another offering is their Beef Brisket Sandwich with a brand new espresso based BBQ sauce. The beef is slow roasted with pecan smoke which makes it juicy and pretty blissful. The new BBQ sauce really brings out the best flavor of the beef and is rich without overwhelming the natural awesome that the brisket has to offer.
For those vegetarians and vegans who might be thinking that a BBQ like Re-Up has nothing to offer you. I present their second new creation. A simply marvelous Black bean and corn chili. As a meat free option, it is in no way lacking in flavor. It has a delicious blend of spices and has the perfect hint of heat. They have even created a creamy Cilantro lime sour cream which is drizzled on top of the chili. You can request no sauce be added, leaving this to be a great vegan lunch.
If you were to look at the variety of options available when it comes to street eats here in our city, you would definitely see the ones that stand out. Those that choose fresh over frozen, roasted over deep fried, healthy and flavorful over fatty and boring. Vancouverites pride ourselves on being a green city with healthy lifestyles and lifestyle options. We also love being different and one of a kind. The Re-Up BBQ is such a great example of ingenuity and creativity in this city. Let's hope they are granted another license so that we may see them improve our street cuisine with another of their mouth watering creations. Perhaps their next endeavor will be some amazing dessert offering...Wouldn't that be fantastic! -

WOW! Now THAT is a pulled pork sandwich! It was a drizzly day of my first day off for Christmas vacation and was downtown finishing my xmas shopping so I decided to give it a go from a recommendation.
A very pleasant person greeted me and asked what I wanted and hoped I liked it. Pulled pork goodness plus the wonderful iced tea made this definetely a place to go eat! Must go eat here!!!!! -

It's messy, it's tender, it's moist, it's sweet, it's filling my mouth with all sorts of good.

Seriously, without a doubt, the BEST pulled pork sandwiches ever! It is so mouthwatering and delicious, with the coleslaw in the bun with the meat, and the best part: the meat doesn't get stuck in your teeth! I went to the pulled pork competition award winning vendors section thing they had the PNE last year and Re-up BBQ blew them out of the water! The sandwich I had at the PNE paled in comparison. I took one bite and the whole piece of pork came out of the sandwich-
not like Re-up! A must eat for pulled pork lovers! We blogged about them too: http://www.vancouverea... -

Impromptu urban picnics are becoming easier with the myriad of food trucks this city has to offer and the Re-Up truck ranks pretty high in my books. They only sell one thing, well maybe two if you count the sweet tea, but this food truck by the Vancouver Art Gallery specializes in a fantastic pulled pork sandwich. So hand over your $7, grab a bunch of napkins and enjoy your sandwich near the fountain on the West Georgia side of the gallery or on the Howe Street side steps of the gallery, near the gallery shop. If you're feeling adventurous, you can join a slightly edgier crowd on the steps of the gallery along Robson.

Pork perfection on a bun. Extra napkins are a must.
And ReUp's cheerful dealers will soon be invading my 'hood with a full-on location inside the River Market at New West Quay. What other barbecue goodies we'll be eating when that opens up (early spring anticipated) remains to be drooled over. Chili? Brisket? They might even have a liquor license.
For now, a ReUp cart is on the riverfront boardwalk on many weekends, doling out my fix of pulled pork or brisket sandwiches, and they're also doing a brisk business in barbecue brunches: bacon, biscuits, gravy and eggs!
Deliciousness at both ends of the SkyTrain line. At $7-$9 a sandwich, it isn't the cheapest food cart, but I guess addicts always complain about the price of their drugs. -

The Food: After eating pulled pork from multiple locations, I can no doubt say as a pork lover that this has AWESOME pulled pork.. After waiting in line for 0 seconds on Friday at 2:30pm, I decided to visit them after the #SupportYVRfoodcarts movement started by Mary.
I never had the chance to visit them, and this was the perfect time. Literally. Imagine stepping outside, your breath fires out a warm fog and you wrap yourself like piggy in a blanket (which I still need to try) as winter hits your lungs like Muhammad Ali.
And all you crave is something warm for your belly.
It's almost deceiving. How simple and quick things are handed off to me at ReUp. I look at the bun, the pork and the coleslaw that comes with it. And that's when things get even more deceiving because what looks like a simple sandwich is far from it.
As I take the first bite, which is always the best, the warmth, the sharp sweet tangy flavours that come from the vinegar in the coleslaw and the bbq sauce soon jump out at you the way King Kong would. And eating that sandwich in the cold made things even better. (more reason to go and eat cart food in the winter.)
But I'm not saying the flavours are tart and sharp to the point they make you wince.
The flavour and texture profile for this "simple" sandwich is actually extremely complex. Not only is the pork sweet, and that they don't overload anything with salt, but their are hints of spiciness.
it's the fact that they were able to gather multiple textures together that make it work in such a beautiful way. And this is where the simple turns to delightful.
The bun is like a marshmallow, soft like the way a butterfly would flutter. No joke. And then you have your pulled pork which is soft and tender and MOIST. You can eat it completely on it's own with your fingers and it's little firmer than the bun.
And then you add the crunch of the coleslaw into it, so you have a nice hard crunch that echoes through your ears. It's a wonderful contrast of texture in play. Again it all seems so simple, but yet devlishly delicious.
If you've read this far, the danger is now that you'll have expectations of it being earth shattering. But keep in mind, I'm comparing this sandwich relative to other pork I've had in the past. So This 5 star is for the absolute and the relative experience. And don't raise your expectations.
What you need to do is this. Buy it during the winter, stand aside, close your eyes, and just take the first bite, and try it slowly. Notice the flavours and textures (yes like Ratatouille) and you'll know what I'm talking about, I promise.
The only thing, I wish there was more coleslaw on all my sandwich. But that's really about it.
Service: Service was friendly, quick and efficient. Small banter was going on.
Value: Excellent for the quality.
I don't give out a lot of fives, but I really did like this place, And will be returning during the winter lunches.Listed in: Good Eats Under $10 (before…

Pulled pork. If it 'aint messy, it 'aint right.
Unless I'm just blind, there isn't a heck of lot of decent eats around the downtown core (Robson Square). Being temporarily booted from their spot by the VAG (always a chuckle when I see this abbreviation), I spotted them on Robson and Howe.
We were in a hurry doing last minute gift shopping for a wedding so we grabbed 3 pulled pork sandwiches to go. First good sign: good dose of sauce. When I opened the bag, it was mostly covered in sauce. Dry bbq meat is just plain wrong.
I gorged mine down with few breathing breaks. Was it the best? Not quite, but from a small food cart and only $7, it was pretty damn good.Listed in: Best Cheap Eats, Carts with Food

Near-expiring Good News coupon.
Pouring rain.
Hungry.
Un-street food friendly weather be damned, I cashed in.
$1 for a pulled pork + the chance to tick another cart off my to-eat list? WIN.
Pulled pork sandwich:
Portuguese bun - phenomenally pillowy. yum!
Pork - undersauced, not as fall-apart tender or orgasmic as hyped or hoped.
Southern sweet tea:
I could drink this ALL day - refreshing, well-balanced mix of sweet & tang.
Sandwich didn't wow...
but I'll be back for s'more tea & a taste of the brisket!

I feel like this was one of the first food carts that got up and running. It's great to grab a sandwich and sit out in the sun at the VAG on a lunch break. They are super friendly and offer a decent pulled park sandwich. I also love that they have set up a location outside the Biltmore on Friday and Saturday night. Food carts need to expand more in Mount Pleasant and East Van. Good work!

I never knew food truck food could be OK!
This review is a bit dated, but it holds true today. I went to this place over the summer to have the infamous pulled pork sandwich. It did not disappoint. It was pretty damned good.
I make my own pulled pork at home, so I (of course) wanted to see what the pros do. Yeah I'm gonna try to replicate it. I've got some ideas already..... muhahahah -

I meant to write a review for this place but I haven't gotten around to it yet. So here it goes. I have been into those online coupons like Groupon and Living Social. I bought a $1 a long time ago and days before it was about to expire, I went to their stand and used it. It was so delicious. Their secret mix of spices to marinate their pork still remains a mystery to me and I've given up trying to figure out what's in it. It has a hint of everything! salty, spicy, a sweet tang and no bitterness detected anywhere.
Another reason why I love this place; their homemade iced tea! I can guarantee you that it does not fast like it came from ice tea mix. It had enough sweetness to the drink and you can taste the tea part of the iced tea as well. -

I've usually avoided food carts, but today I learned that taking chances can be rewarding!
Delicious Pulled Pork Sandwich - hot, juicy and tasty. Home made black cherry juice that was really exceptional. And the staff were delightful!
I considered giving them four stars for not having any convenient seating, but it's a street cart! What do I expect? Besides the stairs to the Art Gallery are just steps away.
Five stars for blowing my socks off and proving that you can teach an old dog new tricks! Woof woof! -

Good, but not that good. Re-Up's pulled pork sandwiches are tasty, decent value and satisfying, but not really worthy of the hype.
I wouldn't rate them any higher than those from Memphis Blues BBQ, and they're a long way off the best I've come across (which was at Southbay Dickerson's BBQ in Olympia). -

It took me all but ten minutes from viewing the photos of the pulled pork sandwich here on Yelp, to gazing into the steely windows of piggy heaven that is The Re-Up BBQ. I watched the girl in the truck make the sandwich right before my eyes...first the pork, then the bbq sauce, topped off brilliantly with some slaw and squished into a delicious portugese bun. I was trying hard to keep my own inner piggy on the down low as the excitement and anticipation escalated.
You know when you see a McDonalds burger on tv and it looks so inviting, succulent and delicious? But you know it's a big fat dirty lie? All I can say is that after looking at the photo of the pulled pork sandwich posted by Sean N., that what I saw was what I got. My sandwich looked just like that. It was like in the blink of an eye, the sandwich jumped from the computer screen and on to my tastebuds, where it started a party.
Juicy. Moist. Succulent. Tender. Savoury. Sweet. Perfect hint of spice. These are the words that come to mind when I summarise the experience. I was so impressed with this sandwich that I'm actually considering finishing work early and running over to get one for dinner too. Even though my Mexican boyfriend is cooking me Tinga de Pollo with homemade tortillas. Who says I can't have two in one day? Yes, it was that good.
I also must mention that I found the sandwich filling, without leaving me feeling grossly full and queasy, as I often feel after eating a burger.

I love how Re-Up's pulled pork sandwiches aren't swimming in BBQ sauce. I found that the meat was sufficiently juicy and I enjoyed the balance of smoky and tangy flavours.
One thing to note is that you should consume your sandwich as soon as possible after you buy it as the coleslaw will make the bun soggy if you wait too long.
Bottom line: Re-Up makes a very tasty sandwich! -
Review from Dani C.
I had been meaning to try their beef brisket sandwich after hearing about Re-Up, but alas, never did until a few days ago. I ordered the sandwich and a peach soda after they sold out their sweet tea.
The sandwich: Really loved the brisket, lots of meat and definitely hot. The coleslaw was good as well and the bread was soft.
The peach soda: Not as sweet as I had hoped. I expected there would be less club soda and more peach, but it wasn't bad. I will try that sweet tea next time! -
Review from Garth C.
What would I do for a Re-Up sandwich? I'd do even more than what I did to get that last Klondike bar. Don't ever ask me what I did for that Klondike bar.
After visiting this place I was pretty excited to see on their website a link to the BBQ Recipe:
1 cup of in your dreams
2 tbls of not in your life
sprinkle of it's soooo good
heaping tsp of bah-ha-ha-ha.. um no
My heart is broken, why? Because the pulled pork is the reason why I go downtown every day. Sure there is my full time job which I love, just not as much as pulled pork.
Re-Up has a couple of carts around the art gallery so they are easy to spot, you can either pulled pork or beef brisket and yes they are both delicious.
The one downside, during lunch expect a bit of a wait. Don't ask a meat junkie like me to wait!! -
Review from Steven S.
As many know, I love all Things Porcine even their tasty little noses and feets. But I love a good pulled pig sandwich, and Re-Up does not disappoint, the meat is moist savory and just right. It is like licking Memphis* . They also pour on the slaw, and for you who say what? slaw on my BBQ. Yes it is a crown of crunchy goodness that many BBQ lovers do. They also make tasty cold drinks and good conversation. Who knew that pig from a steel trailer in Vancouver could be so amazing!

The time that I hit up Re-Up was when I was leaving the Biltmore. This is seriously the most brilliant marketing strategy that Vancouver has ever been hit with. It also means that know after every party night all I want is an amazing pulled pork sandwich. Kudos to Re-Up for invading my psyche

Review from Amy T.
The right amount of sauce and the right amount of spice on a huge pile of juicy meat and warm bun = orgasmic goodness.
I expected more of a smokey taste, but I really enjoyed the zestiness of the coleslaw and meat in this sandwich.
That was $7.00 well spent... -

Vegetarians, turn away, because we're talking about meat. Okay, and maybe a little coleslaw.
Pulled pork is the star here, with a heaping helping of coleslaw and BBQ sauce. Washed down with one of their Southern (sweetened, that is) ice teas, the meal is filing enough to keep you going, but not enough to slow you down. Just bring cash, 'cause they don't take plastic.
On cloudy days you can take it with you, but get it "for here", pull up a step at the Art Gallery, and watch the world go by. -
Review from Kevir K.
North Vancouver, BC
I was warned about the wait here, so I was already steeled up with patience. Luckily, the wait wasn't too bad.
There's no signage indicating that order pick up is on the left and order placement is on the right. Thankfully, those already in line directed me so that I didn't look like an idiot placing an order in the wrong line. It looks like something that should be easily remedied, especially since the menu is written right on the front of the cart.
I was briefly tempted with ordering the beef brisket at $8, but I stuck with the $7 pulled pork to experience it for myself. While tasty, I wouldn't use adjectives like "orgasmic" or "passionless" as some other reviewers have.
The pulled pork was seasoned really well, the sandwich had just the right amount of barbecue sauce, the Portuguese bun was phenomenal, but the coleslaw wasn't what I was expecting. The coleslaw was crunchy, tangy and a little heavy on vinegar. I would have preferred one creamier, though equally crunchy, and a bit sweeter (I'm a fan of White Spot's coleslaw and was what I was expecting on this sandwich).
The service, albeit slow, was quite pleasant and friendly.
This wasn't perfection, and there was a little confusion around getting a sandwich, but it was enjoyable and I will go back again, especially to try the beef brisket. -

The best BBQ in the city. I've been eating off this food cart since just after it's inception and it never disappoints.
The pulled pork is tender but not soggy and the sauce has something I've been trying to replicate at home but can't quite manage. I've considered taking an employee hostage for the recipe but the cops would just find me on the art gallery lawn butt naked standing over a smoker covered head to toe in BBQ sauce.
Not a good look for me.
The brisket is a hearty bite and when they have a specialty sandwich (posted on their FB wall) I have to make a special trip for all my coworkers.
I don't work downtown but there is a loading zone on Georgia across from one of Re-Up's locations that is perfect for the wheel man to sit in while I sprint across the street for that lovely meat. -
Review from Derek W.
Menus with more than one item are for chumps. Re-Up does one thing right, and that's a tender-bunned, bbq-sauce smothered, slow-roasted-pork stuffed, crispy-'slaw garnished southern delicacy of a sandwich.
There is something refreshing about only having to make one choice while ordering (large or small?). Staff is Southern friendly, and ingredients taste extremely fresh.
What else is there to say? Go get one. -
Review from David G.
Vancouver, BC
Simply put, a beautiful sandwich. Juicy and flavorful, it's the real deal, just like I've had many times in the south. The only difference is that they are using extremely high-quality pork. Not only is this the best pulled-pork sandwich I've ever had, but it may be the the best pork I've had. The quality is up there with Vij's and the other local fine-dining restaurants. You owe it to yourself to give it a try. It's well priced and filling.
The only downside: the hours! Great for those who work in the area, but they really need to stay open at least one evening a week over the summer so I can get my fix. Also note that it's cash only, which may be irritating for some. -

* Another new street food option *
Vancouver has a few new street food options. The guys behind this one got a prime location right by the Vancouver Art Gallery, across the street from the HSBC building.
The menu is straightforward. They offer a pulled pork sandwich and some drinks.
The pork was the smoked variety, in classic true BBQ style instead of stewed in a pot with lots of sweet sauces. That said, the meat was not as smokey as I would normally crave, and perhaps the rub was not as well applied as it could be. It was tender in parts and a bit dried out in others.
They added some sauce and some slaw when making the sandwich. The sauce did not blend well with the meat - I suppose because they were keeping it separate until serving to avoid the meat from getting too soggy. So you got some mouthfulls with mostly sauce and very little meat, and the dry parts of the meat could have really benefited from more sauce integration. I know it would be a pain for them, but I wish they would have a mixing bowl and give the meat a good sauce massage before sticking it on the bun, instead of squirting sauce on top after it is already on the bun.
The slaw did add a bit of moisture - perhaps even too much as it was a tad too mayoey for my taste.
Overall it was a decent sandwich - but nothing I would rush back for.
I am looking forward to seeing what else they serve up as they get the operational issues under control, because Vancouver really can use any classic smoked BBQ it can get! I wish the guys from Smoking Crust (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) would resurface someplace!Listed in: Which wich is which?, Vancouver Street Food, Vancouver BBQ

Food carts rule!
Gotta love a place with the confidence to serve one dish.
Lunch for under $10 - Pulled Pork Sandwich and Sweet Southern Iced Tea.
Pulled Pork Sandwich: soft bread, creamy coleslaw, generous helping of smoky, mouthwatering pork (the smell permeating through the bag on the walk from the cart to my office was mental! My handbag now smells like a delicious pig)
Sweet Southern Iced Tea: not too sweet, with a floral (elderflower?) undertone.
Nice guy serving in the cart who was still smiling even though it was bucketing down rain and a generally miserable day.
On a brighter note, I'm sure the weather contributed to the lack of queue. No wait for me! Yeeha! -

One of the best pulled pork sandwiches I've ever had. Full of flavor and slaw....just the way I like it!! The sauce was tangy and I liked how the sandwich wasn't "messy". I was able to eat it without everything falling apart.
You must try their Southern Iced Tea. It was sooo refreshing and good!! Definitely a unique flavor!

Pulled pork.
Delicately smoked and densely packed into a fresh Portuguese bun with coleslaw and a touch of BBQ sauce. Balanced, chunky, delicious.
Wash it all down with their homemade Southern Sweet Iced Tea.
Return and repeat.
Just go during off-peak times, i.e. after 1:30 or so to avoid the lineup. -

Just tried this place for the first time today, and I have to say, the Re-Up BBQ is no joke. I'd walked past a couple times and had been captivated by the smell, and I'm sure glad I finally gave it a try. A very generous amount of succulent smoked pulled pork and coleslaw (made right in front of you) and homemade bbq sauce on a nice bun for $7! The Alberni St. Urban Fare offers a pulled pork sandwich as well, but it's not smoked, you don't get nearly as much, and it costs more. You do the math.
Keep it up guys! -

After a bit of time it appears they have their kinks worked out, 1 person handling food and 1 person handing money. Kudos!
And the sandwich is even better than before. It was good before but they improved the consistency of the meat. The bun came apart a bit too easily but for the most part it held together pretty well. -
Review from Gina I.
Finally, after so long, I've tried Re-Up.
I'm glad I did. The meat is smoky and goes nice with the slaw.. My only complaint is that the meat needed a little bit more sauce throughout instead of just on top.
$7.00 seems a bit steep for a pulled pork sandwich, but I understand their costs come into play with that price as well.
The girls working the cart are super friendly as well. -

My favorite food truck in Vancouver! It all started back when they did a http://GoodNews.com promo for like $1, and i figured, shure I will try it out. Since then i am addicted! Although being a sloppy mess, and i would recommend lots of napkins - do not eat on the way to a meeting - it is the tastiest pulled pork sangy around! At a great price too, i will be back as often as i can.

This has to be the Vancouver food cart that I keep going back to. Maybe it's the location close to the Art Gallery and the Canada Line, maybe it's the tasty pulled pork, maybe it's just the hipster vibe. It's all good!
Don't come here expecting for cheese or hickory, this is real bbq. I can't wait till their second cart opens up, although given it's location, I'll have to wait for one of it's guest appearances over on south Main Street.
You can't go wrong with one of these sandwiches. I'll be here often over the summer! -

Although just recently opened, Re-Up BBQ has quickly snatched the title of 'Best Pulled Pork' in Vancouver. Unlike a lot of places offering pulled pork, Re-Up actually smokes their meat in a competition style of BBQ vs slow cooking it in an oven or slow cooker. The few other places offering true smoked meat in the city have seen their quality go down lately, becoming more of a chain than a honest to goodness BBQ spot (Memphis I'm looking at you).
The biggest flaws of Re-Up so far have been that they run out of meat from time to time, their prices do not include HST, and their menu contains only the sandwich for now. They say in the future they plan on offering more than just pulled pork, and will include chicken, short rib, and a weekly special sandwich. I look forward to when they get there because a little variety on the menu would be nice.
Until they work out the kinks I have to give them four stars, but would expect them to rocket up to five with a couple minor tweaks. -
